[Q] Phone Identity - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently purchased a HTC Desire. On the BOX it says A8182 (Telus in Canada)
It came with FROYO which I found bizarre.
However, when I go into settings, about, phone identity I get:
Model Number: HTC Desire A8181!
But the Serial# and IMEI match exactly what the box says.
I am actually getting a 3G connection on Fido/Rogers (850Mhz)
I know this because of download speeds (3M DL / 1.5M UL) and in Settings/About/Network/ I see Mobile Network type as UMTS
Could the Model Number showing A8181 be simply because of the WWE Software Flashed on the phone?
SW: 2.10.405.2
BaseBand: 32.44.00.32U
I'd love to confirm this!
Thanks

Bump
I would really try to figure this out.
Can a desire A8181 work on 3g fido or rogers?
It's supposed to work on 900/2100 !

Which Model A8181 or A8183
I have a similar issue having bought a A8183 Telstra branded phone from Australia, I never checked the phone identity but have upgraded to Android 2.3. When I go into the phone identity it says it is a A8181 however if I take the battery off the model on the back of the phone is A8183.
It is working but I am not sure if it is picking up the 850 frequency or not? I am in New Zealand and am using on Telecom which is 850/2100 which is what the A8183 uses, and voda fone uses 900/2100!
How can I test if the phone is 850 or 900 mhz?

unbranded TP2 "not working" on Telstra

I have a TP2 which I got outright and currently has 3 sim. Today I tried my friends Telstra NextG sim and I can't get any service. Tried manual search and also tried changing Band from Automatic to GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850).
Nothing. Also, manual search finds Optus network but not Telsrta.
This is a bit of a bummer cause I was going to switch to Telstra NextG in few weeks.
Would a ROM upgrade fix this? plz help.
Touch Pro 2 (WM 6.5 HTC Rom)
ROM: 1.86.710.3 (67102)
Radio: 4.49.25.17
btw. My friend has a Telstra branded Touch Diamond2
thats quite interesting! telstra are yet to release their 6.5 update, but perhaps getting a copy from your telstra friend when its released will fix this?
My understanding is thtat the unbranded TP2 is a 900/2100 phone. the settings may allow 850/1900 but it will not work. My understanidn is that the nextG version sold by telstra has a different internal antenna setup
The unbranded TP2 is quadband GSM but does not support Telstra 3G. Does Telstra not operate a 2G network? If not then it will not work on Telstra. You need either a Telstra TP2 or a North American TP2 (such as AT&T or some Canadian ones).
yeah Telstra does have 2G, but the whole reason of me switching is the Next G network.
can anyone with an Telstra branded TP2 post their ROM and Radio, plz.
wondering if changing the radio will fix it. I find it hard to believe that HTC manufactures TP2s, as well as Diamond2 or even Touch HD, just for Telstra.

Desire A8181 on Rogers

I picked up the A8181 in Hong Kong and am having some difficulty getting the handset to get any sort of high speed.
I've read through a few threads saying that not having the 3G/H icons is, simply, an icon issue. However, in my case, I can only get E (EDGE).
*#*#INFO#*#* -> Phone Info shows a Network type = EDGE
I have set the APN for Rogers/internet.com.
Any thoughts? Any successful Rogers users here?
Go to you Mobile Network setting and try to choose WCDMA only Network
I'm on Rogers too (well, fido) and i got the A8183 model because I know Rogers does not support 3G on the 900+2100mhz spectrum. I went through this crap with my Xperia X1i, but luckily Rogers activated 3G on the 1900mhz band to take advantage of visitors during the 2010 Winter Olympics (roaming data rates anyone?)
I may be wrong, but i'd say the future looks bleak for your 8181 on Rogers 3G. The A8183 works though, as it's from Telstra in Australia.
Do let us know if you end up getting it to work though!
Cheers

I'm afraid the A8181 wont work on Rogers/Telus/Bell 3G. Those networks use the 850/1900 MHz bands for 3G whereas the A8181 is 900/2100 (Wind Mobile uses those I believe)
For 3G on Rogers you'll have to get the A8183 Telstra model (as mentioned earlier )

[Q] Telstra Next G network with foreign Desire

Hi,
I have a HTC Desire that I bought in France with Orange. The phone is now unlocked and rooted, with a LeeDroid 1.8 rom.
I'm currently in Australia with a Telstra sim card and it seems I can't use the Next G. I have the HSDPA in few cities like Sydney, but everywhere else it's only Edge.
Does someone know if my phone is able to access the Next G ? And if yes, how to do it ?
Thanks a lot !
Antoine
Looks like you bought a Desire without 850MHz. Out of luck I'm afraid. The "Next G" you are seeing is 2100MHz which your phone supports but in rural areas Telstra uses 850MHz.

Is your Desire a A8181 or a A8183? The 83 denotes Telstra NextG 850mhz support.
If you have an 81, you will get 3G signal on every carrier except Telstra. If you have the 83, you only get 3G (NextG or 3.5G) on Telstra.
Yeah I have an A8181 so it explains why it doesn't works.
Thanks for your help guys !

