Slower then expected Linpack? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got mine and ran Linpack and my phone is only hitting around high 18 max. I thought these things were pumping out over 30 easy?
Edit: Task kill, battery pull and a couple of minutes quiet time and consistent 32 to 33!
Also 57.4 Neocore, 1592 Quadrant and charges significantly faster then the Vibrant.

I'm running constant at 32?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

Must be your G2 only... I'm constantly gettin' 33-35 in Linpack
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

Yeah I get above 30 consistently.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

I just ran it about 15-20x
Most of them were over 29.5, one returned a 26.something, and I had one that only gave a 22 (the phone popped up a notification as soon as that one finished).

Used Big Killer to kill all of my memory resident apps...

Ok a fresh battery pull nets me consistent 26 - 27. Lets see what happens when I kill processes.
How is heat for you guys?
PS - build quality is excellent. I have an iPhone 4 and a Samsung Vibrant and the G2's screen has nothing to envy. I actually prefer it to the Vibrant for color and pixel density and it is reaaaallly close to the iPhone aside from resolution which in practice is really not a ton different.

For everyone running in the 30s are you using task killers or just bone stock?

Stock here
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

Killing processes and all I am tapped out at 28 now. Most the time 26.
Edit - Weird now I am getting 32 to 33 all of a sudden 10x in a row. That's strange. Oh well I guess it doesn't really matter it is running well soooo...
BUT it does seem like it runs warm compared to the Vibrant.

Bone stock here, no need for any Apps Killer

Need tester of quake3droid (FPS curiosity)

I'm curious to see what FPS quake3droid will run at on the G2. It will decide if I swap my Vibrant or not. PM me for it or get it from the market. Hope to see how the results are.
If you wanna pm it to me I'll check
Ill test as well

I'm getting 50's and 60's FPS sometimes 40's and if i receive a text while playing it goes down for a few secs. You do mean the FPS it says in the top right right?
EDIT:Ok now it's looking like it's between 40-60
40-60? Definitely good... The Nexus One / Evo was averaging 25-30. Droid X solid 60, Vibrant 50-60.
Just wanted to know how powerful the G2 was and felt like that was the best way, thanks for letting me know!

If you need more testers let me know, I'm curious to test as well because my friends vibrant had better fps in most the quadrant 3d tests compared to my G2
I actually purchased it from Market, and the performance is pretty much what you're hearing.
It runs pretty buttery-smooth. I suck at playing it though >_<
My G2 came yesterday so I've been able to test it myself and it does run pretty smooth. Could edit settings and push it to 60FPS maybe. We'll see what I can do in an update.
It runs beautifully on the G2. Nice high FPS around 60 for me, but I am not good at it either.

[Q] Battery Life, Standby Current

Hey all,
I just picked up a G2 and got all excited and dumped Virtuous onto it (I'm very used to Sense).
I soon realized that the battery life of this thing is ridiculously bad. I put CurrentWidget on it (I switched from Android on HD2), and noted that it's draining, on standby, at ~60-80 mA. That's very high; on the Android on HD2, it sometimes is as low as 7-9mA (on average).
I'm not doing anything particularly special, and I've got the same settings on both. It's unlikely it's the reading, as the percentages go down like crazy on the G2 (or get stuck; it often gets stuck at 96% for an hour or two and then goes down very quickly). Quantitatively, it's about 1% per five or ten minutes, while I could get maybe 1% per half hour or 45 minutes on the HD2.
Has anybody done any CurrentWidget tests on their G2? I've searched around, and it seems that not many others are using this test (it's very popular over with the HD2 kids. ). Does anybody have numbers they'd like to share? I'd be very interested in seeing them!
I'll, meanwhile, try the AOSP and stock build again to see how the widget performs on that. I'm very sure this isn't normal, though...
Thanks!
The norm for me is 28-38ma on stand by, you will not be able to get it as low as the HD2. It stays at 100% for about 1 1/2 hours after that it drops and at the 60's slows down again.

I've posted before and was able to get the phone to last 12 hours on 1%. It drained at such a low mA that it said 0 and 1 often. I will try to get it that low if i can again since i changed to RC4.
Will post screenshots and logs of information on apps running then make a guide about what settings need to be where and what files need to be deleted and added.

That's odd, though. I would've expected otherwise, considering that Android on HD2 requires most things to read/write to SD card, which would supposedly be more power-hungry than writing to NAND...
Nope; I've run tests on almost pure stock builds (just Astro + CurrentWidget + SetCPU installed, but I don't even have SetCPU running...). Happens on both Virtuous and Villain (Sense builds). Thanks for your input!

