Am I correct in my understanding that OpenDesire (and DeFrost) just more fleshed out versions of CM6 (nightlies)? It seems that they share most of the same features, except that some things like apps2sd is not yet well supported in CM6...

cm6 is the origin. od and df are both copies (with minal changes) of cm6. i've tested them all in many versions. i can say that cm6 is the best in all categories (speed, battery, oj-bug [never had that with cm6]).
but i think this thread should be closed. there are already two other threads about that question....aaaand test it yourseld ;-)
My opinion: CM ftw!

Such childish comment.
If you want to compare these 3 roms I suggest you try them out yourselves and form your own conclusion.
Thanks for your answers. The reason for my question was that I am getting a bit tired of switching between different releases, and would like to find one release that satisfies my requirements, sees active development, and works. I'm currently using OpenDesire, and based on the responses I guess there's really no reason to switch from one to the other as they are basically the same. The main motivation for trying OpenDesire above CM 6 was that apps2sd comes preconfigured, i.e. there is less hassle setting it up.
Also, seeing as they are quite similar, there will probably be little help in switching from one to the other to solve problems such as dying OJ, intermittent unresponsive screen, and others.
i've been using defrost since 0.4 or something like that richardtrip always took good care of his users and always tries his best to give us a good, fast and stable rom. and please stop these ****ty threads all ready they suck and serve no purpose except flaming and *****ing.
ppl these roms are all open source use the one you like, stick with it if you are happy if not switch stop making these threads!

To be fair, it served my need, but I can see that it is quickly degenerating with your complaints.
look we all need to understand one thing,
Take you phone into your hand, turn it around,
now start reading
htc
WITH HTC SENSE
so we all bought phones from HTC, not XDA, not richardtrip, kali, adamg or <enter name of dev>, it's pure luck that somebody somewhere decided to invest his spare time, resources and GOOD WILL to make something for us users. It's not a right to use custom ROMs, it's a privilege and a damed big one!
We all need to tone down with *****ing and nagging people who do this just for us, not for HTC, not for google and they aren't employed by us to produce thes ROMs. Can you even begin to understand how many ppl at google and HTC worked on the original ROM? Hundreds. How many beta testers tested releases that come every few months? Possibly a few hundred maybe even thousands initially for google and still they miss a bug or even 10s of bugs. Now there are a few good people here who use their knowledge and time to give us better roms, They don't have resources of big companies like Google and HTC and yet they make great roms for us, for free.
So please people stop making threads about rom vs rom, stop *****ing who stole what from who, this all is an open source community and everyone here needs to understand that anyone can take their work and change it so it fits their needs better. Devs are good people and they try their best to give us something better every day, we as users can choose our flavors just like ice cream, or frozen yogurt for that matter, you don't go to the people who made your ice cream when you don't like it, you just get another flavor based on what you can learn from the people who like that other flavor.
Let me sum it up a bit,
if you are using CM, then go to the CM thread and ask questions there,
let me give you and example,
"how is your battery on the latest build?"
if you want to know something about battery life on DeFrost you go to the Defrost thread and first search a little bit, than if you can't find the answer post
"am using CM and get 34 hours from my battery, do you get more on DeFrost and does DeFrost support <insert the name of what you need>" and than wait for an answer,
making a new thread like this isn't going to help you or anybody else for that matter. it's just going to start flame wars from fan-boys of each rom and then people start throwing stupid accusations like "this is just a copy of that" with no evidence what so ever and then the whole community suffers cos you had to open another thread instead of looking into threads that already exist.

@ivan_white: Calm down.
He's not asking for "Which Rom is better?"
If that would be the case I'd be fine with your comment.
He's just asking what the big differences are because they look very similar and that's what they are.
If someone would tell him "Rom XYZ has traditional A2SD and Rom ABC has the Google A2SD" then that would be exactly the thing he'd like to know.
For myself there is no rom (without sense) which currently fulfills my needs. I need the enterprise search in the contacts apps. Haven't found that outside the Sense world so far. Except from that feature and the "great" (compared to others) Exchange implementation I don't need Sense.

well the problem is that if he used the search function he would have found about 20 answers to his question... search before making a thread and i know he didn't mean anything wrong he had old threads and threads for each rom, plus each rom has a feature list on the front page... so this thread is pointless and could only serve as a place for flame

I understand what you're asking but "which rom to get" is not appropriate, insulting to the chefs, and very subjective. This thread shall be soon be closed i'm sure, right mods??
But to answer some of your post, the face down speaker phone option you speaking of wanting to do is available as a tweak in almost all roms and is a simple registry tweak (as are all other tweaks) that you can do your self, just search for it and i'm sure you'll find it..
Misunderstanding
I didn't mean it. I dont know which is best like that have almost every option because people here tried almost every rom. I jst tried 3 roms so that is why. Like i installa new rom last night and my camera is not working on that. Unbealiveable
Not again...
There is no such "perfect ROM"!!!
This has been commented many times before.
What is perfect for me could be not for you
Try them all and decide what fits you better
Also as a general idea, enter to ROM section and see what is the one more users have installed, that would give you an idea

