So, are there any ports yet for the Kaiser that have ALL of the following working?
Bluetooth
Camera
GPS
WiFi
It's either find a ROM with everything working (as this is my only device and everything needs to work out of the gate), or jump ship with T-Mobile, move to Verizon, and snag the Incredible.
Thanx.
yes.......
Okay, which one(s)? I've looked through all the posts (I think...lost track), but haven't found one yet that isn't missing at least one of those prereqs. Thanx.
Myn's Warm Donut.
Of course, this depends on your definition of working, I know that camera works, gps, wifi, and bluetooth, however all still have some issues, so if you require these to work with the same efficiency and stability as winmo, we simply are not completely there yet.
No eclair builds have working camera yet.
However not everyone is fortunate enough to always have all of the above working reasonably well in any single build, not without a little hacking and patching at any rate.
To be honest, if your kaiser is your only phone, test drive with a haret install, and decide if you can live with android, personally I can't live without it now
That's just what I needed to hear. I'm off to port my account to VZW and pick up that incredible Incredible! Thanx.
If I had the option, I'd do the same, lol, I love my Kaiser, but sooner or later I will have to upgrade, and now only Android will do

haha quite right. Once you try android, theres no turning back, not to winmo atleast. Its amazing how stupid ms has been and lost all their power users, and most normal users too, even with the release of wp7.
And of course M$ has shot themselves in the foot (again), saying that 'older' devices will not be supported in WM7 so no upgrades. Someone needs to tell M$ we're in a resession! as not all of us can afford a new phone, so with no support and our phones now out of warranty we can do what we like, so bye bye M$ !
I actually like my phone, paid a lot for it, so if I can breathe new life into it with better software then that's good news, its certainly up to the job, just have to be patient and wait for the ports to mature and bugs to be fixed, but that's the great thing about open source, we can fix it without having to wait for M$ to do it, fantastic, just wish I was clever enough to develop/tinker with, the code.
Funny thing is, I have a Diamond and a Blackstone, both are obviously newer and more advanced than my kaiser, but neither can run Android in Nand yet, so they usually sit in a drawer, until the day that someone figures out how to do what has only been done on older hardware so far, namely a bootable Android that does not depend on M$, or HTC for that matter.
My kaiser is the envy of a number of my colleagues, two of whom have Android phones, but having used mine they say that it may be a little slower, but it looks and feels much nicer, and I have had more than one request to swap my kaiser for a Dream, which tempted me for about 15 seconds.....

Wait a second. I just tried Android(Warm Donut) on my Tilt and I am about to go back to WinMo(AthineOS) which has everything working great and seems to be much cooler to use. I wonder what is so great about Android such that there is no turning back for you? Is it the apps cause I have WinMo stacked with some apps that can do much of what im seeing with Android if not better. The TouchFlo in WinMo is much more fluid than in what I experienced with Android. The interface looks better.
Hopefully, some of you can elaborate more on why Android on the Kaiser is considered better (or even worth it) considering what WinMo can do.
Maybe I am missing something cause I thought Android OS would be something special.
Not sure quite what it is, yes, Android may be slower than winmo, however unless you stick with Stock 6.1 you are always walking that fine line between stability and instability, on either OS.
I tried various custom roms, 6.1 and 6.5, and all of them suffered from small niggling annoyances, ( personal opinion, my use of my phone differs from that of the chef, and consequently what may be a great rom for some, may not be for others), Android has been the same really, however what I get from it is 'look and feel', I know thats a bit of a cop out, but thats what the difference is to me, winmo, with any ui, just felt awkward to use for some things, for me Android is smoother and more intuitive, and thats after a lot of years using windows pda/phone devices, from my ipaq 3660 to date almost everything else I have used has been windows based.
I know others will perhaps disagree, or see things differently, but for me windows on mobile devices will never seem the same, thats why I chose Android, with all the bugs and problems we have on devices it was not designed for, over an old, and dare I say, obsolete, OS.
And having been around since the early days of porting Android to kaiser, it's been damn exciting too, something I never felt with Windows Mobile for a long time.

