Hey all, I was wondering if you think Sprint would give me a hard time for wanting a replacement evo due to mine having screen separation issues? My phone was not dropped or anything of that nature. No physical damage at all.

I doubt that they would give you much trouble about wanting a replacement under the manufacturer's warranty. You can look forward to receiving a refurb from the sprint warehouse at this point however.

they sent me a refurb initially only a week after release and the g-sensor didnt work. subsequently after a ***** session with assurion i got a complete brand new unopened package. ;-)
I wouldn't mind a refurbished phone as long as there's no separation. Also, would it be an 003 hardware phone? Mine is currently 002 seeing as how I got the phone on release date. And they wouldn't happen to send an already 2.2 phone cuz I want root..>_>

The refurb I got from my sprint store this morning is a hardware version 003 running eclair (2.1). Keep in mind that it will most likely take a few days for them to get a replacement in from the warehouse for you.

I thought assurion only handled insurance claims?
I didn't bother to make a scene about getting a refurb since it was essentially my fault that the phone was bricked to begin with. I was happy to get a working phone without any out of pocket expense. I would have been happier if it was a brand new one obviously. My only complaint about the refurb is that the kickstand has a few scratches on it.

I'm holding off for now hoping that someone will buy it off me so I can get an epic. I got to play with one this morning and I think I'm in love.
Should I go to the sprint store orhave them mail me a new one? I just want to be able to get root back.

I went to a Sprint repair center in the Dallas/FT Worth area this afternoon. I've got two bright spots on the screen itself and some separation at the base of the phone.
They didn't have any phones in stock to replace it, so they gave me the option to have the screen replaced or to replace it when they get one in stock. To prevent losing root, I opted for the screen replacement option.
While discussing the repair, the rep said that the screen replacement part includes the plastic screen cover, the LCD panel and the outside bezel. Fixes both problems.
Oddly, they would do the full replacement if the only issue I had was the separation problem. Apparently they can fix the light leakage problem, but only at another facility. To keep clients happy, they replace the entire phone.
The screen replacement is a 5 minute job, or so I was told.
Long story short, you shouldn't have any problems getting it replaced. The Sprint people are aware of the issue. However, you will get a refurb or new unit and may get a Froyo 2.2 OS build that can't be rooted (yet).
Yeah, I don't think they'd cause a huge problem. Well, I'll give sprint a call tonight and see what they tell me.

So I notice the screen lifting up on the bottom left corner of my phone, and I can feel it moving around when I push on the corners. It's starting to concern me, and well... it shouldn't be happening; I don't appreciate paying for something that seems like it's going to fall apart.
Apparently this is a common problem... which is weird since people give Samsung so much crap.
Anyhoo... I'm past my 30 days (they ran out at the beginning of the month, new Sprint customer as of early Feb '11) what would happen if I took this back to Sprint's store? Would they just give me a new one, or make me go through HTC?
Hardware version 0003.
They should give you a refurb, as you still have warranty for 1 year for hardware defect just like that. Take it to the store-unrooted and all rooting files removed, and you should be fine.

Basically the only thing I'm concerned about is having to send my phone into HTC and having to wait to get one sent to me. You think they'll just switch it out in the store?

Yea, they should just switch it out in the store. or worst case if they don't have one in stock, they'd order a refurb and you'd have it in a day or two, but you won't need to send it to HTC.
Maybe I'll just deal with it.
The problem I have is... I wouldn't accept a refurbished phone. It's just a pet peeve... I paid for a new phone, I want a new phone. I don't like the idea of buying a new one that's defective somehow and getting given a refurbished phone as a replacement. It might not bother some, but I'm just anal like that.
Then again... I haven't talked to Sprint about it, so maybe they would give me a new one.
EDIT: I'll un-root and flash back to stock tomorrow then take it to Sprint on Monday and see what happens.

I got a HTC hero that was a referb, worried that the phone was trash I kept waiting for it to go bad. It never did, in fact I sold it on eBay some time later. Refurbs are hit and miss, you will know within a few days if its a keeper. If not raise hell and get another one!