You can look at the number of replies in the threads to get an idea which ones you might want to try. Most chefs are also courteous enough to list many of the features and tweaks of their ROMs in the first couple of posts of the thread.
If it helps, some of the more popular ROMs are Valkyrie, the various Energy ROMs, and the various Cell series ROMs.
Perfect roms don't exist. All have pros and cons, its like everyone here is saying, you just have to find one that fits you.
Anyways, on a positive note, the lock application I believe you are looking for is S2U2: http://ac-s2.com/
Take a cooking class
I too, want the PERFECT rom...but for that I will need to learn my way around the kitchen and cook one up myself. Even stock roms have glitches. The difference is that most, if not all the chefs here try to stay on top of glitches. You may need to make some "sacrifices" to what your idea of a perfect rom is, and instead have a really damned good rom. I am still running stock for warranty purposes, as my device is VERY new, that being said, I have spoken with many cooks here as well as many Rhodium "pros", and have come to the conclusion that Energy roms and JoshKoss roms are very good. I cannot tell you from personal experience about these roms, as I stated above, I do know that Chef Josh has been very kind and quick in responding to me over past inquiries.
I wish you luck. Perhaps you should instead consider reading the many extensive tutorials that explain the kitchen. This may be the only way to get YOUR perfect rom. What I may think is perfect you may think is crap. A little scenario...last night I spent HOURS making dinner, I thought it was very good, as did my kids, my husband, however, thought it was just OKAY. Same with the various roms. The chefs cannot please everyone all the time, so perhaps the only sure-fire way to get a perfect rom is to make it yourself.

In terms of stability and speed, I have yet to tweak anything to match my stock 6.1.
In terms of eye candy and usefulness, I really like the Energy Leo 6.5 w/ sense 2.5. Most of the features really reduce the time it takes to get to my favorite locations.

So you didn't get the answer you wanted so you are going to take your toys and go home?? No offense but your response sounded like something my 9 year old would throw at me.
Several people answered with rom possibilities, but we also said that the elusive PERFECT ROM is truly a matter of taste. Stable roms are built of off stock 6.1 or 6.5's, and 6.5.3 builds have extra bells and whistles but the consensus seems to be that they are buggier.
I myself stated Energy or JoshKoss roms a few entries above. While I have not tested them myself, the various pages and pages of reviews sound very positive. Others have made other suggestion.
You are chasing unicorns. Period. The only truly perfect rom would be one you build yourself. No chef can cater to your specific wants and needs (unless you PM them and arrange some form of compensation for their time). What I feel would be perfect may be the total opposite of what you or John Doe thinks.
I'm sorry you didn't get the answer you hoped for, and if you choose to not participate in the forums that will be your choice, and frankly, your loss. We have tried to do our best to point you in a direction that may help you. If none of the suggestions fit your needs, then learn to cook your own rom. I understand that it can be tedious to read the many pages associated with the various cooked roms, but I have managed to do that with several of them, you can too. It is the only way you will learn what works and what doesn't. We will guide you, but we won't do the work for you.
I apologize if this seems rude, but it has become quite frustrating to see yet another "perfect rom" thread.
Perfect ROM
Near as I can figure, the perfect ROM is the Apple iphone. Or at least it seems to me that post after post after post is users trying to make Windows Mobile, Look, Act, Feel, Sound like an iphone.
As a not so bright end user of many of the forum genius's works and yet, also devoted fan of Windows Mobile since early Ipaq days, I've found Energy Phoenix to be my personal favorite for hands on simplicity, ease of use and having all the basic features of my TILT 2 working. Curiously before I found that you could even have a custom ROM, I was using as a desktop background one of the pics he uses as his ROM background defaults. So that's how I was attracted to trying it. Pretty retarded huh?
I also use SBP Mobile Shell and have said to **** with POOPFLO3D. I swear I'd like to find the HTC guy who came up with that one and womp em a good one.

