Skype now available - Desire General

Official version of skype is now available for download on the market, can be used over wifi & 3g.

Tried this
Still think it needs a bit of work.
I got some sync issues and a couple of force closes.
ate about 6mb of system Ram even using a2sd.
works ok when it works though, only option for skype so far since the fring / skype issue

Just installed this, works properly on stock rom. Big disappointment is the amount of space it takes, 14MB and no way to move it unless you go A2SD.
The app looks polished and has decent sound quality. Another disappointment is that it want to be always on, no way to exit it. Except for signing out, requiring me to enter my password each time.
Audio delay seems to be substantial as well, with calls over the local WIFI network getting noticeably delayed. Cannot comment on CPU and battery usage.
Let's hope skype does the necessary fine tuning and turns their luck around, since I'm sorely tempted to uninstall it already. (Don't really miss it much come to think of it.)

Skype sucks. Does not let me sign in. It feel likes it doesn't even try. Or it will FC. Size is also big disappointment. Why they didn't implement it with a2sd I don't know. Lot of people doesn't support a2sd within their apps.
This size issue with desire is a disappointment too.
Soon I have to root just to get apps installed. I don't think I should have to root just to get apps...
Anyways in this case it doesn't matter because Skype doesn't work anyway.

Works Great for Me, Sense Rom NON Stock. Takes a few tries to login, but all good.
Just mkae it autokill if you dont want it to run in background.

Try using Nimbuzz, is an excellent piece of work, I find it better than fring and supports Skype
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

I have tried Nimbuzz. It's ok, but skype does not work most of the time. Another thing that annoyed me with Nimbuzz is that the proximity sensor did not work...
I have the new Skype and I find it GREAT, apart from the issues mentioned everywhere (no exit button, large memory consumption...)

For people who are struggling to log in (login seems to fail immediately without enough time to send the auth to Skype):
I had the same problem. It turned out that after installation the app wanted to grab even more memory for data. The ROM seems to stop it claiming any more if it's going to drop below 10% free. Once I had freed more memory, it worked just fine. But I uninstalled it. The total size was about 14.8mb, almost 10% of the free space on a stock Desire ROM. Stupid.

Hi all,
can somebody provide the apk file?
thanks,

Pls specify which of the Skype, is it the one for Android or Skype beta I found in Android market or just skype.

seriously low memory issues after upgrading to WM6

while on WM5 my free memory never really went below 10 M , even with several programs running.
loaded the new generic WM6 to my generic s620 and while it's nice looking, i'm having serious RAM problems. after a clean boot, free memory is around 18 M.
BUT, having a couple apps open like calendar, messaging, msn, it suddenly drops to only 2 MB available! right now, as I'm typing this it has 1,100K free ram and i have skype and IE open, everything else is closed. yes, ie cache is clean.
i did install voice command and at first suspected it for this sh*t but after disabling (removed from startup).
any ideas?
thx
Greg
Try uninstalling Skype and VoiceCommand for a few days, see how it runs then.
IE will also eat ram and not give it back until it is killed. I always remember to use celetask to close it after i'm done using it.

Talking about kill process, what's the best task manager available for smartphone?
I don't know celetask but I'll give this a try.
The question is - does your device run slowly or not allow you to run applications? Or are you just worried about a small number?
I see the same thing on mine, but it nevers runs slow and I have never hit a 'no memory' problem.
I have calendar, inbox, tasks, contacts, phone history, IE, Communicator, MSN and File Explorer open.
I agree with the above post, IE is a hog and you need to kill it from time to time.
My s620 has been running the HTC official WM6 ROM since the day it was posted and I have rebooted once since then, and that was only because I shut it down for a long flight
Maybe I'm just not a 'power user'?
It's not slow but it kicks out some apps from time to time as there is not enough memory.
For example, when browsing with IE, Skype closes sometimes. That pisses me off.

