Upgrade to 1.32.651.6 failing - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Everytime I try updating my phone OTA it starts and then it fails by showing a picture of a phone and a question mark above it. My phone is rooted I rooted it following a video on youtube by zedomax. But I guess it didnt work after I went through everything so then I use unrevoked and it worked. Unfortunately I been getting a lot of sd card errors so I really need this update. Someone please assist me in this.

You can't update a rooted phone using the downloaded OTA. You'll need to apply the rooted update.zip found in the upgrades forum for 1.32.651.6. Flash that in recovery and you'll have the latest ROM with root.

Thanks so much you really assisted me in upgrading my phone. If anyone else has the problem I did here is what I did. I downloaded the zip file from here a post by flipzmode. Just search the firmware thats what I did.
After I downloaded the file I placed the zip file in the root of my memory stick and I turned off my phone and turned it back on while holding the volume down button first then the lock button on the top. Once in the bootloader menu I went to recovery and the exclamation mark in the triangle showed up then I ran recovery-windows.bat and then I flashed the phone from my sd card and selected the new firmware.

Hi, do you have to reinstall all your apps and reconfigure the phone again? I rooted my phone, and I am not seeing any issues with the SD card. But I would hate to reconfigure all over again!! Please let me know.
Thanks.

Unless you have Titanium backup, you have to reinstall everything if you flash any roms. Try switching to wifi, go to your market, and into the downloads section. You may get lucky, and the apps that you have downloaded will be there, but you have to download them again. Being in wifi will speed up the download process.

Thanks for the info.
I use appbrain, which is pretty cool to create a backup of your apps. But even with that, you still have to install, and the worst part is configuring apps (user name and password) and also configuring my scene in EVO (folders, widgets, etc...) I have done this process 2 times and to do it one more time would be a pain. I am thinking if I have to do this everytime I need to update, might as well go unrooted. The only reason i went to root was to delete some annoying apps and to run wifi tethering. I rather leave with those two drawbacks than reconfiguring my EVO all the time when a new update is out.

[Q] Voicemail: An optional upgrade is now available.

So I've got this notification that will not go away. (clearing does nothing).
When I tap on it, it says it's downloading an upgrade to what appears to be stock voicemail mail. When done, it asks
Code:
This is a system application. Do you still want to replace it?
All previous user data will be saved.
When I hit "OK", I get the standard install approval screen, hit "install", then get bounced to a screen that just says "Application not installed" with just a "done" on the bottom.
Seeing as how I use Google Voice for my voicemail and not sprint, I could care less about the regular voicemail app, but being able to get rid of the notification would be great.
Any help in trying to remove this annoying notification would be awesome.
Thanks!
Just delete the sprint vvm.apk from /system/ and that should do it.
I'm having the exact same problem. I've tried moving the vvm apk out from underneath after the download finishes and the install is about to start, and no joy. I still get "not installed."
Thoughts?
I'm guessing that I have to remove this file using something other than Astro? Keeps telling me that it can't delete files, looks like the permissiosn are read only, and I can't find a way to change the permissions.
You need to be rooted to write to system. Then you can use adb or root explorer.
Sent from my FROYO'D EVO using xda app
If you're using a custom ROM Sprint stuff may not update because the developer of your ROM signed it. Check for updates with your ROM developer (website or an update tool), most of the developers have already made their own VVM update from Sprint's release.
Just another hole to cover so we can't root, just a thought.
Same problem here. Renaming the .apk via adb then rebooting did the trick.
Guys, I figured this one out today.
I got the same "unable to install" message when I tried to install the new one. First thing I did, was uninstall the stock one using Titanium backup, but any method should work the same. Then rebooted the phone and tried the install again.
It went through with no problems. Check my sig for info, but I think this should work with any custom ROM.
Also, please note that I had a copy of the install file on my SD card and I accessed it via EStrongs file explorer. Again, I don't think it matters which file explorer you use, but having it on your SD card may be the key.
Edit: I used this link to get the file on my SD card:

Did you follow my previous post?
1) DL the file on the link I provided from another thread on here.
2) Mount your SD as disk drive and click and drag it onto your SD card.
3) Uninstall the current voicemail app on your phone (if you don't have Titanium backup paid version, you will need to use Astro or another app that can uninstall apps from the phone)
4) Reboot your phone.
5) Use a file explorer to find the zip file you put on your phone, and install it.
You should be good to go.

