Hi everyone! We are currently in the middle of porting the MIUI ROM to our mdpi devices (g1, hero, magic).
We have successfully ported ALL of the pngs in all of the apks to be compatible with our devices. This was a huge undertaking and it was keeping a lot of devs from wanting to get involved. Now that this big "hinderance" is out of the way, I'm hoping some talented devs will be willing to get involved.
I have posted all the semi-ported apks (by semi-ported, I mean the images are all mdpi now) in a zip file that can be downloaded by any devs who are willing to help get the MIUI rom ported to our devices. If you'd like to download the MIUI mdpi apks, you can visit our thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858935
I don't have any dev skills, so I can't help beyond what I've already done. It is officially now in the hands of the community to take the next necessary steps to a full MIUI port. I hope that our two groups (hero and cdma hero) can cooperate in making this happen!
That is my reason for posting here.
Hope we can get this thing working!
-alex
This is great news like you said, converting all the image files to MDPI was a turn off for many devs. Hopefully some of them can jump onto this and get a working ROM for our GSM/CDMA hero's
Yes, hopefully some of the remaining dev's here will be willing to help out
I think many are busy with the 2.3 AOSP at the moment Have the MIUI devs agreed to release their source files??
On the movies I found about MIUI, you can see it's extremely smooth and fast!
If this is ported to MDPI devices our Hero will be reborn
I'll have a look at it right now.
good luck, sir.
Hmm still a big task AFAIK. It would probably be easier to port all the MIUI apks and files and what not to CM.
Well.. don't the devs have to edit every single .xml-layout-file to get the images in the right spots now?

Yes unless you do what I said and merge the MIUI apks and the CM apks but there are probably still lot's of specially made apks where you have to do that
I really hope someone completes this!!
hi man i'm really interested on this stuff! i love miui!
could i help you?
Yeah, the more devs are working on it the easier and faster it will be ported for our Hero ^^
If there is anything I can do for this, I'm ready guys
I totally agree but it seems to me like there's a lot of leg work to do so all we need is some instructions on what actually needs to be done. That way people who just want to help but are not actual devs may be able to contribute.
Are there any devs actually working on this port?

That is another viable option that we've considered. Honestly, though a fully working MIUI ROM would be preferable, a CM6 Rom that could run the miui apps would be fine as well. Better than what we have now: which is nothing.
Any new info?

Hey Guys,
I've noticed many other phones have guides explaining how to download and compile Android for their phones including proprietary drivers and misc files. I know CM6/CM7 and MIUI all are very clearly doing this but I was wondering if we could get any kind of documentation like that for the Epic? It doesn't have to include any super detailed coding information other then how to download AOSP, Samsungs required drivers, and build them into a "working" rom of some kind..
The drivers and kernels you guys have been using so far must be available via some kind of git command..
I'd love to be able to compile a ROM just to learn about it lol.
Think a quick and dirty write up for compiling a rom could happen? I think it would really help incoming developers and newbies alike.
+1 on this.
+1 as I would like a good starting point...
Samsung Epic using Team Viper's latest ROM and kernel
I'm glad to see some support for this. I sincerely hope a developer takes this seriously enough to help us out!
I'm answering my own question here
Check it out... it's how to build CM for the epic. Anyone interested in learning the process could probably follow this guide and accomplish it. Took it from the CM post in General.

Thank you! That is very interesting. I must try it!

I'm trying it now for fun... still downloading the source... the first repo sync takes a while, I believe it's a few GB's in size..
I don't believe this includes the kernel though... I'm sure it's posted somewhere for those interested in looking at it.. just gotta dig around.

Steps seem to be broken.. the ./get-rommanager and ./getgooglefiles -v HDPI or whatever both don't work because of broken web links.
Seems this hasn't been updated in a while..
I tried to go on without them following the directions but it doesn't work, says something about the vibrant? idk.. I think the directions would need updating to work properly.. at least the code was fun to look at.
Still hoping a developer can teach us how to compile lets say just 100% AOSP for our phones using our progress so far with the drivers.. i think the drivers need to be their own branch of code so all devs can use them for their own roms.. maybe it's already like this? Idk pretty new to rom compiling.
This is now obsolete, Erasmux has ported the hardware (some of it) which i am havign trouble doing.I dont intend to steal his work so please use his!