That's normal behavior when system closes some apps for wiping memory, you should try to avoid big memory "eaters" and close some of them..
For me i always try to keep 3-4 apps opened and got no problems..

yep, I know this. My problem is that WM5 vs. WM6 --> 10 MB is missing "somewhere"....
I only have Messages and Skype running, everything else is closed. But when I launch IE and it kills Skype I get pissed!
I upgraded mine to wm6 and i have no idea whats wrong, it runs beyond slow! nothin running, and lag like no other! it gets so bad sometimes that i have to restart my phone, and to restart my phone i have to pull my micro sd because i guess it doesnt like 1gig sticks! how and what do i do to fix this! also i would re rom it but i just to want to have to go through the hassle of getting BBConnect working again!
Hmmm... doesn't make sense, as mine actually runs >a lot< faster. Is yours under warranty? Sounds like yours is defective, you should talk to your carrier about a replacement device

I am not using Skype, but gonna think Skype is very "hungry" for memory, for ex for me: when no apps started i have 15mb free, after IE and other 3-4 apps it's 5-6mb free and still no problems..

MS Official Facebook App

Hopefully the start of MS pulling its finger out

thanks nice find
Finger scrolling is still a bit messed up though... and it's slow to update
I still find the mobile site (m.facebook.com) to be far more useful!
Just noticed something that could be a problem for some users:
While the application is running, even minimised, it uses the internet to update itself. I just noticed this as I was using the application over a wireless connection earlier this morning, then minimised it and put my phone on stand-by. I've just turned it back on to find that it had connected through my data connection (GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA etc) while my phone was off.
So just a warning - it helps itself to an internet connection while it is running

I have notice the same "behavior"
i cant seem to get it to log in!!
I'm using Dutty's XT V3.0 and under the Phone>Option>Data, there is an option to disable data connection when device enters sleep mode.
Not sure if other ROMs are having the same option..

Im getting the same issue. Uninstalled the Ather cab and installed 1.0.0.7 then restarted when prompted. The app loads without issue however I also cannot login.
Device seems to crash and then is incredibly sluggish from there (even after killing the app)
Anyone else seen this on the touch HD and know if there is a fix?
I've been trying this for a few days....and to be honest...I can't see the point of it. I left it running in the hope that it would update itself and alert me of new messages etc..but it doesn't. Even if I exit and restart the app, I still have to tell it to refresh by clicking the refresh button.
using the facebook site via IE or opera is still much better and quicker.
i have thought the same - m.facebook.com is easy and works.
One of the key things it misses as well is the lack of profile photo changes
If they can get this sorted, auto updates etc then it may be worth using but for the moment its gone.
Seems a bit pointless. The only plus side that I can see is being able to upload photos and videos.
There are problems reading comments left on your status... or at least I cant see an obvious way to read them.
The webpage is just so much cleaner.
For thos who can't login...
I have updated my Stock ROM 1.14 to stock 1.56 and now Facebook Official works (previous versions worked on previous ROM).
I haven't noticed major bugs - only scrolling as was mentioned here is ery slow and refresh times....

Sopis - Im running 1.56.405.1 WWE and this still gives me the same login error message....
I too had Facebook-Ather (0.16) installed, i uninstalled it and installed the microsoft facebook cab 1.0.0.7... i get stuck at the login, after typing in my username/email and password, as soon as i press 'Login', the app pretty much stops responding. Then as someone said above, if i close the app the device is very laggy and responsiveness is almost non existant (and even if I manage to get myself to launch cleanRAM, the device is still poor.)
I suppose we need to wait for Service Pack 1 then? lol.

Thanks I do switch back and forth sometimes but I prefer the regular one... the iPhone one just seems less "practical" in the sense that all these status updates and things are like pop-ups... The thing with me is, once I'm used to something, I'm a difficult one to change

