When attempting to make a selection in clockwork mod with the power button it essentially makes the screen go dark like it is locking the screen. This may be a stupid quest but is there another button for selecting options such as wipe and apply updates from sd. I know on some devices it is the trackball but I have no clue what it is on the evo.
I've seen this "feature" before. Unfortunately I don't recall how to get out of that mode. There's aparently a way to turn that on. Iirc, I got out of it by being on the top setting, vol up, then power. I was just pressing stuff at that point, so I could be wrong. On the upside, you can't really select something you don't want in that state. Lol

Is the defy the same as the cliq 2 because I'm trying to get into the recovery by hitting the power button and the volume down button but its not working
They are different devices and as far as I know you have to slide the keyboard open and hold something down at boot to get into the recovery mode. There is some info on it over at m3 if you want to take a look.
Hold x key and power

Gotta love reviving old threads. I also forgot to mention I use a program called anreboot and it has options for power off reboot system and reboot recovery.

Hey everybody, I'm using CM7 and occasionally when I press the power button to wake my device up from sleeping, it only lights up the 4 capacitive buttons while the screen remains black. If I fiddle with it some, it eventually turns on but it's getting more and more frequent and annoying. If you have any redirects to a thread (I couldn't find one for the life of me) or suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
I had the same issue. CM7 rc1. I went back to CM 6.1.2 for the time being.

Do you follow the thread at all? This is discussed on about half the pages. It's because you have both the CRT screen on/off animations set and you are overclocked above around 1.2ghz. Either ease up on the oc, or turn off the animations for the screen. No problem with the ROM or your phone.

Actually I fixed the problem by turning the wifi off. SetCPU is set under 1GHz.

This problem is caused by too high of an overclock.

why not try trackball wake?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I agree, I can't see my self not using the track pad wake method. I'm oc to just over 1ghz(ondemand) & have no problems waking up my phone with the screen on & off animations. I prefer CPU tuner over setcpu anyday.

My g2 with cm7 rc1 has similar symptoms, where when the power button is pressed the capacitive buttons light up, and the back lighting on the screen is noticeable, but nothing more. I have tried a battery pull, a soft reboot, and still the screen does not wake up. I had the oc at 1100 before this happened. Any ideas on how I can get the screen back on in order to change the settings? Thanks
update: The screen still does not come on, but I received a phone call and was able to answer it by sliding my finger across the screen in the general area where you normally swipe to answer, and then I ended the call by tapping where the end icon usually sits. So the touch screen is working, but there are no visuals.
Restore your Nandroid and set it differently next time.

Is there a method to restore my nandroid without being able to use the screen? Can i do it over ADB?

Do a battery pull. Put the battery back in. Hold the volume down button and then press and hold the power button. That'll put you to a screen that has a bunch of text on it. (Let go of the buttons if you're still holding them) Hit the volume down button once. Should highlight "recovery" then hit the power button to select. It'll boot into recovery now. Wipe data, then wipe cache, then wipe dalvik/cache (under advanced) then backup & restore, and select your nandroid. Once done, hit the back arrow, then select reboot
Now, if the screen doesn't even turn on when you do the batt pull, allowing you to see anything at call, sorry LOL.

That's good advice, but wanted to let you know it is unnecessary to do the wipe data/cache/dalvik cache before you restore a nandroid backup. Part of the restore process does a complete wipe automatically before it restores, so doing it beforehand is superfluous.
I have never heard of anyone's screen issue persisting through a reboot. That would drive me nuts. Make sure you never set SetCPU to 'Set on boot' until you are sure your governing and secondary profiles are stable with the kernal you are running on your device.

I know, but I like to make sure anyway. At least I know for my own sanity that it's definitely wiped lol.
Thank you all for the input, but the screen never comes on at all, even in the bootloader or recovery.
I've installed the Power Off and Lock App and use it via a shortcut.
The 4.2 Release notes state:
[BONUS] option for 15 custom screen off animations (via app) mapped to power button*
To me, this reads that the screen off animation can be tied directly to pressing the power button. I've been unable to get any screen off animation from pressing the power button, only from setting up a shortcut and selecting that.
Is this the way the app is intended to be used, or am I missing something to tie the behavior the power button itself?
EDIT:
I suspect this isn't working for me because I added Signalbars_6.zip to give me 6 signal bars instead of 4. This is implemented in services.jar, where, I believe, the hook to the power button is also implemented. I'll try to confirm by re-applying SR42 patch upgrade to see if I go back to 4 bars, and gain access to the power button.
RE-EDIT:
Confirmed - reapplied SR42 upgrade patch... back to 4 bars and Power Off App now works from power button. Thanks to those who replied
It works fine for me and I'm on SR4.2. Press power button to turn the screen off like I always do, and it does the animation then turns it off. Not sure if he modified something to redirect it to use the powerbutton function or what.
You have to download and install and configure this app http://market.android.com/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Then go into settings / skyraider settings / user interface and check the screen off animations box. then when you press the power button it calls that app and uses the theme you select in the app

I've done all this and it refuses to work from the power button; only the shortcut. I upgraded to 4.2 directly from 4.1 using the upgrade patch rather than the full 4.2 install. Could this be the difference? Maybe the hook didn't make it into the upgrade patch? Which route did you use to get to SR 4.2 ?

How did you get it to work with 6 signal bars?
My upgrade steps were:
1. Upgrade SR4.0 (with 6 signal bars) to SR4.1
2. Upgrade SR4.1 to SR4.2 with upgrade patch (lost 6 bars, went to 4)
3. Re-applied Signalbars_6.zip (from SR4.0 mods) to get 6 bars, lost power off capability
4. Re-applied SR4.2 upgrade patch, lost 6 bars - went to 4, gained power off capability
What path did you use to get to SR4.2 with 6 bars and a working power off capability?
Use my 6 bar mod in my themes
Is there a way to remove the slide unlock feature on touchwiz roms?
There are several applications from the play store that work ... kinda.
The slide unlock goes away, but when the home button is pressed (when screen is off) the device goes to the home screen instead the recent open application.
On most of the aosp roms if you wake the device using the home button the last open application stays in the foreground.

Are you trying to remove a lock screen altogether? Under the lock screen settings, you can set it to "none".