Despite that XDA seems to be more about newer phones then outdated models like ours, more people own those older phones then HD2 or Nexus One's. Simply because even with the discount from carriers, it still costs too much to upgrade.
Plus, a lot of these phones do end up as hand me downs. So they don't go away that easily. Plus, my Kaiser is built like a brick. Despite it's crazy flip up screen (which I love), it didn't break.
Despite being old, it's hardly outdated. The hardware is more then capable of doing 99% of the things I wanna do on my smart phone. About 25% surfing the web, 25% playing games, 10% as GPS, and 40% as a music or movie player.
My only complaint is the battery life sucks, and the camera sucks. More concerned about battery life then camera though.
Battery life is a bigger problem in Android, however as with everything android, new habits are good, like putting it on charge every night, always sees me though the day, which usually consists of music playing, facebook, news, texting and occasional gps use, never been below 40% battery at night, apart from once or twice when i forgot to switch the music player off and drained it completely.
I completely agree with zenity, its mostly about the look and feel of android, somehow it just seems much more better and actually like an OS for a phone, instead of a stripped down version of windows 95 or something. Ive been using winmo for a very long time too, going through wm 2003 to wm5, wm6 and wm6.x, and it was my firm belief that it was the most advanced, if not the most user friendly mobile OS out there. And if you look at the direction winmo is headed to now, youd steer clear of it for precisely the same reason.
But android is much more finger friendly, and even though it may not have equivalents of the most advanced software that winmo had(although I admit I havent looked around that much, android is based on linux and well it certainly doesnt lack the capability), I've found equivalents of all of the software I used in winmo. And the apps are free and nicer, with better UIs. Plus android seems to be well thought out, both in functionality and design. Ofcourse there are problems, but those are mostly due to the porting part of the process. I also had to go through minor changes in habits, but everythings settled down now.
I would like to add my 10p's worth to this debate, I got my Kaiser 2nd hand in 2008, I updated the ROM from O2 when it became available but after that there were no more updates, certainly O2 where not going to release a 6.5 Rom for it, I am not confident enough to put an Unofficial Rom on my device but I wanted to update it. I could not afford a new phone, yes sure I'd like one, but I'm not prepared to pay out £450+ for a phone, I just don't have that kind of money. Anyway I have been looking for ways to update my phone, a while back I found a program called Mobile Shell, by SBP, now this is pretty good, it gives you multiple desktops, cool widgets, but its really only a skin over WM6.1, it is cool though, but left me wanting more. I have friends with Android and WM6.5 devices which I've tried and this did make me want to do something about mine. Also last year, I suffered a detached retina, which left me blind in one eye, (very long story), I was already visually impaired, and now I have lost the sight in, what was, my best eye, which left me struggling to see my phone. Many of my friends, (who are blind) use Iphones, as they have speech output, but I didn't want an Iphone (I like my hardware keyboard, and I am not a 'Follower'). Windows left me lacking again, no speech output, text was tiny, even on largest settings, etc etc. When I was doing some research on accessibility on mobile, Iphone came top, but I noticed an article on Android, about it having accessibility features and speech, which led me (eventually), to ask if it was possible to run Android on my phone to try to get these features and allow me to use my mobile again.
With Zenity's kind guidance, I have Android running from my SD card while I test it out, sadly the Accessibility options will not enable for some reason, but I'm having a look at the market place to see what aps are available. I hear that 2.1 has better features, but as yet, that port isn't fully working on the Kaiser, so as soon as it is ready, I'd like to try it.
The end game is to replace WM with Android and have all the accessibility options in place so I can finally use my phone (normally) again. This must seem crazy to you guys, you are probably saying, "why don't you just get the Iphone and be done with it", well if you knew me, you'd know why, I don't like taking the easy road, if I can get this to work, I can say that I've done it (beaten my disability), just a sense of achievement, just the way I am

That is perfectly understandable, and iphones nowhere near android in terms of functionality and user control. Hope you get it done and find a config that works for you. I dont know if it would be possible to add accessibility into our roms due to our limited memory, but hopefully some devs can look into that. myns warm donut has speech synthesis built in. It is used in many accessibilty apps like these. dont know which of these work on Kaiser though...

Actually I totally understand, my mother suffers from retinitis pigmentosa, and is probably the most stubbornly independent woman I have even known, at 70+ she's still more active than half a dozen 30 year olds put together, and when she decides how things will be, then that is how they will be.
I'm happy to have helped, and hope this inspires someone to take a look at the accessibility options

Thank you guys, yes we can be a suborn bunch
I am happy to run the OS off the SD card if memory is limited, from my use so far, it seems fast enough, so is it possible to create a fully operational version, even if its SD only?
I had not thought about how much space is needed for the roms, I just assumed that the kaisers had enough room as they have a 256Mb Flash.
This thread is really helpful to me. My T-Mobile Wing's screen just broke, and I'm now wondering what kind of phone to get.
I'm looking at used ones: I could get an old Wing (not great hardware wise), a Kaiser or an Android. I'm not sure if I'm ready to jump ship quite yet, so the possibility of running both Android and Winmo is quite appealing to me. Can you switch easily between the two? I understand certain things are not working in Android (mainly keyboard and camera), but it can be used on a daily basis as a phone? Also how's the battery life when running Winmo?
Having had a pocket pc running first mobile 2002, then 2003, and then 6.1 and 6.5 on my phone, I'm quite invested in the Windows mobile platform (however, Mobile 7 doesn't appeal to me from what I've seen).
Because I have several programs I've developed myself in use on a daily basis (some not published), I'm not sure about the Android platform. Any of you have experience developing for apps for Android?

If you are running from SD, switching from winmo to Android is as simple as running haret.exe, from Android back to winmo requires a soft reboot however.

