I just noticed there is an update for Kies. Currently downloading version 1.5.1.0074.45 through Kies update. Hopefully this will add proper support for Galaxy S
Galaxy S is already supported.

According to Samsung the current version of Kies does not fully support Galaxy S?
Edit: Just noticed the reply above
This version and older versions are also available from samfirmware.com
Would be better if Samsung could remove all the bloatware from Kies. An application with 200+ MB in size that takes 45 seconds to launch is just unacceptable, when all it does is sync your PIM info, media files and upgrade firmware.

I agree it's severe bloatware, but 45 seconds to launch? It takes 3 - 5 seconds at the most here

Yeah it took over 15 minutes here. Samsungs update server is very poor indeed. Worth it though, connecting the phone seems much more reliable and is a little quicker now.
I am so glad we don't have to rely on Kies for anything - the program almost makes me long for the days of Nokia PC Suite!

Why should the average user take the risk?
The "Average" user shouldn't in my view. Original firmware is pretty stable so there's no immediate need for custom ROMS or removal of shipped apps.

For example here in Finland you need to root your Android to get Android Market for example..
It is possible to set the higher priority of some tasks? Like LauncherPro. It would react more responsible when there are another apps running with high cpu usage.
also i would like to set the priority to low of a task which installs applications from market, so the phone is more usable.
Would it be possible?

So does Market enabler work on the i9000?
ME works like a charm
What if I root my phone and samsung releases a new firmware.
Can I update the firmware without any issues, and will I still have root after such an upgrade?
If you gained Root with Flashing the csc file from Leshak, you simply dont flash the csc file of the new firmware and you will still have root.

The way Samsung handles updates is they are released in odin packages. To install these roms that are in these odins packages you must have the odin program that will install it onto your phone. The problem is that this will wipe out all your settings and apps on your phone. You could try using a backup and for your apps and settings but they don't always work when your upgrading.
Also in regards to the initial question remember you wont have wifi-tether or a huge choice of custom roms (no sense roms, no early Froyo roms). Those two reasons alone have drawn me away from Samsung. I would rather get a HTC Aria then this locked down phone.

Still I really love this phone, think I'll get it anyway. Little bit sad that we cannot get custom roms, are you 100% sure of this?
No I said you won't get a huge choice of custom roms. Every Rom will be based off of what Samsung releases

What? That doesn't make sense. There are already custom roms for the galaxy s. And they are in the form of an update.zip
It looks like samsung has released a real customizable device, easily rooted and a recovery that allows any update.zip without checking for checksums..

No you can use launcherpro just fine without rooting the phone BUT you won't be able to connect to Kies while launcherpro is set as default. So just use a program like home switcher to temporarily set it back to samsungs launcher if you need to connect to Kies.
Things are getting a tad tight on internal memory so I have been taking a good close look at what is chewing up storage.
Flash Update from Market
This used 10MB in it's own right yet claims to be only an update!
So if memory serves, 2.2 has flash out of the box. So without this 10MB update, I still get flash.
Don't I???
In which case, what does this 10MB of space hog give me?

Oh, you're being serious?
It obviously won't be all the security update. As it is, Flash is 12mb, on the Market its 5mb. It's just data etc just like every other app.
Fair enough if uninstalling the update stays at 5 or whatever mb forever, but chances are, it'll go back to 12.

Kind of.
Whilst I have no time for Apple, I have little time for Adobe either.
Products such as Photoshop etc are great
Acrobat and Air are the total opposite.
Bloated and full of of security holes and really heavy for the host and the network (flash is just as bad). Sounds very much like another company we all love to hate (MS?) doesn't it

