I have seen the discussion about the Desire Z using DLNA, but no mention of the G2. My TV does not support this feature, but I have been looking into buying a Media Link from HTC when it comes out($145). This will make my TV DLNA. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I have been looking all over and haven't found any info. Plus, I don't want to shell out the cash for an adapter for my TV if my phone dosen't support it. Thanks a million for any help or experience with this.
I haven't used it, but yes, that's the idea of the adapter thingy from HTC. If you don't have DLNA built into your TV, you buy HTC's adapter and plug it into your TV. Since DLNA is built into the Vision, it should then work to talk to your TV via that box.
Just to be clear, the G2 has DLNA? I know they are both Vision devices, but the only word I have heard about it is for the Desire Z. Thanks.

bump!
Im curious about this too
Hmm, that's a good point, I hadn't realised the G2 spec didn't mention DLNA.
Looking at the user manuals, the DZ guide does talk about DLNA, but the G2 doesn't.
They're the same hardware though, so in the worst case you could run a Sense ROM on the G2 to get the DLNA stuff. Or just get an app for your G2 ROM that includes DLNA support. It shouldn't be a big issue.
I would imagine it's the same as the FM receiver. No word of it if you look at G2 specs but yet it works fine with the appropriate rom/kernel.
DLNA is software-based and only requires access to your home network. I haven't used any of the Sense ROMs, but I would imagine it simply uses the WiFi network.
It uses your WiFi.
There are android DLNA servers and clients available, and there are command-line driven linux dlna servers and clients available, many of which will work just fine on android.
I do NOT suggest buying a DLNA device from HTC, particularly at that kind of price. You can get something more functional, like a WDTV Live HD (also supports DLNA) for less money. http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=5255820&sku=W10-9304
Now what appears to be true is that the HTC DLNA implementation, and particularly, their DLNA adapter, has some proprietary extensions, or more aptly, EXCLUSIONS, to prevent smooth operation with 3rd party clients and/or servers. The adapter requires some special HTC-only software and won't work with a non-HTC DLNA source, and I suspect that the server software (runs on the phone) is probably rigged to only activate when an HTC DLNA adapter is detected.
Use of GENERIC DLNA software and hardware ensures complete compatibility with other DLNA devices that you have available on your network. Your computer, for example, is a fully capable DLNA client (as long as you have a DLNA client installed on it).
take a look at skifta and twonky... both work without a flaw.. i am currenty streaming music from my g2 to my ps3.. which in turn plays out my tv. =]
so if you have a tv or a dnla device these will work for you and make you happy..
and there both free.. twonky seems to work a lil better.
I use Twonky (search for that app name) as a DLNA server on my old G1 running a Cyanogen rom.
It works great.
Actually, I use the G1 as a makeshift webcam using IP Webcam app, but also run Twonky on it as a bonus. It works great and I've been very happy with it when streaming music to my TV.
Now if TiVo would just wake up and implement a DLNA client instead of insisting on their years-old proprietary media server.....but I digress.
I have heard twonky dosen't play video, is this true? My TV isn't DLNA, can I use my 360? I'm planning ahead for a new setup when I move. Getting a wireless N adapter For my xbox for gaming, but I want to stream music from my phone and play movies/videos from my laptop. That's why I was looking into an adapter.
Thanks for your input, you rock

