[Q] Have i killed my desire? - Desire General

Hi All,
Apologies for my first post being a cry for help but im seriously screwed at the moment.
I have a UK t-Mobile Desire that came preinstalled with 2.1, and so the story of my rooting failure begins.
First of all i tried using Unrevoked 3.1 and apparently this worked, but i was no longer able to enter recovery mode at all.
Following this i tried applying the Amon Ra loader to my device. Once this was completed the phone was seemlingly working fine but i still could not get into recovery mode, it would jsut hang on the circular logo.
By now im pretty fedup with the whole thing and i decided to unroot my device using the unlocker video guide and the unmodified RUU from this site.
Now my device boots (i guess) but the screen no longer works, at all. All i want to do is restore my phone to its factory state so i can use it.
Can please anyone help a poor newbie out.

You haven't killed it, but you should have read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=749551
That includes a link to fix it, though it's not easy.

thanks for the response but according to the boot screen i had hboot 0.75

Your problem is SLCD. The bootloader is not relevant.

Sorry to be a complete numpty, but what process do i need to complete, there seem to be several options on that link.
thanks, i really appreciate any help

If you want to upgrade directly to Froyo just install this RUU (easy):
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...3.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed.exe
If you want to try to get Android 2.1 back then this thread (difficult):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=750852

I just tried the "easy" option and got the following error message from the Rom update utility.
ERROR[131]: CUSTOMER ID ERROR
The ROM Update Utility cannot update your android phone
Please get the correct ROM Update Utilility and try again.

You need a goldcard in the phone.

Ok, thanks for your help.
I will dissapear for an hour or two and see if i can get this fixed.
Eitherway many thanks for your help

Insert the goldcard, run the RUU, and it will be fixed.

when i try to create the goldcard i get an "error: device not found" message when running the adb ****** command

you create the gold card in your pc not the phone. i think

I am doing it on my pc, but it would seem that my pc cant "see" the desire. Im guessing that either USB debugging is off, or the phone is connected to the pc in anotehr "mode"
sigh

you make the goldcard on pc. then insert it into the phone

It must be that USB debugging is off. Does anyone know how to turn this on remotely or without seeing the screen?

Just use the goldcard you originally used with the RUU that broke your screen.

Or did you use a t-mobile branded RUU?

I dont have it

I used the tmobile branded one

When you flash an RUU you are restored to factory defaults, so usb debugging is off.
It is possible to enable usb debugging blindly if you read the other link I posted. It's difficult. Without a goldcard you cannot flash an SLCD-compatible RUU, which is the only way you can recover the phone. There aren't any branded RUUs available that support SLCD.

Flashing and booting into recovery via Fastboot

A little background, my phone is in a brand new shape with SLCD Brick.
I am thinking of flashing clockwork recovery via fastboot and then booting into it so that I can access ADB to make a goldcard, the question is can I do that? I can't see anything on the phone so I cannot enable the USB debugging mode.
You can't flash that via fastboot. You will need to flash an RUU, so you'll have to make a goldcard on another phone or enable USB debugging without the screen working.
I can't flash a proper RUU that won't require a goldcard, so I can't flash any recovery via fastboot? I just need a way to get ADB working.
What brand is your phone?
Well only Asia_India RUU was able to flash which got my phone into a SLCD, so I'm assuming it is Asia_India, I do live in India and bought it from here.
You'll need to enable USB debugging without the screen working in that case. There are some instructions in other threads (search for SLCD brick).
The only way to restore your phone is to flash a froyo RUU.
I got a absolutely stock Desire with a brand new flash running 2.1, the only tutorial I found was for 2.2 and I can't confirm if it applies to me. Can anyone guide me?
The tutorials for 2.2 involve downgrading to 2.1 using a method that breaks the screen and then enabling USB debugging. You just need to follow those second steps.
What tutorial are you talking about? Link?
Use search.
I did, the only "downgrading" guide I found was the one which didn't brick SLCD, the only enable debugging method I found was for 2.2.
It seems I'm stuck at the setup wizard, can anyone give me pointers on how to get past it?
Same problem for me. Searching for the thread you mentioned.
Edit: Found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7742786
That doesnt help. I dont think mine is booting to Android. It seems to be stuck at Boot without a screen. The hardware keys arent lighted up

