[Q] Voicemail: An optional upgrade is now available. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've got this notification that will not go away. (clearing does nothing).
When I tap on it, it says it's downloading an upgrade to what appears to be stock voicemail mail. When done, it asks
Code:
This is a system application. Do you still want to replace it?
All previous user data will be saved.
When I hit "OK", I get the standard install approval screen, hit "install", then get bounced to a screen that just says "Application not installed" with just a "done" on the bottom.
Seeing as how I use Google Voice for my voicemail and not sprint, I could care less about the regular voicemail app, but being able to get rid of the notification would be great.
Any help in trying to remove this annoying notification would be awesome.
Thanks!

Just delete the sprint vvm.apk from /system/ and that should do it.

I'm having the exact same problem. I've tried moving the vvm apk out from underneath after the download finishes and the install is about to start, and no joy. I still get "not installed."
Thoughts?

I'm guessing that I have to remove this file using something other than Astro? Keeps telling me that it can't delete files, looks like the permissiosn are read only, and I can't find a way to change the permissions.

You need to be rooted to write to system. Then you can use adb or root explorer.
Sent from my FROYO'D EVO using xda app

If you're using a custom ROM Sprint stuff may not update because the developer of your ROM signed it. Check for updates with your ROM developer (website or an update tool), most of the developers have already made their own VVM update from Sprint's release.

Just another hole to cover so we can't root, just a thought.

Same problem here. Renaming the .apk via adb then rebooting did the trick.

Guys, I figured this one out today.
I got the same "unable to install" message when I tried to install the new one. First thing I did, was uninstall the stock one using Titanium backup, but any method should work the same. Then rebooted the phone and tried the install again.
It went through with no problems. Check my sig for info, but I think this should work with any custom ROM.
Also, please note that I had a copy of the install file on my SD card and I accessed it via EStrongs file explorer. Again, I don't think it matters which file explorer you use, but having it on your SD card may be the key.
Edit: I used this link to get the file on my SD card:

Did you follow my previous post?
1) DL the file on the link I provided from another thread on here.
2) Mount your SD as disk drive and click and drag it onto your SD card.
3) Uninstall the current voicemail app on your phone (if you don't have Titanium backup paid version, you will need to use Astro or another app that can uninstall apps from the phone)
4) Reboot your phone.
5) Use a file explorer to find the zip file you put on your phone, and install it.
You should be good to go.

I followed these instructions step by step and I can get the voicemail app to load but it doesn't work. I don't get my messages, I hit the "check for updates" button and get a box that comes up and tells me there was a general error. I've updated my profile and my prl. Please let me know what I need to do to get this fixed. I'm on BS 1.5.
Thanks in Advance

Well, I am not an expert by any means. I can tell you that this worked for me the first time I tried it. By any chance, can you install the old version back on? Or, did you back-up your ROM in any way where you can go back to the way your phone was before you started so at least the old app is on there and working?
If not, hopefully someone can chime in who knows more on the subject.

easiest way of fixing this should be to use SteelH's flashable vvm update zip found on his rom thread here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743781
I think it works on any rom.

I did the following steps and still no go.
1. Flashed SteelH's zip.
2. Updated my profile.
3. Updated my prl.
4. Rebooted.
5. Called my cell and left two voicemails.
I never got a notitication and when I try to check for updates I get a general error. And when I hit the button to change my greeting, a box comes up saying it will connect me with my voicemail, but nothing ever happens.
I found an old version of the voicemail app and tried that and I get the same results. I must be doing something wrong or there is something wrong with my phone.
Any ideas for me to try, would be greatly apperciated.

Sorry - that link will only solve the issue in the OP - how to update to the latest version of vvm (v5.1.0.34), and get rid of notifications that a new version of vvm is available.
You're having a different issue - you're having an issue getting your message notifications. Can't help you with that one.

I just restored back to a version of BS 1.3 I backed up on Monday and my voicemail worked. But I got the voicemail upgrade message so I then flashed SteelH's voicemail zip and it now works perfect. I get my messages and notifications. Now I guess I try to load BS 1.5 again. But that'll wait until another day, I don't have the time now to completely wipe my phone and set it back up.
Thanks for the help.

no prob - and BS 1.5 includes the latest vvm too, so you won't need to use that zipfile again.
edit - just noticed you were on BS before all of this - I guess it was those other steps that messed things up for you.

I don't know what happened. I was working fine until I went to BS 1.5. When I went to BS 1.5 the notification to upgrade my voicemail was gone but my voicemail didn't work, that's when I started not getting my messages or notifications. And then I started trying to load different versions of the voicemail app and trying different things. But I agree with you, it's probably something I did while setting my phone back up after BS 1.5 and didn't know I did it.
Thanks again.

