Would rooting get me around a persistent safe mode? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

EDIT - I have inadvertently gone down the route of rooting.... now it's a case of damage limitation! :/
Hi all..
Just as the title says really.. and further to this thread.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=762033
My partners Desire will not come out of Safe Mode, I took the phone into a T-mobile shop (UK) today and they were useless. They amazingly advised me to try reflashing the ROM because all their tech guys would do anyway and I'd have to wait 28 days.
Frustrated by this I thought I'd reflash anyway with a signed T-mobile ROM and used version 1.21. The flash was fine but the Desire still boots into Safe Mode. I am going to try the WWE ROM in the hope that there might be a difference in it to the T-Mobile one. It's really frustrating because I know the buttons have worked when I managed to once get the phone to boot normally.
The next option is to root and install a custom rom, however if that fails I need to be able to put everything back to stock so that T-mobile will still replace it under warranty... any advice or suggestions please folks?

The WWE ROM would not flash.

Try to get the phone back in factory-state. Power the phone down and then:
Performing a factory reset using phone buttons
If you cannot turn on your phone or access the phone settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using the buttons on the phone.
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
2. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button..
3. Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE, and then press POWER.
4. Press VOLUME UP to start the factory reset.

I did Factory Reset when the phone had TMO UK 1.15 and that didn't resolve the Safe Mode problem, are you saying to factory reset again with but now with TMO 1.21 and then try reflashing with WWE 1.21 then?

Nope that didn't work:
Error 131 Customer ID Error
Going to try flashing back to TMO 1.15.

Hmm now I am struggling.... with TMO 1.15 I now get
Error 140 Bootloader Version Error

Have you tried getting the zip of the rom putting it on the root of you sd card and changing the name to pb99img then booting to recovery and selecting fastboot?
This wipes everything and installs the rom, you need the zip to do it though, not sure where you can get it for the TMO rom, you can get the generic WWE zip from shipped roms, you might need a gold card.

I can get to the bootloader and clear storage/factory reset but this is for TMO UK ROM 1.21.... which in itself is probably fine except there is this persistent Safe Mode problem.
However I have screwed up I think... basically I had Unrevoked running, what I didn't know or expect was that the Unrevoked app would update my bootloader immediately after I updated the hboot USB drivers... oops!!
So now whether I like it or not I have the Unrevoked boot loader.
The Desire still start TMO 1.21 but again Safe Mode... as a result Titanium will not run and neither will BusyBox so even if I did now decide to try and install a custom rom it would appear that two of the key steps can not be carried out because of Safe Mode grrr!

Ah that's weird... no more Unrevoked bootloader.... unless it dioesn't actually flash the Desire?

1) Do you have a goldcard in your phone? (Customer ID suggests no or that it isn't configured properly)
2) Reboot into bootloader (hold vol down and power on) and try the RUU again (should fix incorrect bootloader)

Unrevoked flashes a new recovery, so if you selected "Recovery" from the bootloader, you would find Clockword Mod recovery.
I would first suggest that you make your SD card into a gold card. Use http://android.modaco.com/content/software/308798/pc-application-goldcardtool/ as the easy way to make a gold card (all it requires is that you put your phone in USB Debugging mode and then download the right file) to turn your SD card into gold card.
Then boot your phone to booloader and run the RUU on the pc.

Thanks iinga, going to try Gold Card now.
will update here shortly..

Ok keep me updated. Include any (if you get them) error codes

Good luck

Tried to flash WWE 1.21 and still get Error 131 - ID Error.
The Gold Card is in and as far as I am aware properly configured with the img that was emailed to me? any idea's please?

Did you use gold card tool to create the code and patch the SD card?
You could always try another microSD card and create that into a gold card (you'd need to download another img unique to the card)

I did but I think I used the wrong code... just trying again... seems to have got further at least.

Yippee... WWE 1.21 installed... Boo hoo still SAFE MODE!
There is a system update so I'll apply that as well and see what happens.

Is the menu button stuck down?

Yep no change to the buttons
Just applying the latest update..
I don't get this safe mode, I was under the impression it only kicked in if untested/trusted software was used, perhaps there is a hardware issue with the buttons that is intermittent?