Keyboard works fine, no issues apart from having to be careful how you set up haret's default.txt file to avoid using the wrong keyboard type. Camera works if you use a Donut build, it's not working on Eclair builds yet.
I have used Android ( both donut and eclair, various builds), since early this year, and for the last 4 months it's been my only OS on my kaiser, it's completely useable as a phone, battery life in winmo is good, in android, not as good, however it will last through the day unless you use it for high power demand functions such as wifi or gps for extended periods, but the same can be said for winmo.
The main issues with running from SD are speed and stability, it is slower and less stable running from SD, installed to nand is better, but not as flexible if you need winmo functionality.
All in all, if it is your only phone, don't flash android, unless you are fully committed to it.
This has been going on for awhile now but it keeps getting worse and worse. My Tilt2 is extremely unstable. Usually after I flash it it will be fine for awhile, a couple of weeks maybe. After that it gets progressively more and more unstable. It gets less and less responsive, especially when waking, programs close without warning, I sometimes get graphical glitches. Hard locks are not uncommon. There have been days that I have had to soft reset my phone 3 or 4 times during the day.
Sense seems to be at least part of the culprit. Restarting it when things aren't responding seems to help sometimes. I sometimes have had some luck with deleting all of my text messages but that is only temporary at best.
I have been running Energy ROMs for the most part. Other ROMS I have tried have behaved similarly. XDAndroid is also abnormally unstable.
Could a bad SD card be causing the problems? I was trying to record a video with my phone a few days ago and it just suddenly stopped without warning. Trying to start the recording again resulted in it recording maybe a half second and then stopping again. Changing the storage to internal memory allowed recording normally. The camera app has also popped up a message about a new sd card being detected a couple of times recently.
May I add, that I have had enough with this phone. It's absolutely unreliable for any business worker who really needs a phone that can do simple tasks such as check emails, use bluetooth and of course, make a damn phone call - and it sucks at doing so.
I have flashed it with energy, and I must point out the dev has done a good job in appearance, other than that windows 6.1 - 6.5 is a TERRIBLE OS. I don't care what others have to say; if you can prove me wrong, then show a video that the phone is great.
I have numerous occasions where the phone just starts playing up. One huge annoyance is making calls. If someone calls you, who then later hangs up, the first thing you do is check who it is and then unlock the phone. But once you unlock it sometimes it doesn't allow you to press anything on the screen. You are then forced to reset the phone and wait for the boot screen and after that you are taken to the damn TIME REGION setting which takes an eternity to get to (like i already INPUT the place from before, why the hell must I remind the effin phone again?), afterwards even when you make a call, the call connects but you cannot hear ANYONE on the other line - thus you have to RESET the phone AGAIN!
Even once you are on a call, there are times that the phone decides to END IT. One may ask, "well your ear probably touched something" - great, nice to know my ear can act as a small stylus that SOMEHOW it can go slide all the way to the connectivity area and just by chance HIT the 'airplane' mode making the phone unavailable thus ending your call - this has co-incidentally happened to me already about 25 times!
I can keep going on, but check out my rant review on the got mine section here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=521271&page=173 - and read till the end.
While it has tons of nice eye candy, Energy is not the best in terms of speed and stability. Try a more lightweight ROM, like Jackos. Simplicity is also excellent, although it hasn't been updated in a while. Both of these ROMs are more lightweight, and manage memory better than Energy.
Got room for a "me too"? I've said it before. I don't know if the problem is HTC, Windows, or AT&T...or a combination of the three, but I have: Unreliable, painfully slow 3G; frequent dropped phone calls; Internet browser DNS failures; Wi-fi that seems to be just for show; and finally, a phone that is so slow to respond to any screen taps or button pushses that it tests my patience daily. Oh yes, I almost forgot, I have to reset the phone at least every other day and sometimes as often as twice in one day.
I still have ten months on my contract, and then it is goodbye to HTC, ATT, and Windows Mobile. I know you die hards here on the forum say iPhone is for kids and Windows is for business, but for my business, a working phone is what is important, and this ain't it!

If you must go Energy though, stick with the "Reference" builds. It does't have all the apps you never use on it, just the important ones. Runs much better on speed and battery life for me.

Yes, WM7 might indeed be nice. However, in spite of the typical Microsoft promises, there are still few apps for WM 7...just like prior versions of WM. iPhone, Android, and Blackberry. If you don't have one of those, you are SOL.
BTW, avatar28, I just had to do my fifth hard reset since installing ROM 2.nnnn, so I took this opportunity to go back to the original 1.5nnn ROM. I had almost forgotten how much I lost with the "upgrade", not the least of which is the task manager icon on the home screen and the ability to select from All Programs without having to install each one on a button. Yeah, I no longer have a video recorder, but I'll deal with it (LOL)!

You do realize WP7 is closed-source... right? That means not NEARLY as much development and such that you got on the Tilt2/TP2. Get Android and you will be able to customize even more than you did in winmo, and have a stable overclock.

Android is very stable and is much more aesthetically pleasing in my opinion than WP7. The possibilities with android are so much more vast than WP7. The whole windows phone as a whole is slowly deteriorating and I feel sorry that you don't understand that. It still has hardly any apps compared to Android or even iPhone. You seem like you want a stock operating system though, so I guess if you really want to stay away from modding and customizing your phone, get that 'soon to be dead' WP7.

Like I said, I will most likely go with an android phone next go around - specifically because of the open vs closed source. However - I know of some upcoming things that might also make the win 7 mobile even more of a nice package (for the right consumer). Or maybe it will lead to another release of a new mobile operating platform (ala win 7 trumping 6.5). Time will tell.
To be perfectly honest, I only have the win 6.5 phone because it was free with a 2 year. Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint are currently running a similar deal on win 7 phones. Free is a pretty compelling argument.

It depends on how you order your priorities. In my opinion, my phone is something I use many many times every single day. I want to be able to constantly change it and be excited about it all the time (I got bored with winmo after a while). I just bought a non-contract android phone for around $400 and to me that is worth it, to others who don't care as much about modding and such, it probably wouldn't be worth it.

