[Q] Has anyone used DLNA on the G2?

I have seen the discussion about the Desire Z using DLNA, but no mention of the G2. My TV does not support this feature, but I have been looking into buying a Media Link from HTC when it comes out($145). This will make my TV DLNA. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I have been looking all over and haven't found any info. Plus, I don't want to shell out the cash for an adapter for my TV if my phone dosen't support it. Thanks a million for any help or experience with this.

I haven't used it, but yes, that's the idea of the adapter thingy from HTC. If you don't have DLNA built into your TV, you buy HTC's adapter and plug it into your TV. Since DLNA is built into the Vision, it should then work to talk to your TV via that box.

Just to be clear, the G2 has DLNA? I know they are both Vision devices, but the only word I have heard about it is for the Desire Z. Thanks.

Hmm, that's a good point, I hadn't realised the G2 spec didn't mention DLNA.
Looking at the user manuals, the DZ guide does talk about DLNA, but the G2 doesn't.
They're the same hardware though, so in the worst case you could run a Sense ROM on the G2 to get the DLNA stuff. Or just get an app for your G2 ROM that includes DLNA support. It shouldn't be a big issue.

I would imagine it's the same as the FM receiver. No word of it if you look at G2 specs but yet it works fine with the appropriate rom/kernel.

DLNA is software-based and only requires access to your home network. I haven't used any of the Sense ROMs, but I would imagine it simply uses the WiFi network.

There are android DLNA servers and clients available, and there are command-line driven linux dlna servers and clients available, many of which will work just fine on android.

Now what appears to be true is that the HTC DLNA implementation, and particularly, their DLNA adapter, has some proprietary extensions, or more aptly, EXCLUSIONS, to prevent smooth operation with 3rd party clients and/or servers. The adapter requires some special HTC-only software and won't work with a non-HTC DLNA source, and I suspect that the server software (runs on the phone) is probably rigged to only activate when an HTC DLNA adapter is detected.
Use of GENERIC DLNA software and hardware ensures complete compatibility with other DLNA devices that you have available on your network. Your computer, for example, is a fully capable DLNA client (as long as you have a DLNA client installed on it).

take a look at skifta and twonky... both work without a flaw.. i am currenty streaming music from my g2 to my ps3.. which in turn plays out my tv. =]
so if you have a tv or a dnla device these will work for you and make you happy..
and there both free.. twonky seems to work a lil better.

I use Twonky (search for that app name) as a DLNA server on my old G1 running a Cyanogen rom.
It works great.
Actually, I use the G1 as a makeshift webcam using IP Webcam app, but also run Twonky on it as a bonus. It works great and I've been very happy with it when streaming music to my TV.
Now if TiVo would just wake up and implement a DLNA client instead of insisting on their years-old proprietary media server.....but I digress.

I have heard twonky dosen't play video, is this true? My TV isn't DLNA, can I use my 360? I'm planning ahead for a new setup when I move. Getting a wireless N adapter For my xbox for gaming, but I want to stream music from my phone and play movies/videos from my laptop. That's why I was looking into an adapter.

I want to watch movies on my TV in the bedroom using the HDMI output of the phone and getting the movies wirelessly from my PC?
I already have the NHL adapter and the HDMI cable, so what would be the best solution for getting the movies to the phone?
p.s.
are there any advantages/disdavtanges of downloading the movies on the phone directly VS wirelessly getting them from the PC?

Install allshare on your computer and then use imediashare or similar dlna app to show it on your phone/tv.

theres an app, skifta, which does that.but for that your tv has to be dlna compatible.
Heres my setup. I have dlna server on my mac, TVMOBILI, where all my vids are. I open skifta, select it as source and play it on my dlna certified LG LW5600 TV.
Other options, I am not very familiar with. To play from MHL(HDMI), it mirrors the screen of your phone basically. So yes, technically, you could set up a dlna server on your pc, then use skifta to play it on your phone from pc, and then connect MHL so that the output gets mirrored on the TV. This solution is in case your TV is not DLNA certified.

So, what I said ;-P
Imediashare let's you select which device to show it on (ps3/dlna compatible tv/phone).
It also supports windows mediaplayer, so if you have that set up you don't need allshare.

Yea, imediashare is pretty awesome.

I use TVersity to stream movies from my PC to my tablet, phone, and GTV. Works nicely, but you have to access the movie through the browser, which then opens it in whatever media player you want.

Personally, I'm a pretty big fan of Plex. Although I did already have everything set up on my media server so I suppose I'm a bit biased. Seemingly working fine via MHL to HDMI adapter. :]

i think best solution is skifta:
you only need a Se7en running pc(where you have all yours 'shared' multimedia stuff), your galaxy nexus and a wifi net.
Open skyfta on yous GN, select your pc as 'source' and your nexus as 'player', browse your movie and play it! (i suggest MX video player on Galaxy Nexus)
if your tv it's dnla certified, connect it to your wifi.... then from skyfta on nexus, select as 'player' your tv

Allshare cast using default video player

Hi guys,
Im using the default video player for my vids. There are some videos(Taken on iPhone 4S) which i have stored in my SGS3. They play fine on the device but when i try to stream them to my TV using all share cast i get an error message on my TV(Samsung) saying Codec not available.
Anyone know of all apps I can use to share videos on my TV?

