Try these settings they worked on mine
incoming:
Protocol - pop
put email address in and user name put email address in again
put in password
pop server - pop3.live.com
security type - SSL port 995
outgoing:
tick log in required
put email address in as username
put in password
smtp server - smtp.live.com
security type - TLS
server port - 587
Hey presto!!
I set my hotmail up the day I got my desire and it works perfectly. Shouldn't need to put any extra settings, just add email account and password which is recognised automatically. Just had to add one tick box to have items deleted from server now working fine.

Yeah, this forum is great!
You can change the interval at the settings as well.
Btw, something else you can try is to let Gmail download the hotmail e-mails. But you cannot set the interval unfortunately. (You can set this up on your computer by going into the gmail settings, Accounts and Import settings, and then click on the 'import mail and contacts'. And then you have to finish a few steps to set it up.)
Too bad it's not instant like gmail though.
I now forward my main e-mail account to my gmail. This way I don't need the interval pop3 checking and I get my e-mail directly via the gmail push. Great stuff!
Unfortunately this is not possible with hotmail, you can only forward to other hotmail/live adresses. Unless you use the paid version of hotmail, then it's possible I believe (not sure).
But! For everything else it's great!
Create a folder/label, setup a filter and everything is nicely categorized as well
The gmail app is a bit more basic however.. different from the htc e-mail application for sure. Oh, and the standard gmail icon doesn't show the number of unread e-mails, so for that you need to get a widget called 'Gmail Unread Count'.
So i've just picked up the desire, have setup hotmail but it's only pop, is there no imap support? I don't fancy having to manually mark something as read each time...
Is there anyway I can the HTC email widget to display my googlemail account as I've been trying to set it up bit without success?
I couldn't use theHTC mail widget for gmail either. I could setup hotmail no problem. Is it possible that gmail must be used through the gmail app only?
Looks like which is a shame as I prefer the HTC email layout
add account (active sync)
email address - enter your full email address (eg. [email protected])
server address "m.google.com"
domain - leave blank
username - enter your full email address (eg. [email protected])
password - your password
select SSL
hope this helps
it is possible to use the HTC widget for gmail yea.
First you have to go into gmail on your pc then settings (top right)
Then choose "Forwarding and POP/IMAP"
Then choose "Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)" or "Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on" deppending on what you want.
Then hit "save changes" at the bottom of the page.
now on the desire:
put the widget down.
choose to manually enter settings.
All default settings should be fine, just enter your gmail user and pass.
Then all should be good =]
I've tried both comments above, I get to the screen asking what data I want to sync but when i click finish setup, I just get an error message saying failed to create the account, pls try again later

You want the pop3 option on your phone, not the activesync one. Just put in your google username/password. Make sure you have a data connection to the internet (3g/wifi).
I suggest using IMAP. Add the mail widget to one of the homescreens then tap to make an account. Choose pop/IMAP and you want IMAP.
Then add in your gmail (googlemail email and password. Make sure you are connected via wifi or your mobile connection and you should be all set....

Well, i said pop3 but yes, it's techinically the Other(pop3/imap) option. If you are setting up gmail then you don't have to choose manual, and therefore you don't actually select either pop3/imap, just enter your username and password...
Nope, neither of these work either
Try putting in "googlemail" instead of "gmail" where your email address and username goes.
That seemed to solve my problem.
I was putting googlemail but tried gmail and all working ok now so cheers

no problem. strange that some people need to use gmail and others need to use googlemail to get this to work
Gmail IMAP working like a charm for me.
Thinkin may stick to the gmail app now though as tend to get notified of new emails quicker then the HTC widget.
I have one gmail account through the gmail app and another gmail account through the HTC mail via ActiveSync. both push through as fast as each other imo.

After trying various email options with my Desire, using Exchange ActiveSync protocol between Gmail and the standard mail app seems the best of several poor options. It isn't working quite as I expected though. It seems to be similar to IMAP in the way it displays the correct emails in various folders as a copy of what's in gmail on the web. However, it only copies folder contents that I've changed by other means (PC or webmail). If I move, create or delete emails using the mail app, that isn't then reflected in my account in the web.
Is this just the way it is supposed to be or should it work the same as IMAP, and if so, why isn't it? Any suggestions appreciated.

I use exchange with the HTC Mail application with my Google account as well. When I move or delete messages, they get deleted on gmail.com in 2-3 seconds.
Maybe something is wrong with your configuration, you sure you have it on push? Mail app -> Settings -> Send/Receive -> Push

Thanks for replying. I'm glad it works ok for you, as it gives me some hope.
Yes I do have it set to push. I also have the domain set to Google and my username set as my email address, and SSL is on.
Are you in the UK? I am, and my email address is therefore googlemail rather than gmail, so I'm wondering if my login details should be also. I'll give that a go now and see if it makes any difference.
[Edit] I've tried changing the domain of my username to gmail instead of googlemail, but it wouldn't create the account. So I'm stuck with what else to try.
Well somehow it now works fine. The only difference is that my email address (not my username) now has the gmail domain and not googlemail. I had to re-create the account to change the settings, so either there was something wrong that resolved itself when I did that, or the difference in the email address makes a difference.
Hopefully that may help someone else.
Well now it isn't working again. Is nobody else having problems with their Desire and Google Exchange?
Here are my settings, and as I said works perfectly on my unbranded desire.
Email address: *******@gmail.com
Server address: m.google.com
Domain: google.com
username: *******gmail.com
CHECKED - This server requires SSL
In my account sync settings I'm syncing MAIL + Calendar.
Just for the record, I'm not using a task killer, which could possibly interfere?

