Speaker Blew on my rooted phone - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I take it back to verizon will they check to see if it's even rooted? Last time the speaker blew on my old incredible he just listened to it and then sent me a new one. Does HTC check to see if it's rooted? I upgraded to the 2.15 radio with s-off, any way to return it to stock?

There are several threads around here for returning your phone to stock. Find them and do it before you take it back, then you won't be all nervous and sweaty when you are in the VZW store while they inspect your phone.

From the threads I found I thought it was impossible to unroot if the phone is s-off.

Well

Then you haven't been searching, because that is not a possible conclusion. Even visiting the unrEVOked s-off web site would have shown otherwise.

I'm in the same boat, My refurb comes Wednesday..
It's so easy to root and unroot and S-OFF to S-ON,
I was rooted, then downgraded for 2.2. OTA, then got tired of waiting and did the update.zip OTA. then speaker blew, so I went back to 2.1 put S-ON, and then 2.2RUU to be stock with S-ON, .. while im waiting im back to s-off on CM6.0.2..
so you will downgrade to 2.1, do s-on cos u need to be rooted to,
then ruu

Why not just call customer service and tell them your speaker is blown? They will send a replacement without you having to show someone. Just make sure to unroot and S-ON before you send the bad phone to them.

Aggravating

They will aggravate the heck out of you. I had to return my DINC # 2 which I received with a pre-blown speaker (I guess QC on refurbs is electronic testing only). The VZW tele-rep actually started on the script, asking me if I had pulled the battery. I got quite aggravated, said "really? you are really going to ask me if I pulled the battery for a blown speaker", and they just pushed me up the chain to tier 2 (who apologized).

Weird, I never had any issues getting replacements sent to me when I had my old moto droid. Had 4 replacements before I got one that worked.

I'm on DINC # 3, but DINC # 2 (above) worked perfectly fine except for the speaker. DINC # 1, on the other hand, would superheat until it would enter a reboot loop.

I just got my replacement from Verizon for the same problem. All I had to say was that the speaker blew and I didn't drop it or anything. It was a 5 minute conversation. Got my new one in 2 days and then unrooted and s-on'd the old one. Have to mail it tomorrow, you have ten days to send the old one back.
incredible with Virtuous 2.0 and kings 3

I'm in the same boat except I got a scratch on my screen that's deep and I called and said I blew a speaker, refurb will be here tmw. regardless to say I bought a case today for it lol.
IDK if it's a new case but this one is sweeet I got it at my locla store, its gel type but clear on the ege and te back u can see the htc cos its clear too a stripe down the middle.

refurb came todayl. and its better than my other one that was brand new less than a month ago.. back dorr fits better. battery fits better.. isnt loose. overall im happy. stickers were on the amera lens and everything eslse. this was a gos refurb. thanks u verizon.

[Q] returning evo

Hey all, I was wondering if you think Sprint would give me a hard time for wanting a replacement evo due to mine having screen separation issues? My phone was not dropped or anything of that nature. No physical damage at all.

I doubt that they would give you much trouble about wanting a replacement under the manufacturer's warranty. You can look forward to receiving a refurb from the sprint warehouse at this point however.

they sent me a refurb initially only a week after release and the g-sensor didnt work. subsequently after a ***** session with assurion i got a complete brand new unopened package. ;-)
I wouldn't mind a refurbished phone as long as there's no separation. Also, would it be an 003 hardware phone? Mine is currently 002 seeing as how I got the phone on release date. And they wouldn't happen to send an already 2.2 phone cuz I want root..>_>

The refurb I got from my sprint store this morning is a hardware version 003 running eclair (2.1). Keep in mind that it will most likely take a few days for them to get a replacement in from the warehouse for you.

I didn't bother to make a scene about getting a refurb since it was essentially my fault that the phone was bricked to begin with. I was happy to get a working phone without any out of pocket expense. I would have been happier if it was a brand new one obviously. My only complaint about the refurb is that the kickstand has a few scratches on it.