i used to have a htc vogue (aka htc touch vx 6900 US Cellular) that would run android eclair but slowly. i was due for an upgrade and picked up the more powerful touch pro 2 specifically to run android smoother. i love the dual boot between a nice custom win mo rom and android, however, ive noticed there isnt nearly as many diffrent android developers trying to port or whatever the term is to get it to work on the touch pro 2 like there is with win mobile roms. project android froyo ([PRJ][GSM&CDMA][CAB&RAR] XDAndroid AOSP Port & Startup Utility [8/30] FIXED NOISE!) has the most working stuff but even on a overclock runs like crap, lagging and not running certain apps. the klinux eclair 2.1 sense UI is great but locks up,lags,no sounds and has no internet. neopeek's eclair runs the best out of them all, super fast and responsive but no internet,no live wall paper and no sounds.
can anyone point me in the right direction of a actual android project or update that can bring me as close to a functioning android OS that will work. eclair looks promising on speed, but there is to much that is still broke on it. thx

when i said "actual" i ment one that works, im not trying to criticize any of the developers here or not be appreciative. im just looking to have android run as smooth as everyone else does on their tp2.
TP2 Development
I am experiencing the same situation as you, but understand the TP2 is still under heavy development. Now that sound is working I would imagine stability and other features will be addressed in the next few weeks. If you want a phone that will work perfectly with Android switch to the HTC Desire that US Cellular just put out a few weeks back, it ships with Android. You can buy yourself out of the contract pro-rated for the time you have left. You cannot expect a phone that ships with Windows Mobile to run Android flawlessly. If you want to increase progress you can download the development tools and help, or you can post a bounty for items you would like addressed. You could also download the 6/20 version of MightyROM and enjoy a stable WM6.5 build. Good luck!
They all work, just to varying degrees.
([PRJ][GSM&CDMA][CAB&RAR] XDAndroid AOSP Port & Startup Utility [8/30] FIXED NOISE!) has the most working stuff

That's probably the best build right there. If you were expecting Android to run flawlessly on your fancy new phone, you are very, very mistaken.
If you want Android to run like it does on Android-specific devices... then you probably should've bought an Android device.
yea, i know its still under dev, but its like i have to choose between lag on froyo builds but almost everything works,or eclair builds that run as smooth as silk but miss out on my data connection, gps, ect ect.
ive just spent so much time into studying everything into android development and installation/updates ect ect and i still haven't even scratched the surface and it becomes frustrating after a full month of installing and deleting and back and forth testing, trust me, i know we all do the same here, but my eyes are burning from reading so many forums/topics/guides and i figure ill just ask if anyone has got a few of the bugs i have mentioned out of the way.
i can appreciate that somethings dont work cause thats just the way it is,but the kicker here is that the froyo build has almost everything working correctly, not to go back right not and look at the topic, but the only thing thats not working is camera, battery and bluetooth i think? and no big deal i dont need it anyways right now, but why cant i get an eclair build in the same working order?
i just would of thought that what could be applied to froyo could just as easily been applied to eclair.
im on neopeek v1.1 eclair right now,im going to see if i can get my data connection for US cell to work with a few tweaks, but ill miss the live wallpapers and gps.
C'est la vie buddy.
lol,now after applying a fix for US cell's data network gps works but no data

um no,im not looking for perfection, im looking to find out which one if any i have overlooked works best as of current, either by a whole new development,or by updates or tweaks. how am i supposed to help contribute my findings and fixes when i cant get the damn thing as stable as it is on your phone?
when i say "works" i mean that as in what works for you? not as in its got to be 100 percent perfect.
once again let me explain why i started this thread seeing how we seem to not be on the same level of thinking here. ill be as clear as crystal so you dont miss a beat.follow with me here...
froyo from prj android works but has a few glitches here and there (and i applaud their work and contribution to us all and i dont expect it to be 100%),i would just like it run how everyone else has on their tp2 that ive seen on youtube. eclair runs faster and smoother and is more responsive but somethings are not working on TP2. is there any updates on eclair builds? is there anybody that is having lag issues on prj android froyo,or are there some tweaks/settings/ or apps to smooth it out? why has dev shifted from eclair to froyo if eclair was running as smooth as it is,or is it just my phone sucks for some reason and eclair runs faster on it?
im trying to see what other users settings are, other experiences and other alternatives. what "works" for you. not some kind of im asking for a whole re write of the port on my lap. or slave your work to me. but now weve already gone beyond that point now haven't we?

I'm not sure what to tell you. I doubt my phone works any better than yours or anyone elses - it's FAR from perfect, as you've found and evidently have accepted.
So wait and be patient for new developments with the project - it's always gotten better & better.
With that said, I can only assume eclair development stopped because I know I'd prefer to run froyo over eclair... You can try throwing a new zImage/modules/rootfs at an eclair build, but no guranatees there.
Did you ever think it could be your SD card? Have you tried switching them out? Have you done a FULL (not quick) format to FAT32?
Froyo runs WAY faster than Eclair EVER did on my handset. There is no doubt about the difference, and thats why development shifted away from a dying and outdated version.

the xdandroid port featuring froyo is the best there is atm, nothing else. You can overclock to get "perfection" if you think thats something you are allowed to say. Fact of the matter is that you arent developing these port, nor are you contributing in any way shape or form. If you are looking for a smooth android experience go get an android phone, if you want novelty and pioneering then stick to your TP2 and install xdandroid and stop arguing with other members on this forum.
As for all the questions you asked in the post I quoted, there is a search button you could use so that you dont have to start useless threads.