Well, same problem for me !
I have a 81 and had chosen Telstra for the nextg and the cover...
The 850mhz support is software or hardware ?
Is it possible to do something on my desire to be able to use the NextG network ?
Cheers,
Quentin
No.

Your best bet is to use one of the other carriers in AUS such as Optus, Vodafone or 3.
The 850 Mhz radio is hardware based, and your phone has 900 Mhz radio.
3 doesn't support 900, I think Voda are deploying 850(but don't know how far their UMTS currently extends on 900) so the only long term alternative to a new handset would be Optus.

[Q] Upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.3

I recently upgraded an Australian Telstra issued HTC Desire A8183 (frequency 850/2100) to Gingerbread 2.3 as I am using in New Zealand and wanted ride of the Telstra apps and home screen. It was very straightforward however now if I go into the phone to look up Network identity it says it is model A8181, which would mean it was running frequencies 900/2100.
I spoke to HTC who say I must have changed the frequencies and need to send back to Australia to reflash the phone?
The phone appears to be working but I am concened that once I go outisde urban areas I won't have the 850 bandwidth Telecom uses rurally and won't get any signal if it really has changed.
I had read the frequencies were hardcoded into the CPU and couldn't be changed!
Does anyone know this for a fact?
Is there anyway I can check this?
Does anyone think this could have possibly have happened from a firmware upgrade?
I was recommended this forum as the best place to ask this. Thank you.

[Q] Ace or Inspire?

Hi my plushies
Anyways. I just got a Desire HD! YAY ME!
Being a Desire owner for 2 years and seeing a lot of great development on the HD, i'd give it a go. So far seems good, though i like the AMOLED a bit more imo
So my first boot after getting it from retailer, it boots with T-Mobile logo. That means its from USA right? Is my phone then an Inspire or a Ace? Afaik, the Inspire is the american version?
The weird part is, i got the T-Mobile one because the other one (a danish one WWE), was send for repair and i recieved this instead.
Will this affect anything? And how the *** do i figure out of its an Inspire or Ace?!
**Btw, i did do my search first lol
**Is it on the bootloader? I saw an "Ace" in there, but wasn't sure if everyone DHD had that name
*2. edit* Lol apparently i've used the wrong terms. So, Desire HD or Inspire (Apparently their all Ace (As in vendor Ace, like the Desire -> Vendor Bravo))
Inspire is the 4g version DHD was not.
also check the "full" spec list at the bottom of this page
http://www.differencebetween.com/difference-between-htc-inspire-4g-and-vs-htc-desire-hd/
I've got a german t-mobile branded phone so i'd never be sure where it's from
but yes: DHD is the HSPA version, Inspire 4G is the 4G version (LTE? HSPA+? no clue)
My phone is an American inspire that i bought unlocked online... its actually an ATT phone and not tmobile. If your phone is a Tmobile then its def not american but probably from some other countey instead. Another way to find out is by seeing if you get access to 3g in yoir country. Because att uses frequencies that are different from most other countries around the world, the american Inspire doesnt get access to 3g data in most countries. Apart from that its practicaly the same phone hope this helpzs

There are basically 3 versions of the Desire HD.
First is the European/Asian version. It is model A9191 and has high speed data bands of 900/2100. It can be branded or non branded but they are all the same physically. If it says T-mobile on it then it is a European version branded to T-mobile.
2nd is the Telus Desire HD from Canada. It is model A9192 and has high speed data bands of 850/1900. It has no logo denoting it as a branded phone. It also has a second mic by the camera flash used for noise reduction.
3rd is the Inspire 4G from ATT in the USA. It is also model A9192. Physically it is exactly like the Telus Desire HD except it has ATT branding logos on the phone.
All 3 phones are HSPDA compatible. All 3 have the same size memory. All three have the same LCD. In terms of getting at least 3G, if you live in Europe you want the A9191. The A9192 is mainly for North America/parts of South America and can be used in parts of Australia on the Telstra network.
Hi I currently have a A9191 running CM7.2.
When I purchased this phone (in Australia) I was originally on the Vodafone network & I'm now on Telstra NextG (850) - but for high speed data it can only get the "3" network = 2100.
I wanted to know if it is possible to load on the A9192 baseband to "activate" / change to the high speed data bands of 850/1900? Or if there is any other mod to do this?
Or is the physical hardware of the A9191 only capable of the high speed data bands of 900/2100?
Any help or advise would be much appreciated

I don't know the specs for the dhd, but it is a hardware issue.

Thanks Teichopsia,
Looking at this thread, it looks like he was trying to get 4G (inspire4G) out of a 3G device, which I'd say is even harder than just switching bands.
But it doesn't mention anything about the A9192 vs A9291.
Even Qualcomm's site doesn't list a A9192.
I agree it does look like a potentially hardware thing though - i.e. potentially different radio hardware / antenna / firmware... but I don't specifically see this detailed anywhere. Looking to see something that says it is different physical hardware.
The theory I'd like to validate - both Desire HDs use the same MSM8255 chipset, & perhaps you can make a A9191 to a A9292 with flashing the right firmware.
Going to reply to the thread you sent to see if they had any further luck.
Kind Regards,
David.
