[Q] Too scared to root .... - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

... but you guys might just push me over the edge.
I have a UK Orange branded AMOLED Desire 2.1-update1.
I would like to confirm what HBOOT I have - I get that by 'Power + Vol down' Fastboot menu? I've not gone here yet 'cos I don't know how to safely exit this menu. Will there be a "Normal Boot" option, do I power down the phone, by button or by battery extraction?
The quickest, and safest, way to me seems to be UnRevoked 3. As soon as I have done this and claimed my rightful root access I would then plan to take a nandroid backup. How will I know this backup is good, will there be some checksum to refer to?
Once armed with this nandroid backup, am I right in thinking I can ALWAYS return to this pure rooted state regardless of what I do next - even if I change the 'radio' version in some fit of madness?
I've spent the last 6 weeks waiting on the Orange OTA update to 2.2, but I know realise this update will rob me of the chance of easy rooting. My fear now is that it will be released before I've plucked up enough courage to root anyway. Knowing the answers to these questions should set me straight.

Hold down Vol-down and press power to get into HBOOT - you'll then see the version at the top...
To reboot, either remove the battery OR press power once to get to FASTBOOT and there's an option to power down...doesn't matter what you do really
Having said that, there's a new thread which apparently roots ANY HBOOT version to generic 2.1. Read this:

[Q] HTC Desire screen not working ? SLCD BRICKED ?!

Somehow my HTC Desire's screen is not working.
It might be an SLCD brick but I haven't downgraded or anything of that sort, and I rooted my phone successfully a while back.
This started happening when I installed an AOSP Defrost rom onto it. Do they not work with SLCD's ? I'm not sure. But it worked for a while after installation. But a couple hours later, the phone wouldn't wake up.
Everything but the screen works. It seems that I can power it on, and unlock it on the opening screen. It vibrates when powering on and unlocking. I figure if that's the case then I can probably go into recovery or fastboot.
Unfortunately I don't have a goldcard. Nor do I know how to make a gold card. But I really do not want to resort to that. As well it is a Telus model, so until someone releases an RUU for that, I'm out of luck.
Since my phone is black and I can't see what I'm doing. Can someone give me a step by step button procedure on how I can restore my nandroid backup? As said before I have a amon ra recovery and I'm hoping that this can still work.
On a side note, how is Telus on exchanging your broken phone. It's nearly impossible to tell that my phone is rooted because the screen is black. But I no longer have the 30 day warranty so I'm not entirely sure.
Anyways I hope you guys can help me out!
Anyone ?
(Sorry I really hate to bump)
Come on guys, I'm really desperate here
I don't use AmonRa personally, so I wouldn't be able to give you a step-by-step advice =/.
First thing you should try to do is see if you can actually get into recovery, do this by pushing Volume Down + Power to boot up the device, then wait about a minute or two and push volume down, then power button. This SHOULD get you into recovery if you can... you can test it by hooking it up to your computer and seeing if you can toggle the USB mount for the SD Card.
Going from the picture in this thread: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721792), just push volume down once then the trackball button. If that works, you can put a stock SCLD-compatible ROM onto the SD Card and use the flash from zip option (appears to be 4th item in the menu, but whatever steps are required after that I'm not sure on their positions as I'm using Clockworkmod =/).
Or if you remember the menu options that are available afterwards, try going through the backup/restore menu (3rd item) to try and restore from your nandroid backup.
Hope that somewhat helps =S.

Thanks for the suggestions but i still couldn't do it. It's much harder cause you navigate up and down with the track ball instead of the vol up+down in amon ra.
On another note, I went to Telus today, and the only thing I can do, is send it to the service center and have them take a look at it. If they find out that it's rooted then I'm screwed.
I decided to take my chances with the goldcard and if that doesn't work I'll send it and try my luck.
Does anyone have anymore suggestions, feedback on what I should do :S. It's been a week and I have no replacement phone

I tried flashing a RUU but still no luck with the screen issue, however the flash said it was successful, does that mean that i have a stock ROM now, if so it should still be under manufacturer warranty (within 12 months) is this correct?
thanks

[Q] Evo w/ Red Triangle, will not respond to anything!

