Why the Windows Phone 7 Start Page Has Blank Spots
Talks about one of the most debated things about wp7 design...the big black space to the right on the homescreen.
Interesting read
BS, its a simple design. Highly doubt scientist got involved, and highly doubt they were thinking about famous artist.

BS? You don't think someone with knowledge of Design stepped in to design Metro? They're not saying they drew from Da Vinci, they're saying it's based on Design Principles, which have been around since the Renaissance and proven over time.
The design principles he talked about:
Rule of Thirds
Golden Ratio Scroll down to where it describes the impact on Architecture, Painting, Book design, Perceptual studies, Music
Basically saying the Metro design comes from design principles. We're used to alot of symmetry, but symmetry is a bad way to make something stand out. Which is pretty much common sense if you think about it. I agree, that a majoir theme of the UI is simplicity, but when I look at Metro I see a company that did alot of homework and did a lot of work to achieve that balance between elegance and simplicity.
Also you can't just say the design of Metro comes from simplicity. The easiest thing would have been to make the tiles symmetrical. the fact that it's not shows that other thought processes went on.
They're not talking about Metro, they're talking about "Start".
Why make it sound complicated? They needed a way for people to know that there is more information to the right, that's all. Its not rocket science.

Why do they need that? There's no such mechanic on any other mobile OS and there is often times when there is more content to the left or right. But it was part of a greater design decision to indicate more content through the design.
If you think it follows Design Principles by happenstance that's your prerogative. But I'll go with a designer designed it that way.

Listen to Albert Shum and the other WP7 designers talk and you'll realize that a lot of thought was put into every tiny detail. Good design is like this and it's why techies/engineers suck at design.
Acually I wouldn't be surprised if some visual specialists were involved in such a process of creating new UI.
And to be honest, some of you don't have a clue how hard it is to find a real good visual proportions on screen, yes it is almost rocket science. From this aspect WP7 is probably well done.
Bull****!
Everyone at Microsoft are drunk and they still havent noticed its out of centre.
You guys are so right, I don't know how I didn't notice it before! It probably took them years and designers from all around the world just to push the tiles to the left! OMG, its brilliant!
People don't know there is more to the right so its beyond me as to how they came up with the idea to put the arrow up there. Probably took more history books, scientist, and designers from all around the world ages to come up with this! Freaking Awesome!

Yeah, right, this is why most of the interfaces around look like ****. Because making good one is too easy.

You think this was their first and only design? Somebody just said "let's put an arrow on the right to get to a list of apps" and this is what immediate was drawn up? Come on, you're being ridiculous.
It probably didn't take them all that much but this has been a point of contention among folks and this helps to explain why it actually makes sense and works quite well from a design perspective. The whole UI isn't just some designer's whim. There has been a lot of effort put into every aspect so that it works together. They even made a little book about it.

The golden ratio, the rule of thirds, and all these have been around for more than a millennia. The research and and statistics have been record decades ago about how people perceive art that follow these rules and guidelines. There is a general consensus that art that uses these rules is more appealing to the eye than the same thing without these rules.
Something like this is really huge because there's so much math involved in it and that its almost ubiquitous in nature, from plant life to the structure of DNA. However, its very simple to use and implement it.
All microsoft and other artists do is just play by these rules that have all ready been established. So all these numbers and "fluff" that the article presents can just as easily be applied to everything else.

Right but the article is accurate. You're making it seem as if the whole thing was done purely just so they could stick an arrow there and the sizing and layout was just what first came to someone's head without much thought. They likely had dozens of mockups with the final choice being tweaked many, many times before becoming what we see today.

I figure joining a graphic design class at an university would make your brain explode with all "fluff" and "bull****" they teach there.
Ugh no. It would enlighten you as to why you do certain graphical things and the principles behind them.