Upgrade to 1.32.651.6 failing

Everytime I try updating my phone OTA it starts and then it fails by showing a picture of a phone and a question mark above it. My phone is rooted I rooted it following a video on youtube by zedomax. But I guess it didnt work after I went through everything so then I use unrevoked and it worked. Unfortunately I been getting a lot of sd card errors so I really need this update. Someone please assist me in this.
You can't update a rooted phone using the downloaded OTA. You'll need to apply the rooted update.zip found in the upgrades forum for 1.32.651.6. Flash that in recovery and you'll have the latest ROM with root.
Thanks so much you really assisted me in upgrading my phone. If anyone else has the problem I did here is what I did. I downloaded the zip file from here a post by flipzmode. Just search the firmware thats what I did.
After I downloaded the file I placed the zip file in the root of my memory stick and I turned off my phone and turned it back on while holding the volume down button first then the lock button on the top. Once in the bootloader menu I went to recovery and the exclamation mark in the triangle showed up then I ran recovery-windows.bat and then I flashed the phone from my sd card and selected the new firmware.
Hi, do you have to reinstall all your apps and reconfigure the phone again? I rooted my phone, and I am not seeing any issues with the SD card. But I would hate to reconfigure all over again!! Please let me know.
Thanks.

Unless you have Titanium backup, you have to reinstall everything if you flash any roms. Try switching to wifi, go to your market, and into the downloads section. You may get lucky, and the apps that you have downloaded will be there, but you have to download them again. Being in wifi will speed up the download process.
Thanks for the info.
I use appbrain, which is pretty cool to create a backup of your apps. But even with that, you still have to install, and the worst part is configuring apps (user name and password) and also configuring my scene in EVO (folders, widgets, etc...) I have done this process 2 times and to do it one more time would be a pain. I am thinking if I have to do this everytime I need to update, might as well go unrooted. The only reason i went to root was to delete some annoying apps and to run wifi tethering. I rather leave with those two drawbacks than reconfiguring my EVO all the time when a new update is out.

[Q] Can someone tell me the correct way to use Titanium Backup?(

I tried on my own and after running it on new rom I get a "Parse error" type of message.
First I nandroid backup/swipe.
Then install the new rom(SPrint lovers 3.7)
Then I went right to the marketplace and downloaded TB again.
It tells me to go to settings/applications and check the install "Unknown apps install" button. so I do that.
Then I open TB again and go to batch, then I selected the restore all apps options and it gives me a error.
I read somewhere it says you have to install them one by one?
I read somewhere something about you have to mount a few programs or something?
I know I was able to do then in batch but try one by one it might work.

I see, well can you list the steps you would take to RESTORE the saved apps because I don't know if I did it the correct way or just forgot to install a side app.
well i figured it out from the link posted above, thanks. so i'll give it one more try.
I would recommend on buying the full version. Make sure you tap on PROBLEMS and then download BusyBox. Afterwards you can hit MENU-BATCH and BACKUP USER APPS. I'd recommend not messing with any of the other options. If you flash different ROM's a lot it's better to just backup the apps ONLY.
If you were to do for example BACKUP USER APPS and SYSTEM DATA that could potentially bring a whole bunch of errors on your new ROM's and tons of Force Closes.
What I prefer to do is to manually download all my apps between ROM swaps and then using Titanium Backup to restore the data. An example of what I'm talking about is if you have a game that you regularly play, you'd want to restore your data so you don't have to go through the game again. Hope that's simple enough to understand.
You said when you try to download it from the market it says check install unknown applications? Its not suppose to do that... You must have downloaded it and tried installing through a app like astro. If so download another version and try.

[Q] Several Problems

Everytime i boot up my epic this appears:
The application Titanium Backup (process.comkoushidutta.rommanger) has stopped unexpeectedly. Please try again.
This also appears everytime i boot into Facebook, Rom Manager, Google, XDA App.
Im running ACS Syndicate ROM v.1.2
Also, what Kernel fits Syndicate ROM the best and how can i change my lock screen into a puzzle?
And how do I put my phone back into stock? Just in case I have to send it back you know?
Thanks For All Your Help!
Odin and reflash and don't change kernels
Srf has that problem where it well just fc everywhere after a flash
Don't bother changing kernels cause they're the most dangerous flash plus you get a pretty good one with srf
You won't have to send our back but if you wanted to use odin
If you want the puzzle lock flash a7 lock theme or how ever many locks there are
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
Uninstall ROM manager. It does not work well with most Epics. Then boot into Clockwork with 3 finger from power off and clear cache and Dalvik.
Do I Have To Wipe Each Of Them 3x Or Just Once?
And will that fix all my other apps from force closing?
Also, everytime I send a text it won't go through UNLESS I stay in the text messaging area. If I send a text and then for instance go back to my home page the message won't send. Any help on that?

