Tmobile Broken Update to Froyo - Desire General

HI there - I have got myself in a pickle and would appreciate some help...
I have a TMobile branded Desire. I wanted to get Froyo so did the following:
1. Got a new mem card and created a Gold Card
2. Installed RUU_Bravo_HTC _WWE_1.21.405.2 _Radio_32.36.00.28U _4.06.00.02_2 _release_126984_signed
3. Replaced the Gold Card with my normal mem card (which has all my pics etc; on)
4. Ran OTA Froyo update.
I think the FROYO install didnt complete fully as it now randomly reboots by iteslf (every 2 or 3 mins) I have no signal, cant connect via USB to my pc (to downgrade) - all in all it's not exactly bricked but I cant really use it all.
Please help Anyone any ideas?

Will your phone boot up completely before rebooting? Can you get into recovery mode (vol down + power)?

Yes it will completely boot up. And yes I can get into recovery mode. Do you have a cunning plan?

The easiest thing to do would be to do a factory reset (somewhere in settings or from quickboot menu), although if indeed the flash didn't complete successfully this is unlikely to work, it would be the quickest if it did.
Failing that you will probably need to re-flash the device. You will need your goldcard and a rooted update file (zip format as I don't think you can install RUU from recovery).
It is likely that you will need to re-root your device first though..
What is your HBOOT version?

Thanks for the replies so far...
I've already tried a Factory Reset and that made no difference...
Yes I think a zip file is the way forward but I am struggling to work out which one and how I think install it.
My HBOOT is 0.80.0000
Also you mention I will need to re-root my device but I didnt root it in the first place.
Thanks again for help so far. Fingers crossed you can point me in the right direction...

I had this problem. Go download:
http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip
Then rename the file to update.zip and copy onto your goldcard - then insert into phone. Now go to recovery mode, select recovery, then when the red triangle thing comes up hold the volume down button when pressing the power button. You should be able to update now.

Oh and I didn't have my phone rooted.

Sorry, was assuming it was rooted and that the update un-rooted it. Since your un-rooted I think the link that er_yeah posted is the official zip update from HTC, that should do the trick.

Thanks er_yeah. Tried as you said. Went into recovery but cant get rid the red triangle thingy. Vol down and power doesnt do anything... Maybe I didn't put the update.zip file in the right place. I just copied it to the root of the sd card. There weren't any other files there - jsut folders (Rosie something was one of them).
Please stick with me

The problem is you tried to run an update without your goldcard.
You will be able to restore the phone by inserting your goldcard, booting into fastboot mode (back + power) and running this RUU:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...3.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed.exe
Do not try to run any OTA updates without your goldcard.

thanks mikey242. Hopefully er_yeah can help me out.

After a few confused minutes working out Fastboot things are looking promising. New ROM has now updated and will try in a sec with OTA Froyo (with goldcard). Thanks a lot so far all 3 of you...
Will update in a minute!

That RUU takes you directly to Froyo.

I used the original RUU as someone on Tmobile has updated to Froyo using it...
Anyway the phone is now debranded and on Froyo and working! So thank you everyone for helping out. I think my key mistake was trying to update OTA without the Goldcard. I have learned my lesson and wont repeat it.
OK I had a slight issue that I had lost all my text messages and Notes I had created in ColourNotes - but this seems like a small price to pay for what was at one point an unusable phone!
Thanks again guys!

Sorry for disappearing, glad that you got it sorted out!