So you're saying they didn't take design principles into account when creating those mockups and deciding on which direction to go? You're not making any sense... What's your point? What exactly are you disagreeing with?
They just stuck with the UI. Made it flow. Pushed it to the left because it looks better and because there is more information to the right. They followed the KISS rule.
The article just made MS design sound so scientific, when in reality everything we do is scientific.
However it doesn't mean MS went into great lengths searching for perfect measurements just to push things to the left.
We can say the exact same thing for any other OS. I call BS and fluff, just let the damn designer's do their job.
Basically ive been watching videos and previews and all that stuff and I thought this looks boring its just an iphone rip off, I liked windows mobile 6.5.x and stuff because of the high customization and Sense/Manila, Windows phone 7 is so clinical and boring and whats with hat programs menu that doesn't look good its boring list WOW to be honest id rather have my TyTN II back maybe the games will be good... SO! you'll have to have a good job too afford them.. im sorry Microsoft had a very different and exclusive mobile OS to be honest I think theyve ruined it.... Rant over and Android here I come.
Thanks for your opinion, further changes will take this into consideration

For the record, the Metro GUI has NOTHING similar to the iOS GUI except maybe the software keyboard.
The entire user experience is fundamentally different from anything out there. The panoramic experience is brand new and fresh... there are no analog effects at play. The GUI is 100% digital in inspiration and implementation... no faux glass effects or stupid animations unless app developers decide to implement them.
If you can look at a video of it running and not see a difference from say Android or iOS, you're delusional and are probably better off with a piece of homogenized Apple garbage.
God, I hate people like you that talk without thinking.
actually I see what he's saying. I believe the UI cannot be customized much like how iPhone can't really be customized, and even with the apps that you can make for windows phone 7 you have to use the same kind of UI unless you are developing a game (as far as we've seen) I think the problem stems from the fact that Microsoft has mad a lot of radical changes that make it more like a iPhone clone than an upgrade to the windows mobile that we all know and love. Windows mobile originally looked to be on par with the way Android worked. Now it looks like they are going after iPhone but an iPhone of 3 years ago than the iPhone now.

Ok shut up, I meant its turning into the iPhone ui I.E. black background with random icons I meant to say the homepage no need to cry about it. From my mothers Basement??? Hmm I hate my mum and am not living with her + I am 16 you cant expect more from me I left school 11 weeks ago and am attending a 9-5 course I have also just passed a lifeguard course... Oh and I don't have a basement so... ummm, fail, you idiot, I also said "is it me" A question so you should have told me I was wrong not? Plus it was my opinion I wanted other opinions not a load of Sh*t from idiots. Oh and I said "like" I can see a difference otherwise I wouldnt be saying time to go to Android or I prefer WM 6.5.. well done hard man...
God, I hate Fan boy idiots like you who talk a load of ****.
Hmm why not try saying no it is not like the iPhone os and explain it no need to have a go at people for having different opinions and/or being wrong and as you say some of it is different to the iPhone ios crap but it is becoming very similar in certain ways. If I get banned for what I just said then oh well, wouldnt of said it if I didnt receive rude responses.
xcom923 thank you for being polite. Thats exactly what I meant by turning into iOS its just not really customizable ok people will jailbreak it but a background wont really look good, you cant see it theres boxes in the way. Thanks xcom =)

Calm down, or leave. Soon enough the mods will see this and sort it out if it carries on.
There is no need for that sort of attitude at all.
Im not having a go, just chill out
Iridox, he was just voicing his opinion, I sort of think your reply was a bit on the hard side.
I agree with what your saying, fundamentally. I can not stand the look of WP7. I wouldn't say it looks like Ios, but I agree its going in that direction, i.e. closed.
I, forone will not be buying a phone running it.
Can we PLEASE not turn this into a flaming thread.
There is enough of them.
Wp7 basically looks great.
Seriously, does anyone think Window Phone 7 looks good? It looks crap
While under the hood WM7 might be really cool and flashy (or flashless imho) I'm no fan of the light blue squares on the home screen, yes they are functional but I think for all the bling behind the scenes they could have been a little more on the creative side, heck even circles would have been a step above the blue square.

This is just my humble opinion and no animals, phones, young people, llamas, or anthing organic in nature was harmed or otherwise flamed during it's writing. ;-)

It annoys me when I get an answer like that I asked about it I did not say it was anything just said it "seems like", he could have corrected me instead of saying he hates people like me, lol I know this sounds like a retarded excuse but im not happy at the mo just split up with my gf and stuff so acting a bit funny at the mo... Not my words, but a good point:
"Why doesn't WP7 have a beautiful enertia/page scrolling like the iPhone. Why does clicking or touching on a 'tile' makes the other tiles slowly fades away one by one instead of having a different navigation metaphor...this is such a bad navigation design and is even bad for the eyes over time... MS should take care of the core fundamentals.... a very fast, snappy and responsive UI with efficient scrolling. In all the demos, the tile or icon doesn't respond to touch in a consistent manner and have to be touch 'multiple' times before it works... If you can't demostrate the you perform the core well, why should anyone care? You can call anyone an MS Hater all you want, but at the end of the day, the writer has a point and those flaws are very obvious, and all you know that.
At the end of the day, what makes Apple iPhone a hit has to do more with a pleasing and beautiful UI (icons, ects)... than xbox, sharepoint,.. those square Hubs are so ugly... and MS idea about theming is giving the hubs different colors?"