Well first off SRF 1.2 doesn't come with a kernel.
Now to the OP:
When I have used SRF in the pass I preferred Vision. YMMV!
One thing you want to do is enablejournaling to get that go here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071723
For a pretty good theme with the locks go here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099701
Make sure you read the instructions and understand them before doing any of this.
As far as going back to stock go here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
For step by step video's on all of this check out qbkings link in my sig.
Thanks!
But as far as apps, they still force closes
CAN THAT BE STOPPED!?
Also, what is "overscroll glow" and how can I get it?
And, where can I download the black market from?
@Taz what exactly is "journaling"?

Journaling does a extra write to ensure a good copy of data.
Not sure about "overscroll"
You might need to reflash the ROM boot up to your home screen let the media scan complete then reboot to CWM and flash journaling it won't fix the issue but will prevent it from happening again.
Okay & I just ran into another problem:
Everytime I open my music player it plays one song then freezes
By journaling would it fix this problem?
Also, it seems as if when I send a text the message doesnt send unless I stay in the message area for instance:
I send a message then go back to the home scren. The message won't send
I send a message & waits for it to send. The message sends.

Ok have you reflashed then enabled journaling? if no then that is where you start. You will continue to have problems till you do this. If you still have problems get back to us. I suspect you haven't done anything yet.
See everytime I try & download the journal, the download forces close just like the apps, so I'm sorta stuck

Download to PC and copy to sd card. Did you download the ROM wireless? If so you could have a bad D/L as well.

I would recommend copying the journaling by PC. You still have to reflash.
Okay being that I cannot get access to my PC, is there any other way to do this? The only positive in this scenerio is that I can get into clockwork and titanium backup.

You need a PC if you can't get it to move over cuz of crashes use CWM and mount sd card that way. Just do your back up FLASH your ROM if it is still on the card use PC to copy then enable journaling. If you have drop box on the device and it don't crash when open drop box it. Regardless you HAVE to REFLASH before you do anything else. Do you still have a nanback up? Go into CWM and restore from that to get yourself up and running till you can get all files you need onto your device.
Thanks all I had to do was flash the rom
Now should I upgrade my kernel to genocide or stay on twilight?
And I'm downloading the journal now, but how will I know if its on?
Edit: Ahh I found out what the problem is.
I have journal & all, but whe I installed the "shake & bake" theme, my apps started force closing.
Are there any good themes similar to that particular one?
Edit2: After installing the theme and the problems occurrred again, I reflashed my rom but now I keep getting force closes even without the theme. Any help?

I finally got mine rooted. Do everything in this post. I was able to remove KNOX and finally get my damn phone rooted! This was used to root my wife's Sprint Note 2 with the OTA 4.3 update. here
is the complete thread if you want to see it all. The link I posted first is the 3rd post from that thread.
Doing those steps WILL FIX your issues with not being able to root your Note 2.
I actually boot looped my wife's Note 2 in the process, so if you do brick/boot loop it, then follow these instructions. That put the phone back to the OTA 4.3 stock version. I had to put my wife's SD card into my phone and add the files to her SD card (provided in the link I just posted) to get it to work. Me being an idiot is how I boot looped her phone. This was the ONLY way I could get it to work... and I tried so many methods I found here, youtube, and online.
Good luck gentleman! Let me know if I can help you anymore!

i was wondering if the baseband version could have anything to do with it (im still new to rooting) i have L900VPUBMK4 on my phone but when i looked around in other places i noticed people having L900VPAMK4 is there a difference an could this be why mine wont root
i will try your method above an thanks so much for posting this i will let you know of my outcome

i cant even get passed step one
I finally rooted my note 2
i tried cf's method an im not sure what went wrong but something did an it wouldnt root so i then tried kingo but at first i noticed that when connecting my note to kingo it just said samsung device it didnt reconize it fully to it saying samsung sphl900 so i knew something wasnt right an then after trying to root it failed so i then noticed that in download mode it said it was customized so i downloaded USER_L900_SPT_MC2_to_MK4_Update_FWD an used odin an then opened the download again on my phone an it finally said samsung official so i then went back to kingo an it did reconize my phone an it did finally root it ,,, im new to rooting an not sure if this will actually help anyone but its what i went thru to get mine rooted an thanks to everyone that has helped me

I had the same issue and fixed it like this -
1. Installed ES File explorer and open it.
2. Press Menu on the phone and scroll down and turn ON Root Explorer and hit Back.
3. Choose Device from the top menu (dropdown)
4. From the bottom menu, choose search and search for super and you should see superuser.apk.
5. Choose that and install it.
From there you should be able to disable KNOX and open SuperSu

I tried this to no avail, getting error message 'Application not installed'. The thing is, when I go into the Play Store it says SuperSU IS installed but I only have the option to open it. There is no 'update' option available like I keep reading everyone suggests to do to fix this problem. And when I attempt to open SuperSU, I get the error message 'Unfortunately, SuperSU has stopped' followed by the KNOX security notice 'Unauthorized access to a secured area has been blocked'.