HTC Desire v HTC HD2

Hi
I'm expecting delivery of T-Mobile HTC Desire soon.
I have chosen this phone over HTC HD2 on a 7 day trial basis.
I know of the issue concerning bluetooth voice dialing on android phones and I am prepared to accept that there might or might not be a solution eventually.
I am a user of Thunderbird and use a program called Birdiesync for use with Windows Mobile phones. It just works 100%.
It seems to sync Thunderbird calendar and email will be fine on Desire, but I'm not so sure about thunderbird and contacts. For me most of my 500 contacts have postal addresses which are important to me, whereas only a small % have email addresses. It seems Thunderbird and Google contacts are handled differently and the few Thunderbird addons that exist for this issue are not 100%. Certainly when it comes to maintaining the structure of postal addresses.
Lastly I use a piece of software called SKScheMa 1.2.17 on Windows Mobile. This allows me to create a script that turns on bluetooth when phone is on charge and turns it off when phone taken off charge. I like this because when I get out of my car and go to a customers front door I don't want the phone still connected to the car bluetooth system. this software handles this for me. QUESTION: Does juicedefender handle this or can anyone else suggest another app.
It seems I am expected to give up quite a lot of functionability to move over to the Android platform, but I do believe it is/will be the OS of choice in the future.
Feedback and help would be most gratefuly received.
You almost always lose functionality when you move from Winmo, but you gain a nice interface and more fun apps. Eventually android will cover the short fall, it just depends how long you can wait.
The issue with the Desire v HD2 is not just software though. As nice as the AMOLED on the Desire is, the size of the HD2 is compelling. There really is no contest for picture and movie viewing. Some like the saturation level on AMOLED screens, but its much less natural than the LCD on the HD2, its just over saturated. Its not such a big deal on a phone i guess, but some pictures and videos do look quite wrong. I put both through a calibration using the gear i had for my Plasma and i can tell you the blacks on the AMOLED are great, but the colours are WAY WAY off. The HD2 is much better despite only being 65k colours.
Yeah
I'm not too sure if Android is for me to be honest.
I am fed up with poor battery life on every single Winmo phone I have ever owned. I use about 1500mins of tak per month. I really do need MS Voice Command, couldn't care less about playing mp3's watching vids etc. I like to be able to surf net and send and recieve emails. Because of my usage i will always be offered top spec phone for free. I just fancied a change, but even prior to delivery I may have to accept the fact that this latest phone is gonna have to be yet another HTC winmo phone that comes with an old platform, poor battery life etc. I may just need to wait another 18 months of contract before moving over to Android. I'm not too sure what winmo 7 will bring or lack or even if it will be available from here for the HD2
Although I am yet to get the Desire in my hands, it seems everything about the OS is a workaround to get the most basic of features working in a fashion that I am used to. The ability to sync contacts/email and calendar should just work. I just don't get it! Perhaps thunderbird is the problem, but I am not prepared to use Outlook. I use portable thunderbird on my main drive, and this allows you to copy the whole thin over onto a USB stick and use anywhere if required. hats just not possible with Outlook.
The HD2 is a great phone if you want compatibility with Office apps and the like. The screen is awesome and (if you use a custom ROM) bettery life is more than acceptable (2 days with moderate use).
BUT the Desire is a better all round phone out the box. I had to cook my own ROM to get my HD2 how I wanted it. I've not touched a thing on the Desire since I got it.
Perhaps you can help me then.
I really would love to be able to have bluetooth on when unit is on charge and off when not. Does anyone know of an app that does it. Does Juicedefender?
Whilst I may not have to meddle with the Desire it just might be beacuse nothing I want it to do for me is actually available.
1. No bluetooth handsfree voice dialing
2. No apparant flawless syncing between Thunderbird and Android platform
3. No bluetooth on when on charge and off when disconnected.
Whilst I fully understand my requirements may not be on the forefront of many mainstream users, they are hardly so obscure to be not available.
I just don't get it. I know the Android platform is the future, but perhaps for me I need to wait.
I'll give it the 7 days and see if the experience is so great that I'm prepared to give up the proper functionability I have come to expect from a phone.
I had the same dilema... HD2 or Desire..
I've got the Desire but it's going back to orange today... Don't get me wrong it's a good phone but the main things I use my phone for just don't work as well as in my winmo diamond... so, i'm getting the HD2 - I stream a lot of video/mp3s with myplayer, skyfire (tvactchup) and also use fpsece a lot on my diamond but the experience i've had with video streaming on the desire is'nt great.. I know they'll get it right when Full Flash is released later in the year (10.1? is it?) but I'm a bit impatient and I can't wait till then.
I've also tried Xdandroid on my diamond and although it's not perfect I should be able to run Android on my winmo device anyway - so that's made my mind up.
I've had my HD2 for about 6 weeks now, and I'm fed up with it. I have loads of issues with it, but the big ones are:
- Constantly crashes (dialer app mainly - I've tried various ROMS with no luck)
- On screen keyboard is useless
- Internet links impossible to hit cleanly every time, even when zoomed in.
- Smooth scrolling of menus/web pages is impossible
- Lack of a proper "App Store"
- No upgrade path to Win Phone 7
- Confused, counter intuitive UI layout (Window's fault)
- Phone is so large its difficult to hold/operate with one hand.
My wife took delivery of her Desire yesterday, and I'm jealous, although it has reminded me that the HD2 has a lovely *big* screen in comparison.
Desire first impressions:
- On screen keyboard is a delight to use
- Internet links are easy to click
- Nice smooth menu action
- Well thought out, intuitive UI
- Sits nicely in the palm, easy to use one handed
In terms of battery life no smart phone is especially good. I dont think you really lose or gain anything by switching to another OS if the hardware spec is basically the same.
Get both! haha