I could be wrong, but it should have enertial scrolling. One thing I like about the scrolling is the 'rubber banding'. If you scroll too far the text area compressed and then snaps back when you release. At least my zuneHD does and from every account people are suprised by how snappy the UI is.
With the UI as a whole it seems to be hit or miss. Those open to change seem to love it but those who want more of the same seem repulsed.
For me, I'm looking for something different and I like it. If you want icons on a grid then go for Android or iOS, simple as that.
So you prefer tiles on a grid?

Wow, that was a quick reply. The tiles aren't static. They are a cross between widgets and icons.
The UI tries something different and I at least find it refreshing.

Im not sure what videos that person was watching, but of all the video's i've seen (ENGADGET REVIEW VIDEO INCLUDED) every reviewer has said how snappy and fast it was. The videos made that apparent as well.
So my opinion greatly differs in that aspect.
Until i have a phone in my hand i wont know for sure how much i really like or dislike it.
One thing i've noticed that is a flaw in my opinion is the ability to quick switch between "Hubs" or apps. You have to go all the way to the home screen and THEN open an app. You are unable to somehow quickly switch.
I assume a lot of these issues will be fixed within the first 6 months after release.
No it's not just you.
I am fully aware that the WP7 updates thusfar have been quite terrible but it now seems that there are more people posting here purely for the sake of bashing WP7 than ever. Of course when it is addressed most of them say "I run it on my blahblah and it's nice but I just wish it could be better." Why not mention some of those nice points. The phone may not have a billion different settings to change and all the different options other OSes have but what it does do it does better than any other OS out there and I'll take quality over quantity any day. The only complaint I've had thusfar about WP7 and the only thing I dislike about it is the update system, but I can look past it as after switching to WP7 every other OS just feels lesser. WP7 has some flaws but the majority, aside from multi-tasking, are heavily exaggerated. I know some people want to stream pandora and text and I'm sure that sucks but we all knew that was there when we got the device and Microsoft is addressing the issue. I just want to know, why spend most of your time lounging around a forum for something you so greatly dislike? I mean, I don't visit the android forums and post hate messages there. Are some people just that wanton to hate?
1. the vocal and critical few on the internet do not represent the numbers out in the real world.
2. it's human nature to stay silent when all is good, but raise hell when it's not.
Michael.
Like Mike above me said, the trolls are out there to do exactly what you're witnessing on these forums.
And no one attracts more trolls than Microsoft.

Apart from rabid Android fanboys who are very vocal all over the internet and generally are overyelling Apple fanboys by a big margin, this particular forum also has many ex-WM users who are frustrated because WP7 isn't WM7. So you see lots of negativity here.

well a lot of the people "hating" are WP7 owners, so your argument goes out the window, what do they have to gain by sharing their experience and warning others not to make the same mistake and jump on a beta OS a year out of a real update?
The arguments for and against WP7 are equally valid, take a look at the bugs thread for what problems people have. That's cool that you like your device but some people looking for a new device want multitasking, want to change the UI, want folders, want mounted storage, they want free apps that don't suck, some even want tethering, some want a front facing camera, some want to save camera settings, others might want that stupid camera shutter turned off, some might even want to load their own ringtones (what a concept), others might want to be able to back up their apps and data on a hard-reset, the list never ends.
The reason it seems people are here to rain on your parade is because there are so many posts about "WP7 is so awesome, better than any other OS" and that crazy ass thread about let's all love and worship MS, what the hell was that? Then there's the "I don't care if my phone can't do anything, it's sleek and fast and works as a phone" posts.
I know I seem like a buzz-kill troll, but the truth is I actually LIKE wp7 a lot, it's just you have to admit it's a work-in-progress that is missing so many things that Android and iOS have to offer, I could never in good conscience tell someone to get a WP7 over an iPhone or Android, but that's the way it goes with a brand new OS.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I actually wouldn't have bothered to say it myself. But since you said, I'll back it up. WP7 owner here, and my posting history is full of positive sayings about WP7. But, since I'm not a fanboy or loyalist and am rational minded, my posting history is also full of negative things about WP7.
I would rather read from a poster who isn't afraid to tell the truth of the matter; who won't cow down to the fanboys or loyalist...who just adore causing all kinds of trouble and having innocent people labeled negative things. In a situation like that, when they expect me to back off, I charge full steam ahead and ram right through all of the bull****. That's my nature.
Just to clarify, my point isn't that everyone who criticizes WP7 is an Android fanboy, I never said that. There are a lot of fanboys though, and there's a lot of frustration and even anger among ex-WM users, and this adds a lot of negativity. I myself am an ex-WM user, cooked my own ROMs and even developed a utility for WM once.

