[Q] New to rooting questions, any dummies guides? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a few questions that would probably be answered by a dummies guide to rooting, I haven't found it yet.
Can someone point me to some threads that may help?
background.
I have 4 Evo phones sitting on my desk in various states of disrepair, either Sprint or Asurion have been expecting them for a few days. I've only destroyed one phone myself, the others are gifts from sprint hoping to silence me on the FroYo issues my phone has been having, or refurbished phones that are defective. All in all, I'm expecting my 6th Evo tomorrow.
Until today I've never rooted a phone. This afternoon I have successfully followed the instructions to root a 2.2 Evo from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496
I performed this on one of my non-enabled phones just for grins.
I am planning on performing this procedure on my new replacement tomorrow out of the box.
Here are a few of my questions as an example of my level of experience, or lack there of... Please feel free to answer them, or point me in the right direction to find my answers.
In a nutshell, what can I do with a rooted phone?
Will I be able to use the phone as a modem tethered, and use the wireless router feature?
If I wanted to use a custom rom, where do I start? What features are good to look for for a beginner?
How much hell am I going to get for returning this 'damaged' phone to sprint now that I have rooted it, and what can I do about it?
Thanks
Andrew

One thing you can use a rooted phone for is to search these forums for the answers to your questions that have been posted so many times already. At least you posted in the right forum.

hahahahah - sorry andrew but he is right.
even though i truly do believe the only dumb question is the one not asked, the best help you coudl ever receive is from yourself.
forums, including this one are a rats nest of uncontroller blabbering and nearly unsearchable threads. (unsearchable because of the countless worthless results you get) but the answers are out there.
yes you can usb and wifi tither
yes you can turn on the vibration feature, wrap it in a jimmy and give your wife a good time
expect pain and heart ache if you are a former iphone ipod touch user... you will hate android for its lack of anything even remotely like the quality of gmes and apps you find on the apple devices.
(hate me for saying that but android cant come close to the graphics and games available from apps) and althoug the apps list is growing, there are countless upon countless repeated apps, all doing the same thing, and only a rare few that actually work.)
and you have how many replacement EVO's ??? for WHAT froyo issues... i find it highly suspect that sprint sent out new phones without sending you to a sprint store to have them reload the phone.
sorry but sprint doesnt send out multiple MULTIPLE phones for supposed issues....
i would love to know what issues you are having.
i think its more of a phone issue than a Froyo issue...
or maybe its the good ol "the problem lies between the keyboard and the chair" issue.

Hey Andrew, I would be glad to give you some guidance; however, next time try a search in the forum first, as your question may have been asked before.
To search through the forum, click on "Search this Forum" in the upper-right hand part of the screen when at the EVO Forum site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=619
You say you have a handful of EVOs? Lucky you!
Wel first you need to find out if they have Android 2.1 or 2.2 installed onto them.
To do so, press "Menu" when at your home screen, then "Settings," then scrool to the very bottom and press "About Phone." Click "Software Information" and you will most likely either see "2.1-update1" or "2.2."
Rooting 2.1 is much easier than rooting 2.2. A rooting method for stock 2.2 was actually just released a few short days ago.
To root 2.1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701004
To root 2.2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496
It looks complicated, but I promise it's not. JUST follow the instructions.
There's even a video guide now!
Hope I could help!

Thanks, I will read through yall's messages in more detail after lunch.
my first replacement was from asurion because I broke the screen, inside the body glove case, inside the leather carry case, dropped from about 2'..
after the 2.2 update my phone has continually reset anywhere from 2 to 15 times a day, the gmail push is highly unreliable. Sprint says it is aware of the problem and they are sending out a replacement phone which was supposed to have 2.1 on it, however, it did not. I've got 2 phones from them on this basis. I decided to finally give up and just wait for a new update.
That's when I discovered that I could in fact go back to 2.1 as part of the rooting process.
I plan on testing the push issue when my new, new, new phone arives today. This one was sent because the last replacement had a defective earpiece. It is almost unusable, I have to use my bluetooth headset, or speakerphone..
Thanks
Andrew

ok, I'm all read up. I think my problem with searching the forum is that I'm not sure that I'm searching for the right thing.
First of all, just to be clear, I have successfully followed the instruction on rooting my 2.2 phone.
I have just received a new phone from sprint that I have not activated yet. I guess I'm hoping to get some guidance as to how to proceed.
Should I just follow the instructions again and root it as I did my other phone?
Are there some other ROM builds that anyone would suggest that I try?
Some real time advice as to how to proceed would be appreciated..
Here is the software info, my new one is only slightly different than all the others have been, perhaps someone could explain what the PRL Version means.