I personally have tried them both and I just like xdandroid posted by reefer better, so I guess I should have said " in my opinion" rather than just "atm". my bad. I just hate it when people come into forums just to ask questions and to belittle the developers work and not search first themselves. Usually those are the people that are here solely to freeload and not even help with troubleshooting other members problems or post experiences.
this is actually my 10th or more install of prj android froyo and this time for some weird reason it is faster.
yes i did format the sd card the long way, i used gparted live cd as well because i had to set it up for neopeek in 2 partitions . i have two sd cards at 2 and 4 gigs (i swap between) that i just decided to keep a 512mb partition in ext2 for projects like neopeek on both of them.
regardless this time around is giving me a faster experience on froyo, and i didnt edit change anything, just the common install with a soft restart as usual.i am using the blazn overclock i believe it is 716 or 768 mhz.
and of coarse i will keep you posted on any changes or fixes i find.
ambegojapes said:
the xdandroid port featuring froyo is the best there is atm, nothing else.

Usually those are the people that are here solely to freeload and not even help with troubleshooting other members problems or post experiences.

what is it with you people, didn't mommy and daddy love you enough as a child and teach you if you dont have anything good to say then dont say it all. who is belittling developers? i didnt come in here saying i think some one from this project or that is retarded,as a matter of fact i am grateful for the work these people have done and your trying to belittle me. im explaining what issues im having between different projects and jerks like you are trying to make me look like the bad guy.so comon down from your high horse and actually read what im talking about instead of jumping of the handle and making your self look like a complete jackass. yet once again, you miss the point. if i wanted an android phone i would of got one from the beginning ,i got a tp2 obviously to play around with android, see what it can do,what i can do to it and other reasons. ive got a few dev tools to create software for android i would like to use, so im asking questions, and if you sat a computer for as long as i have researching this with 30 or more tabs open trying to take notes from other threads, you'd be sick of reading all this other crap and post your own experiences/questions too.
and im a little well wiser than to keep stroking your ego, because people like you starve for the attention, otherwise you wouldnt jump into this thread to post your snotty ass comments.so if you wanna keep talking crap instead of offering something insightful to say,go ahead, cause im done dealing with **** heads like you.
Well another thread where you all jump on someone and make him look like an asshole for asking questions. How can you help people when you treat them like ****? I've been working with Linux and Android for a while now and I bet half of you write code that looks like a kid scribbling on the back of a McDonald´s napkin. I tell you what.. Treat people better and you just might have more people to aid in the projects and to the functionally quality. I have been messing with Linux and the open source development scene for years and this is a joke. Like a bunch of kids with computers and a power trip but on the same token you all write code like old people ****
I am getting annoyed of many ROM threads here, because they are
stating "speed improvements, minor fixes, stable" - if you cant name it exactly, i call bull****.
ROMs being based on the same RUU as other ROMs but not stating what is different. please stop wasting my time. i dont want to go sherlock holmes on your ROM. when you just spend 2h, to make a ROM that is basically the same like most other (just differeing in the point above) - thats fine, you can play around and share it here - but PLEASE tell us.
incomplete list of what is working or not. listing only BT as not working and then reading on the third page "animations and browser download dont work" and then a reply "they dont work on any sense 4.0 ROM". Or stuff like "bugs: you tell me". could you please take 10minutes to test against a checklist?!
so whats my point:
I am no ROM developer, but a software developer. And I see all the wonderfull work done here. But i hate the lazy "you all probably know what im talking about" attitude around here. I feel a bit scammed by either the very shiny threads with custom logos and artwork, listing as many points as they can - whats the purpose - you dont sell anything here. Or on the other hand the very short threads that omit the most important points, making the ROMs incompareable - are you hiding something?
so i propose:
an enforced thread layout, that is composed by the community.
some points i would like to see in it:
name
version
based on (RUU revision number, link)
android revision(, sense revision)
type (a coarse classification: stock, themed, bloatfree, desensed, ported, testrelease, AOSP. multiple selection possible)
changes to base (the 5 main topics of this ROM. at least kernel, bootscreen, keyboard, launcher, theme)
dependencies: firmware etc.
screenshot (i know mostly there is no difference, but i personally am a visual type and need them )
a bug checklist (also community build, most usual bugs, states: ok, minor, broken, untested)
a tweaks checklist (e.g. rooted, deodexed, zipaligned, crt, recent apps, APM, battery, /etc/hosts, beats etc.)
APK versions (also a community build checklist, maybe a script for that)
changelog (for each old version a download, for each change a source link, not just "thanks xyuser" - having the ROM in github etc. would be awesome)
I bet there are some more points - i think the non-developers should unite and demand a bit of quality. Develop and enforce a standard. Use this thread to gather ideas.
And inb4 "be gratefull and take what you get" - no, I think chefs have a responsibility to be transparent, they get lots of testers and glory in return. XDA is a central reference for everyone who roots his device. Mods have taken some good steps to clean up the mess. Now its time for the next.
I think the more detailed the information gets, the faster the development will become and users can build trust in what they flash.
Mods, would something like this be possible?
Yes, it will make everything easier for the users too compare one with another.