I readily admit that it's a work in progress but so is any other OS. I know that some of the things on WP7 are more prominent (aside from android's UI... yeesh) but it's no reason for a lot of people to write it off as a whole. As for the points you said it needed;
multitasking- Coming in Mango, only time I've found it to be a burden was before my zune pass when I streamed slacker.
want to change the UI- I change the colors on mine nearly daily. iPhone is not supposed to have much alteration on it's UI either
want folders- Hubs seems more sensible in my opinion and the apps in the long list are so much easier to find because I can flick my thumb once and catch the app by alphabetical order without it being 4x4.
want mounted storage-Likely not happening and truthfully I don't want it to because that would enable a lot of hacking capability and I personally don't want to see apps easily pirated like they are on android and iphone.
they want free apps that don't suck- I think the free apps on here beat the hell out of free apps on most mobile OSes. iPhones free apps are pretty limited. I guess if you are comparing to android though there's no real point in making people pay for apps because you can get any app you want for free. The only way to go on there is ad supported.
some even want tethering- I never personally got the point in this especially since most cellphone providers now have data caps.
some want a front facing camera- This would be nice, I know Microsoft demoed a video chat app at one convention or another way back in like January.
some want to save camera settings-Eh, I would like it but I see why they went the way they did. If I have my camera set for fluorescent light then I go home and my son decides to walk for the first time I don't want to pull out the camera, adjust the settings, go back, and then take pictures likely missing the moment.
others might want that stupid camera shutter turned off- Never really occurred to me...
some might even want to load their own ringtones (what a concept)-Meh, it appeals to some but in all actuality that kind of stuff just feels sort of juvenile.
others might want to be able to back up their apps and data on a hard-reset- I know, from what I heard this was supposed to come alongside NoDo but I'm not seeing anything thusfar.

Hating BK doesn't make you a McD Fanboy, unless.... you go to a BK, run up and down the aisles calling all those eating Whoppers losers because Whoppers aren't as cool as the Big Mac because the Big Mac's got three buns. Any possible discussion of the relative merits of both burgers and establishments are then typically deflected to another specious argument about how the Ronald is cool and the King is creepy. Why are you even in a BK if you hate them so much? Anytime someone feverishly professes a dislike for one platform/every other platform because it’s not a cool as the one they have, they are Fanboys. Otherwise, why invest so much energy putting BK down. Just eat your Big Mac and move on.

you're right, and no one here is really doing that, just pointing out some missing features and frustrations.
If McD didn't have buns on their burgers and this was a burger forum, I'd point out that you may want some BK because they have buns, that's all.

I got the wrong impression then, my post was more towards the boy who cried fanboy all the time. I too am from WM and cooked my own ROMs back in the Diamond days, then HD2, and I can see your point about how this would add some negativity when you come from such a platform as that to the closed off can't-change-**** attitude of WP7
Human Nature
I go all the way back to MS-Dos and PC-Dos and have been an MS user that entire time. It has been a love/hate relationship at times, well, maybe hate is too strong a word. Frustration might be better. Most people have been with MS at some time in their lives and probably have been frustrated from time to time. This update fiasco falls into the category of "I want this to succeed but, damn, it's the same old MS shooting themselves in the foot and working like hell to make sure this fails". We are just frustrated is all. Their success in keeping us as customers for so long just assures that we have all experienced some sort of frustration.
The sad thing about this whole update fiasco is that someone at MS actually DESIGNED this process, believed it was a good idea, committed it to a contract with carriers, and then signed off on it, to provide users with this wonderful, world class experience. It provides us with another example of the caliber of people who manage these companies. And I like MS!!!!! They just need to get out of their own way.
It's not so much an update fiasco as typical Microsoft PR bleeding, IMO. But they've always been miserably bad at it.