So the cable between the screen and keyboard that is exposed on the G2 is bent and the touch screen no longer works.
It bent over a period of time. It would always make a click and i thought it was normal. I guess it wore out and bent all the way inward causing the touchscreen to no longer work.
Would repair be covered by HTC warranty?
Since the cable is exposed.. would this be a common problem that affects a small percentage of users? NOPE.. I GUESS IT WAS JUST ME.. I don't know about you guys but that cable being exposed is kind of scary.. so handle with a lot of care!!
Edit: Called HTC and they said my unit is still covered by warranty until about the end of the year so as long as it is not user error, missing void sticker, or unauthorized software.. warranty should cover it.
Would the bent cable be cause of user error? Apparently since the cable is exposed, HTC most likely will decide it is a design flaw or faulty unit because the ribbon cable was never aligned like other G2's i had seen.
BTW.. no T-Mobile warranty so it isn't as easy as going back to T-Mobile and getting it swapped!
I restored to factory settings, Turned S-ON and flashed stock and finally shipped.
Reserved for Final Details!!
Normal use isn't user error. that's only if you treated it improperly.
but if your phone is rooted or has a custom rom, that's going to be a problem
It's stock! COUGH COUGH!!!
Ok well I'm sending it in tomorrow. Will be waiting for HTC's response.
Just got an email that they have sent my G2 back!!!! Repaired or not..
I'm not too sure since i wasn't contacted... meaning either they repaired it because it was still under warranty or they just sent it back unfixed without a single notice! (Which would be really messed up..and horrible Service and also Highly unlikely because they must contact you to charge and authorize a triage fee of 39 dollars to get your unit shipped back unrepaired)
So hopefully HTC fixed it!!! I sent it in on Monday, June 13, 2011. USPS Priority Mail. It got to them yesterday.. because the tracking number said they got it around 9 in the morning. It is now June 16, 2011 and this is what i received in my email! CHECK BELOW
IM HAPPY AS HELL! I was scared/worried that they wouldn't fix it or that they wouldn't return my phone unless i paid the triage fee of $39.
I read so many articles about how crappy and ridiculous HTC Repair Centers are and how long they make you wait..
Until I receive it I will know for sure.
RANT IS OVER....
Here is the email!
Dear Valued Customer,

blah blah blah.. lol well yeah thats enough of my experience. I still haven't received it yet so it is too early to be celebrating.. it should arrive either tomorrow, Monday or the latest Tuesday!

I haven't paid anything.. I guess my unit's warranty covered all the expenses
I didn't even have to pay the TRIAGE FEE ($39.00) WHICH THEY SPECIFICALLY SAID I WOULD BE CHARGED IF THE WARRANTY WAS VOID IN ANYWAY OR IF I REFUSED TO PAY THEIR REPAIR QUOTE AND WANTED MY UNIT SHIPPED BACK TO ME UNREPAIRED!!
Maybe an early celebration, but who knows! Maybe the good guys finally win one! Or maybe their repair centers got a lot better which is very likely since they have been selling devices like hot cakes and most of the stories I read were from the middle of 2010. I guess HTC is stepping their game up this year!
Ill cross my fingers for ya
Thanks!
I called HTC Customer Care today, they told me IT HAD BEEN REPAIRED!!!!! OH YEAH!!
They replaced a rigid flex board? Well thats what the lady on the phone told me lol
That my device was diagnosed and repaired yesterday. Also that it was checked once again for quality assurance (fancy term for "HOLD UP.. did I fix this **** right") and shipped back to me The lady also verified that a tracking number was available! Hurray!! It matched up with the one from my email!
Estimated delivery: Tuesday!! I am so excited!
I can't stand using the nokia 2720 flip phone any longer! Texting is a ***** lol

Yeah, I was afraid of that happening, but hey its better to not have a root for a while than a broken mic whereas the phone is pointless other than texting lol. Just have to sit tight for a bit for a dev to create a root for Gingerbread. Unless HTC puts the unlock bootloader for the G2 with the update. Its a long shot tho...
I will be getting my phone in the mail tomorrow! Hopefully its on froyo and not gingerbread!! Will update post. In the mean time I will be crossing my fingers!

Not at this point... Would require root in order to change the version in the MISC partition, then flash an official zip - kinda self defeating :-(
It came in the mail today. It came with 2.3.3 pre-installed. It seems from searching on here that no one knows for certain if there will be a root method for this. What I've gathered from the minimal time I have spent searching on here today is I might not ever be able to root this thing. Best case is that someday maybe the devs might get a root method figured out, but no one knows if or when that will happen.
My old phone slipped out of my pocket and took a spill off my bicycle at about 20mph onto a paved road. It works fine, but the glass is shattered. I've had this phone for almost a year. I rooted it the day I brought it home from the store. I have spent a lot of time trying roms and kernels and it is set up just how I like it.
I am wondering if it would be worth it to switch out the glass from the replacement phone and put it on my old phone (I'm not sure if this is possible yet, I just thought of it) and send back the replacement phone with the broken glass from the old phone. Or should I wait and see if the devs release a rooting method? I have 14 days to decide before I get charged $500 for not returning the broken phone to the insurance company. What would you do?
I'm not positive, but I think you can still RUU a 2.3 evo back to the 3.70 software and use Unrevoked from there. Good luck
I would send back the insurance replacement (saving you $100) and take it to a repair center and have the screen fixed (which is only $35). Losing root SUCKS.