I followed these instructions step by step and I can get the voicemail app to load but it doesn't work. I don't get my messages, I hit the "check for updates" button and get a box that comes up and tells me there was a general error. I've updated my profile and my prl. Please let me know what I need to do to get this fixed. I'm on BS 1.5.
Thanks in Advance

Well, I am not an expert by any means. I can tell you that this worked for me the first time I tried it. By any chance, can you install the old version back on? Or, did you back-up your ROM in any way where you can go back to the way your phone was before you started so at least the old app is on there and working?
If not, hopefully someone can chime in who knows more on the subject.
easiest way of fixing this should be to use SteelH's flashable vvm update zip found on his rom thread here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743781
I think it works on any rom.

I did the following steps and still no go.
1. Flashed SteelH's zip.
2. Updated my profile.
3. Updated my prl.
4. Rebooted.
5. Called my cell and left two voicemails.
I never got a notitication and when I try to check for updates I get a general error. And when I hit the button to change my greeting, a box comes up saying it will connect me with my voicemail, but nothing ever happens.
I found an old version of the voicemail app and tried that and I get the same results. I must be doing something wrong or there is something wrong with my phone.
Any ideas for me to try, would be greatly apperciated.

Sorry - that link will only solve the issue in the OP - how to update to the latest version of vvm (v5.1.0.34), and get rid of notifications that a new version of vvm is available.
You're having a different issue - you're having an issue getting your message notifications. Can't help you with that one.
I just restored back to a version of BS 1.3 I backed up on Monday and my voicemail worked. But I got the voicemail upgrade message so I then flashed SteelH's voicemail zip and it now works perfect. I get my messages and notifications. Now I guess I try to load BS 1.5 again. But that'll wait until another day, I don't have the time now to completely wipe my phone and set it back up.
Thanks for the help.

no prob - and BS 1.5 includes the latest vvm too, so you won't need to use that zipfile again.
edit - just noticed you were on BS before all of this - I guess it was those other steps that messed things up for you.
I don't know what happened. I was working fine until I went to BS 1.5. When I went to BS 1.5 the notification to upgrade my voicemail was gone but my voicemail didn't work, that's when I started not getting my messages or notifications. And then I started trying to load different versions of the voicemail app and trying different things. But I agree with you, it's probably something I did while setting my phone back up after BS 1.5 and didn't know I did it.
Thanks again.

[Q] fix the evo market after root

After rooting my sprint evo 4g my market no longer works. I have tried the advice from gat (gadgets and tablets) but that did not work. What do I do???
Need more specifics. "Not working" is very general haha
Does this mean:
1) Won't load
2) Won't download apps
3) Isn't showing up at all
4) Is just force closing like it's its job
It will let me even search for an ap most of the time but will not let me download and will force close every time. This puts a damper on tethering because I cannot download the wireless tether after root ap. I'm still on clockwork mod and rooted via unrevoked
I'm actually downloading another ROM, MikFroYo 4.5, in hopes that flashing another ROM would give the market another chance to work properly. All the people I know that have rooted androids, including one with an evo, have fully working markets and can still download aps. I am not sure of another way to get the wireless tether after root or titanium backup. I have been trying to learn from forums and google but I seem to be coming to a dead end on this topic. It seems to be happening to some other people but nobody has given them a useful answer it seems. The best answer I found was from GAT but they were specifically doing the process on a tablet and after trying this process my market was still a lame duck. Also, while someone is checking on this thread (thanks so much by the way, this is the second time I tried to get some feedback on this forum and the first went by unanswered for about a half a week), what would be a good ROM that would not take away 4g capabilities, let me get an ap back like sprint t.v. but still allow most sprint aps (nascar, blockbuster, nova, etc.) to be deleted (although I think I can do this with titanium backup if I can ever get it downloaded), improve speed and battery life, and not be very glitchy/buggy?