I came to WP7 via iPhone so I'm much more tolerant with regard to restrictions and such stuff. I've also learned to appreciate the "consumer electronics" grade quality, so pretty much accepted the rigidness as the better of the two options. It's not for everyone and of course not for everyone here, but there certainly is simething in the idea.
Otherwise, it's hard to disagree that it does have a ton of drawbacks and even though I'm very satisfied with my Mozart I never recommend it to friends and family who come to me for smartphone advice.
That's my attitude towards WP7 in a nutshell. Yet I'm really annoyed that it's almost impossible to find a thread here without hate posts in it.

I readily admit that it's a work in progress but so is any other OS. I know that some of the things on WP7 are more prominent (aside from android's UI... yeesh) but it's no reason for a lot of people to write it off as a whole. As for the points you said it needed;
multitasking- Coming in Mango, only time I've found it to be a burden was before my zune pass when I streamed slacker.
want to change the UI- I change the colors on mine nearly daily. iPhone is not supposed to have much alteration on it's UI either
want folders- Hubs seems more sensible in my opinion and the apps in the long list are so much easier to find because I can flick my thumb once and catch the app by alphabetical order without it being 4x4.
want mounted storage-Likely not happening and truthfully I don't want it to because that would enable a lot of hacking capability and I personally don't want to see apps easily pirated like they are on android and iphone.
they want free apps that don't suck- I think the free apps on here beat the hell out of free apps on most mobile OSes. iPhones free apps are pretty limited.

Yeah, these posts create as much hate as beeing fanboy.
You see, what you write here is that because YOU don't need something thus it's just stupid or pointless.
The problem is modern OS of any kind today supports MANY DIFFERENT preferences. It supports many different needs, whether you're a "geek" or typical "consumer. You don't like custom rings? So don't use them! It's not only about what you like. It's about general audience.
The problem with WP7 - the biggest one - is that it's not versatile at all.
It's designed to be one way. And however you will try again to convince me that WP7 is so customizable, indeed - it's not. The limitations designed here are horrible.
The upcoming update - NoDo - is not going to resolve anything besides c & p.
And the Mango, well - if it would be April I would say "I'm in!".
But it will be December. Or later.
I just realized it's the first smartphone for 6 years I have which I can't take alone for - let's say - 2 weeks without bringing my laptop together. There are so so many things WP7 is refusing to do. And I even have no guarantee of having them ever back.
I am the user of WP7. Use it all the time. I always have one smartphone as a "super agent". I'm used to the fact that a pocket device almost completely replaces PC when needed. WP7 doesn't do that.
I just discovered few days ago that I really don't like it. I loved it for 3 months - smooth, simple, sexy. But it's half empty inside. This system is really really stupid right now. I could spend huge amount of space here naming these lacks which currently are very annoying.
I was using Android for few weeks only. Didn't really like those flashy graphics so I've chosen WP7, a perfect UI and a promise of a super ecosystem.
But now I see clearly - maybe it will happen next year, maybe.
But maybe not. Current Android 2.3 is exactly what WM was supposed to be, sorry to say that. I can stand those layers of colours and shapes, because I will be able to do whatever I want and more. Yes, a step forward from WM. WP7 makes it all dumber.
So I'm not selling my WP7 just yet but I'm getting Android in 2 weeks about.
Will see how how it goes...
As for WP7 I really hoped all this buzz and amazing PROMISE this OS initially gives will be fulfilled soon. Now a huge disappointment.
I haven't read the posts before mine but I would say most of the people hating on WP7 are owners who are pissed off about the bugs, lack of updates and lack of communication. I find this fair.