Ive got a samsung UA46D5000 Led smart Tv. Its got a built in wifi so i don't need the all share dongle. I can stream it directly from my SGS3 to the TV.

It’s my understanding that Allshare Cast is not available yet. When it is available there’ll be another option under Settings/Wireless and networks/More settings.
If you want to stream video to your TV then use Settings/Wireless and networks/Nearby devices, this turns the S3 into a DLNA server allowing you to share your media files with your Smart TV.

Hi,
I can stream just fine. The issue is that some formats dont play on the tv. It just says codec not found whereas they play fine on the device itself. Shouldnt it be able to stream any format that can be played on the device?

It depends on the TV, the TV needs to have the appropriate codec to play it. They’ve got better over time and my D7000 plays more or less any format I throw at it. I can only assume that your D5000 doesn’t have the required codec. The only alternative would be to transcode the video into one that is supported by your TV.

First of all streaming videos to your tv via dlna has nothing to do with all share cast, which means your device's screen will be entirely mirrored on your dlna capable tv (not necessarily samsung), using a certified dongle.
Second, the error message you get is due to the fact that your tv does not have the appropriate codec to play your file (the tv's media player is used for the playback). The exact same error message you will get if you try to play the same file with your tv via a usb flash drive or external hdd using the tv's buit in media player.

Thanks for the info. But what is weird is that the videos shot by
s3 are also giving this error. Shouldn't Samsung devices be compatible with each other that way?

The irony is that if Allshare Cast were available now, codec compatibility wouldn’t be a problem, the latest Samsung SmartTV's will just mirror anything the S3 can display without a dongle, and the same with the dongle but the TV only needs an HDMI port, it doesn’t need to be DLNA capable.

It would be a bit much to expect a TV made some years ago to be fully compatible with devices made today. Video compression and new codecs are being developed and improved all the time. Having said that it may be worth checking the Samsung support site to make sure you have the latest firmware for your TV.

I must admit, your post frightened me a bit and the first thing I did was to make a short 1080p movie with my SGSIII and stream it to my Samsung LE32C650 tv. Well now I'm ok, since it worked just fine, so you definitely must check to see if you have the latest firmware for your tv. The easiest way to do that is directly from your tv's menu, under Support - Software Upgrade - By Online. Hope this helps.

Well, I just got prompted to update for the dongle software so why don't you give it a try to see if it works with the smart tv, without the actual dongle. I will order the dongle next week, as it sounds much better than the wired microusb to hdmi adapter.

I tried to send a video I recorded on my S3 to my Samsung UE40D6575 LED Smart-TV. It came up on the tv-screen if I wanted to play the material from I9300, though I was stupid enough to press cancel because my kida wanted to watch television. Now I can't seem to get this to function again. I have deleted the I9300 from the tvs "NO"-list (???), so that shouldn't be a problem.
Does anyone know what I mean, and what can I do about it (if anything)?

Or go to your wifi and press Forget so it forgets the network and then reconnect.

Both the tv and phone have been restarted several times with no luck

Try reseting your TV.

Is there any info about what Samsung consider 'latest SmartTV'?
Will C series be able to accept Allshare Cast?
Currently on my UE46C8000 I have (under Allshare setup menu) options for 'ScreenShare' (where TV auto-recognized and allowed my 'GT-I9300'. But is ScreenShare same as AllshareCast?
Also, is AllshareCast app already available for S3 (but just not working), or it will be available later on? Since I cant find it on phone, nor on any app store.

I haven’t found any official info on which TV’s will be supported. So this is pure speculation but I’m guessing that it will support the same TV’s that Samsung Smart View on Play supports, which still isn’t available for the S3 yet.

- Samsung Smart TV released in 2011: Models greater or equal to LED 7000, PDP 8000

6 way to connect my xperia ZL to a HDTV. Which is best?