Tmobile Broken Update to Froyo

HI there - I have got myself in a pickle and would appreciate some help...
I have a TMobile branded Desire. I wanted to get Froyo so did the following:
1. Got a new mem card and created a Gold Card
2. Installed RUU_Bravo_HTC _WWE_1.21.405.2 _Radio_32.36.00.28U _4.06.00.02_2 _release_126984_signed
3. Replaced the Gold Card with my normal mem card (which has all my pics etc; on)
4. Ran OTA Froyo update.
I think the FROYO install didnt complete fully as it now randomly reboots by iteslf (every 2 or 3 mins) I have no signal, cant connect via USB to my pc (to downgrade) - all in all it's not exactly bricked but I cant really use it all.
Please help Anyone any ideas?

Will your phone boot up completely before rebooting? Can you get into recovery mode (vol down + power)?
Yes it will completely boot up. And yes I can get into recovery mode. Do you have a cunning plan?
The easiest thing to do would be to do a factory reset (somewhere in settings or from quickboot menu), although if indeed the flash didn't complete successfully this is unlikely to work, it would be the quickest if it did.
Failing that you will probably need to re-flash the device. You will need your goldcard and a rooted update file (zip format as I don't think you can install RUU from recovery).
It is likely that you will need to re-root your device first though..
What is your HBOOT version?
Thanks for the replies so far...
I've already tried a Factory Reset and that made no difference...
Yes I think a zip file is the way forward but I am struggling to work out which one and how I think install it.
My HBOOT is 0.80.0000
Also you mention I will need to re-root my device but I didnt root it in the first place.
Thanks again for help so far. Fingers crossed you can point me in the right direction...
I had this problem. Go download:
http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip
Then rename the file to update.zip and copy onto your goldcard - then insert into phone. Now go to recovery mode, select recovery, then when the red triangle thing comes up hold the volume down button when pressing the power button. You should be able to update now.
Oh and I didn't have my phone rooted.

Sorry, was assuming it was rooted and that the update un-rooted it. Since your un-rooted I think the link that er_yeah posted is the official zip update from HTC, that should do the trick.
Thanks er_yeah. Tried as you said. Went into recovery but cant get rid the red triangle thingy. Vol down and power doesnt do anything... Maybe I didn't put the update.zip file in the right place. I just copied it to the root of the sd card. There weren't any other files there - jsut folders (Rosie something was one of them).

The problem is you tried to run an update without your goldcard.
You will be able to restore the phone by inserting your goldcard, booting into fastboot mode (back + power) and running this RUU:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...3.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed.exe

That RUU takes you directly to Froyo.
I used the original RUU as someone on Tmobile has updated to Froyo using it...
Anyway the phone is now debranded and on Froyo and working! So thank you everyone for helping out. I think my key mistake was trying to update OTA without the Goldcard. I have learned my lesson and wont repeat it.
OK I had a slight issue that I had lost all my text messages and Notes I had created in ColourNotes - but this seems like a small price to pay for what was at one point an unusable phone!
Thanks again guys!
Sorry for disappearing, glad that you got it sorted out!

[Q] I'm an idiot! Desire bricked.

I've bricked my desire, after I installed uvoc 2.6.32 for Sense Roms everything was ok. THEN I want to instal some mod that changes the battery indicator to some circle with % show inside. My desire started to loop after "quietly brilliant" In attack
of panic I've formatted system and boot. now I can onl get in recovery mode. My m8 is going to give it to my operator's for warranty sayin something like "I don't know what happened i get it off the charger and it was like this"
Or maybe any chance to repair at home ?
Sorry for my bad english.
Do you have a custom recovery installed? If so just install another rom!
If not just run an RUU and return it to stock and start again.
I don't think you need to return it to HTC until you have tried a few things.
I am pretty sure this could be fixed yourself!!

1. Do you have a custom recovery installed (Amon-Ra or Clockworkmod)? If so, it is possible to access the SD card over USB from Windows. The option will be "Mount USB Storage" or something similar. If you have a custom recovery I think you *should* just be able to flash a rom from there!
2. An RUU is a software update from HTC (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667). Where did you get your Desire? Was it unbranded or did you get it from a network (O2, Vodafone etc)? Also what HBOOT do you have? To find this, power off your device, press (and hold) BACK and press power. It should say HBOOT at the top and have a number beside.
Also, I don't suppose you have an old Nandroid backup or anything?
Stu
same thing happenend to me once, first off all, dont panic
what the guy above me says, do that, plug it in via usb and you'll be able to mount it, then just throw a new rom on there: MIUI, LEEDROID, OPENDESIRE.
whatever you want.
install that zip via the recovery menu and lead a long and happy life