Unable to debrand

Hi There,
I have a Desire on T-Mobile UK and tried to debrand last night without success. I created the gold card using the gold card tool and that looked fine. I then ran the stock firmware installation from within Windows however I am getting error 171 and something to do with the USB connection.
Am I being really silly and doing something wrong?
Thanks,
Ian
Ian
Can I propose an alternative to what you are doing? I am assuming that you have a valid goldcard that you are using. I updated my stock t-mobile branded phone to debranded 'HTC froyo with sense' yesterday evening. I found this amazingly simple and I hope you do the same as well. Here's what I did.
1. Download file PB99IMG_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28 U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=684259 and rename it to PB99IMG.zip and store it onto your goldcard. This way you do not need any computer at all to push the update. You can do everything on the phone.
2. Insert the goldcard into your phone.
3. Get the phone into recovery mode by restarting by pressing the volume down key on phone startup (power the phone from being switched off). There is an option for recovery where the phone will automatically read the flash rom file and present you with options. It will then ask you if you want to apply the update or not. Press volume up button to accept.
4. Let the rom upgrade do its job. It will reboot a few times.
5. Once its applied all updates, it will restart, i.e. you will see the HTC boot animation and subsequently the phone will be ready.
6. Ensure that you set up your wifi connectivity or that you are on HSDPA now.
7. Go to settings > about phone > updates and click the check updates button.
8. The system will automatically download and install froyo now....
9. All smiles..... I would suggest that you reboot the phone once the froyo update is over.
did you set usb debugging in phone settings and set it to charge only? Do you have device drivers for desire (htc sync installs them).
I debranded mine yesterday. Created a goldcard (klutsch method, tool) pluged in usb with mentioned settings, ran WWE 1.21.405 RUU (exe) had to reboot my comp in order to finish the booloader driver install. Then I ran the .exe again and it went smoothly. With the stock rom and goldcard inserted I updated to froyo.
AH!!!!!!!!!! I didn't have it on charge only doh! I will try it again tonight thanks JayKaySLO.
If however this doesn't work I will try your version s1977.
I thought I was being stupid ;o)
Thanks for your help.
Ian
If I were you, I'd try to root using UnrEVOked3 first, and then just flash a pre-rooted Froyo ROM, rather than debranding to get the update OTA.
Two reasons for this:
1. If UnrEVOked3 works for you, it is very simple
2. You won't be updating your HBoot to the latest, currently unrootable, version, which will allow you more flexibility in future with custom ROMs.
Regard,
Dave
Flashing a pre rooted rom seems like a better option. Just waiting for the dust to settle around any small bugs. Debranding is surely just as much of a warranty void so what's the benefit, you just end up with a security locked phone.

Hi, can you tell me if you were on HBOOT 0.80 or 7.5 when you did this please.
I guess I will need to get the phone unlocked for the root?
Dilemma??
Thanks again.
I did mine last night and was also getting the USB error. This is what I did and it worked perfectly:
(With Goldcard inserted)
-Boot up phone
-Connect to PC > Set to HTC Sync
-Run the RUU WWE 1.21.405.2 ROM
If/when you get the USB error message onscreen, your phone should be on a black background with the HTC logo. At this point I did the following:
-Leave the phone on the HTC logo (as it was when you got the error).
-Unplug the phone (you will not be on a white screen with coloured text)
-Plug the phone back in (you will now be back to the HTC logo)
-Re run the RUU
It worked for me, just wish I could remember where I read it before!
Nice one Airwalker82 )
Thanks
claudefrog, I was on HBOOT v0.8 and i still am after the upgrade. TBH, i was confused with all the information with updating the phone and eventually went down with the system option rather than the computer bit as I use a mac anyways.....
No worries, let us know if it worked for you.
I'll try to find the original source for where I found that little workaround, it might be useful for others.
**Almost forgot, you need to enable USB debugging on your phone before you connect it to your PC else it wont work.
I will give it another go tonight and let you know how I get on.
Thanks for all the advice!
Ian
I just tried the SD card way, putting in my gold card and it worked fine.
Only issues, still cannot see for an update. I think maybe because of vodafone network.
I may try the same method to install 2.2 since it worked so nice.
Is there a chance HTC have pulled the update?
Glad to hear the SD card way worked )
Ok, Reflashed with SD card way and no sim card...now it sees the update.
Thats the trick I guess. No vodafone SIM
Result with the debrand and update to 2.2. I did what you said Airwalker82 and it was a walk in the park!
Thanks again for all the advice.
Ian
Glad to hear it worked for you....
Excellent! Glad that worked! =)
It certainly does feel quicker - no little laggy moments when doing things a little too quickly, and no more juddering when in a game or something and a message comes through =D
Enjoy your new FroYo =)
I think Froyo is an improvment however I do find surfing the net isn't quite as smooth as before, but still happy.
Cheers!

