[Q] Gowalla Anyone - Windows Mobile Software Development

Is there anyone out there working on a Gowalla app for WinMO? They just recently released their API, but they don't plan on getting around to WinMo development for a while. (a loooong while) I even know one of the co-owners and he's like "well we released the API and are just waiting for some one to do something with it." If I knew anything about programming I'd be all over it, but alas I'm a lowly videographer. Thanx for your replies in advance.

Gowalla, Brightkite or something similiar, I think still doesn't exist for WinMo. I suggess you must move to Foursquare and use 4Square app for WinMo!

Hi.
Don´t use Foursquare for WinMo - It dosen´t work properly.
Use the Application MySquare developed by junalmeida
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730084 or get it from XDA Marketplace.
//Best regards

I was wondering has there been any development at all now on a Gowalla app for windows since Disney has partnered with them with the parks recvently, and their mobile site doesnt work on my phone at all.
(or has anyone found a workaround to get location based service to work in a web-browser on a windows phone)

Pandora on Windows Mobile

Anyone with an iPhone want to hack the Pandora application and see if we can get a version working on Windows Mobile?
You cant just take something from the iphone and port it to window mobile. I have been waiting forever for Pandora on my WM phone, but now I have it on my iPod......so I wouldn't hold out any hope that they will come out with something.
Yeah, I know - what I was hoping is that someone with the application could help us figure out the streaming protocol it uses, and then we could write a WM app to do the same thing. Maybe this is too difficult.
Sounds like a great idea. If it works over wifi the network traffic can be observed etc.

Huh? What does that have to do with the original question?
I wish. I love pandora but I can't have it on my phone. One real thing I am jealous about.
i've heard it works with the skyfire browser...but I'm getting the feeling I will never get into that beta. Isn't there a AT&T pandora program? I believe it's a pay to use feature however.
Maybe we should get in contact with the guy who made the standalone windows pandora app, seems it would be much easier to "port" that than an iphone app...which was a terrible suggestion by the way
Skyfire does not work- I have it.
I did email pandora just a couple of weeks ago and they have no plans to support the PPC
Have searched for the ATT install cab but no luck.
I FOUND THIS
i think it already works on some sprint phones as ic on this blod
http://blog.pandora.com/pandora/archives/2007/05/pandora_for_spr.html
There's a Last.FM for Windows Mobile that someone made, it's similar to Pandora. A quick search should turn it up/
Im going to open up pandora and shift though the code, and possibly write an WM6.1 application to intercept and login to their database just like the website.
-This is just an attempt, i will let everyone know the progress as it matures.

awesome! hopefully you will have success! can't wait!
Well it seems after 3 hours of reading code and downloading every external javascript file, and decompiling the flash files, it turns out that Pandora has an API that isnt being released in wide array. And to my dismay, after 3hours, and not knowing enough of the AS language, i chose to wait until the Pandora APIv2 is publicly release (it has been release to a very few 3rd party companies - yahoo is one for example) to revisit pandora for wm.
-sorry, but like i said it was an attempt.

Thanks for trying
At the risk of sounding dumb, here are my half assembled thoughts lacking necessary sleep...
I know Alltel runs BREW, though I'm not sure about Sprint and ATT (not likely). ATT has more than just the iPhone running Pandora, and I'd assume that these phones are all running the program in Java. Otherwise the devs must like doing more work than necessary, or Pandora is trying to find a way to lock this down and make some money.
Is it possible to pull the program off a phone and run it on a WinMo JavaVM?

My thoughts exactly. Does someone have a RAZR, or another supported AT&T phone, who can visit the URL Pandora sends you?
(which is http:///www.pandora.com/att?)
It seems like Pandora might be a java app. If that's he case, it could easily be pulled from the phone's filesystem, once the "right" phone visited the website and downloaded the app. I'd try it myself with my old RAZR, but my wife nagged me when I upgraded and I threw it away.
EDIT: Yeah, I tried it also. It seems like the stock WinMo 6.1. JVM doesn't support some DRM-related features, so the midlet won't run.
I have the Razr V9M (My old phone). I can see if I can get the file(s). Someone needs to walk me thru which files you need and how to get them. If you want to compare files. If anyone is still trying to get this to work...
Pandora on my phone would rock.
Pandora Application on WM6
Did anybody else attempt to put Pandora in a .cab file besides Zeezee? Looking forward to find out if someone can do it for the WM6 and upload it somewhere.