That's insurance fraud. Asurion will know what phone you send back, and when they find out, they could easily make you pay the full price for it.

Yeah, that's definitely a criminal act. I wouldn't go that route.
Does everybody have some sort of amnesia that they don't remember when the 2.2 OTA came out and a lot of people lost root? Everybody freaked out, they had to wait a couple of weeks (gasp!) and people were all worried there would never be a root method. Bounties were placed, dozens of threads were started asking the same thing. That's what prompted my signature, in fact. There was even a sticky about it, not that those do any good.
Then, there was a root method.
Just be patient. It will happen, maybe the RUU thing will already work for you. Soon, you'll feel silly for being so quick to worry. Heed the words of Tom Petty.
I just got off the phone with the Sprint repair store. They told me that as of February, they no longer fix cracked screens for $35 if the screen has more that two 1 inch cracks. They also told me that once submitted, the insurance claim cannot be undone. I could have it fixed, but it would cost me the total for repair and the $100 for the insurance claim.
I don't remember when 2.2 came out and everyone lost root. I was still sporting my blackberry. This is my first Android phone and it came with 2.2.
I'm just going to return the broken phone and just wait it out. That is what I planned to do in the first place. The threads I read made it seem like there was a good chance that the ota 2.3 was unrootable.

Yup, that's the same experience I had. I went to TWO Sprint stores trying to replace my screen, no dice. So, I filed the claim with Asurion. Just got my phone today, and it's 2.3.3 with 4.22.651.2. Oh well, what can you do?
As everyone is saying, the root method will come out for this phone. Those with the newer phones (you, me, whoever else either just got a new Evo, did the OTA, or got an insurance replacement) will just have to patiently wait. I don't mind...it'll happen!
I was told by the insurance company that I COULD get the new phone, and have Sprint fix it with the new one.
Sprint was going to do it anyway, and replaced the screen on my wife's phone, but they didn't have any more EVO's in stock.
I have another question but didn't want to start another thread....
When I get my new phone, how can I tell if it's new, or refurbished?

New phones will ALWAYS come in the original box with all manuals and accessories. Refurbs will usually come in a plain box with no battery or anything. Refurbs also are required to have a small sticker under the battery with the date it was refurbed.
Also, to be sure, go to the dialer and hit ##786#. Scroll down to Refurbished Date. If it says N/A, then its new. If there is any date listed there, then its a refurb.
hey there,
I had my evo replaced under warranty about 3-4 months ago and opted in to the insurance at that time. since i got it, the camera has been flaky -- sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
My question: If I take the phone in to be replaced, will I get an evo 4g back or a different phone since they are at end of life?
I am ready to go ape**** for a new phone (instead of refurb) as I told them I really didn't want a refurb last time and its had camera problem, the front screen has always had light shining up out of the corners, etc.
would love it if they bumped me to a 3d since they will be getting ice cream sandwich.
thanks.
I've heard that all replacements are 3D's from here on.
You may get real lucky....but I doubt it. I just had my OG EVO stolen in DC right out of my work truck on Wednesday and Sprint put me through to Asurion. Asurion sent me a 0003 refurbished (really fast BTW) and its been bootlooping all weekend when I never had one issue with my 0002. I called them and they sent me another which is waiting for me @ home as we speak. I guess what I'm trying to say is, since your EVO is defective, they might swap it @ store but will prob be a refurb. Good luck.
via EVO.
They may not have any more new og evo. They have a crap load if refurbished ones. So unless they room out of refurbished, you wouldn't get a 3vo unless you are lucky.
You need to have it replaced 4 times in 6 months to get a different phone. they still have plenty of Evo4G's. They even have Heros left still.
Yeah we just did an insurance claim for my wifes evo last week. She got another EVO. She had the white one and got a black one this time. With as many evos that have been sold and sent in for insurance claim, I'm sure they will have plenty to go around for quite a while
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
You will get a refurb evo, they have plenty of them. You will not get an evo 3d, the two phones are way different to be offering them as a replacement.
You guys are totally wrong. I checked on Asurion today, and the website said that the replacement for my EVO would be a 3D. I'm not switching, but you can get a 3D if you're lucky.