[Q] Bricked my DHD, please help :(

Let me just start off by saying poop.
I've been reading up on these forums quite a lot, equipping myself with enough knowledge to get going on using this phone to its potential.
After the anticipation of getting my DHD, I went about rooting it. I used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076.
Everything went fine without much trouble. I completed all the steps in rooting it and gaing SU access. Also installed the Clockwork Recovery mod without a hiccup. I went on to install the Android Revolution ROM and going through the guide I used a tool called: 'Easy Wipe Upgrade.'
After installing this zip, the phone reboot and it just refuses to budge. Stuck on the HTC splash screen.
I've held down the bottom volume button with power and it gets me into HBOOT. I've tried a variety of option such as factory resets and nothing seems to be working.
My luck and phones. Just have a very expensive brick now sitting on my desk. Ah
I'd appreciate any help I can get please. Thanks.
I managed to resolve it!
Just FYI. Mounted the USB (Which was hidden fairly deeply) I guess you don't look when you panic? I then dropped on the ROM and installed it and boot up took a while but voila, it worked!
Well done, I would go mental if I bricked my phone. That's why I am still just reading up rather than trying things.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
in the exact same situation as you where Could you go into abit more detail how you resolved this? currently have no phone cheers
whats wrong with your phone mate
Just so you know, as long as you have access to the bootloader (can be stock bootloader with S-ON, doesn't matter), 99% of the time you can 'unbrick' your phone by installing a stock RUU (PD98IMG.zip method) which returns your phone to complete stock.
If you install the wrong RUU while ENG HBOOT S-OFF then you can potentially fudge up your phone for good (unless you have Radio S-OFF, then you are fine - just install the correct RUU).
So don't worry, because there is nearly always a way to go back to how your phone was before you started hacking it.

You are not supposed to rename the RUU file, rather you run the RUU file and then afterwards locate the ROM.zip file located in your temp folder. This ROM.zip file is meant to be renamed PD98IMG.zip, NOT the RUU file.
ok that was stupid of me.. ok will try to give it a go..
sorry if this sounds stupid to you again.. but, i just wana be sure.. its my first smartphone..
anyway, i run the ruu file on my pc, yeah? so then when i run it, it asks me to connect my dhd using the usb cable.. so i did... but it couldnt detect my phone.. thus, it couldnt continue it's setup.. ;-( thank you for helping out..
Make sure you install HTC Sync, it should also install all the DHD USB drivers needed.
hey, do you have any step by step guide on doing this? im afraid il do something wrong again and just risk messing up the phone even more..
i have htc sync and the htc drivers on my laptop but when i connect the usb plug to my phone and try to run the ruu.. it still gives me the prompt of no connection from the pc and android phone.. :-| what am i doing wrong? sorry...
thanks in advance for the any help!
i managed to get to the update part.. but now it prompts a 131 error message.. :-( help?

The PC36IMG is the system file the bootloader recognizes as like a system updater. And did you select update and then to reboot, once prompted?

sorry but I don't see the "update" to choose.
I press power + volume down button => it take me to the hboot interface.
The menu there are : fastboot - recovery - clear storage - simlock - hboot usb.
5s later it start to run the PC36IMG file with no notification and log, very fast and disappear.
So, what would I do now?

Two things to double check, to be sure that that the bootloader will recognize PC36IMG. 1) the PC36IMG must be named exactly that. It has to be capital letters, and you do not want it to say PC36IMG.zip, just PC36IMG. The phone automatically recognizes and labels it as a zip file. So if you named it PC36IMG.zip, it will ultimately be named PC36IMG.zip.zip, and will not be recognized.
2) Be sure that the PC36IMG is on the root (main directory) of your SD card, and not within any folders. It won't be recognized if it is in a folder.
If you make sure of those two things, then the bootloader should scan and find the PC36IMG, and instead of seeing it searching and the green lettering pop up, then disappear, you will see it ask you if you want to update, use volume up to select yes. Hope that helps you out.
Edit: And yes, I went to download the PC36IMG attatched above in this thread, and it is indeed labeled PC36IMG.zip. Rename it to PC36IMG (just remove the .zip) That should take care of it.
Also, I never saw this confirmed in the thread, but you were previously rooted and had a custom recovery prior to this problem, correct? And you are indeed s off at the bootloader?