I'm pretty sure that Locale does this on the market, and I believe there are plenty of others too but I can't remember off the top of my head.
I would never go back to WinMo even if someone gave me the latest handset.

Okay I have also been told that Tasker does it too.
Now I need to be convinced about syncing with Thunderbird properly. Calendar seems fine, and email is easy for me. It's just how contacts are handled. I use postal addresses a lot and I pride myself on the fact that I have over 600 records all properly set out below.
Address
City
State
Postal Code
Home Tel
Mobile Tel
Work Tel
Very few of them have an email address.
Android/Google seems to require an email address so all of my contacts now seem to require a bogus email. That's ok, but Google also seem to want to handle the address more a a note than anything else, and it does not seem to look nice on my PC. How it looks on my phone will be the make or breaking point for me.
I personally like the desire over the HD2, the one thing that annyoed me about the HD2 was the screen problems and having to keep on sending it back to HTC until you finally got one that worked.
Apart from that the wm6.5 and the phone itself was spot on, the HTC Desire on the other hand has not been rooted yet but is damn fast, if not faster than the bulky WM. The only down side to the desire for me are the keys at the bottom of the device.

A large number of my contacts just have phone numbers and no email addresses. I tried creating a new contact with just a name and it work. Am I miss-understanding what you are trying to do?
Also setting profiles lite/pro probably handles the disabling and enabling of bluetooth.

I'm not too sure if this is a Thunderbird issue. I use thunderbird over Outlook because you can instaal Portable Thunderbird onto your hard drive rather than a USB drive. Portable thunderbird by it's very nature does not install anything into your registery. Therefore it is possible to copy it in it in full at any given time on to a USB stick and then you are walking around with all of your details to be used plugged into any PC. I suppose if I were to really sit down and think about this option it may well be redundant if I am prepared to use Google. However my way of thinking at the moment is to use google as nothing more than a server between my Android phone and my email client.
All I know is that the Thunderbird addons do not seem to be flawless.
I need to get the phone and experiment.
I really would like it to work.
No Voice Command or anything that offere bluetooth handsfree voice dialling was all I thought I was giving up by moving to Android. However that may not be the case.

TANGO videocall app is out and working perfectly on Galaxy S !