I also agree, There are way to many roms out there, I couldnt possibly flash them all and test them, My phone would be outdated by the time i managed that.
The majority are exactly the same, except with the occasional different theme /tweak /app but other than that i think they are similar...
I also get the feeling that the ROMs are a pretty much copy & paste job (with the exception of the devs that build from scratch)
I would like to see some sort of organization in the development thread.. I have nothing against these ROM Makers, But if the first post pointed out what exactly makes THIS ROM different than any others. i think it would be less confusing to people..
I am so for this. I am tired myself of all the crap too. I would like to know what I'm getting and how stable it truly is. I mean saying it's stable but then u find our in post number 400, that one the newest release there are some bugs which don't make it go for every day use. And if it's kanged, tell us, some do tell us but then same get someone else and make it theirs with some changes but nobody finds out till later. I'm also tired of ppl causing problems for others, whenever they follow rules more than others, and tell them this is such & suches place u better leave. I that's y some really good ppl leave here and sometimes the mods allow it cause they're friends. It's total bs, but this is just how I feel!

I get belittled sometimes in them threads, Im just trying to ask a simple question and the replies are 'dude.. this was asked ten times already.. look at post 862816745 and you will see....' Maybe there should be a forum for 'Original Development' for projects that aren't a variation of another project. I've seen this for other devices' forums.

Looks like I was never enjoyed my phone even just for 1 day. Today I've installed a ROM, adding many apps from Market which took many hours to setup & configure.
While I've become comfortable with the ROM, something freaked Me ouy: "Oh, there is even better and way more stable ROM available than this current ROM." Downloading, it takes about 1 to 2 hours. Then booted the ROM, but I caught myself disappointed with the news, "This new one has just another clone of the first ROM I've ever tried." Oh no, it has different theme and feels! "All of them are on the same base, same kernel, same etc, etc, etc."
Then, my final decision should be restoring the first ROM through Recovery, but again it takes minutes to complete.
And yet, I fooled with Battery Calibration placebo/myth which actually doesn't exist. Do I need to recalibrate my battery on s ROM changes? No, Google Official has just stated it's just a myth and placebo.
This is what I feel, sorry I mean no offense to any Devs.

Dude I am so with u. Some threads r just so damn long that to every little post would take to long and I would probably never be able to flash a rom. As far as noobs go, we were all noobs at one point. I get most to get me on gtalk so I can help them without some as telling them off. Yeah sometimes it takes me some time but hell I've been able to save quite a few phones.
Its a much better feeling knowing you have helped someone and saved a phone from the horrible stock ROM or possible brick..
Ive done my fair share of helping noobs to help other noobs... Ive also saved a few phones from the trash too
XDA is a community - not a place to rant at people for being a noob - Although there are some hopeless people out there who do not follow the rules, But the majority of us just need some guidance..
The worlds best android developer wasnt born the best... he / she was obviously a noob who learnt from someone else...
The way i see it is that noobs are the future of development so dont hate us
I so agree and am getting ready to learn the cooking game from a friend and great deveolper. He's also getting ready to aquire a sensation and is going to port some of his awesome work from the 3d to the sensation, but make it with ics. Don't know if it'll every see xda because of the drama but it'll be on our teams site. It might make since he does have stuff in evo on xda but I don't know yet.
I'll probably get flamed for this, but that's xda.
The devs don't do this for our convenience. As users who don't pay them a salary, I don't think we're in a position to tell them how they should share what they do. They use their spare time to make something and then choose to share with the masses, which they really didn't have to do. How they choose to present their work should really be up to them IMO.
Besides, if you stick around long enough and read the threads now and then, you'll be able to tell which devs are doing real work versus someone who just forks another person's ROM and throws in some personal tweaks.
Yes most of the ROMs are similar in looks or function, but that's too be expected since everything comes from whatever HTC releases. Each one has its own flavor since each dev has different priorities. Want something totally different? Try one of the WIP AOSP/CM9 builds or maybe MiUI v4.