The phone was bought from a network "play" (poland) it was sim free from stock and no sighn of any branding on it.
I will be able to check the hboot version today evening.
I have an "Mount USB Storage" option in recovery. clockworld.zip is on sd too.
I will try to get to sd and install a stock rom (i tried to reinstal the kernal ive dowloaded from xda) but nothhing happens.
It doesnt even try to boot when I press the power key (without the volume down arrow) it acts like I would use the power + v. down)
before I use format boot and format system it was looped as I said before.
First, download this RUU file:
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed.exe
Then, turn your phone on whilst holding the back button and you should get into FASTBOOT. Connect your phone to your PC and then run that RUU. If it works it will reset the phone back to stock

If you can get into Clockwork mod then you can put any ROM you like (Defrost, Cyanogen, MIUI etc) on the SD card and flash that and you should have a fully working device.
Or you can do what Eddy posted above and get back to complete stock (like it was when you bought it)!

I will try that, currently if i choose "fastboot" when turn it on, it just blinks and get me to the same place I was a second before.
Stay tuned for more question in about 4,5h form now :]

Reset DINC without Screen?

Hi all- I just replaced my phone with Asurion because the screen is dead. I have it rooted s-off with Virtuous 3.2 ROM and stock kernel (my sig is not up to date). I want to reset it before I return it. My problem is I cannot do it because I have no screen. I think I pushed it to S-Off in recover when I still could see a little of it using my good phone as a good guide. Not sure it worked though and don't know how to verify.
Is there a way for me to do this with my PC using ADB? I will need detailed instructions because I am not familiar with ADB or the syntax.
Thanks..........mm
How about putting the stock 2.2 PB31IMG, on your sd card, booting into fastboot. All you should have to do is wait a minute out two to let it load the file then just press volume up to have it start updating. After it's done you will have a stock unrooted 2.2.

Wouldn't I need to navigate the screen to get into fastboot and load the update.zip?
I also thought that would not change the s-off. I am not too concerned about that though because this was not a warranty replacement. Mostly want to wipe the phone.

If you can, take the SD card out and use a micro SD adapter to put the image on the card, then boot into HBOOT. It will automatically find the image and ask you if you want to update. Select yes and you should be back to stock with S-ON.

Yup, no screen even in hboot. However if it loads the update.zip automatically (I don't recall this. As I recall you have to enter recovery from hboot, choose install update.zip, and then confirm.) Then all I would need is to know a couple key presses.
Best would be something in ADB on the PC so I see and confirm what happens.
Thanks

Connect the dead screen Inc to your computer and boot into recovery (hopefully you remember how to do it in the blind or you have another phone to look at what you have to press).
Google the adb commands, navigate to the phone memory and zero format the crap out of it
I went through the same thing, just an idea that could help you out.
Get yourself a giant magnet and rub it all over the phone. Stick it to the battery while it's in too, so everything gets a some magnetic wipe love.
I'm a romwhore, and I'm damn proud of it.
Lol magnets.
Just shake the phone vigorously to scramble your phone's data, render it useless.

Part 2: 2.2 stock using OTA RUU
1. Make sure you're rooted with clockworkmod recovery.
1A. If you're s-off, download http://www.fourty.net/~berzerker/sto...orever-son.zip
(NOTE: the unrevoked s-on tool does *not* support the 2.15.00.09.01 radio. If you're running that radio, download this, and flash that PB31IMG.zip in HBOOT before continuing.)
1B. Push that to your SDCard and flash it via clockworkmod recovery.
2. Download this zip file: http://www.fourty.net/~berzerker/sto....605.1_RUU.zip
3. Push PB31IMG-3.21.605.1_RUU.zip to your SDCard, renaming it to "PB31IMG.zip" (no quotes)(delete any other PB31IMG.zip you might have on there before pushing).
4. Boot into HBOOT, and it should recognize the PB31IMG.zip. Start the update and go get a drink (it might reboot once or twice, don't worry about it).
5. When that's done, reboot and you're at 2.2 stock!
That's it! These steps should bring you back to either 2.1 stock or 2.2 stock for a send-in!

sorry I don't have the exact key presses...
Here are the button presses you need for the PB31IMG flash way.
From phone being off
1. Hold vol - and power button
2. Wait about 2 minutes and let it load the PB31IMG file
3. Press vol + after 2 mintues
4. It should reboot kind of quickly
5. After about another 3-4 minutes (after it vibrates letting you know it rebooted) press vol + again.
6. Let it run through the rest and it should reboot again and that should bring it back to the regular stock setup screen that would come up if you just bought the phone.
These are as accurate as I can remember.