Please please please help me out. Yes I am a noob. So I just got the Evo from Sprint 2 days ago. I began trying to root it using this guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496. I followed every step exactly and when it got to the part where it was to load pc36img I said yes to the update. [1] BOOTLOADER said bypassed, [2] Radio_v2 failed and the rest was ok, however "partition update failed". I rebooted, triangle. Now, I REALLY need you guys' help. It's a very expensive phone and I need to know what to do. I googled but nothing helped as I know virtually nothing about this phone. I don't know what to do. I went back to the bootloader (I take the battery out every time and hold volume down and hit power) and every time it goes ahead and loads the pc36img. I say no to the update and I hit recovery but that just rebooted and i got back to the phone with a red triangle exclamation mark. I'm asking you, what can I do to recover to stock? I don't even care about rooting anymore now, I just want to be able to use the phone. Also, idk how to gain access to the SD card from here. Literally all I can access is the bootloader but even that is forced on the pc36img at first. Please help, and thank you.
hit your power and vol down. Please tell me your HBOOT version. (@ the Green/white screen) and if it says S-ON or S-Off
hboot- 2.02.0000 S-ON
Posting from a friends house its, killer1one1
ok since your not rooted do this.
NOTE: This will erase all data on the phone. (Will not erase data on the SDCard)
1) Download the stock PC36IMG_3.30.zip file from here http://www.multiupload.com/01KD54FGAX rename it to PC36IMG.zip (EXACTLY LIKE THAT). Copy it to the root of your sdcard & overwrite existing one.
2) Power your phone off. Power the Phone back on into the boot loader by holding power and vol-down until your presented with the HBOOT white screen. It will read the pc36img.zip and ask you if you want to update. Say yes. Then it will ask if you want to reboot, Press yes.
3) you will be on a HTC/Sprint screen for a few mins and it should work. make sure to update the software within phone and don't try to root again hahahah j/k
killer1one1 here; Thank you so much, I ran that package and it's on 2.2, and it won't find any more recent update (not that it should, but you said "make sure to update the software within phone") but it looks good and runs even better
i meant upgrade your HTC software Menu>Settings>System Updates>HTC Software Update. And also do all the updates within that area PRL/profile etc......... But glad your happy Enjoy!
ok, I'm applying those updates now. Again, thank you very much, I know a lot more about my phone now haha
Total noob. I followed the old guide(i know it is old now) with a new 3.3 evo and got the red triangle of death. I tried what was stated in this post and replaced the PC36IMG.zip file with the stock one and it did not work. I can now get into HBOOT USB or any of the other HBOOT screens, but it will not recover. I have now tried to take off all of the unrevoked and anything i changed from the SD card and no luck. Can someone please help me recover my evo please?
Command prompts for recovery?
Is there an updated IMG file location out there somewhere? I ran into a similar thing tonight. Only difference is I have:
S-Off
Hboot-0.79.000
if your phone is stock and you hold vol down and power, wait till it get to bootloader screen, go to recovery, hit power button, you will see the red triangle, hold volume up and hit the power button...and a menu should pop up

[Q] Root gone wrong, my screen is blank [non branded HTC Desire]

