Hello everyone,
This is my first time posting on this forum but have used it in the past to port Android on to my old HTC Touch HD, and having seen what you guys are able to do am really, really hoping you will be able to help me.
I recently got a HTC desire on a new contract. The phone is unbranded/unlocked as I got it through E2Save. The phone is the S-LCD version of the HTC Desire and came pre-loaded with Android 2.2. However 2 weeks ago I recieved a message informing me on an OTA update for my phone. I cant remember specifics but it seemed to be a small update and something to do with improving the layout of the Russian keyboard, multiple email account support and something else.
Well to cut a long story short this mini update has bricked (seen the term used on varying forums) my wifi.
I have seen in a forum about booting back to 2.1 but it said this could break the screen on the SLCD version of the desire. Please if you have any information that can help me fix this please let me know.
I dont want to have to send it to the HTC repair centre and wait 15 days for this to be resolved as I have just started work, have no spare phones and pretty much rely on this phone to get me through my long and busy london commute.
Fingers crossed someone can help and I look forward to hopefully being able to use wifi again.
Cheers
Adam

sry for starting another thread about the known reboot bug but I have some questions and don't want to read 40 pages in other threads.
I am experiencing this problem since the update to 2.2 or maybe some weeks later, dont remember exactly. My desire reboots if I try browsing the internet over 3G/HSDPA I cant even load 2 pages or anything it crashes after about 1-2min in the browser. Over wifi there is no problem. I updated the firmware today but now it does not fully reboot, it gets stuck on the HTC logo(not the quietly brilliant one), so i have to remove battery to get it started. Its a stock desire nothing rooted or something it has no branding and i only installed some apps of the market.
Now my questions:
1)Was anyone able to fix this problem with rooting or applying a custom rom (or radio update)?
2)I bought it on amazon, does anyone have experience with their repair service (time, or will they send me a new one if asked correctly)?
3)I live in Austria, anyone knows how long the repair over HTC will take or where it will be send to?
thanks in advance and please excuse my bad English
Everyone else had to read the other pages...
Never had the issue myself
I read the last 10 pages and most people say its an overheating problem but mine is definitely a radio issue. Also I haven't read anything about trying custom roms or something, that's why I started this one. The other thing is that most users here are from UK or somewhere and I don't think that the customer service of HTC is the same in each country
1) HTC Desire has the reboot problem even when it doesn't appear 'warm'
2) Problem seems related to CPU activity (and therefore perhaps heat)
3) Definitely worse with GPS enabled
4) Hard reset - not fixed
5) Reflashed to Froyo .. not fixed - unlikely to be software related
6) Happens with no SIM card playing games
7) My Desire was bought from ebay (new) so no chance of repair (unless I send it to T-Mobile in Germany)
8) Bought a Samsung I9000 Galaxy S - problem fixed
9) Anyone want a part working HTC Desire?
Why did I buy from ebay .. because HTC have done an exclusive deal with Telstra for the HTC Desire in Australia and as a matter of principle will not use Telstra (an organisation that gouges its customers and competes unfairly) and even though the Desire handset is unlocked, the Telstra version is 850Mhz radio not 900mhz like all other Australian carriers use out of the metro areas.
It's always good to read through as your question is most likely already answered.
Now imagine if someone else comes after you and decides you know what I cant be bothered to read through thread I will just make another one.
The whole place would be flooded and spamed with one same question. Please don't be lazy.

