[Q] Keeping the screen on when on external power? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to set the screen to stay on on external power source? You used to be able to set different times for battery and power on my WinMo (Touch HD), but can't seem to do that on Android? I want to keep the music player open when on power source (in the car), so I can see whats playing, and easily switch to the next track without having to unlock the phone!
I know some apps can stop the phone from sleeping (sat nav, games, etc), or is there a better music app than the built in? (I find it simple and easy enough to use TBH).
Suggestions/answers on a postcard please

Go to menu, settings, applications, development, stay awake. This will keep your screen active when on charge

Perfect, just what I wanted... thanks mate! Seems to work well, and turns off when on battery!

No problem. Just remember not to keep it on for too long as some people reckon it can damage the screen.

Hmmm interesting points on both of these. I see even with this setting on it dims (but thats fine for me).
People watch videos etc, or is it the NON moving items such as most of the music interface that may cause damage? I am only planning on leaving it on when driving (up to 3 hours at a time I guess, depending on the M6/M1/M25 ), so that shouldn't be too bad!
But what about the night clock, etc? I personally don't use it, but as it's a feature of the phone, surely the AMOLED screens can cope (SLCD not so sure on?)

IDEA: Make the alarm works with phone off

I found this app https://market.android.com/details?id=eu.chainfire.nomoarpowah
Actually works only for some samsung devices, but the idea is good
Infact the app is able to switch on the phone when the alarms is going to be activated, even if the phone is completely turned off, in order to make it ring..The unique requirements is that the phone is under charging and is rooted of course
I think the same can be applied to our desire as well, because when the charger is connected, the kernel should be loaded, correct me if im wrong
So this mean that we (but not me ) can modify the kernel in order to do a simple thing: it have to check the current time in order to reboot the phone when the time is going to be near to the time set by the stock alarm app (the alarm time is of course written somewhere on the /data partition)
Anyone can say if this can be done through some changes to the kernel?
I know that the solution is to leave the phone on or in airplane mode, but this could be a nice feature for our "old" desire, at least when its charging; but i think that everyone charge it on night and have the alarm set for the morning
Thanks in advance and sorry for my english
Bump! No one have an idea if this can be done?? And no one like this idea?
I thought this already worked.
I was sure my alarm went off on a plane before when the phone was off...

Absolutely not...If ur phone is completely turned off, the phone will remain off forever (even if the alarm is set) untill u turn it on obviuosly
I think I remember my old Samsung dumb phone done that anyway.. if the phone was off the alarm would still sound... maybe it is a Samsung feature? Does the desire have a charging screen when the phone is off?
Edit: desire screen doesn't stay on, Samsung one does (my friends sgs does anyway). Only led on when charging desire...

My SE-P1i (Symbian UIQ 3.0) was working in that way. This is an OS issue as well.

That's correct, but the led color is controlled by the kernel..When chargin is amber, when full charge is green, this mean we can implemnt some logics on the kernel as well..For example we can implement in the kernel something like reboot (turn on) the phone when the alarm is going to ring (reading the setting from the phone file system)

Seems logical and and theoretically would work... however, I know my phone takes a long time to boot... others more, others less, so how long would you be starting the phone before alarm? 15 minutes?

Well, my phone is about standard for the boot time, is about 1 minute (even on stock sense, custom sense roms, aosp roms)..5 minutes before the alarm is enough..But I don't think this is a big problem, even 15 minutes before, just to be sure, it's ok..We just need someone that is able to do the necessary kernel changes (if this is possible; seems strange that no one never implemented this kind of logics when the phone is off under charging)
andQlimax said:
I don't like hibernation mode as is the same as put the phone in airplane mode, the phone remain still on

Quoted from manu kernel thread...
So the actual idea is to make the phone ring.so you don't miss a call? Would the phone not need to be "on" constantly... and if so, why not just leave it on charge overnight? That's what I do?

It´s interesting to think about this and see if it´s technically possible.
But I don´t get the motivation behind it
Why turn the phone completely off if it´s supposed to hang on the cable anyway? To save the 5-20 mA it uses when in airplane-mode?

Would be nice I think, even nicer if it worked without having it charging.

That actually could work only if the hardware will support a sort of "wake up from power off" functionality (our desire hardware support it???)..Like pc and some nokia have..
Alarm and Calendar event reminders goes off after reboot or restart!
I have captivate that runs on Firefly froyo ROM. I have an alarm set in my phone that is supposed to sound every morning. But when I reboot my phone everytime for replacing the spare battery, the alarm is not re activated. In simple works, alarm scheduled to sound everyday does not reactivate itself after reboot. Have to open the alarm, disable it and again enable to reactivate it.
Any solution for this. Also any app that solves the problem? Same thing happens with calendar reminder events. After reboot, the calendar reminder events do not work. HAve to go to the calendar app for it to activate. Any alternate apps for the problem?
I think it must be possible what did my previous phone Nokia 6220 classic had that my newer fella doesn't have it, and that phone could do it. Actually, it turned on a little sooner to ring exactly at the time you've wanted it.
But trust me it isn't that much good you know especially when you don't know there's such a feature. You've turned off your phone and you're sleeping you would kill anyone who dared to wake you up and suddenly a death metal music starts ringing 5:30 in the morning, you got the point :banghead:

[Q] Screen not Turning off

Recently on a few roms I've seen my phone wake itself. Not entirely sure how.. And not to mention, it does this when I'm sleeping. So basically my phone will die within hours as my phone stays on and the screen burns in
Unfortunately I have a 30 second time out and it does not shut off my screen. It stays on entirely.
I need help to fix this issue, I have not recently installed anything I normally don't install things and haven't flashed any kernel or mod that should affect it. I did flash a Beats mod by rocko but I highly doubt that is causing the issue.

