what do you think i should use?
i dont know which is better, what do you prefer?
how do i switch from clockwork mod recovery to Amon Ra anyways?
The choice essentially boils down to personal preference. Amon-ra arguably has a nicer looking interface (I prefer it at any rate), while Clockwork integrates with Rom Manager. I currently have Amon-ra installed. You can flash Amon-ra from Rom Manager; the menu entry near the bottom should say "flash alternate recovery".
Another feature of Clockwork is that it allows the user to navigate through subdirectories to select the zip file to flash. Not a killer feature for me, but I'm not everyone.
Well that's not what to has at the bottom. It says ra something but the doesn't say amon ra recovery. Is amon ra recovery the alternative recovery? Hm, I have no idea how to do this. Help?
Sent from my HTC EVO
Stick with Amon, I don't think clockwork backs up the Wimax flash partition which is pretty big since people seem to be messing up their wimax radios/settings.
I don't even know how to get an amon ra recovery on my phone.
Sent from my HTC EVO
Ive been using amon_ra since I rooted and it's done me good so far. You can find a link to amon_ra's thread in my sig.
Install rom manager from the market. Then just press the flash alternate recovery. It should install
Amon's recovery. If that option is greyed out, install clockwork first, then the option to install the alternate recovery should be able to be selected.

You surely realize that you are asking a simple question in the Development forum, right?
You do realize there is a forum for questions, right? It's called ....... Evo 4G Q&A.
You do realize you are taking up someone's valuable time and making them MOVE YOUR post to the correct forum, when as a adult (?) you should have been able to do that in the first place, when you created the post.
Please... have some respect for these forums, create your posts in the appropriate forum, it's really not that hard to do.
Oh, wait I take all this back.....Your nym sounded familiar so went back and saw some of your posts to see why it rang a bell.
You're the guy with questions such as
Cm6, what is it?
Does unrevoked forever come with Nandroid?
Does anyone know how to do a nand backup?
Dude, you really should just stop creating any new posts and READ. Every question you've asked, are questions that should have been answered by doing the most basic of reading, BEFORE you even root your phone.

Most Custom Rom recommend Amon Ra, the main reason is because Clockwork Mod is known for not wiping the Davlik Cache properly.... My Personal choice is Amon Ra but I do use Clockwork from time to time...
BTW: Think this is a post for Q & A and not the Development area...
ARMON backs up wimax.ing which contain a copy of the RSA Private Keys, you lose these, no 4G, Clockwork does not.

I don't post alot, but I just don't understand why people can't leave "stupid questions" alone or just not respond to a "valid question" if its in the wrong forum. You may want to be a forum moderator, but you're not. And guess what? 9 times out of 10 (that's a guess) the real moderators will take care of it.
Well, though I think a few people were a bit rude telling you the way they did, they are right in the fact that this belongs in Q&A and not in development. No question is stupid unless is it absurdly obvious, since some prefer one to the other it is a valid question. It just happens to be posted in the wrong area. There are better ways to handle this, obviously what you got was not it.
In any case, I feel Amon RA is the superior of the two. It just works and has everything you need in a recovery. Plus, it has more options to fix problems built in than Clockwork does. Clockwork also has the "not sure if the Dalvik is wiped" issue which Amon RA does not. I used to use Clockwork until I had issues installing some ROMS, I switched to Amon RA and have never looked back. I do like the layout better in Amon RA as well and find it more readable.
Clockwork has two advantages: Able to read ROMS stored in any folder and it is integrated with ROM manager. One of not really a con (better and safer to do that through recovery than a program) and the other is meh, would rather have it on the root of the SD anyhow, ready to go, but that is just me. I think the advantages of Amon put it well ahead of Clockwork.
You can read my post (listed below) "Common misconceptions and other useful information". I am sure it can answer a lot of question you and lots of other people may have. I know a lot of people have told me they have found it useful.
Hope this helps, but please...next time post this in Q&A and save a (real) mod from having to move yet another post. Thanks!
I've said it before, don't know why they can keep people with low post counts from posting links but let any clown with a keyboard start a worthless thread. In the wrong area no less....

First off get off your high horse. There is no reason whatsoever for you to respond like this to anyone. And that goes for everyone else. Why not simply bypass the post and go look for whatever it is you were looking for. So what he put this in the wrong topic. Who was the idiot that open the thread up and wasted about 2-3 mintues coming up with why this should be somewhere else. Here's one for the QA were your parents related cause you seem pretty retarded?

Another thing just answer the damn question next tine. If you aren't why bother posting a reply.
Alright off my soap box I believe amon ra is the better choice. Because of the full wiping and overall better interface. Though rom manager works with clockwork. At least you can flash the other rcovery through that.