I think the real question is, WHY are the devs doing it at all? There are motives. I think this thread is basically asking them to spare us. If they decide to pack their ball up and go somewhere else, no big deal. The REAL devs will always stick around.
This thread isn't directed at our "patron devs" but all the no names that pop up with these ridiculous, and misleading, clones while asking for donations.
All in all, no one is forcing us to flash their ROM. It would be nice to have several layers to the dev forum. We need a place to easily see what the pro devs are up to without all the mess in the way. Or, how some genuine developing is coming along...
Matt
I can see it from both sides, All the devs good or bad are still great in their own way.
But some tidying up in the development section wouldnt do any harm... Its like a jumble sale in there, Rummaging around to see whats what. Its ridiculous
Thread cleaned.
Now, you watch your attitude and language or simply face the consequences...
yaddamean, I understand what you mean but I would say the opposite: devs that dont care to be transparent, can host their ROMs on their servers elsewhere. I know this is a quite fundamental difference in views. But i dont get what should be the advantage of being the silent majority.
Good things never come easily.
I bet we would not loose one good dev.
Moved to the about Xda-developers forum as such discussions are not device specific but rather site specific
I agree with u and because of yaddamean and others like him who like to just jump in and flamming ppl. As soon as someone stands up to those kinda ppl, the real supporters of this Site and it's Real dev, get in trouble. That's y ppl leave here too!

when the rule on XDA is:
If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, and HTC is no member, why to hold for only one member the right to post ROM's based on HTC work (RUU, OTA, etc)???
And, when a new RUU of OTA is used for developing a ROM, why have the right to don't share with other developers the source and keep only for himself whatever his name is???
Acceptance of such policy will not help HTC community at all, as already proven and give mods just headache.:crying:
P.S. This question is also for mods, the simply answer is to ...don't answer of close thread of delete it but there are coming many annoying new conflicting rules witch make XDA a private club in stead of Share and Care community!
Thanks Laurentius26, I have change the title of this thread.

Not a stupid but a good question.
It's because those people can't cook, they need to stay ahead a few steps so they have time to
process the hard work of those other developers in there roms (the people who do share there personal development).
It's pathetic what these cookers do to my opinion, but XDA can't force those people to share.
If you ask those cookers to share, they always have excuses like 'I need to protect my sources' blablabla....

(One of the reasons why I go with CM as the only custom rom . Btw this is an old case. And its not just about ROM Cookers but also Kernel "Somethingers" source, patch, mod gatherers ? I do not know how to call them.
Lately there are kernels cooked up with ppl gathering other ppl sources(even through other devices the dev never own and never will) without acknowledgement to the real dev. These ppl having the title "recognized developer" with over 10k thanks feel safe doing so as no one dares to oppose them.
And Laurentius, whats worst, the major community of XDA will back them up in hope for a praise from them or acknowledgement, or a new rom kernel.
Or there is another phenomenon happening, when asking for a fix, feature, just suggesting a functionality. You get an answer "if you dont like it, do not use it" before it was "Ah good idea, I might try it out" or at least "I have no time for this, sorry, but maybe someone else can look into it"
So the real problem is not the Cooker, Gatherer , but the sheepish community not seeing whats happening. That he can exploit something is just his own cleverness.
Trust me, it happens in every forum, even my old one

I want to step back for a second and remember if we judge each individual with the same set of rules.
And let's not forget that someone else had raised this problem some time ago and now supports the OP.
I think my information is right, please correct me if not.
I totally agree, I can understand when some people say I need to protect my sources such as Football and Xmoo, who do a great deal for this community, but still cannot share everything as they do have sources that could be jepordised by releasing things.
But I do agree that ROM Cookers are getting pissy and perhaps lazy or bored with the community and are now doing it for that "Donate" purpose.
Also, whats doing my head in, and what you may not have seen or agree with but people putting "Use Search" in EVERY THREAD that is being made is really doing my head in. If they keep doing that, when people do search they will only find threads with answers saying "Use the Search"

The selfishness is coming because of fame purposes which names I don't want to mention. But honestly they are annoying, and before I flash certain dev's ROMs even if I get certain leaks I rather live without the leaks and have no source of information instead off all this silly *****ing between two high school girls.

The issue here is the latest JB Sense OTA. This was meant for internal testing purposes for HTC Elevate members and we all signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement before we were accepted onto the programme. Now, someone (and I don't know who) still felt the need to leak this file, even after signing a LEGAL DOCUMENT stating they wouldn't so you can ***** all you want but, to be honest, the RUUs shouldn't be leaking if they've come from a confidential source...

Eddy your comment doesn't bring anything to the issue at hand. Please read it again. I wouldn't say he is *****ing.
That it shouldn't leak in the first place is not the issue this is about.
Even with what you say it still means, someone took someone else work and is currently "enriching" himself. Breaking laws in process is just an added bonus. And I guess in this case the mods should close those threads with the leaks. Shouldn't they?
Its about, I will share it, but first download "my" work in 2 days you can play with it too.
So there is no such thing as "BUT" or exceptions. No 2 days of not sharing source if you put a rom out based on. In which case these threads have to be stopped immediately after someone refuses to share it. Or heck even before if it breaks some legal documents.
How come you aren't pursuing this with mods to close those threads down?