That's amazing. Please do post additional information when you have time! I'd be happy to spend some time in the coming weeks to replicate your behavior.
for some reason my g2s battery got better as time progressed.
fresh out the box=needed 2 charges a day
3 weeks later= 7am-10pm still at 36% with HEAVY use.
Shouldn't Standby eat more than the HD2 based on it being 4g? Also I use the GSM/CDMA Auto which has increased my battery life significantly. *#*#4636#*#* phone info. My time without signal was around 9% and is down to 0 since changing it. I am a pretty heavy user and I usually go about 24-30 hours on a single charge. (I'm using the chitech 1800 mah battery though.)
Edit: I'm OC'd to 1497 with 245/245 screen off profile.

I really want to get that type of battery life! It might have something to do with batterystats.bin being well conditioned. I've tried running to zero and it seems to help a little little bit...

That might be true, although I don't have any 4g around in my area. That said, I think HSPA+ is just another bit onto HSDPA, which is what the HD2 has anyway. I don't think it should consume that much more power... (3x fold!). I've tried switching to GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL), but I was using GSM Auto already. We'll see if it helps too!
Thanks guys for your input and feedback; I hope it'll help others, too.

Droid.incredible gets really hot! !

Hey guys let me tell you about this probably normal but weird thing that happens to my inc, it gets really hot from the back. I have been using the web (couple pages), mms app, 1 phone call, and the xda app. Have also installed advanced task killer froyo and stopped all applications from running on backround. I am using skyraiders 3.5 rom. I have it plugged in to the wall charger. And after I unplug It just dies quckly, its temperature is 109.8°F/43.2°C. Im using stock battery. Can the battery be causing this? Am I going to have to replce for another battery? Does anybody else have this problem? Any feedback is appreciated.

I've had mine to 115°F. There's tons of debates about task killers. That in fact could very well be causing your problems. If you have it set to kill background apps that are meant to run they will start up as soon as the task is killed. This cycle will drain a battery pretty damn quick and cause it to get hot. My opinion, take it off. Its not needed. Just cause its "running" in the background doesnt mean its actively doing anything. look at the battery use and then click on an app thats "running" it will tell you how long it has been actively using power.
Task killers are bad.
Your temp is fine, but watch out if it starts getting around 115+. The LED will flash if you hit 119, that's getting into the danger zone.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Also get app Android System Info (by ElectricSheep). You can go to the task tab, then sort by cpu to see what app is running most. (Android System info, I.e. the app you're using, will be quit high. But that's temporary). Like others said, it's probably the task killer.

yeah i thought so! well the rthing is that i had another inc before the one i had and it wouldnt even get near this hot but im looking on ebay right now to buy another battery, and just test it out to see if the battery makes any difference!
another question, do you think the OEM evo battery will last longer on my inc? i mean since the evo runs more apps and the os is more complex? would it fit my inc?

The evo is just a bigger screen version of the DInc with WiMax.
I meant to say since the evo has a bigger screen, and its 4g , so i think it uses more battery power than the incredible right? So the evo stock battery should holdbmore power than the incredible stock battery

Yes, the evo's battery is a little bigger but I really doubt the battery is your problem. If I were you I'd just do a clean install and see how things go. Don't download a task killer either.

The only task killer I can recommend is watchdog. It doesn't act like other task killers. It doesn't kill anything by default. and warns you if a background task is using over a configurable percentage of cpu time. you can then kill it if you desire. Pretty useful for those rogue apps that some times freeze up, and take the processing power with it.

+1 for Watchdog, wouldn't call it a task killer tho as its more a cpu monitor but it can kill tasks also (because of its high usage)
+2 for watchdog. Use the paid version and love it!

I'm done 84 to 68 from Wifi/Music in 25 minutes

My battery went from 84% to 68% from texting, wifi, and music... (I wasn't even browsing the web....)
My solution... I bought a used ZUNE 30gb (the orig) for $60... I can't afford an iPod right now... money is tight....
I hate this battery... or phone for doing this to me...

Batteries are insanely cheap on eBay. $20 will get you an external charger and two or three batteries. Worth it. Changes how you use your phone entirely.
And the battery on this phone is still leaps and bounds better than anything before it.
Wifi isn't a juice hog...3G is...wifi will save you battery by keeping you off of 3G. Playing music barely sucks any juice at all unless you are powering huge headphones at max volume, and even that that's not that much juice....and texting uses 2G that is going back-n-forth anyway.
...something else is up.
Took my phone off the charger at 96% and watched a 30min video and after I was down at 85%. I was using 4g too.