Hi all.
I bought my HTC Desire sometime in May. I got it from someone that brought it from UK (Orange branded).
3 months later it started showing the signs of random reboot (the well known issue), and lately they have started happening daily. What's even worse, after 1-2 random reboots, the device sticks itself at the white HTC bootscreen and does nothing. No matter how long I leave it without battery the only solution I have found to bring my device back to life is:
1. Install a generic RUU (through PB99IMG.zip)
since I need/have non-generic ROM, I continue:
2. root it with unrevoked
3. install rom manager from market
4. restore the nandroid backup.
I do this all the time, in the beginning I used to do it ~weekly, lately I do it daily. This is getting worse and worse.
Anyway, let's get to the fun part.
I have decided to buy a new one, since I don't have a warranty for this one. I am in doubt a bit, that is why I decided to ask the community. I wonder about the future support from HTC for Desire, the knowledge that I will get a device with SLCD is killing me (seeing how better is AMOLED), etc... So what do you think, should I get a new Desire, should I get another device, or should I wait for something better soon?
Thanks all.
Anyone?
sell as faulty on eBay (should get about £200)
buy something newer, not saying that the Desire is bad (cos itsw NOT!) but technology moves on quickly so getting a newer device will last longer (as in you will appreciate it a lot longer)
would recommed the Desire Z or the Desire HD, however a lot more expensive...
Hello,
I have a HTC Desire HD that has just died on me, it just stopped detecting the SIM car. Everything else works just fine.
Gave it to HTC service here in India and they gave me a quote of 13000 INR ($260) to replace it. Since its out of warranty (15 days over) I'll have to bear the expense.
Now I got this phone for 25000 INR($500) it makes no sense to go for this replacement. Now my dilema here is what more can I do with this phone besides using it as a glorifed paper weight
I doubt root it would solve this issue. But would love to hear from you.
Kind regards
I'd just went out of the similar problem. One day my DHD turn off and... That's all ! It just turn of and never came back. I'd to send it to HTC support, they return it to me saying something like "we changed the motherboard".
Now I think "Whatdafuck is this phone whitch can die one day without any aparent reason !!". At it's next death I'll get a Motorola.

Atleast you were lucky that you device was under warranty. I am well and truly screwed.
cheers
Personally, I'd get it repaired, since you could easily get another years' use out of it (more, but other devices will start to make it look old).
That would then work out at $20/month, compared to say $40 ($500/12 months) for a new phone, even via an operator's subsidy.
I'd also let HTC do it so that they can respond directly, should anything go wrong.
Sorry I saw you replied.
If you pay the HTC support can repair your phone.

I would try to buy very cheap non working phone with broken digitizer or similar - many people (at least in europe) sell their phones when they are broken and get new ones. And I would change the mainboard myself. its not that difficult. Ive done it with my old htc topaz...
Suffering at the hands of HTC
Last week, my 1.5 years old Desire 816 was working absolutely flawlessly. 5 seconds later, I pick it up and it is dead! :crying:
The HTC Service Center guys are asking for Rs. 9,700 for changing the Motherboard and I am like WT*. I can buy a new phone at that price. A bit of research and find out that Motherboard issues are very common in HTC. This surely was my last HTC phone.
Now I have 2 questions:
1. Is there any way I can get this phone repaired in the open market?
2. I was using CDMA as my primary number. I am not finding any other reputed manufacturer who has CDMA smartphones. I am not willing to ditch CDMA as of now. Any suggestions for a good smartphone that is not HTC?
Hello everyone.
I'm having the same issue as quite a LOT of DHD owners, the same issue that seems to have no actual answer (I've done a lot of searching).
I get an Error whenever I try to turn on my wireless or wireless hotspot.
I have a non-rooted, no custom-ROM, Unlocked, Telus coded HTC Desire HD updated to Android 2.3.5 w/ HTC Sense 3.0. I am currently on Rogers Wireless, but the problem started while I was with Telus. I've spoken with Telus techs already, and the ones I've spoken with are completely incompetent and I'm really not sure why they work in that department. (I know it's mean but I know for a fact that most, if not all, of the Telus agents are 3rd party contracted employees that work for a contact centre, and they only get, and use, information that is provided by Telus. Most of the information is useless for these kind of issues.)
I noticed my wireless acting strange after the update came out (yes I know it was a long time ago). I had gotten the error half a dozen times, but a soft reboot would always fix it. I didn't unlock my phone until February, 2013. The issue started in... June or July 2012, I think..
I dropped my phone a couple times, landing on the left top hand corner once or twice, didn't get an error. Then one day I just wasn't able to get my wireless to work at all. Tethering worked fine until I unlocked it and moved from Telus to Rogers.
I've been unable to use wireless connectivity for half a year now, and after switching to Rogers Wireless (Telus doesn't cover the area that I now live in), I lost the 5gb data plan that I had, and only have 1gb data per month. I am quite a power user, and I now really need wireless connectivity so that I don't have to worry about going over my data limit. Sad to say but Rogers has terribly expensive plans.
I have tried:
-Cleaning battery cover contacts
-Hard reset (removing battery & waiting a few minutes before turning back on)
-Factory Reset (once, but now I'm afraid to lose all of my contacts that I can't seem to figure out how to back-up [if anyone has any advice on this off-topic, it would be nice to hear about that])
-adding IP/Gateway configuration
-Opening a ticket with HTC (I haven't had a reply from them in a week)
-Speaking to the [unknowledgable] techs at Telus
-Google
-Many android forum searches, including XDA, that lead to no actual answer, or answers that lead to custom ROMS (Which I'm trying to avoid because I can't seem to figure out how to properly install one)
I don't know what else to try, I love this phone and I don't want to have to spend $600 for a new one. (I hate contracts, and I'm currently on a month-to-month with Rogers Wireless)
If one of you can solve this problem, I swear I will give you all dah loves. :3