If you don't like how things are being handled you can always look on your own for sources and share them as you please (or as you can). Or maybe ask HTC for it.
The cook got hold something, let him use it as he pleases. He should have to do anything just because somebody else is *****ing about it.
If the way he handle things is not good enough for you, just ignore him.
Also, android's kernels are linux's so they have to be open source
Not the same with roms, since htc got closed source stuff inside

A little off topic but I want to mention this one here, cooker/ROM creator baadnews, he was blaming HTC for slow updates a few weeks ago, he was telling why he is going to get s3.. its such a shame that people do not respect the work HTC puts behind sense interface. People like baadnews modify a few things, get reputation on XDA, get some donations and then start blaming htc? The company because of whom you are recognised as a developer in this forum? This is very very unfortunate... at least not expected from a developer like him... anyways...

And FYI I have always supported developers cooking ROM's from scratch with respect for other developers work, I am totally against kang-ers, but this thread is for giving all developers same chance and to make XDA community better!

It's rude to just single out certain people, baad has provided us with lots of good things so don't go have a go at him. If I'm thinking correctly he brought us the first jb sense rom and guide how to flash it.
My personal views is that everyone should share whatever they have/create.
This way people can see how and what is done. The only reason I see for some users not sharing, is like the other user posted, they don't want something they "created" in another ROM as they want all the "attention" to themselves, or they are scared that their ROM will become less popular, which I don't see as a problem, if someone prefers another ROM fine, let them use it.
If everybody was open about everything and shared, the rom/kernel development would be of twice the level it is at currently, it would benefit everyone, roms/kernels would have twice the amount of features.
But we still have those individuals who want to be ahead of everyone else and look "the best".
Just my two cents.
I really think this thread should be closed and deleted. It's only full of rant.
And it looks like we aren't even sticking to the subject and we are discussing other situations/developers.
Nevertheless, we are all very ungratefull people. I am really looking forword to see your work, RUU's, leak's etc.

Its not rude, its a fact. I told what he did, there may be others like him too... I saw him, I pointed out the mistake, nothing against him... main point was to tell people to stop complaining, respect what HTC have given us, one x is a masterpiece

1. It's not up to me to get threads closed, I was just stating that that specific OTA should never have seen the light of day
2. The OP isn't exactly clear
If you're on about people holding files until they have their ROM out first then I agree that it's a bit wrong but, at the end of the day, it's there choice
Decided not to upgrade officially to any newer version… so that I could easily root onto a custom ROM.
That was a year ago now—
Exploits available for my ROM (from running 'X-Ray'):
ZergRush
Gingerbreak
Backup program planning to use (once ROOTed):
- Titanium backup? [feel free to recommend alternates]
Planning to use one of these ROMs (feel free to suggest others):
[ROM][3-2-13]UNOFFICIAL MIUI V4.1 3.2.1 for HTC Desire Z [JB4.1]
[ROM][Feb/01/2013] AOSP - Jelly Bean 4.2.1 - Build 09
Can you recommend a good—i.e.: fast and stable—mod ROM for my Desire Z?
Thanks for all suggestions,
Alec Taylor
BTW: How do you think the speed compares between a mod Jelly Bean mod and stock Froyo?
PS: I still want to be able to use Google Apps, such as GMail, Market &etc.
huh, first of all best roms and recommend me a rom questions arent really to be asked, your best to search a bit and then try a few out to see whats best.
while your at it search out the xda wiki to see how to root your phone, the ways you mentions probably wont work and if they do there are far better ways now
comparing across versions of andorid is hard to do, especially 2.2 to 4.1, things start becoming to relative to answer. but yes you can always use google apps in android roms, gmail and market (playstore) have been around since android 1.0 and i doubt they will get dumped
Can you recommend better ways of ROOTing the phone?
Also, what difference in battery-life should I expect; moving from stock Froyo to modded Jelly Bean?