Well no bug or something, but I've added the rom on my mirror . here
Good luck with this. It's great to see that there are still some people who believe in a 2.2 sense rom for the hero
when the rom is tested a bit i will add it to my rom database
dude, you built a rom! congrats on being so bleeding edge bonesy!
I'm impressed with your guts
um, don't take this the wrong way, but I'm not about to try it just yet... ;-) It's just because I need my phone and it's camera etc for daily use. I have faith in you - you've been messing with this stuff longer than I have probably dude and your flashing instructions are VERY clear which is comforting.
I'm really impressed that you persevered like this though man!

Like I said gonna give it a try when at work. Great work man. And ill report back in here all my findings.

hi there!
I'm a bit puzzled how to revert to pre-MTD changes state.
I am willing to test this rom, but I would like to have an option to nandroid back without much of a problem. I read through the topic bonesy linked, but haven't found a simple answer/solution.
I hope I could help some more, at least confirm bugs or something.
Cheers!

EDIT:
Is it as simple, as flashing "remove" zip?
Nearly, you will need to re-flash recovery too, Through fastboot..
Im struggling at the moment as i have 2 different builds on 2 different computers. As soon as i can get to my work computer i can carry on with it all
Call me stupid but is CustomMTD really necessary ? This rom can't work as all roms do? I've flashed it without MTD method and I am stuck on first splash-screen (mine says HERO on black background).
BTW ty for working on a Froyo Sense port for Hero GSM
omg Ninpo is involved, <3 him (nogay)
I will try when it's a little bit better ^^ and can be used for 1 day at school

@bonesy. how are you hoping the development of this ROM will be community driven? Would you like us to simply try it and report bugs (no different to most other ROMS I think) or would you like us to get down and dirty with code wherever possible?
Im just a regular user but i'd like to help with the development of this rom. if i was pointed in the right direction I would even be willing to learn about how to develop this rom!
anyway good effort for starting on this (I expect, long) journey

Well took a quick look at this. Will try to devout some more time over the next few days and see if it'll get me anywhere.
What I got for now is:
a) There is quite a lot of "junk" on the system partition here, after a short cleanup it fits very nicely without the MTD patch .
b) libwebcore.so fixes the browser crashes and most likely the markets too.
If I have time tomorrow I'll try to give the microphone a shot, cause this is the most critical problem at this point - whats the point of having a telephone you even talk to...
Hopefully I'll also release something for testing tomorrow...
Thanks Erasmux, i would have gtalked you today but been at work and the boss was in...so no devvin on the work pc lol.Got market and browser fixed as you say and also rotate and i think light sensor.I removed nabservice.apk as it only FC'd.Would be great if we can arrange a time over the W/end to talk
Opened a new thread for "my" version of this port:

Please note, that the amount of effort I will be able on such a (closed source) ROM is limited. I mainly what to see how far I can get this, especially in terms of hardware support, with my past experience.
So its up to you if you want to continue to keep your version going in parallel. If you do (or anyone else), please feel free to reuse anything from "my" ROM....
I've seen all over that you can't put the sense camera in an AOSP ROM, but I'm afraid I just don't get why. I keep seeing its about framework or something, but could someone offer a better explaination? Like maybe more detail or something. Explain to me like you would to someone who knows very little about this stuff, but just enough to understand at a good explainaton.

The sense camera is dependent on both sense framework (which isn't present in cm7) and sense libs (which are also replaced by aosp libs) when the app is converted to .dex to run in the dalvik VM it can't find the proper lib and framework files and fc's. Hope that helped some lol
I'd like to know why, as well. The AOSP camera sucks, unfortunately. Sense will always be a great camera, and MIUI in second place (although recently it's been a distant second) so usually when I'm running AOSP I'll snag a miui camera apk and use it to replace the standard AOSP camera in the system folder.
That makes more sense now... Although, I wish someone could make the MIUI camera more like sense camera. The sense camera is AMAZING!! So, if someone could modify the sense camera to make it compatible with AOSP, I'd probably give them a big hug lol.

