[Q] Can't update my Evo! Can anyone help? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not sure if maybe it has a custom rom on it (bought it second hand) which is why the update fails or if I need to update it via the computer.
I searched for an update and found update 1.32.651.6 (13mb.14mb) Fota update is available. When it starts installing it goes about half way and I get a red question mark and the phone restarts itself and when I try updating it again it says that the update was corrupt and re-downloads it and this has happened around 9 times now.
This is my software info:
2.1-update1 (I want 2.2!)
Kernel is2.6.29-a2443432 htc-kernel and18-2 #1
software version 1.32.651.1
I'm using hardware 0002

Looks like you have stock without root. Try SimpleRoot and gain root access and nand unlock, then flash a custom rooted 2.2 ROM. There are also stock rooted ROMs as well if you like the stock Sprint feel.

Thanks I was already on my way to root because of this which is sort of funny imo. Couldn't get official Sprint 2.2 so I'm forced to root haha. Well I was planning on rooting anyway, but later on when speed would become an issue, but this will be great now so thanks.

Root 1.32 or upgrade to 1.47 then Root?

The Phone is prompting me to upgrade to 1.47...I'm holding off. Which version should I root?
I had a question / thought about that too...but I didn't get that upgrade notification, is your phone rooted already?
Root the current version THEN update using a ROOTED rom from here DO NOT DO THE OVER THE AIR UPDATE

stang doug, this route is the best..

It still puts ya at 2.1.. But really is solid.
This us a replacement phone....I was upgrading to a custom 2.2 from available and the phone bricked. I was lucky to get another one today. Just want to be carefully this time!

Ok I did the update to 1.47...went smooth....I rooted from 1.47 before with no problem...one step at a time I guess...still can't believe I bricked the last one...ok so what's the best/easiest root method now with nand unlock? I fumbled my through it the first time...just want to make sure I know exactly what I'm doing this time.

Install the old hboot. If that doesn't make sense, get the simpleroot app and use that.

I had trouble with Simpleroot. If i stick with this hboot version, will I have problems? Also I just succsesfully installed the latest Wimax and radio updates.
Follow a post in this forum that describes full root with nand unlocking using a more manual method.

I did, but kept getting main version older while trying to update PC36IMG. Maybee I'm SOL. Should I not bother to download and flash custom roms?
I tried 3 root methods last night and I could only get unrevoked3 to work.

Just got simplerrot to work!!! So it reset my softwre to a earlier version, and flashed clockmod recovery. Question is do I need to reflash the wimax update? I allready am running the latest radio version. Don't want to brick this time!
Oh my bad. Looks like the radio and wimax reverted to earlier versions....is it ok to update thm to the current release? Still running the stock rom.
ok, dosen't look like I have root access...but I have access to nandroid?
Well I don't know if this is right but I used Simpleroot to revert the software and get the older version of HBOOT and used unrevoked to get root permission. Looks like rooted apps work, I can back and recover with nandroid, maybe some one can chime in to make sure I'm on the right track, still need to know if it's safe to upgrade the radio and wimax.
So here's where I sit:

i had my evo rooted, and looked for 2.2 through software update and couldnt get it. now i factory restored and it still wont find the update, it also says i have 2.1 update-1 so idk what to do i really want froyo. thanks!
You should have stayed rooted and flashed a stock rom from the development section.

not very helpful considering the fact that a factory reset most probably still has him in a root state. You either need to do a manual unroot to get back to a true factory reset or follow these instructions as an easier way:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-4g-roms-hacks/19278-how-unroot-return-stock.html
When you choose the RUU...use the 1.47 one...then after complete you should be able to OTA Froyo.
Wouldn't it be easier to just keep your root and download one of the newer 2.2 roms and keep root. There's even stock rooted roms.
well i the only reason i rooted to begin with was for the 2.2 update. i think if there is a like newer versions of 2.2 without htc sense then i will flash to that. does anyone know of that? a 2.2 rom thats plain android. witht he cameras and bluetooth and 4g working also pretty stable?
Yup, fusionx has a wicked fast, snappy, and stable rom without sense. Check it out in development section. Download it, do a complete wipe, and flash it. Make sure to flash new radios and wimax as well. They will be listed under the rom probably. These need to be flashed one at a time. Good luck and have fun.

CM6 is as close to ASOP as you'll ever get. It is super nice. No 4G or Hdmi yet, it will be added eventually.
Do not update to 2.2 through sprint. There is absolutely no point. Flash the rooted 2.2 stock rom, it is the exact same thing except you get to keep your root.

[Q] 2.2 tomorrow confirmed. am i ready?

hey guys, so VZM has officially announced that the Incredible will be getting froyo starting tomorrow! woo finally.
anyway, im concerned with making sure all of my software is ready for the OTA without any issues.
i am currently rooted, S-Off running stock 2.1update 1. im also running the leaked ota with 720p, 2.05 radio and the upgraded H-boot.
with all of the above will i be all set to get the OTA update and update while keeping all my apps and data as well as maintain S-off?
thanks for the help guys,

i also have clockwork recovery running, so i believe i need to install the stock recovery image? if so how exactly do i do that?

same sort of concern for me, I just rooted via UnRevoked 3 the other day and am going to do Forever tonight on both of our incredibles. When I flash the update, how do I regain super-user permissions in the OTA FROYO? (the update.zip) file they talk about? Any ideas (still a bit new at this). Want to be able to continue wi-fi tether again for free!
So Im rooted with unrevoked3 and forever. Didn't mess with my radio, or any kernels. So since I'm on unrevoked forever does that mean the ota will be pushed to my phone as is?

