Hi everyone! We are currently in the middle of porting the MIUI ROM to our mdpi devices (g1, hero, magic).
We have successfully ported ALL of the pngs in all of the apks to be compatible with our devices. This was a huge undertaking and it was keeping a lot of devs from wanting to get involved. Now that this big "hinderance" is out of the way, I'm hoping some talented devs will be willing to get involved.
I have posted all the semi-ported apks (by semi-ported, I mean the images are all mdpi now) in a zip file that can be downloaded by any devs who are willing to help get the MIUI rom ported to our devices. If you'd like to download the MIUI mdpi apks, you can visit our thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858935
I don't have any dev skills, so I can't help beyond what I've already done. It is officially now in the hands of the community to take the next necessary steps to a full MIUI port. I hope that our two groups (hero and cdma hero) can cooperate in making this happen!
That is my reason for posting here.
Hope we can get this thing working!
-alex
This is great news like you said, converting all the image files to MDPI was a turn off for many devs. Hopefully some of them can jump onto this and get a working ROM for our GSM/CDMA hero's
Yes, hopefully some of the remaining dev's here will be willing to help out
I think many are busy with the 2.3 AOSP at the moment Have the MIUI devs agreed to release their source files??
On the movies I found about MIUI, you can see it's extremely smooth and fast!
If this is ported to MDPI devices our Hero will be reborn
I'll have a look at it right now.
good luck, sir.
Hmm still a big task AFAIK. It would probably be easier to port all the MIUI apks and files and what not to CM.
Well.. don't the devs have to edit every single .xml-layout-file to get the images in the right spots now?

Yes unless you do what I said and merge the MIUI apks and the CM apks but there are probably still lot's of specially made apks where you have to do that
I really hope someone completes this!!
hi man i'm really interested on this stuff! i love miui!
could i help you?
Yeah, the more devs are working on it the easier and faster it will be ported for our Hero ^^
If there is anything I can do for this, I'm ready guys
I totally agree but it seems to me like there's a lot of leg work to do so all we need is some instructions on what actually needs to be done. That way people who just want to help but are not actual devs may be able to contribute.
Are there any devs actually working on this port?

That is another viable option that we've considered. Honestly, though a fully working MIUI ROM would be preferable, a CM6 Rom that could run the miui apps would be fine as well. Better than what we have now: which is nothing.
Any new info?

I'll be a tester if you want.

I could be a tester. I have another account on the forum but I must get it back, LOL. So, reply to janne.paasimaa(at)gmail.com if you have something. I will follow that topic and I will tell ya my another account later.
@ OP
Hope this catches some devs eyes. I really hope some help out with a GSM port or possibly a CM8 based on ICS when its out
PS. Its better to put the date tag at begining of topic title in short format, ie [4.10.11]
You might want to have some pre-requisites for testers otherwise the vast majority of posts to this thread will be "Me too!!!11!" posts.
The primary difference between CDMA/GSM ports is at kernel level. The only real hardware difference is in the radio, touchscreen, processor, sound etc. are all the same.
I'ld like to help with it as much as I can, I do dev on my galaxy 3 now
If really the prime comes this month and we get ics sources we can forget honeycomb(although Google will need ta keep it sumwhere else, R.I.P. android.git.kernel.org)
I will defenitly be a tester, no matter what ...
I would gladly help if you show me where I could find tutorials for developing for android so I could help out. I must add I have some good experience with C/C++ and some with C#. If you would be so kind to send me a PM with some tutorials I would gladly help
i would love to be a beta tester but i cant make a nandroid backup on kratos.. any ideas?
can't wait. I am so anxious.
thanks DEV's for all the hard work in advance!!!
I very much doubt any real devs are going to bother with HC now. Spacemoose abandoned it without notice or explanation which is a real shame as he seemed really dedicated to the cuase, and oldmacnut looks like he has given up on challenge aswell.
IMO this is now just wishful thinking. Our best bet is to wait for ICS source to drop.
I have an early port of oldmancut's latest HC release I'm uploading right now,but this evening I can't test so I'm posting it here for the braves who can test
It's based upon old kernel sources and MAY wipe internal SD as old builds. ETA: 50 minutes!