I went to a Sprint repair center in the Dallas/FT Worth area this afternoon. I've got two bright spots on the screen itself and some separation at the base of the phone.
They didn't have any phones in stock to replace it, so they gave me the option to have the screen replaced or to replace it when they get one in stock. To prevent losing root, I opted for the screen replacement option.
While discussing the repair, the rep said that the screen replacement part includes the plastic screen cover, the LCD panel and the outside bezel. Fixes both problems.
Oddly, they would do the full replacement if the only issue I had was the separation problem. Apparently they can fix the light leakage problem, but only at another facility. To keep clients happy, they replace the entire phone.
The screen replacement is a 5 minute job, or so I was told.
Long story short, you shouldn't have any problems getting it replaced. The Sprint people are aware of the issue. However, you will get a refurb or new unit and may get a Froyo 2.2 OS build that can't be rooted (yet).
Yeah, I don't think they'd cause a huge problem. Well, I'll give sprint a call tonight and see what they tell me.

[Q] sprint store with a rooted evo

so I have the screen separation appearing on the bottom right corner of my screen. I am rooted with CM6 and wanted to know should I unroot and go back to stock before taking my phone to Sprint Service center? If so, where can I found the stock latest 2.2 to flash my phone back to stock?
Thanks for all advice and helps in advance!
I got the screen replaced on my Evo last week due to dust under the upper left corner. I took it in just like I use it...running Fresh Rom and the Riptide theme. They won't say anything about being rooted unless you are bringing the phone in for a problem that may be related to rooting. Screen seperation isn't that type of problem. They didn't even mention it.

Did they charge you?
If there is no physical damage (scratches, dents, water damage) it should be replaced for free.
While that guy was lucky, I would DEFINITELY unroot before taking it in. Rooting voids your entire warranty, and if they see it, even if your problem is hardware related and not software related, they can void the warranty and you will never get it fixed. Better safe than sorry.

Forgot I had a nandroid backup saved on my computer of my phone while it still had HTC rom.
Turned out my glass on the front panel was version 1 which means my complete phone has to be replaced.
So now I will have Android 2.2 with HTC rom and will have to learn to root that. It was so easy to root when I had 2.1 but I'm sure I will be able to handle it.
New Evo on Thursday!
Hope the newer ones are better!
Any opinions on the new Evos or any thing I should know about the newer ones?
I called my local Sprint repair center and asked what their policy was on rooted phones. Like the OP said they didn't care as long as you aren't having software issues. If you are thinking about taking your phone in call the store and ask it won't hurt a bit. Now if you think they are going to replace your device save your self a trip and unroot first because the phone will need to be returned to stock before they will exchange it. The employees were actually impressed with what had been done with the phone and were very cool about it. Think about it they work on phones hopefully they like what they do, they think its cool too.

So, since I am getting a new phone out of this and my phone is still rooted, should I go back to completely stock?
All I did was flash back to my very first back up with HTC stock rom.
Will just having my Evo flashed to that first backup be enough when they ship off my phone after they hand me over my new one or should I fully restock my phone?
Does the phone go back to Sprint or HTC?
fully unroot and return the phone to stock it is easy to do its like 2 steps and takes only a few minutes.
people act like it is an hour long in depth process to root and unroot your phones its 5-10 minutes to do it and better not to take chances. All it takes is for one guy having a bad day to be a **** and make a note voiding warranty etc. Also in your case now is it really worth risking having to go home and unroot it then run back out to do the swap if they need you?
just unroot (not just flash stock htc actually unroot)

I've given back a few rooted phones for non-root related issues (speaker bad, kickstand won't stay in, LEDs don't work - 5 evos total so far) with no issues. Did the same with a lot of flashed TP's (12) and TP2's (2).
They can void your warranty for rooting it, sure, but they can't over the battery. Just tell him you don't know anything about it and you bought it that way on craigslist. That doesn't protect your warranty, but unless the guy has just decided to be a total d-bag they'll probably replace it anyway.
Also, the employees behind the counter are just people too. Being nice and not acting like you have a sense of self-entitlement to anything you want goes a long way. Believe me, I know first-hand. Customers' attitude factors in fairly heavily in how they get charged at the computer shop I work at because the techs set the prices on jobs.
Just be nice, don't be an a-hole yourself. If they say they won't fix it - fine. Say thanks anyway, be polite, and leave with it. Go home, unroot it, pick a different sprint store, and go complain about your original problem again. Five bucks says they'll fix it no questions asked.
It sounds like some of you need to read the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. The very notion of "my entire warranty is voided because I'm rooted" is completely illegal and anyone that tries to tell you otherwise could find themselves in some legal hot water.