Okay, go to the 2nd post in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=900584
There's a .zip for the stock android market. Boot into recover (if you don't have rom manager, turn off phone, volume down + power, select recovery) and flash the zip. Should install the working stock market. I used it when I uninstalled updates using Titanium Back-up and it deleted my whole market.
thanks dude i'll check it out.

eww, I had high hopes but it still force closes when I try and download wireless tether. Any other suggestions? In the mean time I'm going to see if using another ROM might help the situation...maybe give it a fresh start or something.
Yeah same story after new ROM...not able to download anything yet anybody else had the same problem and came out on top/would love to hear your solution?
What rom were u running first? Try flashing a stock rooted rom? If that doesn't work try ruu but leave s-off so it's easy to re-root quckly.

clockwork standard untouched from unrevoked and now mikfroyo 4.5...still no luck. I'll try another ROM but I think I have to have a new market or something like that. Is ruu unrooting?
Are you wiping data and cache each time you flash a new ROM? If not, you probably need to.
Are you restoring apps with Titanium Backup after flashing the new ROM? If so, only restore user apps (i.e. don't restore system apps). I've seen some squirrelly things happened when restoring system apps.
Last thing, from your home screen, try going in to Settings...Applications...Manage Applications. Tap on the "All" tab at the top and scroll down to Market and select it. Tap on the "Clear Data" button under Cache.
think i got it under control
You need to reflash gapps if you flashed a new cm rom

How do i root my incredible?

How do i root my droid incredible s?
I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOU FOLLOWING THIS PROCESS.
First of all, you must check if your smart-phone is on S-ON or S-OFF version. 1 – Open menu and then to Settings, you will see ‘Applications’ Go to it and turn off Fast Boot. 2 – You must turn off your smart-phone. 3 -Now you’re going to boot your smart-phone into Hboot. You can easily do that by holding the volume down button while turning the device back on. 4 – Most likely, you will see a white screen and you will have to look on the first line to see which version your smart-phone is depending upon. Your phone should be on S-OFF version if you want to root your phone and flash custom ROM's.
To get S-Off you need to use an XTC Clip or wait for AlphaRevX
Please, you must follow these instructions to the letter.
Now that your Smart-phone is of S-OFF version and you’re all set to root your phone.
- Download Gingerbreak APK - Make sure USB debugging is enabled - Make sure you have an SD card (formatted and) inserted - Get the APK on the phone somehow, and install it - Open the APK, press the root button - Wait a few minutes. If there are no problems, the device will reboot (note that the reboot itself can take like 10 minutes due to cache wipe) - Make sure the Superuser app is install and working - Optional: Install BusyBox from Market (I personally prefer the stericsson installer) - Optional: Uninstall GingerBreak, you don't need it on your phone anymore
Get CWM (Clock Work Mod) on the device. - download ROM Manager from the market. - Open the app and Flash/install Clock Work Mod Recovery.

2. I'll be nice and point you to where you should be asking this question, or you can browse around and find the thread that will give you a guide to rooting.

This is the only way to root gingerbread on the dinc.

Unrevoked does not work on gingerbread for our phones.

when i try to root with unrEVOked i get "is your firmware to new". not sure what im doing wrong. I've even tried showing it the custom clockwork mod .img
May I tag along?
I have decided to root my Dinc. Currently on 2.2
I am getting this constant notice to install the System Update 4.08.605.2.
The message states that it is ready to install.
Can I choose "install later" and then proceed and root with unrevoked ?
Or will the update install first, when my phone reboots again?
Is this a valid concern ?

