[Q] Every AOSP rom MMS issue. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good evening.
I've tried almost every AOSP based rom for Desire (mostly based on CM)... and I experience small annoyance with all of then. I'll try to be as clear as possible..:
Here in Portugal we don't have cheap mobile data plans.. for example 500MB/month cost around 15€. But most of us have free MMS inside our own network, so ideal situation is to have mobile data 90% of the time off, but MMS always working.
In Sense based roms, if you turn off data (power button -> "mobile network"), I keep on receiving MMS but my data is off, I only enable it when I need to save our precious MB .
In AOSP based roms, if the data is turned off, MMS don't work. When sending/receiving I get the "service not available at the moment" error or something similar to this. If I leave mobile data on but "turn it off" with APN name change, MMS work for like 10 minutes but then I'm unable to send/receive without any error at all. I've tried some other widgets to turn mobile data off but leave MMS on.. unfortunately the effect is almost the same.
Does anyone experience the same problem as me?
Thanks in advance.
P.S. I've searched a LOT and found no solution.. only couple of people with the same problem.

No internet available via Mobile Network ?

Hey Y'all
I spent all day trying to figure out why I have lost my internet on my Desire.
I can browse using my wireless, but if I turn off WIFI, all I get is Webpage not available. (On any page I try)
I have been into the APNs to check the settings & they are all ok.
I am with Orange Uk & have an unlimited Internet package.
The little 3g arrows are flashing?
Also I have 70 meg Phone memory & I get a warning if try to intall a 1meg game, saying "Out of Space Program could not be viewed. Free up some space on your phone and try again".
Any help from the experts would be really appreciated.
Thanks
E
I had the same problem with the interent, turned the phone off then on, and internet started working again.
Ok further update.
My emails are working?
I just rang orange & they sent me the settings via text & told me to shut of my phone & remove the battery, then boot it up, & as expected, that did NOTHING!
So I have no idea why I can only browse using WIFI.
Mobile is enabled, I'm not in aeroplane mode, or anything daft like that.

What values do you get if you go:
settings/about phone/network
look at signal strength. might give you a clue.
i'm on orange uk and my desire can be tempremental. it's loads better outside of central london. perfect on wifi. if i'm in a pub in town trying to read the news, or on the bus home, sometimes i get next signal at all.
what i try, and this seems to work sometimes, is turning mobile on/off a few times, or even powering down/up.
ps. it's confusing when you make a statement and then put a question mark at the end (your emails are working? what does that mean - are you asking us, or telling us you're not sure, or what?)
I mentioned this in a different thread...
Do you switch off wifi correctly?
I found that when I am connected via wifi and then go out of range my mobile network can't connect to the internet.
I have to turn of wifi manually every time in order to have the mobile network working.
Usually switching to airplane mode and than back again solves this issue.
The important thing is to always switch from wifi to mobile network manually. It's quite annoying but it's not the end of the world.
Thanks for your replies.
I rang Orange again today, usual call centre.
It turned out in the end that I had lost my WAP settings.
The call centre talked me through setting up the WAP APN settings & the Internet came back.
Don't know how I lost them in the first place?

[Q] Cant Use SMS with Wifi Calling?

Ive recently had a problem with my wifi calling in that I am able to make calls just fine but am unable to send text messages. The message just constantly says sending but never goes through until i turn off the wifi calling. Is the wifi calling only meant for calls and prevents messages from being sent? I can't imagine that it doesnt support SMS but maybe I'm wrong. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
Weird, works fine for me and I'm on the juggernaut ROM.

I've had this problem with MMS, not SMS. Particularly MMS' with file attachments. (SMS is much slower to send, return receipts take forever, etc, but I don't know if that's just a coincidence or a network thing.)
But yeah, when trying to send MMS pictures (for example) the status will just say "sending" and sometimes even error/time out ("network unavailable") until I switch off Wifi Calling. I suspect it has something to do with the way Wifi Calling uses "Airplane Mode" to turn off the cellular antenna.* Why that would affect MMS and not SMS is beyond me, though.
Anyway, I've experienced the MMS problem on stock (KL1) as well as Juggernaut (4.1) so it's not a ROM issue, AFAICT. I don't use MMS all that much so it's not a big issue for me, but (as you said) if Wifi calling and MMS can't be used at the same time, seems like that's a pretty big oversight on T-Mobile/Samsung's part.
*Hold the power button and check out the menu that appears -- when WiFi calling is on, the power menu will show "Airplane Mode" is enabled. But if you go into the settings menu and DISABLE WiFi Calling, ENABLE Airplane mode, and ENABLE WiFi... and then try to re-enable WiFi Calling again, you get an error message complaining that you can't use wifi calling while in airplane mode. Weird stuff.