The G2 and Desire Z are the same..just configured different

I take it neither of the Desire Z or HD have capabilities to connect to a HDTV via a cable... but the Desire HD was shown to have DLNA compatibility.
does anyone know if the Desire Z will have DLNA compatibility out of the box??
Also would it be via Wifi? i.e if i had a HDTV with Wifi and DLNA compatibility - i wouldnt need anythin else?? (or even the ps3...)
i vaguely remember the Touch Pro, or TP2 having TV-Out, i dont exactly like the idea of being strapped to a tv via a cable, but anyone reckon a mod could be made to duplicate screens?
on a final note, there is an app on the market that claims to add DLNA compatibilty to your current android device - couldnt get it to work (didnt really try hard enough tbh)
According to the spec at http://www.htc.com/uk/product/desirez/specification.html (Multimedia section) , yes, the Desire Z has DLNA.
While waiting for my Desire Z to arrive...
I have an AZBox HD satellite received and can install something like ushare or something which basically (so they say) makes it DLNA capable.
EDIT: I've just read that my Qnap TS-219P Turbo NAS also had DLNA, and all my multimedia is stored on it.
How, in few words, would I be able to use this on my phone?
I know NOTHING about DLNA yet
htc's official promotional video says that it has it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtube_gdata_player&v=KUeW6-HTtSU
I'm running the desire HD rom and I have a pre-installed htc app called 'push media'. I lets you share photos, video and music via wifi
I can not find DNLA the specifications to the G2 but "z" has it.
so maybe it's better with a z then a G2
I'm surfing on youtube every day to see the latest news on the G2 and it appears that no one has 4gig memory it the same as the z 2gig
It can be the HTCSense, I want to put it on my G2
I belive there is also an HTC option for connecting it to HDTV with cable if the TV is not DLNA compatible.

You sure about that? How? I don't recall it having a video-out port (but I could be wrong)

I saw it briefly in the official HTC Desire Z marketing video. Looks like a little hub that changes micro-usb/usb cable to HDMI.
I imagine it's similar to this Samsung Micro USB to HDMI cable:
*can't post link but there is one on the market*
From advertising there's no HDMI output on HTC Vision.. and well, in G2 forums there isn't anyone that claims that Vision has got HDMI output.
DLNA is only a WiFi data sharing program, I've tried it on my old Motorola Milestone and it's really, really useless.
However, I've tried it for sharing with my PC as I haven't got a TV that supports DLNA, so maybe I'm wrong when I say that it's useless, but anyway the last hope is getting TVOut from 3.5mm jack as some phones and cameras can output video signal from there (analog, not HDMI).
I'm running mdeejay's desire z 1.3 rom on my hd2. I have a Samsung 46" C670 series TV. I have the TV wired to my router. When I'm on wifi with the phone I can control the TV through the 'Connected Media' app and view pics, vids, and music.

There's a micro usb to HDMI cable sold by Samsung and I believe HTC has a similar option.

There it is! Much appreciated.
here we go - have my Desire Zeee in hands for second day . Regarding dlna:
- watching content from dlna servers (pc, synology disc station) on the phone is there out of the box via "gallery" application where you can choose "connected media" which scans your wifi network and finds compatible sources. Have managed to see photos and play songs, but not video as "format not supported". Anybody know where supported formats can be found?
- watching content on your phone via TV that supports dlna: it not there out of the box, but there are apps that makes phone a "dlna server". Have used "twonky serverver mobile" that seems to be free and do the job, but again: photos and musing from phone on my TV is ok, but not video (at least for me: my TV - Philips...- dlna client does not support 3gp to which Zeee is recording via camera).
I'm guessing most of your videos are downloaded movies in divx or xvid format. The Desire Z does not play these.
The DLNA sharing facility is in the manual so that you can share media off the phone onto a PS3 etc but I haven't got it to work yet...still trying.
I just got it to work with Windows Media Player!!! On the PC, you need to go into Media Player, Stream menu, and tick "Allow remote control of my player". Then go onto phone, All apps, Connected Media, pick Music, then choose your PC name, and it will play on the PC!! And you can control it from the phone!! Awesome. Works with vids and pics too.

You can use the app arcmedia from market to play these.
I've also used the twonky media server app to stream a divx downloaded movie via dlna from the phone to the tv, via a ps3.
Works beautifully.
cool! works for me as well from cell > computer. does it go from computer > cell tho?
I heard the the Samsung epic has dlna or wireless communication with dlna devices to share media (videos pics music) with hdtv's with wireless etc. Is there and app for EVO that will allow us to do the same? I already know there is a hdmi port on the phone, wanna know about wireless.

