SD Card Partition sizes with Apps2SD

Hi everyone,
i was just wondering about what partition sizes I should set for my memory card using Apps2SD as I am a little unsure. I am currently using a 8 GB SD Card.
I was thinking to set it up with a 32mb swap, 512m-1gb ext2, and the remainder as fat32? Is that suffice? the ext2 size I assume is the space I would dedicate for the installation of apps.
Then after that, should we convert ext2 to ext3?

I wouldn't use swap at any time. Your phone has 578 MB of Ram - I don't know how much is left for the running system after the substraction for radio, 3d,.... but it still should be around 400MB. Using swap would just slow down your phone.
A 256 MB ext partition for programs is enough.

Kind of depends, I will for sure get a bigger partition then 256MB, some games are 20/30MB in size. Will be nice to not worry about those anymore!

I just installed apps2sd then started installing was I meant to do different? lol

Hello guys,
I'm a newbie with Android.
I've not understood: with A2SD I can "migrate" all apps to sdcard or there is a way to choose what to have on the device and what to have on sdcard?

I have this question too. are all the apps going to the sdcard or you choose where to go ???? or when the phone memory fills the sdcard is used ???
and another question I have is if the sdcard apps are copy paste backup able

I have read that if set to 0, no swap partition will be created. The default is 32MB.

Im not using a swap.
I just created my ext2 using gparted on Linux. I resized the original fat32 and then used the free space to create ext2. No data was lost on original partition after resize

Hi there,
im not a big user of apps and won't end up installing many to the sd card. Would you suggest I set up the partitions as follows:
0mb swap, 512m-1gb ext2, and the remainder as fat32?
I have also read that if you convert EXT filesystem from EXT2 to EXT3 after partitioning, it results in better stability/performance, and by converting the EXT filesystem from EXT3 to EXT4 results in best stability/performance.
Can anyone clarify this please?

This is where i'm getting confused... this article, for example, states to allocate 32 MB to the linux-swap partition, 512 MB ext2 partition, and remaining free space as a fat32 partition (for an 8GB SD Card).
It also states this is the most common setup...

I used 980mb for my a2sd not swap and everything seems to be working just fine

Im just thinking... the Android OS is designed to do this for you, when it runs low on free memory it starts closing apps based on a ranking system for deciding which is 'least important' to avoid actually running out. If you later switch back to an app that the OS has removed from memory it will be reloaded from internal storage which won't be as quick as if the app was still in memory, but on the other hand it won't be any slower than if it was being loaded into RAM from the swap partition on the SD card.
Actually, I can't see swap helping... Either the Android OS will avoid running out of physical memory as it's supposed to and never actually use the swap partition, or worse it does actually use it as if it was extra physical memory (unlikely, I think) which will interfere with the sophisticated memory management scheme that's already there. Is this the reason why Android phones don't ship configured for swap? maybe because the OS is already doing something better that makes swap unnecessary?

As long as you followed the correct procedure (accessing recovery, installing the Apps2SD.zip file via recovery and set the partitions), then you are set.

I've set no partions mate all ive done is flashed it in recovery that's it

Well, what would be the point of installing Apps2SD then if you did not allocated extra space to the ext2 partition

You will not need to hard reset, just access recovery again via Linux and select the option to Partition the SD in recovery mode, enter the partition sizes you want, then you may want to select the option: convert ext3 to ext4 for improve stability/performance. Yes, use the Gold Card SD.

Out of memory errors

Using opendesire rom, and now my internal free memory is 9% and its shutting down my Widgets. I've moved everything I can to the SD card. What else can I do?

Android system info says I have 147.62 MB Max internal memory. Is this correct or can it be upped with a different rom?

you use Froyo App2SD which does not move the whole app to the SD card and some apps, like Widgets, don't work if moved at all.
If you need more free space use APP2SD+ instead, which natively is supported by OpenDesire, you just need a proper EXT partition and have to completely re-flash the ROM.