Request: App Market for Touch HD

Heya,
I recently got a Touch HD and love it! However, im finding it difficult to find the applications i want and although i have seen the wiki lists for the suitable applications, im sure more could be done to help this.
So what I wanted to ask was is there any way an app market type software could be made that would include all/most the software out that there (like android, iphone etc...)
I dont mean a big package with all the software, i just mean a source of info and compatibility and clicking a link will start the download.
Is this possible? Cos if so, this would make the Touch HD even more amazing!
Cheers guys for any feedback.
Anyone got any ideas? Is there not anyone out there that can create/develop such a piece of software?
look out for the Microsoft Mobile Marketplace that's coming with the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5
The above, plus you can use the PDM app to download programs (but it's not generic for Blacksotne).
maybe someone can collate all the programs and their links and a description of what it does and if it works. this could be an msi package too?
just surf this forum and that's all
Answer!!
Thank you for your help, however, trawling thru this forum is a long process just to find certain pieces of software.
But, I have found an answer to my own question, if anyone is interested.
A piece of software is in development called "Gecko". Look at
http://www.getgecko.org/
Beta testing has been done and expected date was april, so its delayed but it seems promising for those of us that wont have windows 7 and its application market. (unless sum1 creates a rom of it!)
Yup, Gecko is here for that. Stuff is indeed getting delayed and I'm being pretty quiet about it, but it's still under development.
It's damn sad Microsoft hasn't already cooked this for us!
Why would you keep quiet about it? it sounds like such a gr8 project! I cant wait.
any chance of getting a release date for gecko. please??
No release date set, but I'm starting to look for ways to efficiently share the source code. I won't make it out alone with all the stuff going on right now (positive stuff, of course!)

[Q] WP 7 Rooting or Jailbreaking?

Hey!
So I want to buy the HTC Mozart, but I am not quite sure, because if there is no good community it wont be worth the money. So does anyone know if somebody is working on a root or jailbreak for wp7?
It would make the platform even greater
Thanks in advance!
People are working on it. I'd be surprised if there isn't a jailbreak available in 3 months after it is released.
Ok thanks I am just interested as the beta was already available and the roms have leaked in the htc Mozart category.

"HardSPL" is a bootloader that allows custom Windows ROMs - like flashing to BIOS in your PC to a 3rd party version
Windows doesn't have the concept of a "root or jailbreak" because there is no root account or Jail Shell.

I don't see much of a point in jailbreaking, because there's absolutely squat in regards to API documentation of Iris UIX. No one will be able to write up alternates to the system components.
The only thing that'll make sense right now is unbrand phones, to get carriers out of the loop in regards of updates.

@Tom Servo
I am not sure but isnt it running on a silverlight platform so it would be rather easy to develop different apps?
A large part of the base system, especially UI, is .NET code but uses a different framework called Iris UIX. It's a descendant of the MCE graphics framework, and also used in the Zune desktop software.
Third party applications are forced to use Silverlight instead.
That's also why there's a disconnect between UI features and performance between the first party and third party apps.

Oh ok thanks!
Now thats kinda stupid from them.....
A long time ago, they hired more developers to work on UIX. Seems like they were more occupied porting it to mobile devices than documenting it and prepping it for general release, or something.
I still hope that it'll be made public at some point in time. It seems to be a way better solution than WPF, judging both the phones and the Zune software, even tho the majority of it is still .NET. Maybe a little less flexible, tho. Seems like some teams over at Microsoft went like "**** it, this is overengineered slow crap" and continued to work on MCML, which turned into UIX.
WPF was on the table long before the flashy Zune client ever came to be, which is also mostly .NET. That tells you something.

How about enabling PInvoke, getting the same access to native WinCE APIs OEMs have? Getting access to filesystem, sideloading, tethering, you name it.

Is it in the market yet?
So as you develop such apps i have to ask you:
Do you think the problems you mentioned can be overcome like MS says.
Like in one or two months?
Or would you say that the market will not evolve as much as apple and android?

Microsoft doesnt allow native code for 3rd parties, amd pretty much said they'll keep it that way. I doubt WP7 will support unsafe code for 3rd parties. It's too obvious a workaround...

Hehe...I thought that was the brand name. I need to get out and see the world someday.
Until they can fully multi-task I don't see them being that good. I tried the other one after I seen something about it on Twitter, and I just can't deal with it unless it can multi task and pop up when you need to do something on screen in voice with a Toast-Like notification (think the Zune Controls when the phone is locked).
SilverNavigator shows promise. All it needs is local business search and voice input for searching and I think it would be great.
anyone else find this interesting? somewhere down the line microsoft is going to bring out navigation for bing maps like in 6.5 for free right?
in the meantime private developers can make some money by providing apps that fill in those feature gaps. (don't get me wrong, I'm willing to pay, i need a navigation app asap).
I was just wondering if any of you thought it was microsoft giving those folks a bone or their software is just not prepared at all and they're like oh dang we're too slow everyone else is making apps...