spacemoose1 he doesn't need to explain why he abandoned the project
you must know , everyone here have another life outside the XDA forum
if he got the time , we should has it along time ago , but he doesn't have the time
cheer up ,
anyways , trust me , HC is not that good , GB is away better
HC is so damn bugy lagy crap , i use gtab10.1 and i can't tell you how many lags i get per second , so how about a ported hc ? how it will be you think ?
Lets stop banging our head on closed source HC . ICS is most probably coming on 11 october in samsung unpacked google episode.
ok i did flash it..
these errors come's up afhter boot.
Gmail (proces.com.google.android.gm) stopt
moon phase pro (proces.com.daylightmap.moon.pro.android)
gun bros (proces.com.glu.android.gunbros_free)
messages (proces.com.android.mms)
after close all errors it goes to the honescreen.
menu button not working.
home and back working.
auto turn screen not working.
keyboard don't show when trying to connect with wifi.
when i push the power button ones it reboots.(normali it put off the screen only.
btw boots in 35 sec..so pretty fast
all software still working.so it did not wip anything.
i will come back with more in a while..
hope it helps a bit so far.
regards stef
Downloading, will report asap...
Edit:
Booted in a minute or so, it gave me a Welcome screen with the list of languages and the Start button, I can choose language but nothing happens when I press the button so can't move further...
Wiped again and reflashed - same result. Stuck for now...=\
Btw, when the screen goes to sleep, it sends the device into reboot after a few seconds.
2sevensheaven, how did you pass through the Welcome screen?..
i just pushed the next button en cancel..
and like u say..when the screen goes out..it reboots.
i will now try a factory reset and see what happens.
Hello everybody here,
so lots of us said that we should have a "Spamming" thread for CM9 and 4.0 Android development made by Maclaw's DevTeam-thanks for them, again . So here it is:
Please guys, if you have any bugs and problems which are already mentioned in GitHub, but you don't care to "ask-first-then-shoot", then post your problem here.
Please, write here, and really, don't annoy dev's on their DEV thread. That's for them to submit upgrades, news, and stuff.
Thanks anyway, and please, let the Dev's work in the calm way it should be.
Spam and post your heartbreaks here
Thnx for the thread. I feel like I can post my non-contructive post yet not clutter the dev thread
I following/trying CM9 closely. It looks very promising can't wait for the finished ROM
I should make some time to properly test/bugreport in git.
Should be in general, not there.

have u ever thought, that 'tards constantly flaming and making EXCEPTIONALLY unnecessary threads such as this one, are in fact much worse than noobs whining about their gallery not working?
Seriously though, I've been following Maclaw's thread for weeks, and the spam is no where near annoying as some "certain efforts" to end it.
Haters gonna hate, noobs gonna noob, deal with it.
p.s i consider myself a noob as far as android goes. But i don't whine about it, and don't shout at people on forums.
p.s2 somehow I doubt that this message will make the impact I intended it to make... sad.
Oh, and another thing - how do you define "spamming" and it's relation to the original post? I'm not much of a linguist myself, but something tells me you're not either, therefore both of us should keep our mouths shut...?
Oh 2.0: did i mention that this whole thread is a spam? ( and what is it we do with spam nowadays huh? )
You made good points. I don't spam myself as I see others do. At first I thought this was a good idea. So the course of action is to kill this thread or let it die.

feiks- if you dont feel that this therad is necessary, then ignore it. there are some people who think this is a good one, although Maclaw is right, this should be in general.
And yes, spaming the DEV post is something like the whining of ~15 people that gallery is not working, camera is not working...if they'd read first, then they would know what they can get from this rom.
Though, ignore this post if it's unnecessary for you.
For the others, enjoy.
A quick point about creating new threads and where to place them.

Are you actively developing something?

Yes.

Thread should go in the Development section

No.

Intentionally creating threads in the wrong place, just annoys other users and creates work for me. In future think about where to place your thread.
If after creating a thread you think, "I should of posted that in 'General'". PM me or report the post, I'll happily move it.
Thank you
It was my fault to place it to development.

Loving the ICS ROM by Maclaw and the gang - awesome work - it keeps getting better and better with each release.
Android is new to me so still learning - trying to get text to speech working, of course to try out a Siri like app.
I cannot seem to find where to turn on text to speech. I have tried a couple of apps and it appears that it is not on - and I cannot find where to turn it on.
Thanks in advance for any help