Please point me to more details on how to do that.

backup your phone apps using Titanium Backup or MyBackup Pro, do a Nandroid backup of the whole phone (boot in Clockwork mod and use Nandroid to do a full backup)), then backup your SD-Card.
After you've finished this, open ROM Manager on your phone and use the partition tool. Create a 512MB EXT partition, no SWAP needed. Your phone will reboot, automatically enter the recovery mode, completely delete the SD card and create a 512MB partition, next to your FAT32 partition.
After that, do a full wipe in the recovery. Everything gets deleted on your phone. Then flash the latest OpenDesire ROM or any other ROM supporting A2SD+. Activate in the OpenDesire settings (menu) the internal install location, so don't set it to external or automatic. Use Titanium Backup to restore your apps (make sure that you set in the properties to install it to the internal memory).
After you've done that, or before you do the app restore, check with Quick System Info if the EXT partition gets used.

well, it's just creating the EXT partition and starting from scratch
Yes, it uses the SD cards EXT partition as internal ram for both the apps and the dalvik cache.

For me it is. I have more than 100 apss installed, several games included. And about 200MB still free.

Where is the rom manager?
never mind found it in market.

Partitioning Sd Card Problem

Hi,
I partitioned sd-card with several ways but my htc desire does not see the ext2/ext3 partitions.
the configuration is that
ClockWork recovery 2.5.0.7
CyanogenMod-7 for Desire GSM V7.0.0-RC1
16 GB Class 4 Toshiba micro sdcard
latest try to partition sd card is now : 13,91 fat32 primary
1024 ext2 primary - tried also ext3
My Htc desire shows me as : sd card Total space : 13,91 GB
internal storage Total space : 148 MB
the ways that I used:
-Gparted-Live - success to partitioning
-Pmagic 5.10 - success to partitioning
-sdsplit with android terminal : - unsuccessful to partitioning
the file exist but when I try : - &su
- #/data/sdsplit -nd -fs 14350M
it says me : the file not found
-MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition - success to partitioning
-I tried also flashing ClockWork recovery to amon-ra 2.0 with unveroked 3.2 for partitioning sd card but it says me "error: failed to get root. ıs your firmware too new?" - unsuccessful
What should I do?
Please help?

Your internal memory does not charge when using a ext partition/a2sd. So how do you know it's not working.

I have AppsToSd tool installed and it always says me "it looks like your SD card isn't partitioned correctly..."
I do not know an other way if it's working...

That tool does not use the same a2sd solution, it uses the stock froyo one. You wouldn't need that tool if you were running a rom with a2sd / a2sd+

grab an app called quick system info from the market and in the basic info tab it lists a2sd storage and internal storage.
You'll know its working when you install something and the internal storage doesn't drop by the size of the app you installed.
Also if you use Rom manager from the market (after you're rooted) that can create the next partition for you. Just back up your card first since it wipes it.

this may sound stupid, but it happened to me.. When you create your partitions, are you making the EXT 2/3 first? it MUST be the first partition, wether it is listed as primary or not. I had sooo many fustrations till i figured out you must make the ext2/3 first, then the fat32 or whatever else.
Besides that.. WHY do you need a2sd? if you are using the CM7-RC1.. I'd recommend you use the CM7 HBOOT as well. that gives you a 300mb data which is tons of room.. just a suggestion.

You have to go S-Off (with AlphaRev.nl 1.8) and there you can select to use the Cm7 HBOOT.

[Q] Out of space, suggestions?

So I rooted my dads CDMA Desire and loaded Cyangomod 7 nightly on it and he loves it. Problem is, after loading all the apps back on it, he is now very low on disk space. I've found a couple of threads with solutions but I figured I would ask to see what most of you are using to address this problem. I have this issue on my Hero as well and have to flash a custom partition after I flash a rom etc.
Thoughts?

Download the s2e app from Android Market, it's written to work specifically with cyanogenmod. I have many apps installed and still have 50mb free space it's also the easiest solution to your problem!

you have two ways:
1.the more easy thing that you can do is that you can use Link2SD alongside a ext2 or ext4 partition on your sd card and move all the huge apps to there with the app
2.flash a custom HBoot table (I recommend CM one that will give you 287MB of /data partition) so you can install more apps on internal storage.. instructions at alpharev.nl

[Q] Moving Data partition?

I'm not an Android guru, i'm just investigating what's going on with my phone and now i'm completely lost after reading tons of topics & googling about all that Apps2SD, Data2SD, Data++ etc. stuff. I'm wondering is it possible to move the WHOLE DATA partition to SD Card, so original Data partition on internal memory would not be used? Like in Linux, where you can mount external disk over empty partition/folder. Thanks in advance.