If you could do that, you'd be the hero of xda lol. I did see where the nexus prime (yes, i'm choosing to call it that over galaxy nexus) has the zero shutter lag for taking instantaneous pictures. Since i just shattered my inc2 screen yesterday, i'll be first in line to get it.
Well, I would love to get to know code and stuff, and even try to start dev'ing, but right now my computer is busted. Lol so once I get my computer fixed, I'm gonna look into developing some. If anyone has some resources for development they could share that'd be awesome. Like where should I start reading??

Java is the programming language used for apps, yes. Most recognized devs would tell you that simply taking an existing ROM and replacing or editing some apps does not make a rom. To really begin learning how to make roms, you need some linux experience to compile kernels, etc. You need to start by learning programming languages, grab a good linux distro and learn how to use it, and learn how all the parts of android work together.

What does aroma have to do with it? Many here prefer the unthemed roms. That's why my rom is a stock base, even tho I prefer a theme. Themes are a add on in my updater so that everyone wins.

I'm saying that because of Aroma you can pretty much do whatever you like to an extent....therefore, there aren't many devs themeing. If we didn't have the luxury of Aroma, this section would definitely have at least a handful of themes.

That has nothing to do with stand alone themes. 1 developer making a theme aroma installer doesn't stop the entire forums. Joshbeach has his own theme applied to his rom. Sleshepic has his own theme applied. My rom has available themes.
Those who usually make stand alone themes are the ones who don't have there own rom, so they make a universal theme. It wouldn't make sense for the rom creators to make universal themes on top of their rom.
I also believe the community here prevents more themes from being created. Go read a thread like Jellybomb and every page has someone complain about the theme. I assume that's why Sleshepic made a mostly stock themed rom. And that's why my base is mostly stock themed.
I had one member who tried Lab Rats and was bashing it in another rom thread for having a custom boot animation and pull down. What's a rom if there is nothing specific to the rom?
Obviously I'm only speaking on my behalf and my thoughts, not anyone else mentioned in this post.

I'm not sure it is the community preventing anything.
People with chops for, or a desire to learn Android OS building/theming usually go right at making a full ROM rather than a theme for another ROM on the Sprint Note 2. That is just the way this device on Sprint has been. Even folks who are admitted beginners at the dev game, basically have taken a handful of standard patches (4-way reboot/all-apps-in-multi-window/Perseus-Kernel for example) applied them to the latest vanilla deodexed ROM and then themed the snot out of it as a new fll ROM rather than a theme patch....when they could have just themed the snot out of someone else's ROM which already basically had all the patches they wanted. I don't mean to single or look down on any one dev or person's work out in that statement, just to be clear. It is just an observation.
Hence the current situation we have...lots of folks of varying ability all pushing out their own themed TWiz ROMs, all with basically the same patches between them. It is an easy comparison to Ubuntu linux, and the dozens (hundreds rather) of themed clones that Ubuntu has....when people could just make a red theme for Ubuntu, rather than using RemasterSys and cooking an entire new Ubuntu Red themed distro.
Where's the community preventing anything? I mean maybe if devs made thorough documentation on how to theme the TWiz ROM available it would help....but that is more work for devs with lives, and that is still not the community at large's fault.

I guess I could have worded it better. I didnt mean it's the communities fault there is no themes, I just don't believe there had been much of a desire for them. I have seen more anti theming posts then requests for them in general. Then there is the user above that says all we need is the Aroma theme chooser, if everyone is happy with that, then it doesn't encourage others work. I started with helping anothers rom on my last phone.
I have a few people over here that we have taken under our wing to learn, that's what keeps xda alive. I have answered multiple pm's asking for help, and do my best to help them. It's annoying tho when you repeatedly help someone and they don't even Thank you in the op, but that's a different matter.
There are many tutorials available on how to theme, all you have to do is search. While most roms have some of the same features like 4 in 1 reboot, I believe that's because it's considered a must have to most users.
OP could google how to port it, but chooses not to try or failed and didn't get help. Users should be more proactive in my opinion, but only they can choose to.