Finally I can say something about CM9 and ICS. I've been quietly reading the development thread from the beginning and thanking developers' posts for many months.
Anyway, I read that next release will be faster and with more working settings. I can't wait to try it out. I tried Beta 2, because it got generally good feedback before, and I thought that maybe it is good enough for daily usage. True, it is functional enough, but just a bit too laggy and glitchy for my liking. It was a good experience to test it, and all in all it didn't seem that much different from Gingerbread afterall. I miss the ability to put widgets on homescreen by simply longpressing, now you have to go to app drawer and search there - but I'm sure I will get used to it in time. I like the new setup of settings menu though.
But my message to the development team and everybody else who helps them: Good luck and thank you! I will continue "thanking" your posts in the dev topic. We are lucky to have active CyanogenMod developers on our rather not-so-good and not-so-popular phone, and good developers too - Phiexz and Maclaw as the main men, but also others. Kudos.
Im dreaming about 3.0.8 kernel (or new) on ics 4.0.3 on Gio
If i get a new sms the phone wont viberate..
I have the silent profiel turned on but still normally i would hear the viberating sound getting a new message. This is a bit anoying cose often i have to react right away.
Any one know how to turn on the viberating?
Hi,
I installed beta3.
I can't download s2e from the market. Is any version that works with cm9?
Thanks
The betta 3 is a lot better alread. Things that dont work for me atm are: Camara (I did try other cammera apss to. No succes) The foto galary app will crash (I only have like 280 fotos. Kids there fun)
Playing movies (Xvid/divx) and mp3 does not really work well.
Thats it for no.. Got to work again.
Why Spam?
Just help Dev friends. Your support would encourge them to work hard on softwares. Sorry for bad bad english
There is a discussion in CM9 development topic about bootlogos. Am I the only one who doesn't care about it? I've disabled it anyway for faster booting. Why is bootlogo so important for some? For all I care it could be a steaming dog turd, it doesn't matter
First a quick shout out to Albinoman who made the JB rom in question here (I'll put a link to it at the bottom of this post). He did an amazing job and I am thoroughly enjoying jelly bean goodness on my very old and abused incredible.
I should mention (if it helps someone figure out what happened) that the device has been torn apart by myself multiple times to solve two issues: (and for fun)
The first being the display was shattered and had to be replaced,
And the second being that the device had been laid down in something wet for over a week while not in my possession, covering the internal parts with said wet..ness.. (no idea what it was). A few days disassembled in rice fixed the wetness issue and it worked perfectly!
Now I fixed some other software issues it was having (lost root after a failed rom flash) and loaded cm6.1 onto the device, and then cm7.2, and then this JB rom.. in one afternoon....... (gets addicting after only one flash!!). It was doing fine all day with only issues with the camera and Google chrome until I went to mess with the sound settings and went to: settings/ sound/ volumes. When I tapped volumes it said, "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped." All sound no longer works.. A battery pull, multiple restarts with setting changes, and finally a factory reset later and nothing has changed. Thanks for reading this much too long post. any ideas what I should do next?
As promised, here is a link to Albinoman's rom which I highly recommend checking out.
fixed sound issue
I'm still kicking myself over this.. I put the speaker in backwards.. yep.. now would be a good time to learn how to delete a thread..
btw, many devs, Albinoman included, would appreciate it if you ask questions that are related to their roms, on the rom's original post. just a heads up man.

Actually q&a is for questions of anything related to the device and the rom threads as I understand is supposed to be only for posts contributing to development of that project but you're right most devs including me like when issues/questions are in the ROM thread.
Hey I got an idea. Remove the 10 post rule to post in dev but not allow creating topics in dev until 40 or 50 posts.

For a few months I've been reading everything I can so I can make a ROM of my own. I finally started building it with ICS LI3 and I am loving every second of it...
However, today I decided I wanted to give Jelly Bean a shot... So for the last few hours I've been trying to remember "Okay, what images did I edit again?" and "Which smali file was that tweak in?" and "Where was that thread with the how to?" Basically trying to remember every little detail that I had changed and re-creating it in Jelly Bean. Then I had an epiphany of sorts. I realized "I will, pretty much, have to do this with every new update that gets released. UHG!"
So, to the developers out there who do the same for all of us, I thank you. Not only have you inspired me to try my hand at something completely new to me, but you do this every day, every update, every new OS release. Some of you for every new device.
So truly, I thank all of you.

I just want to send my gratitude to everyone here who is always willing to help people like myself, those who love Android and all it offers but need some help and guidance with how to make full use of it.
Thanks again to everyone who have done so much to make my experiences with the OG Epic and now the SGS3 such a wonderful experience.

I felt the same... sort of why I put off updating my ROM for so long. But I finally got around to it. The key is making notes, and using diff'ing/compare software such as UltraCompare. It makes tasks like this much much easier.
Also, if you're doing any smali editing, it will make the job much easier to always keep a stock file from the previous update laying around, so that you can compare your changes to stock, then apply them to new updates. I have thought up a number of tricks to make updating software easier, but these are probably my most valuable.

Every dev has his own tricks at keeping up to date
I'm glad some people appreciate our work and THIS is why I won't stop
I've used a program called ExamDiff to see the differences between the files I need to edit. It helps sometimes.. But I've made a few mistakes and needed to decompile working mods of my own only to find out the notes I have made in it did not appear in my newly decompiled apk.. Lesson learned.
I'm glad you and freeza especially found this thread. I've followed a few of your guides that you two have generously posted for the rest of us. Those have helped me quite a bit and given me a chance to find other things that I may not have necessarily found on my own.
Thanks again guys!

The devs have a few tricks up their sleeves. I would assume that most of them are using some kind of version control to keep track of all their changes (and keep their sanity). Good version control probably even allows them to copy their changes to new updates pretty painlessly.
I can't speak for anyone else, but any time I start even a small project, I start a git repo for it. It makes it easy to backtrack when I screw something up.