It is a definitive upgrade. MP count may be lower but I've seen comparisons with the 3D offering better pics.
The only reason it wouldn't be considered an "equal replacement" is because its actually an upgrade.

When you check it online, does it tell you what kind of replacement you'll be getting before they lock you in? for example, if it says I'd be getting an OG, do I have 30 days to complete the claim, or is it an incomplete claim? Can I just keep checking it until it says 3vo? Also, what happened to billing the deductible to my account? Back in the day they would allow the deductible to be billed, but now they only take it direct over the phone.

No, it doesn't tell you. You can call Asurion and ask, but again, they have plenty of OG evo's last time I checked. And no, you cannot just "keep checking" until they give you a 3d. Insurance is NOT an upgrade program, it's a replacement program.

Last week on Wednesday i lost my white OG EVO, went through Asurion online and filed a claim, 12 hours later i got a new 0004 black OG EVO even though in the email notification i got it said that my order was going to take couple of days because my phone wasnt in stock.
Both my father in law and my wife got their OG Evos replaced with 3D's. I was going to claim insurance also and was told by asurion that i would be getting a 3d. I dont know why they are giving them to some and not others.
You can start a claim online and it will tell what they are replacing your phone with. If its not a 3d then just exit and nothing happens.

Nothing you can do about it now, your warranty is over and you can only add insurance during the first 30 days of the phone. Every once in a while Sprint/Asuiron will do an open enrollment, allowing anyone to get insurance, but I believe they just had one a few months ago, so probably not again for a while.
Edit: actually, since you cant get it replaced, have you tried a factory reset?
Hey guys, I posted a thread last week of a problem I had with my stock unrooted gnex. The problem was that everytime I went to the settings, the settings app would crash and wouldn't let me press "more" in order to access mobile network modes etc.
I rooted it and flashed a couple of roms and the issue kept returning. I un-rooted it this morning and reflashed via odin the latest stock FD02 tar thinking the issue would be gone since everything was going to be wiped. The issue came back again so I went to the sprint store (thank god for TEP) and the techs were acting like it wasnt a big deal. They reset the phone 4 times (the tech did it in fornt of me) and the issue was still there.
So 1 and a half hour later, the manager comes out and tells me she ordered me a new phone (probably a refurb but who cares at this point ) and it would arrive on thursday.
the tech started joking around with me at the end saying that if I got a bad gnex from the factory, that he would give me a NIB GSIII. I hope thats the case haha But I still love my Gnex and its peppy updates and hate touch wiz to death.
Interesting thanks for sharing bud

I can say from experience, since I had an evo 4g before the nexus and my wife has an iphone 4s. We have gone through TEP with both devices.
Lets start with the Evo.
I was getting a lot of dropped calls, the speakers were worn out sounding poorly, it started turning on and off by itself. Went to sprint, the techs diagnosed that there was no water damage or accident damage so they didn't ask for the deductible and ordered me a phone. Replacement arrived in a generic white sprint box, the tech used the same battery I had and gave me a working phone (no scratches, dings or anything looked brand new)
My wifes iphone 4s
The bluetooth wasn't holding a connection to her cars bluetooth system or any bluetooth device at all. The techs diagnosed it and gave her the same treatment. The phone came in a generic box looking new and worked fine.
The story behind whether you ACTUALLY get a refurb or a truly new phone is this.
When the rep places the phone order the system tells him if there are any refurbished units at their warehouse. When there are none the warehouse itself sends a totally new not refurbished phone in the same generic box.
How do you know if you got a new phone or a refurb? Theres no way in my experience (I've had to order around 4 phones in the past 5 years with TEP and they have always worked great and looked new)
If you file a claim with asurion (theft, accidental damage or water damage) they send you a brand new phone after paying the $100 deductible.(happened with 1 phone that I dropped and cracked the screen)
interesting. what i was mostly wondering about was the screen on the gnex. i remember when i had the nexus 4g, people that went through tep said that the screen was replaced with a different one. it wasnt oled, or whatever the original screen was.
I had the issue when I flashed cm9 and paranoid android Roms. But the issue was only the roms

Interesting, It could be a temporary outage of the parts.
I know for certain that for the iphones, the refurbish process is done by apple
So I would think that samsung is responsible for supplying sprints refurb units. Since the screen is made by Samsung themselves they should focus on putting the right screens.
and thursday can't come fast enough My gnex is now getting delayed texts. A lot of people text me, like once an hour the phone is ringing all of the messages that were sent to me at once during that period of time.