Same.
Everyone I figured out a simple solution to this. I got my phone back on the 13 from replacement. On the 16 I tried to root for the first time. And KNOX led me into a panic. Reading all the forums and knox blocked every attempt I made, but I neat that ***** into the ground.
1. Get some kind of file Explorer and find the SuperSU apk.
2. ReInstall that bad boy.
3. Immediately after install a message will appear asking if SuperSU can try to disable KNOX.
4. Click it quickly, if you don't knox will try to block it again.
5. You should now have KNOX out of the way. You should now be free to delete that slut!
I chose system app safe remover and searched for all files with KNOX and deleted it. I feel you could probably kill it with any root explorer and know the files you are looking for.

For further clarification, simply clicking on it did not work for me. It gave me an "There is a problem parsing the package."
If you long press on the file then select More from the bottom menu then select Install, it will install properly.
Just wanted to clarify for anybody else who ended up with that issue.
It worked!

This worked for me. Once I reinstalled the SuperUser APK, ES asked for access and everything else fell into place. Thanks!
use esfile to solve it

I tried this to no avail, getting error message 'Application not installed'. The thing is, when I go into the Play Store it says SuperSU IS installed but I only have the option to open it. There is no 'update' option available like I keep reading everyone suggests to do to fix this problem. And when I attempt to open SuperSU, I get the error message 'Unfortunately, SuperSU has stopped' followed by the KNOX security notice 'Unauthorized access to a secured area has been blocked'.

I got this done by the following:
1. Do exactly as aforementioned instruction, untill you find superuser.apk
2. Hold your finger on that apk icon untill a little squre show up that you can mark it
3. Find "more"(my is at the right lower corner of the screen), choose it and find "install" on your right.
4. Then install.
I dont know why this apk can be installed through es file, basically it still needs to Android to run the installation, yet it works in this way.
have a try and good luck
I keep having to go back into the file explorer and installing it. It will work for a while then out of the blue it pops up and says it has quit. I am very skeptical to try and go through the flash process to install a different ROM. Currently bone stock 4.3 eff bomb. Any suggestions?

Try and use ODIN to flash TWRP then flash @billard412 to get back to MC2 stock, it will remove KNOX and reset flash counters, if any. Then ODIN TWRP again since it will re-install the stock recovery you can then flash the MK4 kernel, WIFI Fix and MK4 ROM of your choice.

Ok....since you tripped KNOX you cant get rid of that but its ok if you are not returning your phone (maybe out of warranty?) then just ignore it.
Flash away!
Ya the warranty didn't mean squat...I went ahead and tried the SGS3 JELLYBOMB VER 20.0.0.MD5 and it went with no problems. Haven't got the SuperSU has stopped since flashing. Thanks for the encouragement here. So far so good.

Not sure what version you're running, but you should be able to go to Setting, Applications (Applications Manager) whatever you have.
Find Samsung Update, stop it and uncheck notifications.
Sorry, I thought it was assumed. Im on ver 4.1.2
Also, the update comes from att. Greyed out in
App manager. Now what?

With root not an option, not too sure....
I have ideas....
I'm really not sure if download has really been completed. You should have been prompted multiple times to accept the update, and the download.
Same goes for installing it, it requires multiple prompts and you must say continue.
So, the download gets saved in the /cache directory. If I'm right, and I should be, you should be able to power your phone down,
Then boot into stock recovery and clear cache which will delete the downloaded cache update file.
Boot into stock recovery (HOLD VOL UP+HOME+POWER)

You want to choose wipe cache partition.
Then when you boot back up, race over to Settings, Applications again and stop the update service. I'd leave notifications turned on for now just to watch what the update process is attempting.
The dl started on its own. Finished too I would bet. Tried killing dl by reboot.
No joy.att must really want us to have this-I had to fetch the 2 previous updates
As I mentioned. Now I have cont/pp dialogue every 8 hrs. Process for notification is
Com.wssyncmldm -afraid to use stock recovery- I dontknow that it wont goof up
Something else-and my cache directory shows empty. (Using es explorer)

You have to be root to really see what's in /cache.
Stock recovery really is harmless, for the most part. If you choose data/factory reset all of your installed apps (ones that you have downloaded and installed) are torched and your settings, like Google account info, mail setup etc.
Cleaning out /cache is a good thing.
Maybe someone else will stop by and have another suggestion, but since you said root is not an option, I can't think of another way right now to stop it from bugging.
Well, i suspected there was nothing i could do without root. something simple. the greyed out att update process
along with the attempt to force feed the update to me speaks volumes. to me. I've seen way too much of things i
don't like with this 4.3 silliness(improve my hardware, ok). they're going to have to do better than bug me every
8 hours to get me to install it....
thanks for the suggestions,