While this is an overall good community, you will get a lot of people who feel they need to police these forums (makes them feel good about themselves) and you always have want to be mods when it comes to forums.
The point is that there is ways to handle things and there is ways not to. I think it is obvious how NOT to handle things, that is why you should let the mods do their job and leave the rest up to us! If the mods handled things like this, there would be hardly anyone around!
It is funny, these same angry people can take the time to rant at the person yet cannot answer the question.
Hey guys, so I have a quick question. I'm new to this android things. I know I should read more, but as the threads are just overloading..i find it hard sometimes to find the answers to everything.
Can anyone tell me how to backup ROMs, like I wanted to try the evil's rom but i currently have the baconbits. So I want to backup this ROM just incase i dont like the other evil's rom or any kind of ROMs. And perhaps, how to flash my old ROM back into my phone, when i decide i dont like a particular ROM.
Also, what is NAND? why is everyone deleting these?
Any help would be appreciated guys. Thank you in advance.
I'm pretty new to all of this as well. If you install rom manager there is an option to backup current rom. As for the NAND I'm not 100% sure (correct me if I'm wrong anyone that knows) its a security feature that will not allow you to write anything permanently to the phone.
Your post kinda brushes on my question... What do you mean people are deleting the nand? I have been wondering about getting the full 4GB internal space but haven't seen any mention of it since Perm Root became available.
There's a thread in the development forum; can't remember the full name but it's got [RECOVERY] and Clockwork in the name. Follow the instructions in there and that will allow you to back up and flash ROMs. Any questions you may have are probably answered there but feel free to ask in that thread if you run into problems.
NAND is the internal storage of the phone. I'm not sure what you mean by people "deleting" it, because that hasn't been any intention. There is a sort of block on it that prevents us from accessing all 4GB of the storage; that's where the complaints of only seeing 1.1x GB of available storage are stemming from. The developers will probably eventually find a way to remove those partitions and allow full access; maybe that's what you're referring to?

It's only been a day since root; just like we gave the devs time for that, we'll give them time for the NAND. There hasn't been any progress, I believe. Fortunately, 1+GB is still a crapton

Ya thats what I was wondering about. I'm not too too worried about it because I don't have much on the internal, but would be nice. I hate that they advertised 4GB when buying the phone, yet thats ridiculously hard to actually unlock...
I would also like to know about this nandroid backup. I've seen people backing roms with rom manager but then when they try to revert to the backup they can't because they didn't make a nandroid backup.
What is the difference and how do I know if I'm making a nandroid backup or a just plain backup. Is there any other way to make a backup besides rom manager?
I also have seen the name "Amon Ra" being tossed around in the forums. What is this aside from a rom manager like app? I see people wanting the Amon Ra over rom manager. I personally have had no luck backing up my rom with rom manager. Where can we track the progress of Amon Ra? Thanks.
Amon Ra is the moniker for a gentleman named Bart. Clockwork and Amon Ra are recoveries. They have diff. flavors but are basic recoveries. Clockwork is most popular with cyanogenmod. Clockwork is made by Koushik Dutta.
Both are excellent recoveries and if you feel your recovery is broken simply keep flashing it until you only wait five seconds or so forth when u use rom manager to flash. If it takes a while the first time keep flashing until the time to flash is reduced to a few moments. This reinforces the recovery.

Hi All,
2 quick questions. thanks in advance for any help
1) let's say i wanted to upgrade to a bigger sd card for more storage, could i just copy over everything to the new sd card and reboot the phone and all is well and good, even with android 2.2's built in apps2sd? or would any of my apps that are installed to sd get messed up?
2) i haven't yet rooted my g2 but i'm going to soon. i rooted my g1 in the past. i've been reading some of the guides and whatnot to get ready, but one thing i was concerned about is being able to un-root completely to stock in case i ever need to do a warranty thing. do i actually have to back up anything, or can i just download the stock image like alot of tutorials seem to say? will it all be exactly the same after going thru the process of unrooting?
thanks!
Dave
I have the same question with the SD card.
As far as the second question goes I don't think you have to worry about it to much. Most t mobile staff are not anal about it. Just don't have it booting up to cm lol

First of all, do you have a MyTouch 3g or a MyTouch slide? Your post was disturbingly unspecific.
Secondly, the MyTouch 3G, Magic Android Development section is for baking recipes... wait no... it's for quilting patterns... nope that's not it either... OH YEAH! Development! So if your question isn't Development related... it would better to post in General (Q&A).
So just let me know what kind of device you have and I'll move this to the most appropriate forum.
After looking at your previous posts I've pretty much concluded that this is intended for MyTouch Slide. I'll move it to the right Q&A thread of that forum but please note this for future reference:
Using instructions, scripts, hacks, drivers, mods, roms, kernels, radios, bootloaders, etc that are not intended for your specific device is extrememly dangerous and may brick your device! Please make sure that when navigating through the forums that you make sure you verifiy that you are reading in the correct fora intended for your device. Check the top of the page and make certain. This is just as important as reading the instructions.
Help: Is it possible to flash android OS without use of an SD Card? SD slot isnt working in my kaiser due to flex problem..reading through the help guide..seems impossible to proceed with the NAND due to use of SD card..thanks
I haven't seen anyone do that yet, but I'm sure something could be worked out. The problem is if you were to get "androidinstall.tar" directly on the NAND, there would be almost no room left for the install to take place.
not possible yet,

It's nice that you are trying to be helpful but please at least READ the message before making a post. The op indicated he could not do a normal install because his SD slot is broken therefore pointing him to the tutorial that requires using a sd slot makes no sense.
You can't do it, i already answer to this question in another thread!
Search button is your friend.
Thanks for the replies and for the one who defended..am no starter for flashing roms though..and i know how to search..was just asking if its possible..felt sorry for my poor old kaisier..