With MS, nothing is sure. I'm of the mind to think they just aren't smart enough to do it. But any number of scenarios could be true. However, from all I've understood of MS, deception is certainly high on the list. MS isn't a consumer oriented company and they don't seem to know how to deal with the public to make them happy. Personally, I believe this ethic will cost them again like it has with Zune and WinMo. I figure stuff like free Bing nav in WinMo 6.5 was a last ditch effort to try to stave off the bleeding. I believe if MS could take your money and give you nothing in return, that is their highest business goal.
I couldn't have imagined that Microsoft would launch WP7 without any GPS app available at launch.
Turn-by-turn is an essential feature on a smartphone.
MS have been working for 2 years on WP7. I thought they would work hand in hand with a major GPS software developer. But no. Nothing.
More than 6 months after launch there is still nothing. Navigon is not available in my country, Google Maps is not available, Tom Tom is not interested in WP7... and I can't stand Bing Maps which is unusuable.

I think that is a little bit of an over-reaction. To my knowledge, the only smartphone with a bult in turn-by-turn app is Android (wich technicaly is a free downloadable app, not built in). The free app for WM6.5 only worked on phones with the correct resolution display (still doesn't work on my Vogue).
Although I don't like Bing as much as I did google maps, it actualy works fairly well.
I think the biggest issue is multi-tasking. How can you run a Turn-by-Turn app, then after answering the phone, the app has to re-load.

Your call. Bing Maps won't be the solution, I strongly doubt that.
LE: I stand corrected, MS is at it, apparently they're looking into it
Microsoft already announced its partnership with Nokia and Ovi maps are okish (something to read here)
As for the Google Maps... needs Android. And for that, ask yourself: do you think it's perfectly ok for someone else to know everything you've done, browsed, phoned, texted, etc? Also to be able to control what apps you install, eventually block or uninstall them remotely without your interaction? Not for me...
Personally I've used both TomTom and iGo, and I prefer the later. Hopefully one of these solutions will be here for WP7. One can dream
Btw, there is a thread here about Navigon on HD2 WP7
Thanks a lot EnderPsp

Microsoft Research Touch Studio

I've recently come across the Touch Studio app and I'm loving everything about it so far. The only thing I haven't been able to find is an English forum with ideas and example codes, yes I know most of the code in Touch Studio is still fairly simple and self-explanatory but it would be nice to see what others are managing with it.
I have come across a Swiss site that has a few nice codes and some other awesome stuff. It would be awesome if we could start something like that here. I've now stopped playing in my spare time (sorry devs) and messing around with Touch Studio. This is just another thing that seperates WP7 from the rest, hope MS keeps up the good work.
For those who have never seen Touch Studio before you can find more info here:
http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/touchstudio/
So is it a good place for someone who hasn't done any code or programming a good place to start? Can you use what you write for the phone it is on or does it still have to go to marketplace before it can be used and you have to download what you wrote from the marketplace to use it yourself? Answered. Do you have to get a dev permit(or whatever it is called) from MS to use the program at all? Answered.
Sorry just listened to podcast 48 on Social Times and the stuff you write is only on the phone, not sharable currently. So just the first question for anyone that have used it.
I have coded a few apps for personal use on my phone, and I would suggest microsoft visual studio for coding apps for WP7. There are great tutorials on the microsoft app hub website for first-time coders. I cant post links, but search microsoft app hub and have a look around that website. Very helpful
Yeah, as you noted the apps you write are only useable on your phone. But the latest version has an option for you to share the code.
I'm not sure how easy it would be for someone with zero experience. I did some very basic programming in Visual Basic 4 ages ago so I have the basic understanding of the simplest commands (e.g. IF THEN WHILE etc.). I don't think it is that hard to understand and should only take an hour or so to fully grasp the concept. There are some excellent tutorials online as well.

Folks, I have been wanting to try out developing some codes ever since I became aware of Touch Studio (a week or so back). Any idea why Touch Studio is NOT downloadable of late? It appears in Zune and you can read the description but no download facility is available. If the information helps - am using HTC Mozart, T-Mobile, based in Germany. Many thanks!
I was able to download it and run it. Using Samsung focus mango beta 7712
@Jason: Thanks Jason; I'll await the official Mango update (no clue when in Germany / T-Mobile); may be it will work out fine automatically thereafter. I got a comment from TouchStudioApp on Facebook: "we are sorry for the inconvenience; please stay tuned for the next update". Have asked them whether it's Mango or the next TouchStudio app they are talking about.
Yeah, I guess they took it offline till Mango, hope they have something exciting in store with the new APIs and such that Mango will bring.
well, i would love to see someone uploading the xap
edit: downloaded touchdevelop
Just recieved an update for TouchStudio it is now called TouchDevelop. Now it is at v2.0. The whole interface has been redesigned, you can now download and post scripts within the app and they have also revamped various other things. Slightly confusing at the moment but will have a look tonight to work the whole thing out.