Hey guys!
Now this happened for some time ago because i switched phone to my blackberry in anger over the brick of the Desire, and i can't remember exactly this happened!
I think i rooted it and then the screen suddently went blank when i started it.
Now i searched the web for looooong time, and also some threads in here, to find my golden answer - but nothing hat helped yet. But i got a wierd feeling in my stomach that i'm doing something wrong.
So since i can't do it myself i decided to wright to you, and hope that helps!
My HTC Desire is not branded.- at least im pretty sure it isn't!! There is no place it's physically branded. And it's bought in Denmark, and i don't think we've got branded phones here as in UK and USA
I've tried this guide because i saw some people had succes with it:
QUOTE''
You don't need to root or do anything unusual in order to apply the FroYo update, you only need that for custom recovery. It's not impossible to do with a broken screen, just do this:
1. Make sure the update.zip file is on your goldcard and correctly named.
2. Take the battery out first to ensure the phone is powered off. Then hold vol down and press the power button, and hold vol down for about 5 seconds. That will get you into the bootloader even though you can't see it.
3. Press vol down once. This will select recovery.
4. Press the power button once. This will start the recovery. The phone will vibrate briefly.
5. Wait 20 seconds or so. Then press vol up and the power button and wait a few seconds. You'll now be in system recovery.
6. Press vol down once to select 'apply sdcard:update.zip'.
7. Press the power button once to start the recovery.'' QUOTE END.
But nothing happens.
And i also tried Unrevoked3, but neither did that helped, it got stock at ''Waiting for root... (safe to restart if this doesn't work)''
I would really appreciate if you would take your time to help me today! Because i really want my HTC Desire back, because it is a really sweet phone after all
I know you guys are much more wiser to this than me, so i hope you got at magical form to solve this out.
So... when you boot holding the vol down key what happens?
Well the tricky part about it is that i can't see anything! But if i go into boot (atleast i think i do) i can push VOL- and then Power button, and then it vibrates briefly, so i think it's going in to recovery.
Right, try this...
Download this RUU (2.29.405.5):
http://www.multiupload.com/LEJCW182AH
Turn the phone off (remove the battery to be sure) and turn it on holding the BACK button. Hold back for about 5-10 seconds to be sure you're in FASTBOOT. Connect to the PC and assuming the drivers are installed wait a further 20 seconds
Then run the RUU. If you're unbranded it will install and should get you back up and running. If it completes and you still can't see anything the screen is dead and will need replacing
So what happens when you turn it on normally, vibrates and then you can't see anything? Maybe try this thread.
@EddyOS
Thank you!
I'm going to try the FASTBOOT right now! - i have slow internet, so i assume it's gonna take while to download the RUU - but i'll response the results here as quick as i can.
@TheGhost1233
Nothing happens, but i can see that there is light in the screen, because it turns slightly light-darker.
Also when i powered up the phone i can lock it up with my fingers and still use my touch, so it's not the ''touch'' function that there is broken.
touch is seperate to the screen anyway, lets hope its not a hardware fault and can be fixed! post your results
I'm trying with another RUU i have - while im downloading the on you've linked to - 8RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8_Radio_32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed is the one i'm trying with right now.
When i start the desire with holder down Volume (DOWN) and Power button for 5 seconds, and then plug the phone into USB there comes an jingle on my computer(which always appears when connecting any phone) but then it wont find more.
I can't see the device in ''My computer'' ?
And i get the ERROR [170] Connecting Error?
That's an old RUU so use the one I linked to
This is what i'm doing now:
Volume- and power in 5 seconds.
Plug the USB cable to the phone. (Now i can hear ''dy-dy'' from my computer, which means that my computer has detected a hardware. BUT i can't find the phone's SD Card in ''My computer'' - should i could do this?
But in my Applications i can find it under ''Special applications'' - i think i will translate i too - as ''Android 1.0''.
Now i run the RUU which you've linked to, but then i geat Connectin Error 170.
hmm?
You should be holding BACK, not volume down, when you turn it on as you need to be in FASTBOOT not HBOOT to run an RUU
Lol okay, i feel like a morron now, sorry for not have seen this.
But i still get the error 170, usb connection error!
Do i need to install HTC Sync? I've uninstalled it for the sake of unrevoked3.
And is there another way to do this? Over the phone exclusively maybe - if my USB connection fails all the time.
No you don't need HTC Sync. Sounds like you've USB-bricked the phone. You could try extracting out the PB99IMG.zip from the RUU and flash it that way but as you can't see what you're doing it's hard
And how can i see which HBOOT i got? Just want to check regarding to this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748498
Haven't a clue, doens't matter as the RUU I posted is the newest one so will work regardless
Oh, okay.
Well i'm trying to flash PB99IMG now. I'm just hoping im doing it right allthough i can't see anything.
I'm doing as following: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucBs9RVGL0w
You don't flash it like a custom ROM. You get the PB99IMG.zip from the ROM, copy it to the root of the SD card and then turn on into HBOOT. The phone will then find it and ask if you want to flash it - say yes and that's it!
Oh okay. Just from the ROM you've linked to me?
And can you remember how to say yes, just power button?
Normally it says press up for to continue but I can't remember off the top of my head
EDIT: Yep, volume up to start
Thanks mate, i'll keep on trying various of thing.

Been Given 4 locked wildfires!! Where do I go??

Ok, I have been given 4 HTC wildfires from a company that has gone into administration.
The issue I have is that all four have a numeric password lock and they have all had attempts made to access them which has resulted in them being completley locked.
My plan was to root all 4 and sell them on, but I am now stuck.
Can't root using reflash as I can't set to USB debugging and when I try to boot into recovery I get the below screen.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
HBOOT Version is 0.80.0007 if that makes any difference??
1. This is HTC Wildfire S Forum
2. Go into HBOOT (Remove battery, wait 1 min, insert battery, press power and vol-)
3. Do a factory reset
If that does not solve your issue:
go to htcdev and unlock your bootloader.
then flash the complete phone new
The issue I have is that the phones are locked so I have no way of changing settings to allow USB debugging - I need a way to get around this issue - Then I'm sure either the HTC dev fix or another fix will work.
Pulling the battery makes no difference.
Admins - Can this be moved to the correct forum please??
This is my device wrong forum bud, but you may be in luck. Are all of the phones on the 0.80 bootloader ? If they are go into bootloader like theq86 said, download the hboot. 1.01.0001 ruu from the HTC wildfire (buzz) forums for running revolutionary. Run the ruu in hboot mode and it should force the update then run the revolutionary program to s-off. Then install clockwork mod and root