Can't boot into ROM or recovery

I have a rooted Desire on Orange UK and running LeeDroid. I have my main SD card and a spare (the spare is used for flashing any roms etc.). I've made both goldcards.
Recently I've had problems with my phone rebooting randomly and today it did the same (been meaning to get in touch with HTC for a motherboard replacement which I've read fixes it). Sometimes when this happens it gets stuck on the white HTC logo and the solution is to pull the battery and then wait a bit and turn on and then it's fine. However today I did just that and now I can't boot into the OS or recovery modes.
I had a generic RUU that I used to downgrade my bootloader previously so I thought running that to flash back to a generic rom would at least get me back to a starting position. However I'm getting the CID error running that, using both goldcards. This would suggest to me the goldcards aren't properly working now!
Obviously not being able to get into anything other than bootloader/fastboot I cannot connect via adb and I also can't attempt to remake a goldcard. The ideal solution would be to get it into recovery somehow just so I can re-flash a rom.
If my phone is buggered then will Orange/HTC be able to tell if it's rooted (I'm guessing they will have a way), or will they need to flash an Orange rom and thus remove the root when that happens? If I have no choice, who shall I contact Orange or HTC? If repair under warranty is unlikely I have insurance so luckily I am covered.
Any advice is welcome. Going to pop out for a bit to calm down my annoyance but will be online again later.
Simon.
Bump.
Will be returning via Phones4U today, unless anyone can come up with a last minute suggestion.
What errors do you get if you connect via USB and:
adb reboot recovery
...?
Did you run an undervolted/overvolted/overclocked ROM? If it wasn't stable, that will mess your phone up. Qualcomm can easily trace that, Orange can't, unless they refer back to them.
And yes, they will be able to tell if a device is still rooted. Not if you undo it with your stock RUU flash though.
------------------------------
- Sent via HTC Desire -
I get the CID error if I try to run an RUU.
I can't get into recovery and if I try to connect the phone using unrevoked/desire downgrade/adb through the command line it either says device not connected or please connect the device.
It wasn't under or over-volted.

the creating golden card is now obsoleted method. It better, that you use unrevoked method to make new HDBOOT from www.unrevoked.com with following instructions. You can root easy and do everything you need only on rooted phone. I will reccomend also and make S-Off for full access in your phone. Everything in one place - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
Enjoy!
Thanks both.
I can't use unrevoked it says please connect the device.

it means, the drivers are not installed. you can take it from
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
and you must read faq http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked3
I've used unrevoked before without issue. Tried re-installing the drivers and it didn't work.
Is it because I can only get into fastboot/bootloader?

Nope. Unrevoked will work if your PC can see the phone. So you have a connection error caused either by a incomplete/faulty setup on the PC, or with your USB attachment (cable/connectors/ports).

Thanks for everyone's help. I don't know why Unrevoked could not see the phone then. Had ensured the drivers were installed correctly in device manager etc.
I also have no idea why I would be getting CID failure when this has never caused me a problem previously. My suspicion is a hardware fault so I've sent to HTC for repair.
Got my phone back from HTC today, motherboard replaced

someone realls should update the tutorial. There is no need to downgrad to older hboot with the newest unrevoked.
EDIT: Is your phone branded? Did you write down you exact version number before you flashed anything?
Have you tried to run the new unrevoked in the state its in now?
Branded?version number?
What you mean....
I try to run the new unrevoked3 but program just say "waiting for device"
I check in device manager and can see that Android bootloader iinterface appear.
But nothing happend....
What to to??HELP ME
I need to get my phone back to life...
There must be away to fixx it??
was you phone network branded? as in did a network logo appear when you turned your phone on

Did you enable USB Debugging? Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging.
There probably is a way to recover your phone, but it isn't helping that you didnt write down you version numbers and/or read in the forum before you started the root process.
Is your phone branded?: Is it a provider-phone i.e. t-mobile, vodafone etc? To give a definite answer on that you need to know the exact version number (like 2.29.405.5). Without this number you can afaik just guess - did you see a logo other than htc's on bootup? Where there any provider-specific apps preinstalled on your phone? Where did you buy it?
My first guess is to boot into fastboot (power on while holding "back"-key) and flash the correct ruu ( Download here)
If its unbranded, the correct RUU is RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe.
After that your phone is completely back to stock and you can retry the rooting-prodedure but with the newest unrevoked and without downgrading hboot
EDIT: Am I correct in thinking that you can't boot up your phone and a stuck on the first htc-logo (before the annoying sound)? If no, forget all the above.
Can you boot into recovery? (power on while hitting vol-, then wait 10 seconds, then highlight "recovery" with vol-/vol+, select with power, wait another 5 seconds, hit vol+ + power (I think ^^)
Hi
I check before I do the downgrade procedure that its hads this number:2.29.405.5
And I try to get unrevoked now and no communication.
I also had USB debugging on before it crash.
Now its just freeze on HTC logo and after that a red triangle with a phone symbol.