Yesterday I have tried this FREE app and videocall from Galaxy S to Desire was perfect, I could not believe how high quality video and voice are ! Fring and Qik are no longer needed since their quality is at least 5-10x worse than this so I have uninstalled them right away. Sometimes you must tap that icon for changing camera to get the video but other than that it works great, I am really surprised how simple and nice it looks and how it does not require registration, for 5 sec you are able to make a videocall for free if you are on WiFi.
http://www.tango.me/
So the front camera already works?
Yes, I didnt have this app before yesterday but now it works perfectly on Galaxys front camera ! Really new experience with this phone, I cannot believe how much better it is than my old Xperia X10.
Is it possible that there is no interrest for this great app on this forum ? The only videocall app that works how it should and no one is reporting how it works and on what phones does it work. Thats strange...
The fact that you can only video chat with other Tango users is holding it back. And the fact that it's only on iPhone and Android further limits how many people can use it.
For those that can use it and can get people they want to video chat with to use it, I'm sure it's great...
Might be useful to me if it either had a PC client or could video chat with Skype users. But the a**holes at Skype would probably block it then.
Well in comparision to FaceTime which works only iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 and only on WiFi this is reinvention of the wheel Also, Android + OSx covers A LOT of todays phones. Only thing that I also would like to see is PC client and if Tango makes that there is no need to use Skype or MSN anymore since chats are mostly on Facebook and videocall will be on Tango since the quality of the video is simply sick.
Skype are bunch of idiots, they have had videocall on Fring and I have tried it and it was POOR and DISASTER ! Video quality was like 2/10 with like 10 fps video and the voice lagged 2-3 seconds. Totaly unusable, I have tried it once and unistalled Fring, thats how bad it was. But Tango left me breathless when I tried it, really something new and I could not imagine that my WLAN with 30 kB/s upload speed could stream video with such quality and almost no lag.
Actually, for now, the only videochat for Android is Tango and there is nothing close to this app when it comes to free videocalling.
Yes, just tested. Working like a charm.

Maybe where you live, but Android and iPhone only make up a small percentage of phones among people I know.
Hopefully this app can get a Symbian, Windows, Linux and Mac version so it can replace Skype completely.
I'm still waiting for something that lets me video chat with skype users on PC.
I really dont need Skype or MSN as soon as this app gets PC app. Android will be future, Symbian is dead, N8 is nothing special, Nokia is the past, WinMo could also be soon forgotten, that Win7 Mobile looks really lame and stupid to me so I think that Android community will have the biggest grow in next years.
Thanks for all the compliments - we've been working hard on this application for the past year.
Last Friday we pushed out an update that fixed the front camera on the i9000 and helped reduce battery consumption more than 50%.
Eventually, we want to make Tango work on any device that has a monitor and a camera, but we're focusing on making it the best mobile-to-mobile video calling application first.
Thanks for trying out Tango - let me know if you have any suggestions.

I did have this application installed, but the battery drain was so bad I had to uninstall it. 50% reduce consumption is still unacceptable when it can be 0%, why don't you give the option to exit the app and stop the service draining the battery?
Leaving gtalk on hardly sees any usage of battery, surely you should be able to achieve the same result
Now that we are at phone to phone issue, can you make it work with the bluetooth properly?
I can hear fine but when bluetooth is connected both bt and phone microphone don't work so the other side can't hear me.
Also some notification or presence light would be very useful so we know which contact is online. Right now we're calling blind as my wife uses iphone that does not run in the background and even with the backgrounder it sometimes goes offline. Sucks that only she can initiate call or I have to call her first to turn on tango.
from what i hear the tango engineers are already working on the bluetooth issue (said it somewhere on their facebook)
since i dont need bt i can only say that this apl is awesome.. i mean have you guys seen the video quality on this thing?