I don't know that I would say there are very few apps. They just announced the 20k mark at the end of May (doubled in about a month). It's not a lot compared to the 300k or whatever on iOS but a lot of those are basically clones of each other anyways. A lot of iOS and 'Droid apps are just packaged HTML5 anyways and will be easy to port if/when WP7 gets some traction.
I think I may give a different ROM a shot. Something without CHT2 since I think that's some of the problem and I've gotten to where I don't even bother customizing it anymore because of hard resets/reflashes.

I think there is a lot more application development on WP7. But you're right about there being a lot less development of customizations and the like. Maybe with Mango we'll get more adoption and that will help things.
Honestly, I really want a new phone but I'm trying to hold off. I really want to see what Mango and the new version of Android bring to the table and I want some better hardware than the current crop of WP7 offerings. Something with specs similar to the T-Mo G2 maybe.
I have to agree this phone is a disappointment. Part of the problem is that it is underpowered for the software it runs i.e. WinMo/Sense 2.5. I find that a process called GWES keeps expanding over time since last soft reset and consumes a large slab of runtime memory. The effect of this is to make things like the camera really slow to load. I don't know if it is a memory leak but it seems rediculous having a process that doesn't have some restrictions on its memory consumption.
I was having massive problems with Standby Of Death but replacing the SIM card seems to have fixed that much to my surprise.
I have to say that I look enviously at iPhone users who press something on the screen and the response is practically instantaneous compared to the sluggish performance of WM6.5. The WP7 phones are supposed to perform well but I guess the generous minimum specs mandated by MS have a lot to do with that.

I'm sure i made it clear that I prefer a WP7 phone over a WM6, not WP7 over android. I know how android works and that they are an open source, that is not new news. I'm just saying that the tp2 with wimo6 is a joke of a full time business phone. I'm not a full coding developer so I'm not interested in tricking the tp2 that it can perform something when it really can't - or it can't do whatever it's suppose to do well.
Open source is good, but sometimes it sucks that u can come across terrible, buggy apps. Sure they are free and can be fixed but that's where it fails for the consumer. These buggy apps could potentially destroy your phone. And this is the biggest flaw that winmo6 has to offer. it makes sense to just get rid of the whole entire os altogether; the most important fact of what a consumer needs in a phone is one that WORKS as a phone, NOT a developing tool.
I'm sure Microsoft understood this, which is why they are not open source. That's like if nintendo had anyone building their games without any consent from nintendo in doing so. We'd get a lot of crappy buggy games. Plus Microsoft isn't a small company. Having xbox integrated with wm7 plus buying out Skype and working together with nokia for some of their phones is a huge thing for
WP7 - so saying that they will die sometime soon is by far from happening.
Don't think that WP7 will die due to the lack of open source. The most that anyone needs on a phone is to make calls, txt/email msgs, make notes, watch movies, play music and or internet browsing - do we really need many developers to make something that's already integrated on the phone? Plus they have ms office - as a full business worker that's a big plus.
I say reluctantly, because I want WP to be awesome. I want to stay with it, but I just can't do this 'basic' thing anymore. The colours are so dreadfully boring, there's no WP8 support for my device, Zune software sucks ass. I miss being able to just drag and drop into my music folder. Why complicate it needlessly with restrictive software? How many "new" colours will there be? 4? Android used to be laggy, but it's not anymore. Why is there no speed dial? (Yes there's an app for that, but I live in a border city, the only dialer app that displays my network is the native one, and I need to see it). There's no DLNA app (The LG one? Sorry, that's not a working app, that's just some user interface that pretends to be a DLNA app), and the battery. My freakin gosh the battery. I'd get better battery life out of a lemon and copper wire. 99% gives me 12 hours, that's if I close all apps and leave it alone for the day. I own three chargers (work, car, home), and mine is only a 3.5" screen! What if I had went with the HD7??
These alleged WP8 handsets that are coming out, will they be on par with even 2010 tech? Probably not. I'm so underwhelmed by just everything. My bro-in-law has the Note, and it's insane. Super AMOLED HD screen, xvid/h-264 support, HD out, etc. And it's already outdated almost. The Note 2 will be announced tomorrow, and then hopefully soon available here in Canada.
These are old talking points, I know. I've been reading/lurking this board since before WP came out. It's been hashed out time and again. And it doesn't even matter. What matters is what will please you/me the most. What do you care which platform I go with? I'm not bashing anything, just verbalizing my internal dialogue trying to decide. I was a pioneer with this platform, it pains me, I wanted it to be awesome, but it's just not fully functional. "But wait for the next update" worked a year ago, not this time. WP8 will be undercooked and a day late.
The desktop Windows 8 looks like a disaster of Titanic/watergate proportions. I don't want my device to in any way require that... thing of an OS. They missed the point. They may have started with simplicity in mind, but they're far from it now.
I'm due now for an upgrade, but it's not required, so I'm probably waiting until after Christmas to give time for all the iPhone5/Note2/WP8's of the world to be fully released and reviewed.
Anyone else feeling like this?
to my understanding, there's no/not too much heat on new android devices because almost every month(if not every week) there're some new android devices released to the market. You will always find better device if you hold just a little bit, just a little. but for the iPhone or the coming WP8, it'll be quite a long time before you will see a real update, the next release cycle, one year or something. So, before you see those, why jump now?