I believe Sense HD supports it if we ever get the update or a successful port.

[EDIT] DLNA support is in the new Sense HD ports and the roms are running pretty stable now. Havent tested DLNA though.
ShareMe is supposed to work. (DLNA and UPnP)
I was able to get my Evo to show up on the Xbox 360 but it wouldn't connect. This may be because I was also using tethering to connect to the 360 though.
I use ImediaShare... available in the market for I think 5 bucks. works with my stuff: ps3, 2 laptops windows xp/7 and two lg wifi blue rays. it only fc'd on me when I had a corrupt vid in there.
the dev responds to your emails.
it worked before and after i rooted my phone (unrevoked, omj's 2.2 rom).
and after i changed routers (old d-link p.o.s. - netgear wndr37av).
More info about iMediaShare is available at bianor.com/ims/
I am new to Android & would really like to us my A7 to access both online hosted Streaming Video (movies & TV shows) as well as host my DVDs on my internal network.
I had hoped to use Netflix but research on the web indicates that isn't a go on Android without newer, possibly embedded hardward based, DRM solutions. I did see a post about Amazon and RockPlayer but not really much else to go on.
Can people reply and indicate what are the best Streaming Video sites (& client being used to access those sites) for the A7? If you need to use one for movies & one for TV shows please list multiple...
Can people also reply with more insight on how they are hosting & consuming their own DVD collections? Specifically I would like to know:
What did they use to rip their DVDs?
Where do they host them (off a PC? a NAS?, etc)?
What client do they use on the Android A7 to access them?
What protocol (NFS?,CIFS?,SFTP?,etc) does the A7 use to access their DVDs?
For reference I have multiple options available to me at home inclucing RedHat Enterprise Linux & a few other flavors, Win 7, Win XP, and a central NAS device.
tv shows
for tv shows I like (tv shows stream) from the market
Playon seems to work well for me and it will let you stream Netflix and other sites kinda expensive 5amonth or 80 for a lifetime.

When I get back from Spring Break I want to try Playon. I don't like the idea of another subscription but it seems really flexible. It might also allow me to watch Hulu through my bluray player (which stopped supporting it) so that is a big plus... Being able to centralize all of that to a central computer and shoot it to my TV, laptop, and Android A7 would be great.
The Netflix.apk is available as beta for Android. I installed on my A7 and can manage my account, queue and search. When I launch a live stream of instant movies it says can not connect to Netflix servers please try again.
My research is that they won't allow netflix to natively run on Android without some Digital Rights Management (DRM) capabilities (currently too open) built into. Some Android device makers may be releasing some newer models that allow for this and the native netflix should work for them but maybe never for us if it is a hardware based implementation...
That being said, the Netflix over playon seems to be working OK for me as I went ahead and set it up before traveling for Spring Break... Both Netfilx & hulu worked fine on my home LAN and was working OK on my hotel WIFI for a few hours but isn't for some reason right now.
I need to replace my home router so that I can take the current router with me as it turns my 3g/4g USB device into a personal portable WiFi (kinda like a geeky MIFI). Currently that router uses both my DSL & USB cellular data card together at home and I didn't have time to do that before I left and if I took it with me my home would have been down and I wouldn't be able to serve playon from home while traveling...
Tv.com also works well on these devices