It gave me an error when I tried to set my username to @gmail - Probably because I'm in the UK where Googlemail is used rather than gmail. Although if you wrote to me using @gmail, I'd still get it. So it's all a bit confusing. Besides, it did all work yesterday. I don't have the domain set the same as you, I just have "google" as I read elsewhere that was correct, even though that alone isn't actually a domain.
I wish I could edit these settings without deleting then re-creating the account, but there doesn't seem to be a way to. I'll do that again though to match your settings, if it lets me.
I'm not using a task killer by the way.
Tried using my Googlemaill account and says it can't do it - bit annoying but I'm happy with the gmail app tbh, just thought I'd try it out!

If you use @gmail as your username, it'll probably 'half' work. Mine is back up but it still isn't working properly. I'm not sure if it's better than using the Google mail app or not now, as I've gone between that and the mail app and K-9 so many times now, I forget what was wrong with each one. LOL. I think one of the major issues with the Gmail app is lack of copy/paste.
I rarely send email, I just have it to receive and then use my PC to get any attachments if needed...I'll stick with it for now!
I've found something similar. If I delete an e-mail on Webmail or IMAP (using Windows Live Mail) it doesn't disappear on the HTC Mail App (using Gmail Exchange ActiveSync). I have to delete it manually again. I've started a thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=676890
Which is odd as both the native Gmail App and IMAP (using the same HTC Mail App) do.

You can, just go to "More" and then "Settings" in the HTC Mail App or click on Exchange in "Accounts and Sync". You can change it all there, except for the domain (oddly that seems to be only available when you first create the account). Which incidentally, Google say you should leave it blank:

This is the Windows Mobile instructions but Google intend you use this feature primarily on Windows Mobile handhelds.

Has anyone tried setting up any Android phone with a Google Apps hosted domain account instead of a gmail.com account? Is it even possible, and would you get push e-mail?
Could just try with my G1, but it'd require a wipe and setting up, and I'm kinda tied up at work at the moment. If someone else has done it, let me know please.
It worked for me. I have both my gmail and my domain email hosted by google pushed to my phone. The gmail app can support multiple gmail accounts
Awesome - mind if I ask how you added the second e-mail address to the GMail app? That's what I was trying to find, and couldn't figure it out.

in gmail app, hit menu > accounts > add account button
i dont have a gmail hosted address that doesn't have @gmail.com to test it but that is how you add second gmail account
This is correct and works for me with @somethingelse. The first account is the default however and is the one that other item sync with. To change the default you have to reset.

In the normal email app (not Gmail) I can set up my email as POP and everything is fine but when I set up as Exchange, the option for 'sender name' is gone. The only thing I can do is name the account which has no affect on the senders name that shows up when I email someone. When I send an email my name shows as the first part of my email address (the part before the @ symbol).
When I send email from my providers web mail it shows correctly. The problem only exists when setting up my phone to use Exchange.
Many thanks in advance!
Hi!
I believe this is tied to the way an Exchange server works. The Email app will use the name set by the Exchange administrator.

Who is the Exchange administrator? So how can I change the name setting?
The Exchange administrator is your email provider.
It's possible your sender's name is automatically updated in Exchange when you modify your name in a web interface from your provider -- usually a "Settings" or "Account info" or something like that setting page. You may want to try this, if your email provider offers you a webmail interface and you can cange your account's info.
If your sender's name does not get updated or if you don't have access to that kind of settings from your webmail -- for example, it is usually the case for an enterprise email account --, then you might want to talk directly to your email provider's administrators to see what they can do for you.

As I mentioned, when I send email from the web interface (Webmail) it shows my name fine. I can access my account name and info on my web provider's site (Shaw) and change it to whatever I want but email sent from every account set up with Exchange on my phone strips the name and adds the first part of the email address before the @ symbol. I've spent a long time talking to their 'tech' guys with no help. They say it is a setting in my phone.
Anyone?
Does anyone have any other thoughts on how to fix this?
Anyone?
Nobody has ever seen this?
According to Google, I'm not the only one who has experienced this but it seems that nobody has figured out a solution...

Have you tried deleting the account and then reentering the account? I think you may be presented this when you set up the account but not later (I have three accounts and I remember being prompted for something like name you want to appear, etc.
Yes, I've deleted and recreated that account. I never had an option to enter a name; only a name for the account which doesn't show up in sent emails...

Too bad ( it was just a thought). I just checked my exchange account and, if I go in to settings, I get an option for "Your Name" and another for " Signature." Not sure why yours does not give you the same options. Have you tried a third-party app that can handle exchange server accounts? I had to use one when my office switched their software and it wouldn't connect to Android devices.
good luck.

Based on Google reading, if you're quick enough, you should be able to see this "Your Name" setting in your Exchange's email preferences. And if you're very quick, you might be able to access this setting and modify it. I myself did not succeed in this operation.
How to alternative
The only way (as of now and to my knowledge) to change the "sender name" in the stock android mail app while still using the exchange setup (Hotmail service, or any other mail service that dont sync your correct sender name with the mail server) is as follows (requires root):
- Set up your account and assure yourself that all basic features function properly (sending-, receiving mails, etc.)
- get a SQLite editor app (of your choice, Google Play is your 'friend')
- launch the SQLite editor and find the stock android mail app (com.android.email) and explore its databases (*.db)
- navigate and open "EmailProvider.db"
- open the "Account" table and change the "senderName" string to your desired "sender name" and save
- at this point you are done, and its advised to reboot your phone or completely restart the mail app
Voilà!
