Cant send MMS or reply to email. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have noticed for the last month not being able to send a MMS or reply or send gmail email. I think this started after installing Baked Snack 1.7 ROM from Damage Control 3.2 ROM. I have since tried to fix it by installing Fresh 3.3 ROM, radio 2.15.00.09.01 and WIMAX 26023. The error i get when trying to send MMS is generic network failure. All other functions of the phone work normally as far as i know. Anyone else run across an issue like this?

Anyone have any suggestions?

Same for me today: no MMS after flashing a rom.

Tried that too, still nothing. I get the message fine, but it won't download over wifi or 3g nor can I send the messages

[Q] HTC Evo - can't download MMS

Does anyone know where the APN file is located? I mean the exact folder structure?
I have looked for it and can not find it. I am looking for it because I can not receive MMS or send MMS - it just acts like it is sending forever or downloading forever.
I have looked EVERYWHERE on these forums for the answer and I must be an idiot - because I can't find any info to help.
Here is what I am currently running....
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.09.01
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.17-gee557fdhtc-kernelatand18-2 #15
Build Number: Fresh Evo 3.5.0.1 by flipz
Software Number: 3.70.651.1
Browser Version: WebKit 3.1
PRI Version: 1.40_003
PRL Version: 60677
I really like the phone is working with this ROM - and I really don't want to reset it back to the factory settings....
Any info will be greatly appreciated!
try the free program "APN backup and restore"
You can dump your APNs to an xml file, check them out and modify them if necessary, and then reload them back into the phone easily
theres probly something wrong with the rom..or kernel havin the same issue with mikgin but hes fixin it also your pri maybe update it to at least 1.77? thoughts..never used fresh havent seen to many ppl that like it

HTC Evo 4G only receives MMS messages after i first restart it. So every time i get a new MMS i have to restart the phone. I just rooted it and flashed the Energy room. any suggestions, thanks
Well, what ROM are you running and what msg app? Have you taken the simple way out and tried using GO SMS? I'm not a big fan of this app but mostly if the ROMs local msg isn't receiving MMS, this will...

I used GO SMS but its the ROM itself. I checked another website and alot of people were complaining about it. Its the Energy ROM

Ahhh....OK OK....unfortunately I can confirm that I ran Energy as well about a month ago and I too had mms issues then. But that is not a reflection on the current version. Have you tried pulling a msg.apk out of another sense based rom? Try pulling it from Nitrous, I know that mms works on that.

Can't send or receive MMS on Sprint! Help!
I need some help here folks. So I had a lapse in thinking one day and "nearly" acceptance an OTA. I accidently clicked accept and immediately stopped it (shut off my phone etc). Well apparently it downloaded far enough to where the next time I reset my phone it installed it automatically. It didn't even tell me it was installing it just told me my phone had been updated. Now I need help. First here is the info on my phone...
Sprint Evo 4G running Ginger Bread (2.3.5), Kernel - 2.6.35.10-g4b48446. My phone is rooted, but I still have the stock ROM.
So my phone updated the software to the newest version 4.67.651.3. I know at the beginning of this thread there is an alert message about not downloading it (as with any OTA's on a rooted phone), but it did and now I'm here.
So my problem is that now I cannot send or receive MMS. It sits there acting like it's trying to send without ever sending it. Is it possible to revert back to an older software version (assuming this is what broke the MMS in the first place)? Help from any of you would be GREATLY appreciated!
I have the same problem running miui

[Q] Can't setup ActiveSync

Hi, just got my Epic Touch, coming from the Epic 4G.
Every time I try to setup my Exchange email, I get the error:
Setup Could Not Finish
Activation Failed. Unable to connect to network. Try again with the network provider's default APN.
Same error 3G, 4G, or WiFi. I didn't think CDMA phones even had APN's?
Found some related stuff: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098806&page=4
No solution that works. Spent 2 hours on the phone with Sprint, who were very nice, but had no solution. They are checking with higher ups and Samsung.
I don't have a lot of hope here, may be taking this phone back tomorrow when my insurance replacement arrives.
Thanks for any help you might have!
I've been getting the SAME error today.
I've been getting the same error since yesterday after flashing StarBurst 1.6. Having thought that was the problem I reverted back to the stock ROM and am still having the same issue.
I was on the phone with sprint for 45 minutes and they recommended I go to a retail store to have it diagnosed.
Other users in the Starburst Dev thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18480495&postcount=2067) reported similar issues and some were able to fix it by restoring app + data for Email 3.0.0.1. Trouble is I don't have a backup of this, so if anyone could be so kind as to provide that, it would be much appreciated.