Not true, if you modify or alter a consumer product to a point that it performs significantly different than the manufacturer intended, the manufacturer is under no obligation to warranty it any longer.
I'm pretty sure this topic has been addressed many times and there is no set answer? I vaguely remember reading a legal article on it as well. It would be nice if there was an official statement made by both carriers and phone manufactures.

That is not entirely true. They can not void your warrenty for issues unrelated to rooting. If you brick your rom, sure that is legit for them to do that...but if my LCD fails, and is unrelated to the rooting, then no they can not. If they try to do that, you make sure you fight it.
I had a repair center in my town refuse to fix my speaker on my mogul with low volume problem, because I had a scratch on my battery door cover. He said my warrenty was void to to "Physical damage."
After a phone call to Sprint, and apparently other complaints that service center lost thier contract with Sprint. I ended up with a touch pro 2.... (Although I just wanted my mogul fixed , I was never happy with the TP2, and bought an EVO )

Stuck at boot - should i buy

The story goes like this:
I have a Desire and today saw a local Ad where a guy sells a Htc Desire Z stuck at boot after upgrading. Thats the only info provided.
Now, the price is around 160 euros or 222 us dollars.
I have lots of experience with root/s-off from the Desire and anything with that shouldn't be a problem.
My questions are:
Is there a way to brick this phone?
Can it be somehow unbricked?
If the guy tried to update the phone to the latest one, can i root it then or downgrade it perhaps and root then?
Thank you very much whoever answers this.
Well hopefully some brighter folks than I can ellucidate whether it is possible to get out of a bootloop.
What I can offer however is my opinion on the purchase overall. $222USD is a good chunk of change. If there's a chance that it is not recoverable, I don't think it would be worth the gamble. Now if it were the nearly unbrickable Vibrant or something, I'd say go for it.
I bought my G2 in near mint condition for $275.
It all depends, Is it S-off? Does he have a custom recovery installed? Can you boot into Hboot and then into recovery(Clockworkmod Recovery)? If so then you probably can install a rom on the sdcard and flash them from recovery.
If its in a boot loop with S-on I would not touch it.
Boot loop with S-ON means it still has Nand protection which means you can't do shiz with it. I do have a little story though.
Bought a G1 off craigslist and shortly after the screen started acting wonky so I said what the hell and called Tmo. Explained the problem and hoped theyd have some pointers since the G1 was new and resources like this didn't exist at the time. They ended up being able to look up the phone and determined it still had warranty time left on the device so they exchanged it for me. Sometimes warranty carries over with phones. I'd call Tmo before I bought though and have them go ahead and send me a refurb then go buy the bootlooped one and send it back.
Supposedly he tried to install a different ROM which implies that he's rooted.
That should be fixable then, right?
Or is s-off really necessary for the Z?
UPDATE:
he just lowered the price to around 100 euros.

I actually just did something similar. I bought a used G2 that was in perfect physical working order but with physical blemishes etc. and was about 3months old. About a week later dust started to accumulate under the screen. Even though the phone was used and I was on a EM+ plan with no contract and I didnt purchase the phone from a T-mo store, they still replaced it for free. More of a statement about how great T-mo support is than anything, but I think its interesting that they will support the device even though its used.
Now anything more than this is quite borderline not very ethical depending on who you ask, but I wouldn't really feel like buying a bootlooped phone just to try and send it back to T-mo and claim you don't know what happened. If that was very possible then the guy that currently has the phone would probably have done that already...
Yeah, i bought it.
The problem is/are it won't boot or turn on at all.
I'll send it to the repair shop to see if anything can be done.