If you want to root your phone do not accept the update. Root it first, go here and follow the instruction www.unrevoked.com after that you can flash a custom Gingerbread ROM. Do some research before flashing anything, patience for this pays off believe me!
I've done considerable research. Enough to learn that I do not want this update before rooting my phone.
My concern is that the update has been downloaded onto my phone and awaiting a reboot to install. Is that possible ?
When I go to: menu-settings-about phone-system updates, I see this:
Android Software Update
(4.08.605.02)
Downloaded and Verified 87.7 MB
Bla-Bla-Bla......
Restart & Install
Can I proceed with root anyway ?

Help, I have a problem...
I ran the Unrevoked3 and got the "your done" message. My phone was fully booted.
Everything appeared to be normal.
I installed Titanium, that tells me I have root access.
However, I cant get into clockworkmod.
I can't do anything with rom manager.
Then I remembered that I did not format my sd card to fat32.
Here is where I messed up.
I copied the contents of the sdcard to my desktop, formatted to fat32, then copied contents from desktop file back to sdcard.
Then I ran the unrevoked3 again. It did not finish, instead it ended with the "firmware too new" message. The phone was still in HBOOT.
Next, somehow I inadvertantly selected "clear storage" and pressed the power button.
When I was booted up again, all of my downloaded apps were gone, as well as my contacts and settings.
I figured at this point I might as well do a factory reset too and just start over from the beginning.
After the reset, I was surprised to see I still had my email settings.
I went into HBOOT, still S-off.
Rebooted and ran Unrevoked3 again and got the same results as above.
All seems to be ok, except I'm not rooted and I can't access the Wifi setup.
What should I do now ?
From what I gather, you are still s-off.
What troubles were you having in accessing CWM? What issues arose in rom manager? Did you also have superuser installed (requirement to use rooted apps)? Please elaborate.
SINCE the factory reset, have you re-downloaded Rom Manager and do you have access to the Android Market? You may want to re-download rom manager so you can perform a backup of your stock rom (i.e. prior to flashing roms) once you set up your phone how you want due to your accidental factory reset.
I say "may" because the same backup process can be performed via recovery. Recovery can be downloaded from: "http://pvillecomp.com?page_id=128"
Once downloaded, you must install the file via hboot, so reboot and accept the update and DO NOT let your phone off.
To address your present situation,
Were your contacts stored in gmail OR Verizon backup assistant? If so, those are easily retrieved. You may want them in gmail now on to avoid this from occurring in the future.
What issues are you having with accessing wifi set up? Are you able to access it at all via Settings/Wireless Networks?
Thanks in advance for your help.
I am still s-off
When I first initiated the unrevoked process, my phone indicated an “unable to read file” error when the process was “flashing clockworkmod”
Rom manager failed to flash and “forced close”
Wi Fi displays “error”, can't access via settings.
I was working on my PC. Then since my last post, I tried this on my laptop last night.
This time, the unrevoked batch process indicated “Success !” and then “Done”
My phone did not display any error messages and finished in a black screen with orange scrolling text and then the phone rebooted.
Wi-Fi still displays “error” when I tap it.
I downloaded Rom manager and initiated Flash ClockworkMod recovery, and it completed without error. Current recovery: ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0 ( I did not Erase Recovery first )
I have Superuser Permission app in the drawer, but not Superuser. Neither shows up in Manage applications.
I also download Titanium backup. It shows Root access: OK (BusyBox 1.18.4-Titanium from app)
I don't know if that indicates that I am rooted or not.

Congrats your rooted! Not sure what the issue is with your wifi tho. Try a custom Rom/Kernel and see if that fixes the issue.
We are talking about the same Superuser, which is great cuz your rooted apps work. The wifi issue should not be happening although that occurred with the accidental clear storage. If you plan on flashing a rom then this will not be present as you will format data, cache, etc and essentially wipe your phone to the point of a clean state. You are definitely rooted as you have CWM 5.0 as your recovery.
Have you retrieved your contacts? Prior to flashing ANYTHING that involves wiping in recovery or rom manager, ensure you have them saved in gmail OR Verizon backup.