Well I have been behind Windows for a very long time, I guess you can call me a fanboy. But Windows really appeals to me and my needs. Being an advocate for Windows I always talk to folks about WP7, personally I havent seen anybody in person besides myself with a WP7 device.
But a guy at my job went from an Iphone 3gs to a Droid x in which he hates. He wants to go back to iphone but of course i suggested WP7 and he was really interested. He thought it was only a few carriers but I had to inform him that all major carriers have WP7. My thought on this at Carriers arent promoting WP7 like I think they should, when I see these Carriers they are flooded with tons of Android devices, its like WP7 is like an after thought.
Another guy I work with has had every Iphone and swears by it but I defend Wp7 of course and he even agreed that he likes WP7 and seemed kinda worried that it may be better, but he also seemed interested in WP7, but everybody that complains about WP7 always goes back to Windows mobile and the App marketplace for WP7. I tell them dont worry it will soon catch up and surpass. WP7 is here to stay and overcome and take its original place back from these imitators. Windows is the originators of this game and they have to take this thing back over and surpass the competition.
But overall I love my DVP and WP7 its everything I want plus more. My wife is salty that my phone actually does what I want it to do instead of constant lock ups and device not working properly like her EVO. Nice device but not very appealing to me.
I know I sound like im rambling but I just had to state a few things to the WP7 public
I agree with what your saying regarding carriers not promoting windows phone 7 as i recently purchased a HD7 and upon doing so i went around to many Australian retailers and i was met with a lack if any knowledge about the windows phone operating system.
I think this can in part explains windows phone 7 sales that and there are no attractive windows phone 7 handsets in my opinion. The HD7 has a terrible screen and a useless and ugly kick stand and is very heavy. Aesthetics and industry design play a massive role in consumer behaviour, apple understands this and its part of the reason why apple really took off in the last few years. I think with the Nokia agreement the mango update and the potential of Samsung releasing a windows phone 7 device that looks like galaxy S 2 windows phone has the potential to flourish.
Yeah the WP7 UI really is great. Until you get bored with it looking the same, then there's nothing you can do except change phones.

Whether the design of a device matches ones personal taste or not is a question of what one likes or dislikes. I for one have an HD7 and love it. I don't share your opinion concerning the screen, weight or even the kickstand.

What about iOS? Still looking the same after all those years. Nothing but a boring wall of icons. Still lots of people love it just the way it is. So it seems that not too many people really care about the customizability of a handset.
As the post above says.
If the UI works, why change it? Android's UI being so flexible just makes it a complete nightmare to use, and most people are never going to bother to put the time in to find the one widget that works out of the 1,000 that do the same job.
Everything comes back to: Users just want to be able to do the stuff they need to. If they can do that by default, no customisation is necessary.

I think many people don't care so much about the UI.
My brain works this way: I like logic but I also need something to entertain my eye. That is why iOS works for people: it is always the same BUT it has tons of eye candy and doesn't get boring really.
WP7 is brilliant but for many users just too dreadful.
Android may be ugly, luckily I use SE which makes it look stunning and classy.

Funny I have opposite reaction. When I had my Iphone 3g and 3gs all I kept thinking of was Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Was going to get an Android to be a little different, saw that MS was changing. At first thought it was weird but after seeing a video I knew it was what I wanted. I am in the tech industry and have to deal with all the phones at work. Amazing how hard a time people have trying to get exchange email on their iphones, androids, and blackberries. For us who understand it is really easy
I was that close to purchasing an Android device last fall when I discovered WP7, although I wound up getting an android device free from T-mobile. But, it was indeed the UI that struck me. Actually, I don't even recall my exact moment of, "Hey. I want that."
But, the more I researched the more I knew that was where I was going, and the farther I moved away from the idea of Android. WP7 was new, fresh, and artfully done.
When I'm using my phone every single response I've ever gotten has been of the, "Wow! That's nice?! What kinda phone is that?" variety. Or, others saying, "Wow! That's that Windows Phone, huh?" It's the UI that gets them all.
Hell, I've even gotten T-mo and Verizon reps that gave me a, "Now that's cool!" after dogging the phone (WM) and then having an actual product demonstrated to them.
So, I would say that the vast majority of people acknowledge looks first. Whether it's a nice looking person, car, house, piece of jewelry, phone user interface, or what have you, our initial reactions are superficial. We gravitate towards things which are pleasing to the eye and WP7 is that for many people.
However, once we get past the "pretty" aspect it becomes about what lies underneath that appealing exterior. And, WP7 still holds up for the vast majority of folks who just want something that works and accomplishes everyday tasks with few headaches and/or hiccups.
I've already converted 7 people over to WP7 because of my phone. Might be 8. I'm not sure if my brother was gonna get one anyway or not.
But, agreed on the UI mention which of course leads to a great UX.