Yeah that's been the ongoing joke about the iPhone forever. And Android is definitely doing that lately.
There's certain features I really need to have in my next device. The Note has all of them. If the Note 2 dials some back, then I'll just go with the Note 1 and save some cash. If you can wait a couple months and get a little bit bigger screen, why not right?
Wait until Jan/Feb. Im expecting Microsoft to really step up with WP8 or Im gone also. I really dont like Android, but I might be out of options.

I have a A500 running 4.0.3 I think, it works fine, but I ran into a lot crashes and problems too. I think I'm very open on which OS to use, the cheapest I think I got my Windows Phone Arrive for free, absolutely free, not even activation fee, so that's why I'm with WP7. But in fact, if I jump on the new release iPhone 5, but sell it, profits.
Another Option
This is not a flame but a genuine question. Why not wait and see what RIM come up with? I got my HTC Titan because I like the look and style of win 7 and realy do not like Iphone or Andriod and yes i have had an Andriod and my girlfriend has my Iphone 4. I too feel there is just too much missing from win7 and am due an upgrade about November so if RIM can manage to sort out there act i might give it a try.Remember how things were for apple a few years ago when they were talking about just selling the company
its just an idea
Mark
^ waiting on RIM, it'll be sometime next year before an actual device is released.
Side note:
I just sold a GS3. Damn beastly phone, the best I ever had. I didn't even mind Touch wiz. I had it for one full day before selling it, that home button just ruined the experience for me though.

What vetvito said. Blackberry won't have BB10 out until like Q2 2013. As well as that, I'm just not interested in the last hurrah of a sinking company. It will probably be pretty limited. I'm just getting done with a 'new' platform, I'd like to be with something that's worked in.
Yes exactly my thoughts also on RIM. I dont want to switch to an OS that most likely will not be around anymore in few years. Before Nokia announced MS partnership I was expecting Meego to be the thing for me. I really hope hope WP8 is meeting my expectations and I wouldnt have to move to Android.
My suggestion would also be to simply wait what Microsoft's partners and Apple are bringing to the table next month. If you wait until december you should have all the options aside from RIM for whom I personally would not wait.
The Note is a nice phone in theory but the only one I know who owns one is telling me permanently about the newest strangeness it decides on doing (guess it's simply his device that's acting up - at least I hope so).
On the hardware front I'm not that concerned over WP8. The release handsets were announced to all feature Qualcomms Snapdragon S4 Plus chipsets which, even though being dual core instead of quad, offer better performance than the Tegra 3 and Samsungs own Quadcore-Chips due to the Krait-Architecture by Qualcomm. It's the same chip the LTE-Versions of the HTC One X and Galaxy S3 currently use. HD displays are also a go with WP8.
The biggest question will be WP8 features and it seems we will know whats coming there in one week.
I do see the point in waiting, but I just got myself a Focus S and its the dogs bollocks
I think what most users need to do is actually sit down and find out what they want from their phone.
apart from being able to install customs ROMs this phone does everything I want it to and it looks amazing so for me its ideal, waiting for a WP8 device may seem prudent just now but again, what do you actually want it to do, WP8 will bring new features but do you really NEED them or is it a case of "yeah that would be cool to have" if its the latter than you are buying it for the wrong reason.
theres too much focus on tech and not enough on actual usability. I can promise you that no android or Iphone will be better for my needs at the moment, not because I know every single device out there but because I know what I need my phone for, and the Focus S ticks all the boxes
So that's my advice, sit down, and write down what your phone MUST do, not what youd like it to do but MUST do, once you find a phone that does all of those things weigh up costs etc yes WP8 will be out soon, but do you NEED it, the answer may be no, but the flip side is that WP7 devices will drop in price so perhaps that's your best option.....anyhow, just food for thought
At the end of the day, it is just a phone. Doesn't matter what OS you buy into but this time around, don't buy a phone which "looks" good or "feels" good.
I would suggest trying out the phone and functions to your heart's content before parting with your money. Like everyone else, I am playing a waiting game before I invest my cash on any OS. This Christmas Santa will be pretty confused too!

MY WORDS! WP8 has some new features, but 80% of the world does not use NFC. look at Europe or Asia, have somebody seen some NFC around? the same thing, even worse is with east Europe. ok the better screen and the developer could make apps for WP8 in c++ but that not that big deal for the mayor of us. the problem is Other operating systems like Android made the WP7 users to WISH better specs. that's the problem, like an virus thats now in the heads of a few WP7 users. my WP7 does everything what i need to have from a phone right now, and for the next one, two years! like you stated people think of WP8 "yeah that and that feature would be cool to have" but i will never use it. i say lets wait until 7.8 and the new start screen, it looks and feels like the WP8. ok we dont get wallet and such thing, but wallet i dont need, i have a real wallet made out from leather the only thing whats not so good for wp7 is that voip agent can not run in background like the GSM service. so that would be an WP8 feature why i would switch, but not right now, maybe next year when the devices would be around 300-400€ in Germany.

I disagree on some of these points. Higher screen resolutions and native code are very important features. Native code enables easier porting of apps from iOS and Android (not to mention more similarity between WP8 and Windows RT) and should make these apps faster / more responsive. Having a choice of a retina display would also be nice
It would also be nice to have some bug fixes, which is more likely to happen on WP8. Tango seemed to break podcast management for some of us, in addition to a few other niggles (e.g. why can't I edit the original email after pressing reply / forward?, volume normalisation issues etc). The overall experience is good - however, there seem to be several rough edges in WP7.