I guess let me rephrase the q.
I am now sitting on a brand new (sprint refurbished) Evo. I have not activated it yet.
What should I do?
(also, I'm wanting to experiment more, I'm not an idiot, but I do need my phone to be reliable, being self employed, it is the hub of my business..)
a) Root it and put 2.2 back on? and then do what?
b) Root it and put ? back on?
c) Leave it stock and ???
d) ReActivate my Samsung m330 and go home, beaten with my tail between my legs and check my email on the library computer like a homeless geek?
e) eat my fill of cream of mushroom soup and invest in some kite string?

I nricked my phone. Bad. Lost everything after having flashed roms for half a year on the evo. Brought it in to a Sprint store, the manager there was an ex employee of mine, who I fired. But she got a better job, so she was actually grateful. So much so that she wrote my phone off as a software issue and put me in to receive a phone in two days. I did, and anxiously pushed the ota through(it was the Friday it became available). Stupid me, I had no way of gaining root. So luckily I found out this refurbished phone had a hdmi port problem, it would not read the signal without wiggling the cord around. I called up Sprint, told them I wanted a new phone( thus was after I brought it in to two different stores to try to have it downgraded to group, unsuccessfully) and they said no problem, eight to ten days, due to a border. I NICELY asked for a new phone, not a refurbished one. Three days layer, today, I got my phone. Brand new with a manufacture date of 6/02/11. Excited but nervous, I booted up, went to hardware info, viola! Android 2.2
Back in business. Rooted a few minutes later, and am now downloading Kings newest version of 3.0
As far as waiting for unrevoked, I was willing to. I appreciate all development persons who make my phone better. So sit tight homie, or find a workaround yourself. Let those who provide us with things we can't do ourselves work on their own time. Asking for a time or date is expecting service you dont deserve. Off puttish, really...

Lol great story.the whole reason I started this thread is because I can't find a release date anywhere. I very much appreciate what the devs do for us on the evos, my phone lasts 24 hours plus cause of them
Asking us about Unrevoked is like asking a Brick Layer about Photoshop keyboard shortcuts and the effect of color dodge on a 3 color gradient

[Q] 4.22.651.2 vs 4.24.651.1, will the update break or prevent future root-ability?

Executive Summary
I had my Evo replaced the other day and the new one came with 2.3.3 (Gingerbread), build 4.22.651.2 (with HBOOT 2.16.0001). Yesterday, the phone told me that a new OTA update was available, v 4.24.651.1.
Will updating break any future chances of root? Will it break anything else? Are there any drawbacks?
Long version
I bought an Evo on launch day, and it wound up having the screen separating problems, so I eventually got another unit from the store. This one wound up having the white spot on the B. They replaced the screen at the local store, but the new screen had a stuck pixel, a crack around the power button, and the front camera did not work. They ordered me a new phone, said it would take a while, and they'd call me. I never got their call after a month, so we did this whole song and dance again about a week and a half ago. The new phone came with Gingerbread on it. It seemed cool, seemed to give better battery life and all was happy (there was a restart option in the power menu! that was the first reason I rooted(Quick boot)!!!). Till I looked up how to root the thing. I don't like waiting It seems I'll be doing that anyways though.
So the new phone came with 4.22.651.2 (with HBOOT 2.16.0001) and yesterday, the phone told me that a new OTA update was available, v 4.24.651.1. Since I don't want to screw up my chances of rooting in the future, I am trying to find out if I should update or not. The update does contain a useful fix for me: voice search. The version I have is broken.
Since I tried to be proactive, I used Titanium backup before I got the new phone. I backed up some apps & games and my txt messages. I'm not dying without either, but it'd be nice if I could access them (read txts, copy over save game files).
As far as contributing to make root: if its an automated process, I have maybe a ton of hardware I could set up to throw at it to crunch numbers or somesuch. Mostly older equipment (p2, p3, p4), but I have some stuff newer.
i use to have an evo 4g yes it is possible for them to send an update to lock it back up and fill in the holes so to speak and for not getting root again if you have s-off you can always reflash a new rom to it. that is the way it was when i had one but you are talking a few months since i had mine now, but i imagine it's still the same. just make sure you make a backup before doing it. also to note a lot of devs will make the same rom one it's out so you don't have to worry about rerooting it later os you can wait for them to do that too.
From what it looks like that update only fixed things like Netflix, voicemail ect.... more like an addendum to the original 2.3.3 update. I don't see you having root issues(when available) unless they move to 2.3.4 maybe?
The good news is that a group of people in the Dev section seem to be getting closer to getting root.