Have you rooted your phone or installed a custom ROM, or is this a brand new untouched device?
same exact problem here. started occuring after i flashed starburst 1.6
Are you guys all running rooted and alternative roms? I am and had the same issue last night. I deleted the email app and cache and the restored it from a previously made titanium backup of the email app. I only restored the app. Then I went back and restored the data. Doing app and data at the same time did not work for me. I am currently pushing two exchange accounts a 2 gmail accounts. Working fine for me.

I am currently running [ACS][Odin]Completely Stock EG30 with the EG30Plus Kernel. I came from StarBurst 1.6, however removed it immediately because Active Sync wasn't working for me and I thought that ROM was causing the problem. I did not make any backups of the email app or data prior to flashing this ROM so I do not have anything to restore from.
Oh, and if it helps.. I am pushing a gmail account with no problem.
Would it be possible for you to make a backup of this so we I try restoring it? It sounds to me like that is what the solution is..
I would post the apk or the TBackup but I am unsure where the email accounts are stored. I don't want to give a bunch of people my email accounts.
I suspect that when they built that rom they based it off a GSM Galaxy S2 and they forgot to switch out the email client. APN is require for a GSM phone to access the network. Check back with the Rom Dev.
Maybe some one can pull the email.apk from the unmolested stock image thats posted in the developers section.

That makes complete sense! I know it's a bit much to ask, but would you be willing to remove your email accounts temporarily and make a separate backup of the email.apk? I can PM you with my work credentials to set up an account with if that would help.
I'd be very appreciative as I need Exchange on my phone for work. I'm on the verge of going back to my Palm Pre until I get this resolved!
I was doing some playing around, sorry but the apk from the back up has the same issue. It's the restoring of the data that fixes it. Even after the data has been restored, I can delete the email accounts and manual recreate them and they work fine.
Darn! had it working, but not sure how...
Hi guys,
I have been battling the "Activation Failed: unable to connect to network" problem on my Epic 4G Touch (SGS2) since last night (after flashing starburst 1.6).
I was excited that I got exchange to work again after formatting system, data, cache, then wiping factory data and dalvik, then reflashing starburst 1.6.
I got some voicemail errors, so i decided to try and re-flash again, and also to see if exchange would still work. After re-flashing the same way, Exchange doesnt work anymore. I repeated again just to be sure and still didnt work.
I guess I dont know how i got the exchange active sync problem to go away the first time. Maybe it was just dumb luck.

I PM'd PhantomHacker and he told me that it is a known issue with this ROM and it will be fixed. I was able to get things working again by flashing [ACS][Base Rom]Stock Rooted Odex & Deodex until the mail application in StarBurst is functional again. I haven't tried it, but you may have luck using the StarBurst Minimal AOSPmod that was released last night since it has the AOSP Email client on it.
ok, got it working again.
Hi again,
OK, I just got it to work again, and it wasn't all the fancy reflashing that fixed it.
I have re-flashed several times to try and fix this problem and I noticed that after reflashing, my security pin is still active from my previous flash. I remembered that i had removed the pin before flashing the first time also.
I went into Settings -> Location and Security -> Change screen lock -> none. Then I was able to setup Exchange active-sync without getting the error.
I hope this works for others!
My voicemail problems I mentioned (error V30) went away by itself after about 30 minutes.