I spent my entire day to figure out the best way to connect my xperia ZL to a HDTV. What I want to do on my tv is:
a)Play all my music, tons of Mp3 in my phone.
b) Plays youtube video, sometimes I have friends over and its fun to watch music video or even dance with them (lounchign playlists)
c)Browse the web on the tv.
At first I thought to buy a smart tv, but then after reading all the reviews it is not really worth it. Cause people say that browsing the web with smart tv is a pain, and most of them do not have an hard drive where I can store my music to be played, and the utube app does not have the option to add adblock in order to play a youtube compilation seamlessly when I have a gathering/party. Therefore I decided to buy a standard tv and mirrow/share my phone screen to the TV. The available options are:
1)Connect by cable. Here I need to buy an MHL to HDMI Adapter + an HDMI cable. This seems like a good solution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHa56Dm2j_8 . Wireless mouse and keyboard are an extra, I might just buy a 15 feet long HDMI cable that goes from the TV to my couch and use the phone. Do you have any experience on this? what MHL to HDMI Adapter works for the ZL (the one one the youtube video works for Z not sure for ZL)
2) Connect via the Throw sony feature. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVRV1u6qLWg I need either bluetooth or wifi on the TV, and it only works for 3 applications (walkman, album and video). You cannot throw youtube video. It could be an extra fast option to throw my music to the TV in case I am walking around the house but it would not be the solution for all the three a), b) and c) points I posted above. So this is excluded.
3)Using Chromecast. Seems like a good option. I dont know how fast and responsive it would be but it allows you to share the internet chrome browser and play utube video. But does not allow playing music I guess. And I guess no option to launch ad-free utube playlists since it would use the chromecast app to play video rite?
4)Using a android mini PC.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvozNRIms78. I did not dig into it too much. It has an harddrive where i can copy my music...but im not sure its convenient.
5)using the mirroring screen capability under settings-> display-> screen mirroring.It seems like I need a Miracast wifi gadget to add to my TV, like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgCDlrzqgdM . Cons: in the comments of the video it is said that you cannot connect to the wifi while you are mirroring, only 3G/4G I guess. What do you guys think?
6) Using NFC. Here is a ufficial video, but guys I have no idea what TV i should buy for doing this.
For what I have understood the easiest way is the old way via cable (point (1)). The only thing I am not sure of is: how can I charge my phone if the micro USB outlet is used buy the MHL to HDMI Adapter?? In 1 hour of browsing my phone will die!! could u enlighten me please?
As for wireless options, I like Miracast, but not sure if the fact that I am stuck on browsing with my 3G/4G network might be a problem. What do you guys suggest?

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a digital audio output from this tablet? Stereo is fine - don't need surround sound or anything fancy, although that would be nice too!

Yes, I was surprised that when I plugged my Fiio E17 in it just worked with the standard LG ROM. Recent custom ROMs also now support USB audio.

Great news, but how in practice do I do it? I am hoping to plug the lg into my hifi audio amp via the coax digital input...

You need a USB "on the go" (otg) cable, £1-2 from famous "auction" site.
Then (something I haven't used) you'd need a USB to coax converter - which seem to exist. I just tried a cheap (£11) USB sound card that I have and it happily converted the USB output of gpad into optical or analogue (not coax).
An alternative could be to look at a Bluetooth solution.

As you say it seems like an OTG connector plugged into a sound card would do the trick. But is there a more direct method? E.g. my old laptop has a straight digital output. I am trying to avoid latency apart from anything, as one application would be to use it at the same time as Miracast (my surround sound pre-amp is very good but doesn't have HDMI so my blu-ray player's HDMI goes to a projector, and the sound is handled separately via coax - works surprisingly well). Would like to replicate with the LG.

I've not come across a tablet with direct digital audio out via optical or coax. This is now a different question from how I originally understood it (I assumed just wanting to listen to audio).
Can't you get the audio via Miracast (I'm not getting it ATM but I thought it did when I've tried previously)? I suppose it really depends on what you are trying to play and what to, there are all sorts of possibilities.
I use the Netflix and YouTube apps on tablet to control play on recent Samsung tv / Chromecast dongle (not actually streaming). You can play audio/video via dlna to appropriate players, you can stream to Apple TV with appropriate app. etc..

I thought the LG was Miracast, not Chromecast or can it do both? Either way I would need to get a dongle for HDMI into my projector, and separate sound to the audio processor.
But how would it do DLNA? My Sony blu ray player BDP-S570 does DLNA and that would be a really neat way to do the video as it would handle sound at the same time...

Miracast is the screen mirroring system, Chromecast is Google's dongle for playing some streaming video sources on TV. Matching apps on tablet/phone can control the playback on Chromecast, some recent TVs use the same control protocol (DIAL) so their respective streaming apps can be controlled in the same way

I use the BubbleUPnP app, it discovers media servers and playback devices on you home network and allows you to control play. It also acts as a dlna server itself, so video stored on phone/tablet can be played on dlna player (TV/blu ray/streaming box/other mobile device).
Note that dlna doesn't guarantee playback, the rendering device needs to understand the format of media from the server, the more recent the equipment the greater the chance of success (eg my recent TV plays streamed video better than the two year old bluray player, my 4 year old TV won't even play video via dlna but will music and jpegs).

It really depends exactly what you want to do.
Miracast mirrors the tablet display, so anything you see on the tablet will appear on TV including games (but lag is too much to really be usable for this).
Google's Chromecast dongle doesn't allow you to show any random video, there needs to be a matching Chromecast app. (I've only used Netflix and Youtube). You start the matching app on the tablet, tap an icon and choose where (on which device) to view the video, you can then pause/play rewind etc. using the tablet.

Thanks again. I get the difference between the two, but I just want to make sure that my LG G Pad is compatible with both Miracast and Chromecast dongles. I have to say that these dongles don't get very good reviews on Amazon but I guess Ill have to get one or the other ...

If you don't mind the cable you could use a Slimport adapter to get HDMI out of the USB socket - have never tried it so don't know the pros/cons.

That could well be the way forward - at least it should work! I am surprised there are not people commenting on miracast etc.