Hi,
Having recently got both a One X and a new Blu Ray player (Samsung BD E5500), I've been trying really hard to get DLNA sharing to work from the phone to the Blu Ray, with absolutely no success. They're both connected to the same router, the One X wirelessly, the Samsung wired. Third-party apps like Twonky work no problem, but I can't get the HTC sharing from the Gallery, etc., to work at all - I go to "Select Player", it clearly searches for a while, and then comes up with nothing. Conversely, where the Samsung normally lists all the media servers it can find on the network, there's never a hint that it can see the phone at all (unless, of course, I'm running the Twonky server).
I emailed HTC about this yesterday, and they responded by saying that Google had forced the ICS DLNA app to be restricted to WiFi-Direct connections only, that there was nothing I could do via a router connection, and giving me a handy link to where I could buy the MediaLink HD at great expense. I've been searching and I can't find any other reference to Google doing anything with regard to DLNA & WiFi-Direct. They also insisted that my GF's Incredible S, still being on GB, would work fine over my router's WiFi to talk to the Samsung player. Unsurprisingly (as I had in fact told them in the original email), the Incredible S displays exactly the same symptoms as my One X.
So, my question is, are HTC telling the truth about this? It seems that other people on here have managed to get some kind of DLNA sharing working, if I've read the threads right. Any tips? I could understand *adding* DLNA+WiFi-Direct support (now that that's part of the standard), but taking away the ability to talk to non-WiFi-Direct DLNA players? Doesn't make sense.
Anything else I can say that will add to this, please do just ask!
Hope someone can answer.
Thanks!
Have you turned on DLNA on your blu ray player (or is that automatically enabled)? Your One X has to push media to your blu ray player, not play it.
Automatically enabled. It seems that the Blu Ray player just regularly scans for media providers and shows them in a list on the main menu screen. Certainly, that's how it handles the minidlna server on my OpenWRT router, and how it displays the Twonky server on my One X (when it's running).
I went yo the sprint store to pay my bill and saw this on the way out. It apparently, to the uninitiated, acts like a router but only connects with allshare and HDMI to the TV. A salesman and myself tried playing with it. I'm on calkulin el29 2.8.1. and couldn't connect to the in store model. Upon further investigation, it only works with the note 1&2 and the s3. I couldn't figure out why or what's the difference that those devices have that mine doesn't. Could it be jellybean? I installed fl04 but couldn't make it back to test it out. I'm assuming it's a jb thing. So the other hardware has nfc, big f'in deal. You have to be extremely close for that to work. It can't be that it's on the n band of wifi, can it? Afaik, this phone can go dual band. Does anyone have an explanation or work around for this? I've got a roku and wdtv and Panasonic bluray and my gf has a Sony br. Very few file types actually play on these dlna devices from the phone. I've tried allshare and imediashare and a few others but if one won't play them then none of them will work. I thought there might be such a thing as a device like this one that its only function is being a dlna receiver, but I can't find anything other than this. Apparently HTC makes something similar but it only works on their phones. What the heck?

The media server and display device need to be connected to the same network.
In your example, your phone needs to be connected to the same wireless network as the shop's TV.
Allshare is just Samsung's name for DLNA media sharing. Fun to play with in the home.
FL04
Just fyi, since the update to JB, Samsung has added in some media component to the movie player so you can stream to a samsung smart tv. This feature wasnt available in GB or ICS
You can do this with photos in the gallery app as well...

Okay. Then maybe I should flash back to fl04 and see if it connects. I should download the user manual for it and see if you have to connect the hub to your network or the phone connects directly to the hub. I don't have any other dlna devices besides the phone that could feed the hub. The sales people said that it will only work with Samsung phones and allshare. That's too bad that it isn't your standard dlna hub, but it looks like its software between the phone and hub are made to be proprietary. I hate crap like that. Plus, their asking price of $100 is too much IMO. I'd pay $50 at the most for it. That was the general consensus with reviews of it. It works with only a limited amount of new phones and it's too expensive for what it is.
Dlna, across the board, has one requirement; same network as stated above. Have the shop attach your device to their network and it'll work. It's not proximity like nfc.

hmm
if you have a wirless router in your house, you do not need the allshare media hub as long as you have a samsung smart tv (not sure about other smart tv manufacturers)
When I ran the all share app it browsed my PC then streamed a video from the PC to the phone, then my Sony TV switched inputs by its self and started playing the movie on the tv without wires
You dont even need a smart TV, I play music, videos, slideshows, etc... through my xbox all I do is choose the switch player option