Why do people answer with this stupid answer?
He asking people to post their (good and fast) ROMs so he can see what most people use and works for them.
By your logic, the best ones are the ones whos thread is the smallest because it has no bugs. Or is it the biggest because there is always active development? Who knows?
Just recommend him a ROM.
Anyways, personally I was using Andromadus Mimicry v1.5.0 (ICS) Pretty nice update from latest stable CM. CM is still a BIT more stable but AM and its ICS are great.
Just got my phone back from repair and Ill problably try out a 4.2 ROM as Ive been DYING to run it. If not Ill problalby go back to AM.
Or you could go the demkantor way and flash and format and flash and format and flash and format and flash and.....well you get the point and be bored all day configuring different ROMs over and over again....
Also battery life tends to be better than ANY stock ROM
seriously.... other than being against xda rules SEE HERE it is a pointless question that clutters thread all over xda.
i also like the conclusion youve made about what my logic is, and if you really think about it i never even came close to implying that rather the opposite as i suggestion to do some homework first.... a little reading goes along way.
also i did attempt to answer the questions as best as i could without holding his hand through the process of rooting and choosing a rom, being pointed in a direction to do some research is far better than saying yeah root the lazy way and install mimicry, dont learn how to use your phone and when things dont seem right start another thread on a simple subject that has been covered dozens of times in the past month, dont search, the search button is for losers.
and again why answer with what rom to use? maybe this user is in need of the best camera possible or the absolute most cutting age rom, neither is mimicry, although its a great rom it might be terrible for this guy.
asking the best rom can be akin to asking whats the best music, and then what artist, then what cd to get, then what track to listen to. and no thats not going too far as that is exactly what happens on xda every day.... "
how should i root, now what rom to flash, now what mods should i use, is this the kernel for me, any good apps i should get, how about a radio i hear i should change that should i?"
so yeah sorry for rambling on here and wasting more electronic ink but please try not to take me out of context, i try to be a very helpful person here and give back as much as ive been given from xda but its the simple things that people dont learn or at least refuse to that bugs me
*end rant

Not actually against XDA rules, its just viewed fouled on this section. And BTW, I made a thread like that (and Im going to as soon as I charge my Desire Z) and I did not get any warning for it, so it is hardly enforced.
You actually answered your own question with "why answer what ROM to use?" If the OP wanted a iPhone like expirence, people would problably recommend him MIUI ROM. If the OP wanted a better ROM based on what his HTC stock one is, people would recommend him a Sense ROM.
Now, what I DO NOT approve of is a thread like:
Title: What ROM do I get?
Message:
Hello
What ROM do I put on my phone?
Thanks
No. That, I do NOT agree with as it shows the user has had no thought and/or hasnt even tried.
And of course asking the best music is vague. But asking the best artist BECAUSE I LISTEN TO THIS TYPE OF MUSIC is NOT vague. So very bad example.
Also, remember that XDA has over the years gone from very talented and technical developers to hobbiests to complete n00bs that want to do this and get it over with. Not that that is a good thing....
In every forum there is post from the moderators saying not and it because of your very last line, they're trying not to allow this form to turn into a wasteland of the same pointless thread over and over, trying to get people to search a bit and get answers on their own. If you feel that's not a good thing then why promote it?
And yes the genre is android and the artist is the vision, so we already don't need to answer that. And then it comes down to the album and the track to listen to... but why keep explaining my metaphor, you obviously disagree so whatever.
either way it is a waste and the less crap that's all over these threads the easier it is for the new people to sift through making the question less necessary to even ask.
But go ahead and keep asking and answering them for obviously its better to turn this forum into clutter, I am the one in the wrong here and should keep my mouth shut

Given measurable metrics which mod ROM and ROOTing method would you recommend?

Non sequitur.
You are comparing subjective things such as music with objective things such as metrics.
I asked a very specific question—with a single follow-up—asking a very well defined question.
To reiterate:
Given measurable metrics—battery_life>=current_ROM, stability>=current_ROM, upgrade_version==Jelly Bean, phone_model=Desire Z, current_ROM==2.2.1—which mod ROM and ROOTing method would you recommend?
Thanks for all suggestions
....best rom is subjective....very subjective....done squabaling on that
Best rooting method is any using gfree to exploit which involves downgrading first, search out the xda wiki or the cyanogen wiki or strawmetals pdf guide, all have been covered many times in this thread and if your search button isn't working use google. Pick a guide, read, understand, follow every step, if you get stuck, read some more, if still confused ask
You will have vastly different experiences across different android platforms, niether you or I will know what os to run for you until you try a bunch, battery life is determined more by how you use your phone and how good your battery is rather than what rom you have. Search and you will easily find many thread giving tips on improvements
Happy flashing

So you want Jelly Bean, and for crying out loud it's not like there's a billion different JB ROMs to choose from... If this was the nexus 4 forum, maybe this question would be slightly less pointless.
So atm in terms of JB we've got 4.1 and 4.2 . Step 1 - do you have to have the latest? If yes, easy peasy, go for Andromadus CM10.1 for features or Andromadus AOSP 4.2 or Fyodor's 4.2 for speed, then pick Fyodor's if you needs the latest kernel stuff.
You don't mind not having the latest? Go for 4.1, get Jelly Belly for stability, MIUI for... MIUI stuff, if you want that, Andromadus CM10 for features or Andromadus AOSP 4.1 for speed. Don't go for Fyodor's, he stopped 4.1 at build 4 or 5. Also don't go for my PA port, atm it's ****.
For rooting... What demkantor said.
Wow, that logic was hard. I'm gonna go get a cuppa whilst my brain recharges.