Hmm good thoughts, but I disagree.
With things as luxurious as cell phones, the wants are what's most important. Cause if you go by "needs", then I'll be getting a simple feature phone, or a low end Android. Because I don't care who you are, no one needs resolution even as high as 800x480. What I "need" are email and text capabilities. I think the RAZR circa 2004 had that.
What I want is not what WP can provide right now. I know HD screens are approved, but welcome to 2011, as we head into 2013. They'll always be a step behind. Will WP8 have HDMI out? x264 support? Working DLNA? wifi hotspot? Doing away with software and just allowing drag and drop? Motion (press screen and move your hand around)?
I've been to the threads and looked at the features we've seen so far and it's just what should have been included in October 2010. The saying "wait for the next update", has been given as an excuse for every single update.
Just waiting now for news of the Note 2. Berlin is like 5 hours ahead of EST isn't it? I would've thought it'd be revealed by now.

Seriously, it would be nice to be with a solid performer.
Meego looked cool, and Bada looked promising as well. C'est la vie I guess.
Android really has come a long way
Personally I didn't really like stock Android without sense till ics. It changed everything. Battery is meh compared to I phone, but with a custom kernel I can get ~12 hours with 1-2 hours screen on if I stick with lte. With jb its really smooth too I'd recommend a Nexus if you want os support. I have an HTC Rezound and htc is really poor with updates. If you are willing to root a toro/maguro will be supported for years. If not, you should at least get a year more of updates since the phone came out last November.

Ah but usability is the main point here, HDMI, x264, DLNA, NFC are all features that are completely meaningless for many of us, you are absolutely right that a feature phone from 2004 would have done all that I need, but my phone does it better, quicker and a lot more efficiently! but that is my point if you NEED HDMI then that becomes a tick box that must be met, if it is a "oh that's a cool feature" then it shouldn't be a main tick box otherwise you'll be a mug for marketing and end up spending more on stuff you don't NEED.
All those folk out there with quad core phones are a prime example, slapping a quad core in my phone will make absolutely no difference at all in the slightest and I question anyone that doesn't play games or encode video on there phone to tell me that it does make a difference, its a great marketing tool though, its QUAD core guys, its X4 better than a single core, you MUST have this, and people lap it up, hook line and sinker

I've been been on android since the g1 days, got every new android phone that everyone said was great. I had the first galaxy phone, the original nexus 1, the nexus 5, the htc one, the oneplus 3t, even note phones. Today I decided to leave this inferior product behind. How delusional have I been saying android is better all this time. Here's the thing, iPhone works. I can no longer connect to WiFi networks anymore because of some security update. I am still pissed I paid for a camera I can't use. I'm tired of missing calls because this phone decides to put itself on do not disturb. The final straw that broke the camels back is location settings and privacy. Apple decided to let people protect their privacy, google is actively trying to stop people from protecting their privacy. Take for example find my phone which is useless now unless you have location turned on at all times. WHY......? I am able to turn on location remotely on Samsung phones but here is google blocking your from doing it. If you loose your phone your freaked unless you let google know exactly where you are 24 hours a day. Forget GOOGLE, Forget ANDROID, Forget ONEPLUS!

Otherwise of location, you can disable every app instead of the system applications related to find my phone.

But apple fracks up in regards to downloading stuff and is more restrictive than android.
Plus my iPhone apps are all 110 mb lmao, my mobile data will finish soon if I download anything.

My favorite one fits in my hand...
Note: iPhone maps work so much better than Gmaps, other than that... I'm not impressed.
Lol, Gmaps suck, always have.
Just because you can't configure your Android in a way you're happy with doesn't mean the alternative is better in every way. Particularly, I don't like your attitude about the location tracking, like Apple is actually better, well I'm here to tell you they're not. Have you heard of Wi-Fi scanning? It allows Wi-Fi networks to track your location more accurately than GPS quite often because of Wi-Fi triangulation. And you can't turn that off on iPhone, even when you turn Wi-Fi off, your phone is triangulating Wi-Fi letting Apple always know your location, and on addition, Google because most of those routers report WiFi info to Google.
If you want a privacy respecting location tracking tool, like the Find My apps, you shouldn't be relying on your OEM anyways, whether it be Google or Apple or Samsung.
As someone who's used both platforms, I wouldn't blame you if you use an iPhone and like the usability more, but your rage induced reasoning here doesn't seem all that informed or thought out.

Well, Seconding this post. I agree, in my latent opinion it is clear that both platforms have pros and cons respectively.
The iPhone settings are a mess... they give me a headache. Way too dumbed down.
Plus I doubt there's a package disabler that works on a stock iPhone
Just stuck with what and how they give it to you.
No.
Problem you have is you literally cannot do anything with an iPhone.
Least with Android you can root and make changes.
This is no longer an option for you, not only that but if you do get the latest and greatest then you'll be paying the highest possible premium in the world for it.
Sorry but apple just do not tick anywhere close to every box, they can't due to their ecosystem.
Then there's the emulators, root tools, mods, ability to freely copy things to and from your device, I can send an entire folder structure over android beam, my choice, my way.
Sure Google has got a little Adolf Hitler over these last few years, but apple is the bloody antichrist in comparison.
More to that point, you will not be ruling in hell. You'll be more of a slave to apple than you ever were to android.
And as a g1 user, I think you should be ashamed of yourself if you can't understand the benefits of android over apple, yes they're a little cleaner and a little shinier, but the benefits are superficial and skin deep.
If you have an issue, let us know, we'll try to help.
If you are the issue then perhaps being a slave to apple will suit you.
Either way, ranting with no point to make is not the way I would have went.