I hadn't seen the theming guides for TWiz for making a theming patch...then again I hadn't looked.
I think most end-user people are usually against it, as theming is a personal choice and what pleases one person inevitably causes 2 more people's eyes to wince in pain. Hence why (the PITA of keeping) Morphology is a cool thing for those that want a themed TWiz....but on the dev side, keeping all of Morphology working is a PITA like I said. We've been swearing at Morphology and MA7 of late behind the scenes.
Users could be more proactive....but at the same time, there's cost and reward and how many headaches you're willing to go to to just change the color of say the SMS or SPen app.
I doubt there is a guide that will tell you where every file is because tw is such a pain with its naming. I couldn't of the top of my head tell you where a lot is, I tear apart apps and find what I think is it and test it. It's a lot of trial and error.
You can Google big parts of it tho, I have done it myself to find stuff when I was stuck. Maybe I will make a thread with some basic locations like status bar pngs. I don't know how many people would find it useful, but I guess we can see how many people are willing to try stuff on there own.

Well...and as soon as such a database or wiki document or whatever is compiled....the next TWiz update will render all of it obsolete.
Theming touchwiz is a pita because the roms are all different. My theme is based on stock, and it actually comes from my own rom, but it has taken me many, many hours to get it the way I want it. First you spend a ton of time themeing the stock rom, then devs come out with tweaked roms, and now people want you to go back and tweak you theme for each rom, or add tweaks that are rom specific to your theme, etc. It also seems like samsung/sprint tweak little bits of stuff between each leak/update so everytime something changes there is a resources that change so you have to recompile the whole freaking thing.

Okay, so I've had i317 for about 4 months now, its a great phone. I would just love to see an ics 4.0.4 rom, be it stock or aosp,, aokp, etc for this device. The reason being is that there are alot of apps I used to use, such as UMA and a few others I cannot remember as of right now. Forgive me if this isn't the correct area to post the question lol. But can anyone possibly help me with my issue I'm having? A. ort or something would be ideal if possible.
On a side note: I have some prior knowledge with developing roms and getting them to work fully and such, like betas alphas and what not. just haven't gave much thought as to post on the forum untill now. So I'm not completely of the noob calibur so to speak.
Lastly, my final question, would anyone be interested in deving up a 100% pure custom 4.3 rom that is completely Pokemon themed right down to the contacts and dialer. I will include more detail upon request, also one that isn't 10.1 based or cm in general. The reason I say non cm based is because volume+ sound boost breaks the speaker and crackles pretty badly, and i am partialy deaf so the apk is much needed. Any help would be be very appreciated and id be eternally greatful.

It's not going to happen. The note 2 was shipped with 4.1.1 (or higher) so there is no 4.0 source for devs to work with.
Also, since pretty much every AOSP rom uses the CM Theme Manager, it's not that common to see themed roms (there are exceptions, but they tend to be lightly themed). Either find a CM theme to your liking or learn to theme your rom.
Sorry my friend...
You aren't the only one wanting it...
I'd even take a nice CM6 ROM for this device...
But as mentioned... It's just a dream... g

Okay, well shoot. Could you at least tell me that the possibility to get an apk to adapt and work on a newer rom is possible? I ask this because the main reason for me asking a dream question is simply that I love the ultimate mobile armor apk. it is the best privacy apk ever thought of. It was removed for reasons unknown. Back when I had my S3 and I717, it worked on both. Sadly it will not stick on the rooms I run currently. (Cleanrom 5.0, lionrom 2.1, etc.) Could the scripts and such be altered somehow for it to be compatible? On the S3 I always ran cm10 and its stick. Any thoughts, ideas and suggestions that are helpful and or leading to an apk exactly similar to ultimate mobile armour would be greatly appreciated.

Apk alteration is very possible ...
The trick is finding a dev to work it out ...and since apps are owned by their respective creators ...you would need permission from him/her to use or modify the code...
And I've always said it ...
A few emails and pm's go a long way..
Hit up the dev and see what you can learn ...g

Ive looked and searched and I've found nothing from the devs of this apk. Its been completely stricken from the web. What are my other options here as far as these apk Modding concerns go? I've found nothing for secure mobile sadly.
I see...
That being said ...it appears the app has been killed off for legal reasons ??
And lookout mobile is inferior how ??
Most of these security apps are monitored via 3rd party in addition to device activity ...
So it stands to reason that if your service for the apk is dead....it won't work anyway..
Best advice...pick an alternate and move forward....
Lookout and AVG are both exceptional ...and many others are available ..
Norton or Mccaffe possibly too...
Happy hunting ...and sorry I couldn't be of more help...g