If you're s on and not rooted yet, I dont think you'll just be able to flash recovery. You need to root it first, then flash recovery. You should download an RUU or a PC36IMG of a factory rom. That will get you back to stock. From there, you can run Unrevoked to root it first though (you need to be rooted to flash roms). I will attatch a link with all of the PC36IMG's (you run from bootloader) and RUU's (you run from computer). You can use either method to get the phone back to stock condition (what I recommend). You will at least be able to boot then. From there you can decide if you want to root it and flash a ROM. Read up a bit more also, it will benefit you.

It's not a hardware problem, well, most likely not. Download a PC36IMG from the link I provided for you. It's hard to say which one you need, but try this one first. http://db.tt/gqTAPS1. That is a factory, unrooted ROM for the Evo. It is the latest software, 3.70. It may or may not work for you (you may need an older one, but not sure) What you need to do is download that file, rename it exactly PC36IMG. Put it on the main directory of your SD card. Shut the phone off completely. Hold Volume down and Power simultaneously until you reach the bootloader. At this point, the bootloader should scan the sd card, find the pc36img and ask you to update. You would then press volume up to select yes. Once it starts, let it run through its course. It should take a few minutes to complete, and you will see a couple different screens. whateveer you do, dont pull the battery while it's updating, and be sure you're battery has some charge on it, so it doesnt die in the process. I hope that helps. If that update successfully completes, the phone should be exactly how it came out of the box. Factory Rom. Good luck.

Good luck.

thank you k2, I'm downloading and will flash it A.S.A.P, I'll tell you the result.
Bit off topic but not really...
My EVO was rooted running cm7 with the latest clockwork gotten from and installed from rom manager.
Ran fine for about a week. Then right after pressing send on a replied email, reboot!
Crap I thought I was gonna have to retype the whole thing again...
Nope, it turns out the email had enough time to send but the phone never did reboot.
Just got itself in a loop. White HTC logo, vibrate, white htc logo,vibrate...
Could get to boot loader but when trying to access recovery I would go back into the same loop.
Kinda gave me the impression that the recovery partition was corrupted.
I was already out so I thought "what the hell" and took it to the sprint store. The tech was looking and working on the thing for literally over an hour on my phone (took about 3 hours from when I brought it in). Then finally the tech came out and asked for me. I was positive he had finally figured out it was rooted and was gonna tell me to screw off. Well, instead he said "honestly, I can't figure out what the heck is wrong with this thing, I'm just going to replace it for you,I'll be right back".
OK so now I'm expecting a refurbed phone with my battery and ad card shoved in it. He came back with a new EVO box...
Then he handed me the new one with the 8gb (I only had a 2 in mine) card and the original battery (I have the extended one). Then he said "your card battery charger and everything else is in the box".
SCORE! Haha sometime I actually like sprint...
Moral of the story: if all else fails take it to the store.s
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Dang that's awesome! yeah every store I've been to has been more than happy to just throw a new phone at me haha

Desire HD stuck on welcome screen after 2.3 update

Hello everyone,
im in urge need of help. I somehow failed while updating to 2.3 :/
I thought that the update was done since the loading bar went to the right and stood there for a good couple of minutes. So i took the battery out. Now as i turn the phone on i only get to see the htc sign on a white background.
I tried holding the volume down key and the power button at once. I get into the recovery menu or whatever it is called. There i've chosen factory reset: i can see a update screen again. The bar doesnt move from left to right though. After 15 sec the phone resets itself and i can see the htc logo again
Recovery only shows me a phone image with a exclamation mark
I never installed anything custom on the phone. It is as i bought it from the shop. I initially had 2.2 on it.
Anyone help please
I will guess you need to put a ROM file on your SD card and select install file from sd card in recovery. If something went wrong during update you proberly dont have a Android system installed right now.
But if your on stock rom I'm not sure if that will be possibl, but hopefully somebody with more knowledge could answear that...
Good luck
If you pulled the battery while it was updating something like the radio, then you have messed it up.
I'd suggest downloading the Gingerbread RUU and trying it again. Sadly you may now lose all the data on you phone.