[Q] [?] Total noob needs help

Hi,
I am what you might call a total Apple zombie, in fact I never had any other SmartPhone but an iPhone since '07. Due to the huge disappointment with the 4S, I was finally fed up and switched to the Galaxy Nexus. However, while this seems to be a cool developer phone, I have huge issues with using it in a productive environment. But that is probably just due to my own ignorance ...
[Backup&Restore]
Poor me is hit with an update notification like 50 times a day. I suspect that I will lose all data when I hit install so I am quite hesitant here. With my iPhone I did not even had to bother with stuff like that, it synced with iTunes over WIFi whenever I was in one my home networks. The Nexus does not seem to offer such functionality.
What I expect to be backup'ed is all:
of my mail (around 4GByte) that I frequently need to have available offline
my Navigation system and maps (Sygic + Navigon atm)
my music would be nice due to reasons I elaborate on later
SMS, phone records, etc ...
I tried the following means for backups already:
ADB: with command line "adb backup -apk -shared -all -f ./backup_all.ab" --> result was only 700MByte so I won't trust it a bit (my data is around 13GByte)
Titanium Backup: told me all worked fine but my phone has not enough free space for saving the backup to the pseudo-SD, the file is corrupted, and dropbox is rejecting the maps and my email account data (looks like they are bigger than 400MByte or something ...)
Google Sync: is missing all that des not have a google stamp on it
[EDIT] Noting is worse but to switch on Navigation and get the message that the map was not downloaded and to reload 400-800MByte of maps over a roaming 3G connection at the airport or use a super slow paid airport WiFi. Same goes for my e-Mail, I need it searchable and accessible.
What are the pro's suggesting here? I only have around 3GBytes of disk space available on my phone, the cloud services does not like big files, and the ADB backup seems to lack some stuff (though I cannot really tell what it is leaving out).
[Navigation]
I am abroad very often and do not like to pay insane roaming fees for online navigation systems. That is why I acquired two products, Navigon and Sygic since Navigon Europe is crashing right away.
I am used to the iPhone 4, which means: load App, set destination, boom, go ... My Nexus however, needs a warm-up of around 15 minutes and then constantly loses its signal. Furthermore the screen is not always auto-rotating so that I go in the wrong direction from time to time. Am I just too stupid to operate such things?
[Music Sync]
As I said, I am used to iTunes and all is synced automatically. With the nexus I tried Google music but it is not originally available in my country and it cannot find any management software apart from sync. The Music webpage does not let me logon since a couple of weeks now but the Music Manager works on Windows and uploads some of my files. However, how do I add or delete new songs? Am I stuck to add the to iTunes, import them by Music Manager, and wait for an upload?
I also tried Winamp sync but it crashes whenever I want to sync by WiFi and my Mac is not seeing the device sometimes.
[Car Mode]
Both of my cars support the iPhone by cable and BT. I usually use the cable mode because the phone needs to be charged anyway. My cars are playing the music right away and I can use the steering wheel controls to skip tracks, etc. With my Nexus all I see is "cannot play". When I use Aux-In, which sucks btw., I have no knowledge of any way to make the buttons bigger etc. I needs some filigrane fingers to operate that thing when on the go. The Google car App does not want to install itself because it seems to be incompatible with the nexus ...
How can a fit-finger syndrome person like me control their phone in a car?
[Network Access]
Whenever I am in highly shielded environments (that happens often), such as a underground parking garage, a hospital white room (MRT, CT, etc.) or in a research center with much electromagnetic interference, my Nexus is losing its GSM network access and this is okay. However, it does not gets it back when I am out again when I am not switch the phone off and on again! I have already had overflowing mailboxes so often that I have a habit now to restart my phone whenever I am outside again. That is ridiculous! Is that a hardware problem of the phone or do I just have a bad model?
I hope you could enlighten me, as I am totally ignorant concerning Android and their phones. They are indeed a world on their own! Please keep in mind that I am not very knowledgeable so I would appreciate human-understandable information
Included too much information. What update? I'm assuming you're stock and didn't root or do any tweaks?
Just update, all of your settings and such will still be there.

OTA 4.0.2, it is rooted for the Titanium Backup, stock ROM and kernel (4.0.1, KK1-Baseband, 3.0.1 Kernel), no other tweaks I am aware of.
An OTA update doesn't erase anything..

I'm in a similar kind of position and I think that provided you have standard recovery the update will work fine and you'll lose no settings although I've seen some suggestions you'll lose root by updating. Not sure how it would affect you if you have a non-standard kernel tho...

Having root doesn't mean anything. As long as you didn't do any changes to the kernel, or anything outside of /sdcard/ even though you have root. You'll be fine, it won't wipe anything. Just accept the OTA and everything will be okay.
I'd recommend using https://market.android.com/details?...m9yZy5wcm9qZWN0dm9vZG9vLm90YXJvb3RrZWVwZXIiXQ.. as it will keep your root access post-OTA.
@daz.g: Not having the stock kernel provided by Google and accepting the OTA is a huge-nono and will most likely fail. You can keep root with the app I linked above. But using stock ROM + stock kernel + root, your options are rather limited and it's better off going off with Custom ROMs. If people are going to be risky and root, might as well go all the way. Risking and flashing ROMs aren't even that scary