That means your phone is not branded ('405' is the important part).
The get unrevoked working you need your phone to be booted up. So you probably need to run the ruu first.
How can I start ruu?
What is the step to install that RUU?
Do I need to install something on the SDcard?
Do I need a PC to do this?

As I said, you download the RUU[...].exe I posted earlier. Then you boot your phone into fastboot (power+back-Key ) and run the downloaded ruu.exe on your PC. Piece of cake.
But wait for someone else to confirm.
I try to start the RUU but got an Error....on the PC
What to do?
I run Windows7 on PC.
Why can`t I run the RUU file??any clue....
Are you using 32 or 64 Bit? Sometimes 64 bit cause problems. What did the error say?
Just right click and and run as administrator.. run your RUU that way
Well, I use 32bit Enterprise version and right click as administrator, still fail to open....
Help......
This is the error message below:

I run this
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00. 32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe.

[Q] messed up htc desire - tried to unroot phone now phones stopped working

Hi. i tried to unroot my phone and install orange stuff back on by following a guide on this forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=796975
When i followed the guide i kept on getting md5 error, so then i dont know what i did, i somehow installed something and now the phones stuck on htc screen, phone wont load. However i still can enter hboot menu. i have taken some pics so you can see. i will add them to Flickr.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kaisar89/sets
the phones orange uk branded which i purchased from phones4u. Details on the box are as follows:
HTC Desire PM Handset
OHTN1132
IMEI:
S/N:
P/N
EAN
Barcode: 5 027141 592329
That is the all the information on the box.
can someone please give me a solution on how to fix this problem. Much appreciated. TY
Of I've followed that guide. That nandroid backup is the Orange version but it's still rooted. And in the guide it says to open up a file and remove one of the lines. That will fix the md5 error. Anyway to unroot properly just use an ruu.

hi, is there a stock orange ruu? if not the very least a stock htc ruu?
if possbile could you post link
in fastboot mode theres 4 options.
BOOTLOADER
REBOOT
REBOOT BOOTLOADER
POWER DOWN
Which one do i need to select?
You just leave it in fast boot then plug it in to the computer you should see the red fastboot writing turn to fastboot USB plug then just run the ruu and that's it
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
No there isn't a stock Orange RUU - it's the one drawback of rooting an Orange-branded phone as there's no way of getting back to stock. You'll have to flash a stock unbranded RUU using a gold card

Bricked Desire?! :(

Hey guys I'm really desperate right now...
I don't know what to to, I can't boot my Desire, I can't get into recovery, just fastboot is working. I'm always stuck on the splashscreen.
To begin with the story, I rooted my Desire months ago, flashed a new rom from time to time and everything worked fine. So yesterday I wanted to try out RCMix S CM7 where the FAQ said i need S-OFF.
So this also worked quite fine. But then I got problems partitioning my SDCard (dont know what why or so, my Desire didnt recognize it anymore)
Today I tried again but I made it even worse, now I can't boot my Rom anymore and I can't get into Recovery. So what should I do? I searched the internet for hours now and tried nearly everything.
I tried to flash an official RUU, in fact this one: RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe
Becaus the others were too "old". But when I tried starting this one it couldnt detect my desire. USB connecion error.
But still it seems it flashed a new hboot because now I am S-ON again.
Then I tried to flash a Stock ROM via fastboot, which first failed because it wasn't signed and the second one failed because android-info.txt and android-product.txt were missing.
I tried to flash the recovery again but it's still stuck on the splashcreen.
I don't know what to do anymore... could you PLS help me? Or is my Desire now bricked??
What can I do, or try...?
greets patrick