screw the data !
I just want my phone back
If anyone could hit me up with the details how Im supposed to bring back my desire hd to live id be forever grateful!!!
Click the link in my sig, head to RUUs and download the Gingerbread RUU. Once downloaded, plug you handset into your computer, run the RUU~.exe .
If that fails to work, with the RUU~.exe still running open a search window on your computer and search for "rom.zip", I will be in a hidden temp folder somewhere in your userdata.
Rename this rom.zip to "PD98IMG.zip" and copy to your SDcard. Now turn off your phone, and power on while holding volume down. The bootloader should see the PD98IMG.zip and flash it for you.

dont think that this is possible, as he never had a custom revovery à la ClockworkMod installed. So he cant choose which zip to flash.
but i think that andyharney got the solution for this

Damn! I can't find the option to make a e-blowjob but rest assured that if such an option would be there, you'd be the first one to receive it
Thanks a lot! It works. I had my doubts as during the whole instalation my phone showed the htc logo on the white background several times(i thought that it got worse), but in the end i got it back runing!
So happy! Thanks 1.000.000 times and once again: THANKS!
Which method worked the RUU~.exe or the PD98IMG.zip?

[Q] Cannot unroot due to HTC Sync disconnection

Hey guys, pretty much what the title of the thread says. I try to unroot my phone via the HTC sync root, and when I click on the RUU to downgrade the phone, it instantly connects and I get an error message telling me to connect the phone.
Does anyone know how to cure this? It's been driving me crazy for ages now, wish I never rooted my phone in the first place!
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks...
Lol rooting is better than that stock crap from htc.
If it's disconnecting maybe reinstall the drivers. Pretty sure there is another thread around here somewhere.

You can also run the RUU when the phone is in fastboot. Turn the phone off, turn it on again holding the back button and when on the white fastboot screen connect to the PC and run the RUU again

Tried that mate, and now I have a black screen, I think it's bricked it.
I know its turned on though because it vibrates & my pc still recognises it.
Any idea what I do now?
My ROM or RUU whatever its called is... 2.12.110.4 & I'm on T-Mobile.

I want to unroot because me Desire started acting weird since I rooted. Started rebooting all the time & not full booting up. Had enough of it.
Which RUU did you use? As there isn't a FroYo T-Mobile one chances are you've flashed one for an AMOLED screen and you have SLCD

I think this one is the one I tried first...
RUU_Desire_C_Verizon_WWE_2.36.605.1_release_signed_with_driver
Then I tried...
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8_Radio_32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed
Been getting the 131 error & 140 error. I don't have a clue on what to do to fix this... As you can tell, I'm totally new to this lol.
Well, the first one wouldn't work at ALL as it's for American CDMA Desires so thank god that didn't work!!
Use this one:

Thanks for the link mate, will try now.
BTW, will I need to do a gold card or something?
Didn't work. Got the 131 error again. Arghhh, this is driving me crazy!
To get a froyo desire branded by t-mobile you have to run a special method:
Download these two files:
CustomRUU
2.12.110.2-1.21.110.4_release3uop1mw9unpc376h.zip
1.) Move the ota on your sd card and rename it into "update.zip"
2.) Run the installer. It extracts all needed files into a folder of your choice.
3.) Installer should start script automatically. If not, run "installer.bat" manually.
4.) Follow the instructions to the end.
5.) You are now in fastboot mode. Press power button to get into hboot.
6.) Choose recovery and enter with power button.
7.) If the red triangle shows up, hold volume up button and press power button. Now choose "Apply sdcard:update.zip"
When this operation is finished, you have a desire branded by t-mobile running froyo rom.
Sometimes the phone crashes when you install apps from the market. To fix this do the following:
1.) Turn off the phone
2.) Boot phone into hboot (start it with pressed volume down and power button)
3.) Navigate to "CLEAR STORAGE" and enter it.
This comment wipes the phone (so you loose all data) and resets all settings. After a reboot the market should work.

Ah man looks like I'm gonna need a micro SD card adapter...
Is there anyway possible that I don't have to do anything with my SD card & can just use a RUU just to fix it??

You have to use an sd card to get your working again, as far as i know.
Even if you want to run a stock froyo rom without any branding, you have to create a goldcard with linux and putting it in your phone, before you can run the ruu linked by eddyos.
And by the way, micro sd card readers aren't that expensive.