I'm a total noob but I installed the original leaked OTA upgrade (720p) with Radio version 2.05. Then after not being able to find a bunch of Apps I rooted and installed the leaked 8/1 Froyo. So now in about phone I have:
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband: 2.05.00.06.11
Kernel: 2.6.32.15-g5e1ab8b ([email protected]#1
Build Number: 3.16.605.0 CL203589 release-keys
Software Number: 3.16.605.0
If the OTA Froyo gets pushed to my phone is it safe for me to accept and upgrade? I realize root might be lost but I'm most concerned about the radio thing. I've heard of people bricking their phone if they upgrade that incorrectly. Will the new OTA upgrade the radio (to 2.15?) - and I am I good to go?
Thanks for any info and sorry for my lack of experience.....

thanks i just wanted to make sure I had everything ready to go and it really was as easy as re-installing clock-work after the official OTA to gain root access again!

Just to clarify this: You must have the stock recovery BEFORE you accept the OTA. Otherwise, the new radio won't flash and features will not work. There are instructions on how to install the stock recovery with s-off here.
I'm rooted and running 2.2 that was leaked a month or so ago with radio 2.05...will I get the OTA update and, if so, is there anything I will need to do different than anyone else who is running stock 2.1 before I do the update?

Sry I ready this after I alrready submited my last post...but I have the exact same set-up as you Jay...I have the same concerns. I've heard some people saying that we have to revert back to 2.1 before accepting the update...is this true?
Ok im a total noob at this.
I am currently rooted with forever
i have:
firmware: 2.1 update1
baseband: 1.00.03.04.06 (had 2.15 before)
Will i not receive the update if i don't have stock recovery?
I want to avoid wiping all my information from my phone (which i understand flashing the stock recovery does)
again sorry im a noob.
if someone could write out a quick step by step it would be GREATLY appreciated.
You'll receive the notification to update I assume. But you'll need stock recovery to actually go through with it. Then after install put clock work back on...

So the general consensus is not to do a OTA update if rooted because you will lose root.
OK, what if I dont mind losing root.
I am rooted (ive used the unrEVOked 3.21: one-click root for Froyo method).
And I have never installed any custom ROMs.
(i.e. I am running on Stock. Not rooted Stock ROM! Just rooted Stock. Im not even sure if there is a difference but just wanted to say it so its clear.)
Wouldnt it be possible to be rooted , perform on OTA update (which will make me lose root), then root again (or wait however long until a new root method is discovered for the current software version)?
Please advise.

That is based on the assumption that there will be a guaranteed method to regain root user access on the device. It could take hours, days, weeks, months, or even never.
I would recommend flashing the stock 3.70 update for root users here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251
Now you still have the update, but you have retained root user access.
Some feedback, in case others find it helpful.
So while rooted, I decided to accept the 3.70 OTA update. The phone downloaded, rebooted, then tried to install it. It failed.
In case others don't know, I believe it failed because a custom recovery was recognized, Clockworkmod. (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Nevertheless, since I wanted the 3.7 OTA update (i.e. actually through update and not flashed) my only option was to set s-on then unroot. The procedures to set s-on and unroot from unrevoked website worked flawlessly.
Afterwards, I tried to apply the OTA, and this time it installed.
So I am now unrooted, and with 3.70 OTA. In a few days I'm going to try the new unrevoked v3.31. Hopefully it will root me.

Sorry novanosis85, i think my last post was a bit unclear.
I wanted to unroot, so I could apply the OTA update.
I guess I was trying to provide some feedback for others who may have similar questions like i did. Namely...
1. can I apply OTA when rooted? what i discovered was, "no" because the update process will discovery a custom recovery.
2. whats is required to be able to apply the OTA? s-on, and unroot procedure, then apply OTA. Update will indeed be applied but you will be unrooted.
Again, I hope this helps others.

HARDWARE doesn't change due to a SOFTWARE update. PERIOD. Firmware can and does.
The OTA update was leaked several weeks prior to the official update, why would you have thought that it was a Android 3.0 update? It's well documented that Android 3.0 is a tablet release. There was dev who ported it to the EVO and almost nothing worked.
I don't know a whole lot about this I'm learning as I go but my phone had a ota update and my hardware was 0003 and now its 0004 but I shouldn't have done that I messed up bad but what I put is what it says my firmware is

No, it definitely was not. What you're saying is impossible. No matter what you think it was before, if it is 0004 now, it was 0004 before the update too. But it doesn't really matter one way or the other.
I mean this with all due respect to you and in care if your phone.
Unroot until you read around some more and gain a good understanding of what you're doing.
you guys are all missing the key piece of info here, the op said he unrooted. this is how he rolled back to 1.47 firmware. one can assume he flashed a stock rom to unroot and he had to of flashed the 1.47 rom probably from the unroot your phone in 2 steps thread. anyhow op, if you are not unrooted with s-on and you take the ota you will be stuck with it until someone finds a way to root it. if you want the newest ota then download the rooted version from this very site. re-root your evo then flash it.
on a side note, i do not understand why people do things that they have no clue what they are doing. if you do not understand it or can not problem solve your way out of an issue then you probably shouldn't attempt it. im not claiming to be an expert but i can google with the best of em and find the fix to about anything i could screw up.