[Q] Root method for 2.3 Gingerbread and help please

OKay for weeks now i have been searching ways to Root my HTC EVO I have been looking and looking maybe i am confused so now i see great methods to root the files are no good such as ginger breaks and other ways such you tube videos but unable to find a video who do play by play how to do a easy successful root method now i am currently S-on my Hboot is 2.15 and build number is 4.24 now i know unrevoked is not working since the update make a long story short if anybody has some of a method please reply in a nice way and don't bash me because i may not know this phone stuffed by i am geek in computers so we all have good things what we do best.
Put simply, 2.3 hasn't been rooted yet, they're making progress but you're out of luck for the moment.
Still no method yet, waiting impatiently, check the forums multiple time daily. I'm sure there will be an announcement when it available, so just keep your eyes peeled. Just rooted my wifes evo because she never accepted the OTA, now I'm drooling in jealousy.
That hurt my head

Well I have my HTC evo 4g fully rooted with unrevoked. What I did is I broke my phone and I'm under the black tie program with sprint. I called asurion to get my NEW AND UNUSED PHONE. They asked if I would rather it come fully activated. Or would I rather activate it myself. I told them I'd rather activate it myself. I paid the 100 dollar deposit and while Isaac activating my phone I stopped the firmware and software update. It only comes on the phone as an ota if you activate yourself. If they activation it you will be stuck where you are. After stopping the firmware update I was sitting at stock android 2.2 aka froyobwith hboot 2.10. If you're willing to spend 100 bucks to do this, it will come a lot faster than the HTC bootloader update or the developers hacking methods. No offense to the development team. You Guy do an amazing job. But yea, that's the way I did it. Then I rooted with unrevoked and am currently running cm7 and am extremely happy with improved battery life along many other things. Maybe this will help you

I agree with this. NEVER EVER EVER EVER LET SPRINT activate a phone. DON'T EVEN LET THOSE ASSHOLES TOUCH IT! Biggest mistake you can EVER EVER make! spread this around. :-D However!, I find it hard to believe on the "I called asurion to get my NEW AND UNUSED PHONE."
It might not be unused but it definitely came in mint condition with the froyo firmware on it so that's all I needed lol as of right now if you're willing to spend the 100 bucks its well worth it in my opinion. Good luck getting root guys ill see if I can't find a way to help the devs and the others working in the collaboration in the development section.

That is not necessarily true. My evo was destroyed in a car accident. Asurion sent me my replacement. I was hoping it would be 2.2 and denied their request to activate my phone. When the new phone arrived, it had already been loaded with 2.3.3. I didn’t even bother to activate it and ended up going back to my rooted hero for the time being. Getting a replacement phone is a crapshoot. There are multiple posts on XDA giving anecdotal reports of replacement phones. Most are shipping with gingerbread. Some still will have froyo. Some (very few) will come with S-off. Don’t assume that by breaking your phone and dropping $100 you will automatically be shipped a phone capable of being unlocked at present time.

It really depends on if the phone was made before the ota release date and whatnot. You cn request that it come with 2.2 instead of gb. This method may not work for everyone but I know that it has worked for the friends I have around my area. They saw what happened and wanted to try it and its worked for them. If you feel that its a longshot at getting the right phone
Then by all means stick with what you've got. I just was willing to try anything to get rid of gb. But now I'm running cm7 with a tiamat kernel and am very happy. Little side note: I actually didn't break my phone on purpose.

I see your method and point so I am in KCMO AKA Kansas City MO doing some research online and from Best Buy they have an HTC EVO for 99.99 in white Android 2.2 and even called them to confirmed but doing some thinking and playing around on the Android Market SPB 3D its Awesome since I cant root my phone but I pay the 14.95 that way my phone is not harm and I have my warranty still but i am sticking with SPB 3D
They just came out with the revolutionary root for gingerbread. Look in the android dev section and you'll find it. It works too. I rooted a friends phone using that method and he had absolutely no issues with his phone. Even though my usb cord had a short in it there was no problem with it that made it brick even though it disconnected multiple times. Id have to say that it is a very safe root method. So check it out if you're still interested in root

[Q] Rooted Sprint EVO 4G OTA upgrade Question. (2.2 (Froyo) to 2.3 (Gingerbread))