If fastboot is working you should be pretty much safe. It seems like you got an usb brick. Try this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691187
My Suggestion ... Create a Goldcard beofre doing anything.. once done you can put PB99IMG.zip into ur SD card and it will flash automatic once you goto fastboot... but Goldcard is a must for this.. if you dont knw search how to create goldcard.
For Goldcard
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...gold-card-for-htc-desire-without-hex-editing/
or
http://theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/
Pat, is your phone branded ?
Flash the correct RUU for your phone (one that came with your phone originally), it does not really matter how old it is. after you done that your should get back to stock you can re-root it and then load the firmware you want.
if you don't know what your phone came with originally. then you will need a goldcard to get back to stock
@paul.c: nope it isn't branded
@dennis.l: I can't! I tried some of this list: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
The old ones with 1.15 and 1.21 started, but didn't work because it said they are too old or something like that.
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.15.405.4_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4. 05.00.11_release_122704.exe
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
Then I tried the newer one with FroYo, but this one throw and error saying it can't even find or connect to my phone.
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00. 32U_5.11.05.27_release
So what I've read so far I definitely need a goldcard right?
But all those manuals say I have to boot up and activate USB Debugging Mode... but I cant boot up a rom. The only thing that is working right now is fastboot.
Is it possible to make a goldcard without booting up? Or do I have to get a working Desire to make the goldcard?
I haven't got a cardreader either but seems I've got to get one.
Right now I'm not at home so can just try it in the evening.

You don't need goldcard for unbranded phones.
Even Unbranded phone requires goldcard to be able to flash any RUU...
So I prefer you create goldcard.. and yehs you can create goldcard without booting..
If you have anyone with android mobile.. goto market and search for goldcard helper.. and insert you memory card in that phone.. and run the goldcard helper.. it will give you the reverse CID .. whcih you can use to create goldcard... but you will require a card reader for sure..... just try your luck with your current phone.. just plug in the phone and run the Goldcard tool.. and check if your phone is detecting
THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!

Anytime Bro
I recently experienced a similar problem. And all the stuff you described wrong with your phone is the same on mine.
What I want to know is how to get back to stock and all that? A step by step guide would be very much apreciated..
I tried following this guide:http: //forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691639
but as I try to enable my sdcard it get an error:
"The program can't start because AdbWinApi.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem".
I recently installed the JDK and just downloaded the newest android SDK to work with.
Besides I'm considering whether I'm doing this right. I do have to use the CMDprompt right? and direct it to my androidsdk/tools directory?
I'm pretty much new to messing around with my phone through the CMD though. Please be gentle when you describe any methods that might work..?

Adbwinapi.dll was moved to the platform-tools dir in the android sdk and the sdk path in Windows hasn't be updated. In win xp right click my computer, go to system then click the system variables button. Find "path" and change it to point in to the "platform-tools" folder... Note I'm not at my pc so I can't remember 100% what tab the system variables button is on

Regards,
Me

Stumbled into the same problem. Just download it from the internet.
hi,
rage is right, better declare environnement variable, right click comupter - select properties - windows select advanced and you should see variable environnement. just add the path where adb is installed... mine is the following defaut path(C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk-windows\tools) + (C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools) should add the in the user environ... name = path variable= the 2 path separated by a ;
Well I got desperate and I think that I've totally bricked my phone. I was going to a family arrangement and I didn't know the way so I was hoping that flashing the original RUU, would make me able to use the phone and the navigation in it, while starting the phone in fastboot would help. Seems it didn't. The RUU I tried to install seems it was a wrong one (here to say that I tried flashing it through the installer on my pc), but this was stated pretty late in the installation process.. where the guide told me to install a proper one.
My phone is now totally unresponsive. It won't even charge. When I hold the power button it just vibrates once and then nothing else happens.
Is it bricked? If so, does anyone know what my chances are with my warranty? Now that I've had it rooted and stuff, does my warrenty then expire and can they "track" the rooting part if I hand in it to their support?
Best of regards,
Me.

only guessing but if NOTHING turns on or boots, as in you just see a black screen then there is not going to be a way for any one to know the phone was rooted
try taking it back on warranty
I thought the same thing myself. Since it's unable to boot into the "recovery" menu by holding down "power + volume down" I guess it's not rooted anymore anyhow. During the RUU installation I noticed that it was installing a new "image-something" which I'm guessing means that it was writing over the root and recovery after which the installation failed.
Anyhow I'll try that and hope for the best. Thanks

Are you able to recognise the phone in adb at all?
From what I know it's very rare to completely brick unless you are flashing hboots or radios.