Push the update image to the sd card manually (take it out and use a micro sd adapter), boot up to hboot, wait about one minute, push the volume up key (that says yes you want it to find and update the inage) and it should start. Wait a good 15 minutes and press the volume up key to reboot.
I will get the link I got this from in a sec when I get on my laptop.

hey guys need a hand to work out if this device can be fixed at all.
the phone is a mates and it wont boot into android at all. can get into the boot loader and thats it. can someone help to give me a place to start?
If it boots to bootloader it is OK.
Can you get into FASTBOOT or Recovery?
yeah but does nothing
What does it mean nothing?
You can try flashing a RUU for your phone. Find them here.
By Fastboot I mean boot into the bootloader (pwr + vol down), navigate to fastboot (If you can't see it, once in boot loader, wait about 15secs then press the pwr button and you should be in fastboot), then you should be able to install the correct RUU.

Before you do anything, try to take off the SD card, and see if it boots. This happened to me just few days ago, and tbh my SD card got f***ed for some reason, so it didnt allow my phone to boot, I had access to Recovery, there I tried to clear dalvik cache, cache and restore factory settings, where it was freezing on formating EXT2 part... then I took the SD out and phone booted charmingly... so try this one out to see if its not the SD problem
how do i know which one to flash?
you need to supply details of the rom that was on the phone.
is it rooted?
what was the original rom?
is it branded etc?
theres not much help to be given unless you give us these details...
hboot 0.93
RADIO 5.11.05.27
dunno anything else :S
what country is it from?
any branding on it? eg, Orange apps / Tmobile apps..??
rooted? you should know this!!!
has the rom been changed since new?
EDIT - is it still under warranty?
its from Australia. i've got no info on it other then its not locked so yeah
plus that website i can't download the hole file gets part then falls through

[Q] Cannot unroot due to HTC Sync disconnection

Hey guys, pretty much what the title of the thread says. I try to unroot my phone via the HTC sync root, and when I click on the RUU to downgrade the phone, it instantly connects and I get an error message telling me to connect the phone.
Does anyone know how to cure this? It's been driving me crazy for ages now, wish I never rooted my phone in the first place!

Lol rooting is better than that stock crap from htc.
If it's disconnecting maybe reinstall the drivers. Pretty sure there is another thread around here somewhere.

Well, the first one wouldn't work at ALL as it's for American CDMA Desires so thank god that didn't work!!

Thanks for the link mate, will try now.
BTW, will I need to do a gold card or something?
Didn't work. Got the 131 error again. Arghhh, this is driving me crazy!
To get a froyo desire branded by t-mobile you have to run a special method:
Download these two files:
CustomRUU
2.12.110.2-1.21.110.4_release3uop1mw9unpc376h.zip
1.) Move the ota on your sd card and rename it into "update.zip"
2.) Run the installer. It extracts all needed files into a folder of your choice.
3.) Installer should start script automatically. If not, run "installer.bat" manually.
4.) Follow the instructions to the end.
5.) You are now in fastboot mode. Press power button to get into hboot.
6.) Choose recovery and enter with power button.
7.) If the red triangle shows up, hold volume up button and press power button. Now choose "Apply sdcard:update.zip"
When this operation is finished, you have a desire branded by t-mobile running froyo rom.
Sometimes the phone crashes when you install apps from the market. To fix this do the following:
1.) Turn off the phone
2.) Boot phone into hboot (start it with pressed volume down and power button)
3.) Navigate to "CLEAR STORAGE" and enter it.
This comment wipes the phone (so you loose all data) and resets all settings. After a reboot the market should work.

Ah man looks like I'm gonna need a micro SD card adapter...
Is there anyway possible that I don't have to do anything with my SD card & can just use a RUU just to fix it??

You have to use an sd card to get your working again, as far as i know.
Even if you want to run a stock froyo rom without any branding, you have to create a goldcard with linux and putting it in your phone, before you can run the ruu linked by eddyos.
And by the way, micro sd card readers aren't that expensive.
