[Q] Rooting HTC Evo with Froyo - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I am looking to root my Evo that is running Froyo. I have absolutely no idea how to do it as I just switched over to Android. Is it possible to root on 2.2? What is the easiest way to do it? How can I back up all my pics, apps, contacts, messages?? Thanks for any help!!!

see here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7738116#post7738116

Damn ok!! That sucks!! I was hoping to get a new theme

smh
dude,, it is not yet possible to root 2.2 .

Just letting you know before every one flames you.

lol that would make front page xda news

Not if they forgot to upload the tut but I'm done with feeling root-helpless so I'm trading in my evo for a new one, hopefully the factory I'd pumping then out without any of the updates.....but I guess I'll let you all know, I'm not good at feeling stagnant waiting for someone else to accomplish an exploit for me

Dude really, come on thats a lame excuse, you came onto the boards, had a question that needed an answer, most people would say "hey look they have a question and answer forum all setup" and then go use it.
And then right at the top is this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747495
Which states in bold letters "THERE IS NO KNOWN WAY TO ROOT FROYO 2.2", question answered and you never even had to hit the search function.
Your question is "root froyo" try typing that in, get back a crap ton of results.
If your ever in doubt as to what to search for just type in a natural language question, ex: "how do I root 2.2" and you will get an answer.

Long story short. Not yet. It's in the works. Keep checking back periodically ( I think I dispelled that ).

I originally thought Unrevoked Forever had solved this problem, but you still need a custom recovery. So you're still waiting for an exploit, sorry.

Has anyone tried the CyanogenMod for the EVO?

I was thinking about installing this mod. I saw it running very smoothly on an HD2 dual-boot a friend of mine has.
Is there anyone running the latest version of this image? If so are there any hardware issues? Does the 4G still work? Does it make coffee now?
Thanks,
Nick
I don't think you'll have much luck here. I don't think anyone around here is running cm on their EVO's. Is he even working on a version for the EVO?

It's okay, just do the 2.2 OTA and then root from there. I think it's pretty painless, I know there's a thread about it somewhere . . . can't find it right now.

Thanks Laydros,
My friend just told me that his HD2 just went to sleep and he had to reboot so it is surely not stable yet on the HD2. I would still be willing to try it on my EVO if anyone else has tried it first.
The UI looks pretty nice with a draggable menu at the bottom for multiple home row buttons.

yeah i know right? lol
i think what you have to do is flash a 2.2 rom, and while its installing, yank the battery. this will take you to the froyo debug screen and ask if you want to flash a cyanogen mod.
edit: ok that was a joke, I have to say that because I know there are people that will try it! sorry...

I like how on your 2nd post, after making what has to be in the top 5 mind boogling stupid questions I have seen on here, you act like you really did ask a valid question.
Don't tell me you are a nuclear scientist, I won't believe it. I would need credentials.

So explain to me how my question was stupid? I got a response from you apparently. Do you make a habit of flexing your intelligence on "stupid" postings?
This could very well make you a stupid person.
Read! Have you even looked at any posts at all here? Or did you just post your question and only focus on it? Seriously man, you are getting bashed here sooooo bad. Take ten seconds and look at other posts, either here in q and a or in the development section. Just trying to save you some pain.

The question is somewhat puzzling.
I thought it was a simple question.
I got every tom **** and harry jumping in to say something. Yet no one can answer the question. Maybe I need to create my own forum just for dumb people like me. O wait a minute XDA beat me to it.

Thanks, I spent five minutes searching. What did you find before you advised me to "READ!" and search?
Don't advise me to search unless you know for sure that I missed something. Your guessing there is a better thread and calling me stupid for not finding it.
Again, has anyone successfully gotten this mod on their EVO? If there is another thread talking about Cyanogen Mod 6 on EVO then direct me.
Dude, there's a thread in development dedicated to the RC with thousands of replies. I think we can all safely say that at least one other person has tried it. The water is safe. Hop in, but don't forget your life jacket. I'm sure you'll need it.
And before you complain that we're not helpful... no, the 4G doesn't work. Your mms may not work either.

I just wanted to say great first post...hopefully someone will find the way to root YOUR phone because according to the 100 or so other threads, if you would have SEARCHED FIRST nobody else has been able to get it but I have faith you might be the one. So please when you get the way to root will you please share it with the rest of us! But you might wanna check the first thread at the top of the Q and A forum I think the info u need is there. So when you figure root out please report back how you did it! Oh thanks again for one of the best first posts we have seen...
P.S. HOW FA KING HARD IS IT TO SEARCH BEFORE YOU FA KING POST!

Novice w/ New Evo 4g wanting to flash it to Boost But...

I know i'm not the only one but i'm like a kid waiting for Christmas. In short, I bought a new Evo 4G used, its not even 2 weeks old. Gingerbread is on it (4.22.651.2) and im waiting for the ability to root /unroot [which way im not sure] and last i was told its Ruu is not made or found yet. Please make this an easy transition and let me know here if the Ruu is created and if the steps will be different than the other steps you've guys shown here and on youtube, please! Also, I'm paying for Boost's blackberry service (60 bux a month) which i won't need when i get the Evo 4G going. I would be over grateful for your patience and consideration. Also, i did do my due diligence to look for all the info and tried several rooting options i.e.: Unrevoked3 and so on, with no luck.
Thanks!!

If you would have looked harder (sarcasm), you would have found that there is not root method for the newest OTA update. There are dozens of threads pointing this out.
Thanks, tgruendler [re-sarcasm] I did indicate that i knew the OTA wasn't able to be rooted yet HOWEVERm if it did come about if it could be posted here, i'd Highly appreciate it since there is a TON of information throughout the site! Yet, Thanks for the Razzin'

Not sure I understand your question but I presently have a Blackberry 8530 on Boost mobile but i just bought a Evo 4G which it seems to have been updated to Gingerbread 2.3.3. I can not root it to switch it to boost. I don't know if anything in your thread helped. But thanks!
you dont need root in order to get it on boost mobile
you just need to fix some things ,, due to forum rules i dont know the legal wording to use .....but on gb its a lil tricky to get the info fixed and that is where i am in this moment in time

Any progress on 2.3.4 Root update? Besides Clip?

The reason that i ask this question is that i bought my mother a droid incredible 2 as she needed a solid phone to use for her business and something for her emails, easy web access, amongst many other things business oriented that her LG flip phone couldnt do. The issue is i dont live anwhere near her so i cant do the only root methof that we currently have, bc im not there, and it would be overly dificult to remote in and explain to her and all that. My question is, is there going to be something as easy as unrevoked or revolutionary that will come out for this update? THat i can explain over the phone, not a problem. Dont flame me for asking, if you look at my stats ive been here for some time and dont need someone telling me to wait if im a noob, im not, i just dont have easy access to the phone. also, is there any easy way to to tether? without root? like changing something in the service menu? that is a fool proof tested way to work? sorry for all the questions, ive stopped coming here for a while bc f some dooche in the fascinate forums, that ended up in the thunderbolt forums, that then ended up in the bionic forums and i just got tired of him. Good to be back all, thanks in advance for any help

I've read through the forums and the answer seems to be, "Yes, you can now obtain root without the clip. But only if you're competent in Swahili, like everyone ought to be. Otherwise, you don't have any business asking questions about how to do it."
