Hi, everybody I am new to this forum thought I'd introduce myself and get answers to a few questions,which I've been searching for.
I'm from Pakistan, previously I had an iphone 2g I was into the whole jailbreaking stuff for that too.
I recently bought a slightly used htc desire. Firstly it didn't come with a 4gb memory card and it is on firmware 2.1update-1. It has no physical branding on it but in the scenes menu it has a vodafone scene and its firmware is 1.19.161.5 CL171460 release-keys which I looked up and is a vodafone firmware, what I want to know is that is this phone a manually unlocked phone or was it factory unlocked? And if I root it and then debrand it then will it get locked consequently needing an unlock code?
My hboot is 0.80 and touch panel synt101, is synt101 the amoled panel?
Yesterday I checked for an OTA update from the phone and it showed that an update is available, should I update? Will I still be able to root after the ota update?
Thank You Guys in Advance!

Vodafone don't SIM-lock their phones any more so any SIM card can be used it in - the only issue you'd have is down to updates for the device (Vodafone UK have just released their FroYo build so you can get that over WiFi) - you WON'T however, be able to root it so only do this if you want a stock 2.2 Desire
It'll be an AMOLED unit too more than likely.
That's a relief to hear that its not going to get locked. I do want to root it(for a custom firmware), so which procedure should I follow root > debrand > custom firmware. A link to a guide would be very helpful thanks.

Check this thread: TUT]Complete upgrading guide(root, unroot, flashing ROM & updates)
I found there all I needed to root my phone and made it ready for customizing.
A few of the rooting tutorials I have seen tell how to root either an unlocked unbranded phone or a locked branded phone. My phone has the vodafone firmware and it is unlocked, so presumably it falls into the category of unlocked branded phones? So should I follow the guides for the unbranded unlocked phones or the other?

Hi all,
Since the last OTA created plenty of problems to debranded Orange owners, I just wanted to let everybody know that I did install the OTA and did not find any problem so far.... everything went smoothly in updating OTA from the latest RUU update. No need for gold cards or complicated procedures

Can I ask which method did you use to originally debrand your phone? Which rome did you flash to?
The 405 RUU that had been posted around may on these forums... see here for a full list:

Very easy, all you need is to make a gold card. Things get slightly more messy if you are not a Windows user.

for my own device :
It was Orange France 1.22 ROM;
I rooted my device with UnrEVOked;
Then I use the downgrade method that uses fake ROM version reporting to RUU;
Installed full Europe_1.15 HTC ROM;
And install all OTA updates, as when asked.
Note : I alway have my gold card in it, and I never got any trouble.
Thanks. I dont want to root my phone just debrand it to receive OTA`s directly from HTc and not wait for carrier specific.
Question: is it safer to flash it to 1.15 and then do OTA to 1.21 and Froyo or flash directly with 1.21?
Directly 1.21, if I did not screw up version numbers it was the jump from 1.15 to 1.21 that created the problem when done in OTA (WiFi module could not be loaded correctly)

ql. did you have to have your goldcard in while doing the FROYO update?
Yes

First off, I've had WM phones for years and flashed them to bits but I'm pretty nooby when it comes to Android, so bear with me.
Alrighty then, after all the hoo-ha with the last update I've held off debranding my Orange Desire for all this time - I got mine on Orange launch day so I've had to put up with the Orange crap for a long while. Basically all I want to do it debrand and get FroYo, I'm not interested in rooting yet but I can't really afford to unlock it (student loan is getting very low this summer). I understand I need a Goldcard etc and I'm happy enough with the procedure.
My question, when the 2.2 RUU appears, will it lock my Desire if I flash it with the Goldcard?
edit - Another question, if I flash to an old debranded ROM, will I have to run through the problematic updates before I'm offered the 2.2 OTA update, hence locking my phone?
Use your goldcard for debranding and updating and you should be fine. Personally I would just buy an unlock code and debrand to an older ROM and then do any OTA updates.
Mine is Orange debranded and updated just fine when using the goldcard.

Thanks for the reply, I'll wait for the RUU and see how it goes I guess.
Anyone know how long it usually takes for the RUU to appear after the OTA is put out?
Hello,
I don't know if this is the right section to post this in, but I have a few questions regarding the debranding/rooting phase.
I currently have a branded T-Mobile HTC Desire (1.21.110.4). My main objective is to get to the point where I have an 1.21.405.2 HTC Desire without root. I'm not interested in having a rooted phone, but it seems that in order to fully debrand my phone to received updates directly from HTC and not through T-Mobile, I need to root the phone, apply a ROM and then unroot?
Can someone please confirm if this is what I need?
Many thanks,
Ashley

To get OTA updates via HTC you would need to root, have a goldcard, flash an unbranded HTC ROM and then search for updates. They'll arrive if available.

Thanks for the reply.
What's the difference between creating a goldcard and using unrevoked? Should I not have used unrevoked? And how would I remove it?
Got an HTC Desire from work on O2. We had it unlocked the other day by O2 and I'm now running it with an Orange SIM. I thought that once unlocked Froyo would be available but when I check the software update I'm shown that I've got 2.1 running and no updates available.
Help!

You've probably got a branded desire, you would need to flash an unbranded rom and then search for updates I think.
Hi mate,
If you use the Root meathod by search the forum for Unvolked meathod install the recovery program by following the guide, then putting the flash zip update froyo rom from this forum on your sd card, backup using nandroid then flash and when phone restarts you have updated 2.2 android on the phone.
Any problems send me a msg.
i dig out some instructions for you, that i followed, the guys on here are excellent when it comes to helping you, see my post help please, in development sections.

Yes. That would be the quickest way to get Froyo 2.2.
It will also void your warranty though.
That is true, however HTC state if you root your HTC at your own risk,
but my phone provider stated if i have any problems they don't check.
Im with Virginmedia. mobile. who are putting the rom out next month and your have to download and zip so you will need to root it to do that.
Thanks
Tapper
I've just bought a brand new desire on an O2 contract, which of course means it was locked to O2 only. I've now unlocked it and am using my Voda SIM card in it which is working perfectly.
However, today I read that Vodaphone relased the 2.2 OTA update, but when I try to check for updates it says my phones software is up to date.
Does this mean I need to put the official Vodaphone ROM on to allow me to update to 2.2? I'm a bit put off about rooting my device though, as I've got the 0.83 bootloader and I'm pretty sure it's a SLCD screen, which I've heard can have a few issues if putting new ROM's onto.
Cheers for any advice,
You are running branded O2 software, so you will not get Vodafone's update. You need to wait for O2 to release an update, or debrand and run stock 2.2.
OK, cheers mate

or debrand, root flash a stock 2.1, unroot and update OTA to 2.2
hope this helps! good Luck!