Try buying a new battery cover and sim cover can work sometimes.

That thanks button doesn't bite
HTC finally got back to me with a decent reply. The one who emailed me advised that I try a Wipe Cache Partition. I haven't done that yet, so I'm going to try and see what happens I suppose.
Update: Still nothing. Will have to try something else.
Hey Phooey. I have a similar issue with my DHD and people have been about as helpful as they can be without a logcat to search for errors. Here is the thread I started on my issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2269203. Tried to get HTC to fix it but they were no help at all.
I suggest you make a logcat and attach it to this thread so a dev can peruse it and hopefully help you out.
I'll definitely try that. I read through your thread and I'm starting to think that it could possibly be a hardware issue with my phone as well, seeing as the problem didn't start until I dropped it without the case on. I'm just happy DHDs have a nice sturdy construction.

Make sure the "flash" panel is secure (gps antennae are behind it - wifi too maybe, not sure). Tethering can be detect by a phone network so wouldnt surprise me if they could stop it too! Contacts can be automatically backed up with your google account in settings/accounts/google and make sure contacts is ticked, as a secondary precaution you could use something like "my backup" off google play to backup things like contacts calendar entrys call log etc and also the apps you have installed.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackup
If you go down the route of rooting you could try different roms to see if the problem persists across severel roms and if so then that would indicate a hardware issue

Exactly what has happened to me and my old (but faithful) HTC Desire. Did you get a solution?
(I am going to try this htcdesireforum.com/htc-desire-troubleshooting/wifi-'error'-after-installing-android-2-2/msg9369/#msg9369 )
Dialling a code worked for me.

Try dialling *#*#526#*#* on the phone keypad. This worked for me.
HTC Desire HD A9191 (Ace) DHD Gingerbred 2.3.5 Stock ROM
Hello. I just made an account here my friend told it is the best site ever made for android users.
My problem starts with that, i own a smartphone called HTC Desire 300, last time i used it was like 5-6 months ago, then it all worked, display and stuff. Then i put that in box because i got another phone and now, today i took it out from there again and saw a weird thing, i have a grey circle around my display, i add a screenshot, and now if i put it on display aint working. Does someone know what can cause it? Do i have to buy new display ( last time it worked, 2 weeks before i ended relationship with that one 5-6months ago then i got a new touchscreen changed ". Does anyone know what is the problem?
So sorry about my English, i hope you can understand.
Much love XDA!