Well that's what 2 factor authentication is for. I have had that active for years. Whats the point of disabling access to other applications when applications can just keep tabs on other applications. How about battery life? This has irked me ever since android removed the option to turn off GPS and leave location on. They obviously did it for a reason, to get more accurate information about you. BTW it has been reported that google actively tries to bury and confuse users about its location settings. I'm not worried about my data, plan I don't pay it, but if I did what good does it do me since I can't connect to any enterprise wifi. I spend half of my day at work unable to connect to WiFi an relying solely on data.

I gave up on Samsung too, I hate their update lottery. My favorite computer is also my phone that's why wifi is important to me. I used to print documents straight from my phone at work because it is faster. I can't do that anymore. Unless I downgrade to a more unsecure version of android. Whats the point of security updates if I have to downgrade making my phone more vounarable just to get basic functionality back.

Lets assume I have been here for the whole ride since cyanogenmod. Configuration is not the issue. I would not care if it was just google tracking me. I can disable location history but that's not the issue here. Your making this issue about one thing. Read my post its an aggregate of things. Again this is basic functionality. Sony got sued for removing the ability to load linux to its system, here is oneplus completely dissabling and rendering useless something they charged money for.

It's a joke isn't it ?
Each Jailbreak depend a hack / breach, so each time you must wait for a jalbreak for a new iOS version or iOS fixed version (Apple block each time Jailbreak on new version). Above all even with Jailbreak there a lot of things not availbable on iOS, and the first reason is now all iOS users don't care Jailbreak... They want the lastest iOS version without headache.
For Android, Root is for a lot of OEM granted/allowed (OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, etc...) and don't void warranty, only Desimlock tools / Changing IMEI void warranty.
This OEM share their model kernel source and root can be granted by simply patching boot and/or using a custom recovery like TWRP.

It's been 13 years since android came out and every year a new plan to make updating easier. Remember project treble? All failed promises.

The security hype is just that. My 10+ Pie does fine in the real world. Same firmware/updates for the last 1.5 years.
Your mistake was updating.
I picked off a trojan preloader and a malware jpeg over a year ago, no damage.
That same malware likely breach the latest updated Pixel just as easily. In the last year zero breaches.
A phone is only as secure as the person who operates it. I don't use wifi and limit bt use in high usage areas because vulnerabilities in this OS... which also have never nailed me. Regardless all my data is redundantly safeguarded and a complete reload takes me about 2 hours with no internet because I have a SD card/data drive*. So even if I get nailed it's not going to eat too much time. I'm readily to reload *now* if need be.
*if that's compromised add another 5-6 hours to the reload time. Still no critital data loss.

I should be ashamed of myself? LMAO I have 0 brand or platform loyalty. Go look at my last posts on roms, questions go unanswered for weeks. Good to know I have to root my phone just to make it functional because that's what we have all been doing all this time. You act like its a feature instead of a coping mechanism. Slave to apple lmao a little dramatic no.......? Lets get something straight I am not a fanboy. The minute I get tired of apple ill drop them too. I am just tired of all this shenanigans I am well aware of all of apples limitations. Theres is plenty I am giving up here I understand that better than anyone but I would like to have basic abilty of having my phone (its primary purpose) ring. I'm not the only one having this issue dont act like I am in a bubble.