WiFi calling and MMS work perfectly with Zombie ROM. The only caveat is NOT using stock message app.(Stock works, but will compress JPGs to 28Kb on average. Handcent compresses to multiple 100's KBs dependiong on original file. Specifically, use Handent and 100% guarantee you it works. By definition, when enabling Airplane mode that disconnects ALL wireless connections. Cell tower and WiFi. I do not get any of the behavior you state regarding using the power button method to enable/disable airplane mode or using the menu settings method. It is a combination of how TMobile is handling 2.3.6 WiFi calling AND specifically how a given ROM works with this newer wifi calling under Android 2.3.6

Arc s pxts trouble

Arc s LT18i
ICS 4.04 - 4.1.B.0.431
Rooted
ArcKnight Kernel
Hey guys, I'm on 2Degrees(which goes through Vodafone i think) in New Zealand, and I'm not on a data plan, just prepay.
I can't seem to send pxt's unless I enable 'data roaming' and 'mobile networks', which if I'm correct uses data and eats my prepay time.
I just get a 'Could not send. Message will be sent when service becomes available' error
My mate has the exact same setup with his sensation, and can send/receive pxt's without enabling any mobile networks or data roaming, when he sends or receive a pxt, his '3g' symbol pops up and the pxt sends.
So my question is, is there something I need to do to be able to send and receive pxt's without having to use mobile data and eating into my prepay money, because I know this is possible, just not sure why it's not working on this phone.
I've attached some pics of my apn settings, from what I can tell they are all correct...
Thanks for your help!

Did some research on Google...
PXT requires MMS to be used, MMS requires 3G internet in order to send the stuff. All the photos/audio files and stuff can only be sent over Internet. There is no other way.
You need to have MMS settings in your phone. Data roaming is not required at all. MMS downloading will not eat your money for data, as MMS settings are used for it. MMS settings don't allow you to surf on the internet, these settings are only for sending and receiving MMS.

That makes sense to a degree,
So i need internet access to be able to send MMS?, which means I need to enable mobile networks and data roaming(since I'm not on a data plan I have to enable these or I can't get internet access, therefore no MMS).
But what your saying is even though I enable internet access, the MMS side of it doesn't actually eat into the data, since it's sent a different way, visa vie, it doesn't eat my pre paid moneys...
I just wonder if there is a way to only get data turned on when it's needed for MMS, other wise all my apps are constantly updating and eating my credit...

MMS will use the data itself when it is needed. Mobile networks doesn't have to be turned on, it is only needed if you want to surf on the internet.. Data Roaming is only used if you want to use your phone's internet in another country(which is f**king expensive).
I received an MMS on my Arc S once, I didn't have internet settings on my phone, just MMS settings(APN stuff). I got an SMS, then used the download option. Data was turned on automatically, MMS was downloaded and data was turned off again. No charges for me.

Thanks
That all makes total sense, my only problem is, I can't send or receive pxts unless i enable both mobile networks and data roaming, I've literally tested it in all ways i can, and it wont work unless they are both enabled.

[Q] [SOLVED] Intermittent Mobile Connectivity

This is a repost of a post made in the wrong forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41965120#post41965120
---
Hi all
A search of the forums revealed 5 potential threads similar to this but not quite (not same symptom, phone, modem ...)
Keep loosing mobile data connection...
I have installed X-note 3 and found that my mobile internet is intermittent particularly in Youtube where I frequently have to click "No connection , Retry" or "Connection to Server lost, Retry" and in Play Store and Gmail where the problem tends to occur on a screen unlock after it has been unused for a few minutes - about 3 to 5 mins.
I dont believe this is a ROM issue because I d/l various ROMS such as Revolution, Alliance, PacMan, Paranoid and still I get the problem.
I tried installing all 9 of these radios here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2044937 to no avail.
Also notice that if I set Network Mode to "GSM only" then this makes no difference to the problem (the default is "GSM/WCDMA Auto" which is what I've set it back to)
WiFi works fine.
Any ideas?
same issue here.
a lot of time trying to know why this happen. and i think it is due to fast dormancy.
the phone usually stays in standby in 3g... when you request some data it will automatically turn h or h+. Here is when you will notice the internet moving.
But unfortunately if you have some.coverage issues you can have this problem and then the programs instantly report no conection. If you insist you will see you can obtain connection. 5 seconds later 3g will appear again
It does not mind you will see the bars of coverage at maximum... if there is no quality signal you will have this problem.
I just have this problem at work. Not in other places.
But if you want a constant connection I recommend to keep for example online music while navigating...this will avoid the issue...unfortunately you will increase your data plan..
Yes!! This is exactly what happens.
So it can't be my specific phone but perhaps a hardware design or software issue. I don't recall this I happening before I rooted
Weird
Fixed it - so far at least
Fast Dormancy is the problem. It was enabled by default and I have turned this off. The connection is now fine and seems to be "always on". For me this is okay because I do not have any data limits or pay per MB for data. I do notice that new connections take a little longer to start (for example, time taken to access internet when opening up an app that is not currently running) . This is not noticeable for apps already running (in the background)
This explains ....

MMS cuts mobile data

Hi,
I have an S9 which I have flushed with LineageOS, currently on build 15.1-20190414. Every time I send or receive an MMS message my mobile data connection cuts off. I can make phone calls but not use any app requiring a data connection.
Things I have tried, without luck
1. updating to the latest build (available at the time)
2. work with my provider's (Optus) support to edit APNs, reset APNs, reset all connection settings
The only thing that did temporarily work for a couple of hours was replacing the SIM. But if quickly reverted to its misbheaviour.
I can't think how this would be a HW/device issue, but who knows?
Any help will be appreciated.
TIA