Let's not forget that a weak 3G signal will murder a battery....weak 2G as well, though nowhere near as rapidly. Also some apps and widgets are notorious for sucking the battery dry...and there is also leaving background syncing on. For most people this is almost a non-issue, but, for some it is detrimental. Task killers are also bad news.
Did u check for wakelocks with other apps that shouldnt have been running some apps will suck the juice down fast ive found a few games with some dumbass updater crap that ran 24/7 and killed my battery and those damn airpush ads may only send u 1 ad a day but the updater runs constantly looking for an ad to push which is annoying in itself let alone the battery drain

That's a side-effect and/or another manifestation of the notorious Samsung battery bug. Ever notice how sometimes you reboot your phone and go from 70-90% down to 15-25% instantly? Well, I've noticed that it will also creep it's way back up, even under use....this sounds like that, though, admittedly I've never seen it happen at such a high battery level.

Android, as of Froyo, revamped it's auto-kill/freeze system to be even more effective. It really does work fine. Just because something was loaded doesn't mean it's consuming memory and/or processor cycles. Seeing that it appears to be 'running' might piss you off, but, just let it go. If you start killing these tasks they will inevitably pop up again...that DOES take processor cycles and memory....so now you've got a task killer actively running, consuming memory and processor cycles to kill programs that weren't really consuming any resources that will probably start back up to see if they have to do anything and that also consumes resources.
that's the dumbed-down version so far as I understand it.
So, on recent versions of Android task killers can not only be unnecessary but also counter productive.

Update kills battery life and adds lots of heat

Kitkat update killed battery life and makes the tablet extremely hot near the camera on the back. What gives?
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium HD app
I don't have a solution but the same problem. I'm fine with it getting warm but it's getting really hot! It's great that we have kitkat but it's not all that stable yet.
Restarting seems to help temporarily. Feels like something gets stuck and then makes the CPU run extra stuff but I don't see anything with my wakelock analyzing apps...
When it is in "battery-eating-mode" even browsing or watching a video makes it run hot!
Generally it indicates that a file or service has become stuck, or hung. For me it's common for the Samsung.index.service to get stuck indexing a file and sometimes lasts 3 days before it's resolved.
You should use some kind of monitor to see whats causing it.
Gsam battery monitor does a good job of showing rogue apps, and battery and heat.
Also a CPU monitor is included in the debug/developer which can also show the culprit.
Sent from my P-600
I quite upset about this now. I reset my device and still have the same problem. My tablet used to be excellent and had great battery life. Now Kitkat Haase it basically useless because the battery drains so fast.
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium HD app
Indexservice uses 30 percent of my battery. I read that happens if you have lots of pdfs on an external SD card, but for me that is the whole point of this device. If I just wanted to play games, watch videos and surf the Web I would've gotten an ipad. Really dissapointed with Samsung here. Did they not test the device before they released the update? Or do they clock out of their jobs and go home and use ipads?
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium HD app
Yeah the indexservice did the exact same to mine, Samsung were no help. Happened even when I put PDF's on internal storage.
I had no other choice but to root it and freeze the service with titanium backup, I really didn't want to, but I was left with no other choice.
As I had gone that far I also froze a bunch of other Samsung apps/services - I am so glad I did, the tab absolutely flys along now - feels like a different machine.
Root it, you won't be disappointed
Sony released a statement suggesting disabling the Google backup functions to improve battery life with kitkat Roms. If you don't need those maybe you wanna try that as well.
Settings/general/accounts and save&backup
It will likely fix itself after a few days. It happens on mine every few months for a day or two. Then it settles down and works normally. Same on all Samsung devices.
Has nothing to do with KitKat.
Sent from my SM-P600
I did some testing with an app to check cpu frequency and here's what I found:
Sometimes the tablet goes into "fury mode". Which means that as soon as there is any task for the cpu however small it may be it drives all cores to max 1.9ghz and full speed. Which means even while I'm browsing or watching a video the tablet runs about as hot as when playing an intense 3D game. And with equally bad battery life.
Really bad performance/efficiency handling. Like now I've been browsing(chrome) for 30 min and it ate 15% battery life and it's extremely hot on the back where the cpu is. There aren't any special processes running I've checked with watchtower. Cpu load is not that high but frequency has been constant 1.9ghz max speed on all cores... need custom Kernel PLZ.
I have to say though this is not always the case. Sometimes after a restart or when it was laying around for a while this fury mode doesn't happen.
just rooted and froze indexiservice using titanium backup...hopefully this will help
Ok looks like everything is good now.