Yes, I am saying that a custom Rom/Kernel might fix your WiFi issue.
As for backing up thru recovery it mean booting into CWM, and making a backup. I do this instead of backing up thru Rom Manager because I have had some issues with Rom Manager.

When I root my phone it says I am rooted when I press wireless tether I get serveral messages the first one says sorry but your kernel does not have all necessary features for running this application. I tried pressing ignore then I got message that this application will not work properly. Then I get message that says unable to start tethering is your device rooted. My software z4root says I am rooted and seems to work. Yet the wire less tether does not see that I am rooted.
Yesterday I got the update message on Android incredible. But it did not work. Got the not enough space message. I did move a lot of my apps to my sd card could this be the problem? I also have enabled acess control in wireless tether app. Also enable wifi encryption is checked? I still have version 2.2. Please help me I love using this.
Why don't you just permanent root with unrevocked?

root
I was afraid it would do something that I did not know how to reverse if I do not want it permanently rooted?

Is safe and if for any reason you don't want permanent root there's way to go back stock/unrooted

Well in the developers world we call it permanent because you can restart/turn off and the device stay rooted. Unlike temporary you restart and the root is gone

I tried unrevoked. Downloaded all software. It went through all processes and keeps getting stuck after rooting. Says phone temporarily lost comunication. Can't seem to get past this error message?

Your default connection type has to "charge only" and "never ask". Also, you have to check "unknown sources" under settings>applications, and usb debuging has to be checked.
Have you installed the adb drivers on your pc?
Also htc sync can not be installed in your pc when using unrevoked.
Here is a great beginers guide to rooting and what to d after rooted.

I am thrilled, Got. Phone rooted. Used 4share app. Downloaded 4zroot.apk app. Installed it. Looked like it did not work. Stuck on rooting. After I powered off and on phone was rooted. I have only used this for tethering. Is there any way to save battery life with rooted phone.

Yes! Flash a custom Rom and Kernel and you will see a great improvement on battery life. The best kernels I have used with great battery performance are Incredikernel and Gingertiny. Do some research first then start flashing, and make sure you do a backup before flashing anything.
PM me if you need any help or a step by step

Does backing up rooted phone mean that I have all my downloaded apps and data on either my computer or my sd card. Is there anything else I need to back up? Right now I only have one program that I downloaded that is not from the market. All my contacts are on my gmail account?

When you back up with recovery it backs up your entire phone to the clockwork folder on your sdcard. It is highly recommended that you copy the backup folder to your pc on a regular basis just in case something goes wrong with your sd.
Ok just downloaded clockwork. Haven't really done anything else with the phone since it is rooted. Other than get wireless hotspot.
I am just learning about Roms and Flashing. What OS system would you recommend for the incredible. I installed Rom Manager. That is where I got clockwork from. Seems like an easy program. Do I need to erase anything on my phone manually before I put a new OS system on it?
Never mind just rebooted and everything is there.
Just backed up my sd card. But Now it shows empty on my phone and it says sd card needs to be mounted when I open ROM manager. How do I get my stuff back on the SD card? I just copied it to a file on my computer. I do not understand what happended to everything on the card.
PLEASE HELP
I clicked on clockwork recovery it went through the process. When I look at the clockwork file on my sd card it does not say anything about a back up there are some files in download folder is that the backup? Is there any OS that I can install that won't wipe the phone clean? And if I do wipe the phone how do I put back my stuff like ringtones etc.
There are a ton of things you can do to save battery life... Search the threads and you will find a lot of info....
Some things to start with... Turn off phone finder, use ROM toolbox to increase WiFi scan intervals, use sleep mode at night, don't use ES file explorer, etc
Lots of options