wow that is the most illogical reasoning I have ever heard. So you are saying that iOS which is basically just a bluish static grid of icons and some glassy effects has tons of eye candy compared to WP7 with its elegant and yet lively interface. Just compare Apps such as MTV news, USA Today, Fox News with their iOS counterparts. And these are just v1 apps which will improve as devs get more comfortable with the design aesthetics of WP.

They have Cydia that's why. Full customization. Look up Dreamboard. I mean you don't have to set anything up and bam your phone looks like HTC Sense, WP7, a Microsoft webpage, and much more. It's theming brought to it's utmost potential. Of course there are bugs since it is still in the early 1.xx stages. Installous.
I love my SGS II, 7 Launcher. Hehehe..

yes there are a few google talk apps!
The nav isn't great but there are alternative apps that are good.

Never any lag, and a nice coherent fluid experience throughout the whole os.
Try to get a focus 1.3, win7.5 is out for that currently. The win.5 is smooth and more easy to use than android

There's GChat. The OEM nav is excellent but you have to tap the screen to progress through the voice notifications. The best way to use the Nav is through the search function rather than through the nav app.
I'd say go for it. It's an excellent system. Just don't expect much customization...actually expect a better, more refined iPhone experience.

though dev unlocking does help with customization quite a bit as homebrew has workarounds.

Its in reference to the REV # (on the ORIGINAL Focus phones), which is seen on a sticker under the battery. Rev 1.3 was the main shipment, but Samsung for some reason changed the chips for Rev 1.4 and that batch caused all sorts of mayhem with updates due to differing firmware needed.
However, Rev 1.4 phones are also now receiving Mango so I wouldn't worry much about it.
*edit* Since you stated you wanted the Focus S, this isn't an issue
As far as moving from Android to WP, I made the move back in Feb and will never look back. There are a few things it still needs, but its barely a year old and Mango brought 90% of what I need, into a vastly superior UI experience and stable platform with what is to me, a much larger potential for greatness than the others. The next year is going to be pretty exciting for both WP and Win8 and I expect it to grow pretty well over the next 12 months.

I bought 4 used Focus phones and none were 1.4. All from ebay. It was a smaller batch of phones so chances are you will not get one.

Not my fault this POS OS sucks. I wouldn't want anyone to suffer this embarrassing MS product. I'm ONLY using it because the guy I got it from freaking hated it, and damn near gave it to me. Plus it'll hold me over until the Nexus price drop.
This OS is great for information, but totally sucks at actually doing anything. Smooth natively, laggy beyond that. The apps more than just suck, they cost money and still suck. App support is nowhere to be found. Don't believe me , read the comments from the very very very few users in the market place.
Im a troll for being a dissatisfied user. I find it hard to believe that it's 2011 and people are satisfied with crap. This OS makes simple things hard, ex moving the cursor. Another example video mms. Sharing ringtones? Simple stuff. I could go on forever.

Better return your phone then as you must have a hardware issue. no lag here on my htc surround which is a 1st generation phone. The email is awesome and has none of the lag that the 3 android phones that peeps use at my work have.
as for the cursor, hold your finger, it appears, move it. how hard is that?
Anyway if you want a consistant phone that never needs rebooting and is very stable, windows phone is for you. There isn't as much customization as android, but there doesn't have to be. The apps from the marketplace are top notch and all have free trials so you can try before you buy.

The apps from the marketplace are top notch and all have free trials so you can try before you buy.

open Fuse and tell me it doesn't lag. Open BE and tell me it doesn't lag, hell tell me a third party app that doesn't lag.
Hold my finger and it selects the whole word. Need a cursor marker like smartphones should have.

I used android for two years and love it...
Why do you seem to hate it so much but use it?
I actually find the social integration and overall experience much better than android, and worth the trade off of constantly being able to flash roms and change launchers

You said a lot there. The social integration and especially the IM function is second to none. I find WP7's messaging function much more convenient and just as easy to use, and just as useful, as Google's Talk. But FB account is needed to make it this way, for anyone interested.