That is a common misconception. Android 2.2 does NOT deliver flash out of the box. It just comes with a browser that can use plugins, like flash.
If you are using a sense rom (like the official one), the browser is enhanced by HTC with flash lite, which (as the name suggests) is not a full flash implemantation. Sure you get some flash, but things like youtube in the browser just won't work with that.
€: Did not know htc included it in the update. There is always something new to learn
2.2 has full Flash 10.1 for mobile in it, 2.1 had Flash Lite
I don't think you need this update... I haven't installed it, just using the Flash 10.1 that came with the Froyo update.
I think the security update was way more important for windows users, it was released at the same time if I remember correctly.
Hi all,
seriuously I think the worst part of this phone is the memory. With only 3 apps installed (Whatsapp, Instagram BETA and a simple To-Do-List app) my memory is constantly full. It gets so bad sometimes that the phone only shows a black screen and the clock like this.
With being able to install apps (and hopefully the app data) on the SD-card the phone would be really great again.
Does anyone know how the chances of getting 8.1 for this old phone are?
Why don`t you regularly keep fresh installations from the aps and games on your sd card? That`s how you will gain a lot of memory consumption time.
For the 8.1 update i think that we will not feel a lot performance difference cause the phone at this parent state is not so responsive like his windows phone "brothers" and "sisters" out there but surely we will get some more better options on it.
Im am particularly afraid of that "Cortana" database that they mention.I think if that thing is stored on the phone storage again it could possibly be our new space invader but let us see first, then we will talk.

Because that's not the way a teenage girl (my GF's little sister) uses her low end smartphone. It keeps blacking out and not opening apps (e.g. just black sceen after tapping on the whatsapp tile). Resetting the phone frees the storage, but after some weeks it's the same all over again. Memory management seems to be totally absent on this thing. And it's so annoying to see the ~12GB free on the microSD-card.
I do not expect great performance on a sub-200$ phone. In fact, I think it's a great and beautiful phone. But I expect it to be able to handle 3(!) installed apps and their data on its own. You really shouldn't have to tinker with it to enable such basic usability.
And that"s where I hope the update will fix the phone. But doesn't matter anyway now, she'll get an iPhone 3gs, since at least that works, and she won't take any more smartphone-related advice from me after this fiasco

Installed WP8.1 today on my HTC 8S via the Preview for Developers app.
First impressions are it's very slick and my phone appears to run quicker.
I needed 704.05 free space on my phone to install WP8.1. Therefore I had to uninstall most of my apps and a couple of games.
However when reinstalling them they can now be installed to the SD card!!
nice to hear! that saving apps to SD card would solve the HUGE memory problem im waiting forward to the official release !! Awesome !

I am downloading an AT&T OTA right now. It is reported to be the NK3 update. So far no details, but it is bigger than the other updates being reported by other carriers, but it could be a combination of other updates.
It is showing as 223.71 MB
My Note 4 is a true AT&T phone, not an international or T-Mo version.
More as I get it, but its DL'ing kinda slow. (might be the netflix movie I am watching on another device on my network..oops!)

Note... I had to change the date in my settings to trigger the update. I checked for an update late yesterday, and it only lets you try once every 24 hours.
Its installing now... it seems to stick a few times (55% seemed to be there forever) but it is moving on. Looks like about 5+ minutes of install time after download.

I had seen a possible update from a forum post on another site. ... so I forced the check for update.
It just finished and there is no change log associated with it. I'll keep playing with it and let you know what I find. The recent apps button seems slightly faster, but I might be imagining it.
Other updates (the international devices) have indicated battery performance improvements, and reduced lag on the recent apps button. Not sure what else. But those updates were smaller in size even combined.
Just got and installed the update...unfortunately no change log of any sort. Phone seems a bit more responsive after bit otherwise no changes I have noticed yet.
Also included the gear vr software
With these updates in the works someone should be uploading new stock images and associated files, no? There may be some exploit for root introduced that was not present in the earlier version.

And I know they're just coming in, just something to keep in mind. Someone with more skill/experience may want to chime in.
Stumbled on a app DSMLawmo that I hadn't seen before... or maybe it was there and I missed it.
But also the Gear VR Apps are now installed... I KNOW they are new.
IMS Settings and IMSLogger+... are these new. They look it.
(those apps are not in the app drawer, but under the app manager "all" tab)
In addition there is an option to backup your SMS's on AT&T's cloud .. is that new? Or am I looking too hard.
Did we have evernote installed before? It looks like it is baked in as bloatware now.
I really hope this is going to fix my horrible battery life...
"horrible battery life" is a matter of opinion and circumstances. It might make it better, but it can't fix things that it isn't causing.

Be careful because disabling something without being sure what it is first might start a FC loop and the same can happen when updating the firmware (OTA or full firmware)!
I used to use Debloater when I had my Note 5 and several times I got weird FC loops.
I decided then to disable apps only from the App Manager when available.

I can go through the basic things but there are some thing I dont know much about but had no problems when I disabled. This includes all the garbage that runs in the background to send data