It sounds like some app is waking it up and then holding a wake lock. You will have to experiment and uninstall apps to see which app is doing it. Do you remember installing a certain app right before it starts doing it. More than likley it will be one of the apps on the running menu under manage applicarions.

Exactly this, apparently Doubletwist was the culprit. Shame too.. its never done that to me before, I like using my phone as a media server to use on my xbox/surround sound system
Thanks though, appreciate it.

I use better battery stats to find wakelocks. Sounds like yours was any easy find but some can be really sneaky.
I know Songbird has a ton of addons, maybe give it a look and see if it can do what doubletwist does.
In a related note....my screen timeout wouldn't work one day. No matter what I set it to, the phone would never timeout/display-off automatically. I just ran 'Fix Permissions' and issue fixed itself.
I'll have to try it, songbird is sick. I am in love with that audio player.

You probably have an issue with Screen Wakelock(a.k.a FULL_WAKE_LOCK) , which is used by third-party apps to control the screen.
There is an app which is specially developed for solving "wakelock" issues, It is called "Wakelock detector" freely available at GooglePlay.
Or you can just type "Wakelock" at GooglePlay
Here is XDA thread; Xda Wakelock detector
Perhaps this can help as well.

[Q] Screen Glitching, unable to unlock etc.

Hi,
I am experiencing some really strange problems with my phone. I have a 2-month-old HTC one X. I have never dropped it, it has never been in contact with any fluids or damp areas, also I have never tried to unlock and/or root it. It started two weeks ago. The screen started glitching and behaving weird. Sometimes it would stay for an hour, sometimes it was just a few seconds.
(sadly I cant post outside links, but if you search youtube on "HTC one X screen glitch" and than scroll down you will see a video uploaded by DjStasV. Thats what it looks like. But instead of only glitching on a small portion on the screen it was always the whole screen.
But now, it has gone one step further. Sometimes my phone won't unlock if I press the on/off key. The soft keys light up, but the screen doesn't. I can even get called, the phone will ring and vibrate, but I can not pickup because the screen doesn't turn on. For some reason it sometimes does unlock, but I have not been able to discover a reason for that. Also when I manage to unlock it, it sometimes just freezes (the screen). The phone still works (it rings, the notification LED works, it vibrates), but the screen is just frozen. (also a reboot by holding the power button does not work 9/10 times)
I am hoping someone will recognize this problem, and maybe even know how to solve it. Thanks in advance

Screen off and on without using power button !

hi all
first time poster long time reader
I am so tired of trying **** apps.
Could somebody please tell me what app works with the nexus four to allow me to touch the screen somehow to see a text message etc when it arrives??
for the first time ever I am missing the button in my iPhone that let's me hit it to see what is going on at a glance.
I just want a way to toggle the screen on without hitting the power button on the Nexus 4
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The only way to do this is to leave the screen on, which would drain the battery. There's probably an app that would turn the screen off (or dim it), but this would keep your phone awake and drain the battery.
Someone feel free to chime in and correct me if there is such an app.

For the Gnex there's an app called “PGM", I emailed the developer if he had intention to update the app so it works with the Nexus⁴, but sadly he doesn't have the phone yet.

Just wait for PGM to be updated for Nexus 4 support, OP; I can vouch for its greatness. You can enable double tap or slide to unlock gesture to turn the screen on. Once you get used to this, you seriously forget you have a power button.

It appears to work, but needs some calibration. I'm only able to get it working 30% of the time (if even).
you may try Smart Screen On : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.android.smartscreenonlite
works on my Galaxy Nexus running 4.2.1
I'm waiting on a kernel that has Sweep2Wake...that would be awesome with this phone.
Wow I cannot believe the responses I got...
Thanks everyone!
I settled on the Smart Screen On.
Works about 75% of the time...I can live with that till something better comes along.
I don't really understand why you cannot make text msgs received light the screen up like it does on an iphone. It was so convenient to just glance at the phone and see it was work texting yet again and mutter under my breath for them to piss off and then go back to playing Xbox without ever having to touch the phone.

Try Light flow for that... I think you can set a custom LED color and the screen to come on with certain notifications.
Yeah I've got Light Flow. You can set the LED colour and the screen to come on with some notifications. There is a 'lite' version which should cover the basics. But if you dont use the stock messenger or use things like Whatapp, you need the paid for version.
I use it and it has great customisation BUT at the moment I can't get it to work 100% of the time. So be warned!
It will be great though once they update it for 4.2.

For now I'm settling for half of the equation; screen off with a double tap. I'm using screen off and lock from Play.
I had PGM on my GN and it works very well, the developer is planning on getting an N4 the last I heard.
I'm currently looking into getting the phone to wake using the volume rocker -- I'm reading that it's inside android.policy.jar and removing two lines that ignore the volume rocker button presses.
Anyone want to give it a go? I'm going to look into it this weekend.

I emailed him too! That is one of the best app out there, in terms of the idea behind it. No real battery drain, but still be able to wake your device from sleep. I died a little after getting that email.
Kinda hope someone would do something like that for N4.
You can use Tasker+Secure Settings (pro version) to use the Google Now shortcut to unlock/lock the device, but there is no waking the device.
I too am waiting for pgm! That would be amazing

I don't have this phone, but my girlfriend got it recently. I will have to confirm this later, but try this. As with other HTC phones, this should be similar. Go into main menu/settings/wi-fi. Once in the wi-fi section where it will show your available connections, try pressing menu. Then select advanced. You should have an option that you can change for "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep". Obviously select "Always". See if you can find this through the menu settings and if it solves your problem. This should be what you are looking for.
It was already set to always.