This was right after a new version came out. The tech even commented on how he hadn't got to mess with one of the new ones yet. I couldn't root with unrevoked because they hadn't cracked it, so I think it was a new one. Either way it went nuts before I got a chance to root it & now I'm on my third. If this one's a refurb then I don't really care because it's the only one that hasn't pooped on me.

[Q] Insurance Claim Replacement Phone

It came in the mail today. It came with 2.3.3 pre-installed. It seems from searching on here that no one knows for certain if there will be a root method for this. What I've gathered from the minimal time I have spent searching on here today is I might not ever be able to root this thing. Best case is that someday maybe the devs might get a root method figured out, but no one knows if or when that will happen.
My old phone slipped out of my pocket and took a spill off my bicycle at about 20mph onto a paved road. It works fine, but the glass is shattered. I've had this phone for almost a year. I rooted it the day I brought it home from the store. I have spent a lot of time trying roms and kernels and it is set up just how I like it.
I am wondering if it would be worth it to switch out the glass from the replacement phone and put it on my old phone (I'm not sure if this is possible yet, I just thought of it) and send back the replacement phone with the broken glass from the old phone. Or should I wait and see if the devs release a rooting method? I have 14 days to decide before I get charged $500 for not returning the broken phone to the insurance company. What would you do?
I'm not positive, but I think you can still RUU a 2.3 evo back to the 3.70 software and use Unrevoked from there. Good luck
I would send back the insurance replacement (saving you $100) and take it to a repair center and have the screen fixed (which is only $35). Losing root SUCKS.

That's insurance fraud. Asurion will know what phone you send back, and when they find out, they could easily make you pay the full price for it.

Yeah, that's definitely a criminal act. I wouldn't go that route.
Does everybody have some sort of amnesia that they don't remember when the 2.2 OTA came out and a lot of people lost root? Everybody freaked out, they had to wait a couple of weeks (gasp!) and people were all worried there would never be a root method. Bounties were placed, dozens of threads were started asking the same thing. That's what prompted my signature, in fact. There was even a sticky about it, not that those do any good.
Then, there was a root method.
Just be patient. It will happen, maybe the RUU thing will already work for you. Soon, you'll feel silly for being so quick to worry. Heed the words of Tom Petty.
I just got off the phone with the Sprint repair store. They told me that as of February, they no longer fix cracked screens for $35 if the screen has more that two 1 inch cracks. They also told me that once submitted, the insurance claim cannot be undone. I could have it fixed, but it would cost me the total for repair and the $100 for the insurance claim.
I don't remember when 2.2 came out and everyone lost root. I was still sporting my blackberry. This is my first Android phone and it came with 2.2.
I'm just going to return the broken phone and just wait it out. That is what I planned to do in the first place. The threads I read made it seem like there was a good chance that the ota 2.3 was unrootable.

Yup, that's the same experience I had. I went to TWO Sprint stores trying to replace my screen, no dice. So, I filed the claim with Asurion. Just got my phone today, and it's 2.3.3 with 4.22.651.2. Oh well, what can you do?
As everyone is saying, the root method will come out for this phone. Those with the newer phones (you, me, whoever else either just got a new Evo, did the OTA, or got an insurance replacement) will just have to patiently wait. I don't mind...it'll happen!
I was told by the insurance company that I COULD get the new phone, and have Sprint fix it with the new one.
Sprint was going to do it anyway, and replaced the screen on my wife's phone, but they didn't have any more EVO's in stock.
I have another question but didn't want to start another thread....
When I get my new phone, how can I tell if it's new, or refurbished?

New phones will ALWAYS come in the original box with all manuals and accessories. Refurbs will usually come in a plain box with no battery or anything. Refurbs also are required to have a small sticker under the battery with the date it was refurbed.
Also, to be sure, go to the dialer and hit ##786#. Scroll down to Refurbished Date. If it says N/A, then its new. If there is any date listed there, then its a refurb.