This should have all you need
sent from my android powered beast!
For going into the bootloader you need no usb debugging.
you can just go inside and chose factory reset.
For htcdev you also need no USB Debugging. Everything is made via the bootloader.
the password lock of android does not lock the bootloader.
Edit: For going into bootloader
Remove battery, wait 1 min, insert battery, press Vol- (Vol down) HOLD it and then press power button.

If he is going to ruu he is definitely better of going for revolutionary keeps the warrantys, allowing his bootloaders are all below hboot 1.01.001, if not he may have issues ...
Also a q to the op, how did you check the hboot without being in the bootloader? ?? Because with the lock on you can't access the rom?
sent from my android powered beast!
OK.....
The bootloader is not locked!! I have never said it is. Some one has made over 30 attempts on the lock screen!!
When I boot by holding down power and volume it tells me that HBOOT v is 0.80.0007. I have no option on this menu to do a factory reset, but if I select, recovery, I get the screen in the 1st pic.
I can not use the HTC dev tool as when I run the RUU it tells me the phone software is out of date and I need to perform an OTA update.
Unrevoked will not see my phone even though it's connected and the Android platform drivers are installed in device manager
Revolutionary will not work as my bootloader is out of date, and I'm struggling to upgrade it as I can't switch USB debugging on (Although I'm not sure I need to)
Thanks both for your help so far....anything else and I'm listening.
That leaves you with a few things
1)Trying using HTC Supertool......connect your phone via fastboot in the bootloader
2)Try using JTAG(wont recommend if you dont know what it is)
3)Try updating your rom by taking out "rom.zip" from the RUU and flashing this "rom.zip" via HBOOT

ok download this and place this zip file on the root of your sdcard. then boot into bootloader, it should ask you to push volume up to update. do that and you should be on hboot 1.01.001 and ready for revolutionary. repeat this for all 4 phones. then come back, hit the thanks button and tell us how good we are

If you have nothing constructive to offer, keep your comments to yourself.
These are from a company that went into administration and have been sat in the office desk for a month. I was asked to help uninstall the office servers and networks.
The administrator let me have the phones in Lieu of payment - so they were not exactly free, but will cost me £20 when I get my payment back.
When you go into recovery you get the phone with a red triangle, right? Press vol up +power to see the options. One of them should be wipe data/factory reset

HTC One M8: Android is upgrading...

I just got the latest OTA from HTC. My phone is unlocked with stock image, unrooted and never tampered with. Its been on the Android is upgrading... screen for around 2 hours. Its already gone through and done the app optimisation and rebooted after that into this situation. I'm not really sure what to from here. Do I just leave it running overnight? The phone is running quite hot with the screen permanently on. It hasn't frozen fully, the spinning circle/line is still going. Holding down the buttons does nothing. Its like I'll have to let the battery run down...anyone have any advice
That's not a good sign ...
Don't leave it like that ... press & hold both power & vol up button until it turns black, remove both buttons and quickly press & hold vol down button only.
This will get you to hboot.
Understand that the device is bootloader unlocked but what o you mean by unrooted ?
Was it rooted before and you unrooted it using the unroot function in SuperSU app ?
Note - OTA need a clean non-rooted system image to proceed successfully. If it was rooted and unrooted, some binary already changed then it get stuck while booting.
Post fastboot getvar all result without serial & imei no, if it is not hardware problem then most probably that can be fixed with RUU or non-rooted nandroid backup or signed firmware.

Thanks I'll give that a crack. Unrooted as in I've never tried to root it or anything like that. The phone is just how it came stock retail
Actually just as I went to hit power then it rebooted and finished updating....far out that took a long time. Your phone been upgraded to version 6.24.710.1. Was probably close to 3 hours for the update to finish.
I see ... you have an Australia region device. (that's why you have .au in your username )
It seems that's another update from the last 6.12.710.4. I need to get this for my backup collection later.