Your questions go unanswered? Oh wow so you're a needy, spoilt child? You sound like you've never worked for anything in their life!
Your questions go unanswered????
Get a grip on your life son. The last question I put in the 8 Pro forum went unanswered, why? Cos probably it's a difficult question to answer, or someone didn't want to say what they thought cos they felt ashamed! Or they just didn't have the confidence to say what they feel.
Either way you're dropping a brand, a phone and a company cos you were impatient??
Since the G1 days??
I'm from the G1 days yes I was there on day zero and again with the hero, then the desire HD and the one.
I've never seen a guide from you. Or a tool or a helping hand..
You're a spoilt child, you want it all yesterday, you're willing to give nothing! The Devs on Android have given "years!!!!" Not days or weeks, and now decades, so what? Can moan?? Zero contribution and maximum take!!!
I'm not the matter of coding but I've made it my business to contribute, you've done nothing and took everything, whilst being super ungrateful!!!
You take and you take, it's quite obvious.
Now you're throwing your rattle out your pram..
Please, go chill with apple, we as a community have lost nothing but a leech.
Apple has added a volume to its plethora of bots.
I'm sure you'll be happy.
The completely wrong choice but hey, when you know you know right?
PS:. I'm 99% confident I could have fixed all of your issues either in person or remotely, but you'd have to give me a Charlize Theron massage to get be to help you now, you've made me revert so slightly ill
And I would have, for zero cash, just to help you, just to make sure you're ok!??
Good luck finding these types of guys with apple, lol never!!
Lol.
I'm fine with your thread, it's weak.
I was nice to you and all you could take away was me saying ashamed!
( Your do realise I said that for a reason right?)
Guess not.
Bye bye, enjoy your £1800 2015 phone with less memory than you need and more optimization than you can use.
Any more bad vibes, please message me directly I do not want to annoy XDA mods.
I know you're so wrong, thing is so do you!!
You just have no imagination, and you've either Bennett been able to delve down deep enough to explain an issue or you're lazy!!!
IPhones stand alone with certain tasks, but they're left behind with most things.
Do these things
1. Send me a Bluetooth file
2. Send me a folder from your phone
3. Send me a movie stored on your device
4. Fire up an emulator
5. Use your phone as a pc
6 Overclock your CPU and GPU
7. Turn off your page file, zram, swap file
8. Kill people off the WiFi you're connected to!!
9. Download and keep Adobe lightroom for free!!!! (Lol with apple??? Hahaha nope)
10. Beat my all time SOT legend score.
11. Huawei P20 Pro - 2 days- 17 hours 37 minute's in one charge.
12. Use two SIM's one phone!
13. Install a third party application within 1 minute of opening your phone's box
14. Copy all your unofficial (now lost) music from your phone to a blank external drive.
15. Try to get help on XDA for your phone!
16. Move the clock
17. Make the phone louder
18. Connect to an android watch
19. Share screen on an average Android box
20. Let me mod and use your phone as a microphone which can broadcast everything round it!!
The answer is no, and if it's no today then jailbreak wise it may be no tomorrow.
Where Android make the door wider, apple tries to close it.
Apple people are just horrific, self righteous, loathes who usually would just pay a bill blindly than check and then pay.
Tbh the way you've reacted you pay for the bill.
This is my last message on this thread to you. You're either too short sighted to see my point or too too proud to accept the help you've been offered, you have a OnePlus phone. I could turn that I to a beast!! Truly.
Btw my friend boarded a private jet and his iPhones glass over the camera cracked on the table in front of him.
Apple told him he did it, no warranty.
Bruce Willis in his peak - "if I die can I pay my music and movie collection to my daughter?"
Apple: - "no you cannot!"
Good luck lad.

Seems about the same as fidgeting; it wastes time jumping from one platform to another if not needed.
Easiest fix would be to flash back to the firmware that was working for you. When Samsung or Google drop the ball (and they frequently do) don't pick it up, instead use the one you got your hands on.
I will likely will be using Pie for years to come as Android 11 is flat spinning in at a higher sink rate than 10 and accelerating. A10 was the last usable Android OS and it has some real nasty usability issues that Pie doesn't have.
For what? To emulate Apple? Idiots.
That rotten OS put more challenges on Samsung's plate to try to make it usable but Sammy can only do so much with rancid base code.
It actually Samsung you should be addressing... they take criticism really well especially the SK reps
I think most people on this forum can agree that the biggest shortfall of Samsung's devices is the bloatware. Be it the Samsung app, the google apps or even the netflix app, everyone has something they wish wasn't there which is why ADB is so popular.
It would be great if Samsung was to allow a custom app load on startup.
That is precisely what I am suggesting for the Samsung UI beta. I'd like to get some feedback, or at least some "hearts" from the XDA community to show interest on their dedicated suggestion forum.
UI Suggestion
Good afternoon, It is undisputed that Samsung makes great phones with great hardware and physical integrity. That being said, the most prominent complaint against them is the abundance of bloatware. It is so prominent that many will skip the purchase, and others will use a debloating program...
us.community.samsung.com
Thank you,
What's bloatware to some is a useful app to others. A builtin package disabler be nice though.
Much of the Samsung bloatware sits there and uses little or no resources unless used. About 30 out of 80 apps I disable are Samsung. Some are toggled on/off as needed.
Samsung's auto updates are far more troublesome and need to be locked down
Firmware upgrades can and do kill Samsung's especially later ones.
So with some wherewithal it's not a big deal using 3rd party work arounds, settings and a firewall. Otherwise there's always iPhone...
That said the last 3 flagship releases for the Note/S series have been lacking with dropped balls a plenty. Right now Samsung has no new flagships I'll buy even when they become marked down.

There is no good flagship option atm.
The P6? lol
The S22? Bleh
Upcoming P7? A possible repeat of the P6.
Upcoming S23? May be worth the wait?
Apple? As much as it pains me to say it, I do find them more and more appealing when comparing.

Apple? No.
No expandable storage kills Apple without even getting into their firmware/software/DRM issues. However don't expect much out of Samsung with their next new release.
With both Samsung and Google Android I'm banking on it taking them at least 1-3 years to get their sorry acts together. To that end I will continue to use my N10+'s running on Pie and Q. With a projected lifespan of 2-3+ years... means I don't care.
Let the other rats run the maze, I'm chillin

No sd card sucks on all 3 main manufacturers. It is such a strange thing to have removed.
I was also hoping to ride my old p2 for a while longer until better options come out, but i jumped in a river with it instead
I'll need to select something for the next 3+ years when my backup phone fails (well on its way)
Anyway, i dare to dream on the bloatware front and hope for built-in solutions

Google been pushing to kill expandable for years. They got the MS cloud control power fantasy going on.
Well I can still recommend a N10+ which is what I would buy today. Bought my last one 10 months ago. New ones are still available and their loaded with Android 10.
yes, bloatware from Google and Samsung