About a year ago I purchased a used EVO It just happen that the person I purchased it from worked at a sprint repair center (he no longer works there so I can’t ask him) when I purchased it (used) it was already Rooted. I know most of you will cringe when I say that even though I have a rooted phone should be doing cool stuff like different ROM’s etc… I have not. I only use it for the tethering feature. I don’t even know what or how it was rooted. Which leads me to my questions?
1. How can I tell what was used to root my Phone (unrevoked etc..).
2. I’d like to upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3
a. Do I need to un-root, upgrade then root?
b. Can I just get a copy of a rooted Gingerbread and push it to my EVO? If so how do I go about that and where can I get a copy.
I’ve looked and looked on the web at various sites for information however there is so much out there it’s hard to determine what I am looking for or even need.
My ultimate goal here is improve all around performance of my EVO (Battery life, Speed boot times, keeping wireless tethering)
Any help is greatly appreciated
1. If you're on 2.2, there is a good chance that the phone was rooted using unrevoked, since it was the most popular and the least complicated root method at the time. It actually could have been rooted with Unrevoked, Toast Method 2, or AutoRoot. There are ways to tell but I don't want to write a book full of If-Then scenarios here.
2. No, do not unroot, and yes just get a copy of a rooted Gingerbread ROM. There are quite a few out there. Just look in the Development Section.
Thanks for the info, shortydoggg!
No problem.

[Q] Not sure where to post

Hi folks
I'm so new here, it took 3 days to find the "thank" button (had to turn off some scripts in browser)
I would be grateful if folks would indicate where to put what posts (subjects, questions), what NOT to post (I suspect I might be speaking "taboo" words) I am a tad autistic, we can be rude without meaning to be. But I been building PC's since '1989, piddling with Linux since mandrake 7, so the good news is CAN read the "destructions" and I know how to use IRC just a bit, on the PC (post code to pastebin, and such)
I'm an old biddy. So old I can remember when a landline "Caller ID" was called a "Snitch-Box". I have grudgingly accepted that wireless phones must send THEIR OWN meid over an unsecure radio in order to work. This was due to happy discovery of pre-paid carriers that don't require MY DNA in order to accept my money. Prior to that epiphany, I totally hated the cellphone concept ... Not Secure. In order to activate the "device", ever, it must first be SECURED.
I *did* lurk around many weeks before diving in with the barage of questions... With the help of the tutorials here, have managed to survive a couple of "brickings" and even got a ROM into my phone :victory:
First -- about me poor "Labaratory Rat" device. Can't really call it "phone" coz it was a "brick" when I got it. My friend dropped it in the sink and thot it was dead, gave it to me with a collection of scrapped CDMA phones. Dried it out in dessicant on the hot H20 heater, and to my surprise resurrection! Trouble was, I had revived a very unhappy 'device'. Crammed full of bloatware, [solved with Cyanogenmod ROM] and still has some "firmware" issues. I am simply trying to restore the "device" to CLEAN, NAKED, OPEN source, before I decide wether it's practical for telecommunication use.
It has an acceptable camera, I enjoyed using it to play music, I didn't really see a need to do anything to it till I found I couldn't load a paid tutorial APP for my class.
I can make a PC poop a popsickle and then carve you a tiny rosary outa the stick. I'm so old I can remember moving "DIPP" switches on a motherboard to clock a CPU. I'm VERY CERTAIN the firmware issues can be cleaned up.
OK, so what I have here:
BRAVOC DVT2 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.98.000
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-2.05.0.11
Jul 5 2010:19:14:11
The good news being it's got a fast little processor and 512K ram (I can remember running autocad on 512K, it's usable) The bad news is it was probably thrown away because the carrier (US Cellular) has shipped it with root-kit (Of course, autistic person cannot understand why anyone would pay for a "device" that has a built in Root Kit) I know, the carriers offer the hardware for free, Like "Here is some free cheese = MOUSETRAP"
Managed to get 4ext recovery touch v1.0.0.5 RC9 testing in there.
I like it ALOT better without "Sense" (Cyanogen 7.2 is what's in there now)
I can see that the Android-ness is very much like Linux, which I "grok", it appears that "hboot" is the Android equivalent of "grub"?
And I am guessing that the "root-kit" is living in this HBOOT (I've noticed that the 98 series seems limitted to US Cellular shipped HTC's)
From the looks of it, I'm gonna have to learn to "build" (again -- and I only did it a couple times way back when) to fix this? since I see there's some very nice ROMs folks are running on this phone, but I don't need the "Sense" part?
Moderator, please move my post if I'm in the wrong place. I honestly cannot find where the "Un-ROOTKIT my BravoC" section is. Or maybe point me toward the discussion of how to make/build/install this HBOOT?
Thanks in Advance