AT&T Update Help

I received the notification to update this morning to 4.4, however the update started to apply, it kicked it out with a suspected root error. Before applying the update, I had already uninstalled Xposed and unrooted my phone, so I am not sure what set off the root checker. I was wondering what my options were at this point. I know I can flash back to stock, but I would like to avoid this if at all possible. Are there any alternatives, or will I be forced to flash back to stock?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm having exactly the same issue. I used the one click root method and have unrooted using full unroot in SuperSu.
But it appears full unroot per SuperSu is not enough? I tried root checker in Play Store and it says I am not rooted.
When I run the install it takes a long time to download and gave 0x13e error after the reboot while upgrading.
I also tried the LG PC Suite but it says my phone has the most current version, that is weird...
This OTA seems to be very picky as I was able to update in January 2014 fully rooted....
I wonder if I need to flash the IOT and go through the hassle of reinstalling all apps and config....that's a lot of hassle...

It is very strange but if I try update recovery it says my battery does not have enough charge. (but battery is at 100%).
I even bought a new battery. I did disable carrier iq spying service before I unroot.
Do I have to enable carrier iq spy in order to upgrade?

Your phone needs to be 100% stock in order for OTA updates to work. This means:
no custom recovery (CWM, TWRP, etc)
all bloatware must be present
you can't be rooted
all system services must be like stock (this includes carrier IQ, so yes, it needs to be reenabled).
If you can't get the OTA to update after fixing everything, try flashing this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2760895
This IS the ATT stock ROM, but mildly debloated. The creator only debloated things that could be installed via the Play Store though (like Google Music, Newstand, Books, etc), so there isn't anything like the remote app or something missing.
I flashed this version because I'm too lazy to try and return my phone to pure stock just to get the OTA and then have to reflash root and a custom recovery. Too much work for me.
EDIT: I'm not too sure what's going on with your recovery... I hope someone else can answer that for you.
The easiest thing to do is just flash the 4.4.2 Rom found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2760895
This route saves allot of time having to flash back to pure stock, wait for your phone to receive the update again, and your phone taking forever to download said update.

Thanks a lot. This is my wife's phone so she'd rather not to update if a data wipe is required. She's actually quite happy with 4.1.
Anything extra would only be a "good to have". I think I'll keep it on 4.1 until she switches to another phone.
I did download the slightly customized stock rom so that it could be updated in the future.
In fact, I still have stock recovery and the only reason I rooted was to disable carrier iq because it was doing funny things with the GPS, very annoying.
There is no other way to disable carrier iq without rooting...unfortunately...

If you flash that ROM over her current stock ROM, it should act just like an OTA update and replace the JB OS with the KK OS. It should also replace JB version Google apps with KK ones too.
If you decide to do this, you will need to do 3 things:
1) Make a backup just in case, but then copy the backup to your PC
2) Backup the internal SD to a PC and then format the internal storage. (see *2 below as to why)
3) After the flash, you will need to install the apk from the following thread and use it to install a Kitkat compatible CWM. If you don't while in recovery at any time, you may get stuck in what's called the Recovery Bootloop. Basically, every time you try to reboot the phone into the system (whether from a powered off state or from recovery), you will always go back to recovery.
The only bad thing about this recovery is that it can't read external SD cards, so anything you want to flash/backup will need to be stored on internal storage.
*2) Kitkat uses a different directory system for internal storage. If you were to not wipe the internal SD and managed to get the OTA working, it would wipe the drive for you automatically (which means all your data would be gone!).
However, with this flashable stock ROM, what will happen instead, is that all your data will remain, but will be hidden from view/access. If you have root, you can get it and move it, but it's a pain. Otherwise, your files are hidden from you, yet the system reads X amount of your internal storage as being occupied by "Miscellaneous" files, yet shows that nothing is there.
So just backup the files, then format the internal storage (which will leave her apps alone) before updating. Then flash that ROM and then copy the files back over.
All this is up to you and your wife as to whether or not you deem it to be worth the effort.