[Q] HTC Evo 4g Cyanogenmod 7 STOPPED receiving MMS

I know starting new threads is a risky thing here, but I feel my situation is peculiar/unique enough to justify the risk.
I've been running CM7 and using ChompSMS (donated) ever since using Android, many devices ago. This is the first time something like this has ever happened. A couple days ago, my phone stopped downloading MMSs. I can send myself a message (text with a subject) and the notification that the message is waiting for me will come in, but it will not download. I called Sprint and got the code to reprovision the phone, so I downloaded a stock rom and punched it in. The stock rom would download messages just fine. Switching back to CM7 (I tried multiple nightly builds, as well as the most recent stable build), the messages stopped coming in again. I googled all over the place and the best solutions I found was to delete "telephony.db" or to try "APN backup & restore," restoring the APN with settings that worked for somebody else. Every time I restored the APN, it would just remove all the entries. I tried to restore defaults (which brought back a "Sprint" one), reboot, no dice.
The only solution I've gotten to thus far was to download Go SMS Pro, which can download the MMS, after the notification has already come in and I go in to hit download manually. Yes, this gets the job done, but it's just a band-aid over the problem. I'm mostly curious just what exactly caused this, why it persists over every CM install (but not the stock rom), and why I can't seem to find any way to fix it.
A quick update to this, in case anybody has been keeping tabs. This problem spans across multiple roms. I've since installed an MIUI ICS rom, more versions of CM7, a very buggy version of CM9 ported, and another gingerbread rom, all of which kept the problem going. The only rom that works is the most recent rooted stock rom I downloaded. I REALLY don't want to go back to stock if I can help it. Any ideas now? Would flashing new radios help this? If so, I have to be S-OFF to do so, correct?
Thanks for all your help, those that do!
been having the save issue with MMS but I use Handcent not chompSMS, it also wont download using the Roms stock SMS app. it seems to happen on any ASOP rom that I've tried. but any sense based roms seem to work fine. goSMSpro also works for me if I manually hit download (thanks cause that's better than nothing). I have tried to flash new radios, along with flashing CM with a formatted mem car. and nothing seems to work. so If you find a resolution please keep this updated. good luck
I've been having the same problem for the past couple weeks with CM7. I've tried everything the Google suggested, changing the APN, turning off auto-retrieve, disabling MMS with Sprint and re-enabling it after a while, etc., nothing worked. I tried a few different roms too. I can't get MMS to work on any rom unless it's sense based.

Doing this won't cause any other issues? I really want to get this to work because I'm having the same issue on a CM7-based rom.

It says in the first post, we tried deleting telephony.db
Some of us have tried flashing multiple fresh roms, which I believe would delete telephony.db
Mms won't work unless it's a sense based rom.

I run into the same issue on Deck's Reloaded occasionally. More often than not, though, MMS works. Have never bothered troubleshooting it since it's hardly ever an issue.

Same problem
I'm having the same problem with CM7 on Evo 4G. I can get it to work with sense based rom and goSMS (thank you for posting that, I was about to bail on CM7 completely). Stock messenger and handcent won't work. I saw on another thread someone said it would work until flashing gapps, but I haven't tried that. I even tried backing up APN from a sense rom that would work, and restoring it to CM7, as well as deleting telephony.db, nothing works.
Yeaaahhh MMS can either go 1 of 2 ways. Either you try to get it to work and it works fine, like I just did on my evo, OR *nothing* you do seems to make it work.
I should know, I spent about 6 months earlier this year (on and off) getting MMS to work on my HTC Hero.
With that said, the first step is to make sure you're putting in the right APN info.
Start with deleting /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony*
Next, make sure you have the correct APN info in /system/etc/apns-conf.xml
You'll probably have to either sysrw in android terminal or "adb remount" on pc/mac/linux/whatever to make changes to that file.
This one should work on ICS/JB:
google sprint apns-conf.xml
Should be the last one, searchco.de
Just change the version to 6 if you want to use it on GB.
Reboot to make the system create a new telephony.db from /system/etc/apns-conf.xml
If that doesn't work, you may need more apn changes, framework-res.apk changes, mms.apk changes, etc. etc.
Currently my phone will only download mms that is 200kb or less with either the stock messaging app or handcent. I'm going to try some of the trouble shooting steps on this thread and see if anything works.
If anyone has a fix they know of that fixes this particular problem please let me know.
Phone: EVO 4G

My girlfriend is having the same problem as everyone else when it comes to MMS. She has my old Evo 4G running CM 7.1. I wiped the cache and dalvik cache, updated the PRL and profile with a sense ROM, but none of this fixed the problem. I can confirm that Go SMS Pro will download picture mail that neither the standard messaging app or Handcent could (they both gave the error "download of message New Message from SENDER was unsuccessful"). Hopefully a fix can be found soon. BTW, thanks for the tip omegastu!

[Q] [VZW] MMS stuck on "sending...", how to resolve?

Hey,
Got this phone of ebay a little while ago and my outgoing MMS worked fine for about a month. The phone has been rooted and seems like it was running a custom ROM. However everything has been fine.
Now when I send a MMS it gets stuck on "sending" and eventually it will say message failed to send.
This is what I've tried:
Deleting the cache for messaging app (stock)
Adding a new Verizon APN
Getting a new sim card
I can receive MMS just fine, doesnt matter if im on 4G/Wifi cant send them out.
I was thinking about trying to flash my radio, or go back to the completely stock phone.
Anyone have any ideas?

I doubt it is a radio. If it was me, I would go back to stock or at least a ROM that you put on there yourself .
I reset to factory and installed my own rom and flashed the radio just to be safe. Everything is working now, thanks for your input!
