LONG POST WARNING
Hello Everyone,
I have been a silent member of the community since the days of the Qtek phones (some of the oldies will know what im talking about). im an amateur web-designer but a Technology Consultant full time.
Now ive moved onto Android (I had a G1 2 Weeks after UK Launch) and ive been a big follower of all the various mods and roms that people have been releasing.
I have been a HERO owner for the last 8 months and it now seems like theres a mass of developers making roms on forums spread all over the web.
I know that a lot of people are loyal to the forums they've been on since god was a boy but currently its such a mess trying to see whats new and whats gone out of date.
SO!!!!
I have a load of webspace and bandwidth so i want to give back to the community and make everyone's life easier.
Im hoping to setup a dedicated forum for HERO Roms, with each rom having its own dedicated category. This will mean that bugs and issues can be posted as "individual topics" making it easier for everyone to find out a solution to their problem. Also it will mean that the developers can see instantly what bugs there and keep track of them.
This is aimed to be as much a help to the DEVs as it is to the users.
Also, if funds and bandwidth allow, this will let DEVs to upload their roms to the sites dedicated FTP space meaning it will be alot easier for people to download.
So ive put up a poll. The question is simple and you have 4 answers, 2 yes and 2 no, depending on if you're a dev or a user.
Ill let the poll run for a few days while i prepare a demo forum for testing.
If this all goes well then i will set up similar forums for all android based phones making the android developing world the best there could be.
If anyone has any experience which could be useful such as graphics, phpbb admin, or even hosting space pm me and we will see if we can collaborate to make this thing a success.

Sounds good — right now, each ROM just has one big impossible to navigate megathread. A section for topics/questions on each individual ROM would be invaluable.
Also forgot to add
Developers will have a dedicated "Lounge" to share/collaborate on fixing common issues. this will be hidden from normal users and will allow DEVs to work together a lot easier
There are non-dev's on here though that can have some very good ideas in fixing things..... you don't really want to alienate them
it is a no from me - XDA-DEVELOPERS is where we get our fix.....

A very good point, ill work out a way this can also be implemented.
Anyone can become a developer by request but it will be closely monitored. By setting up a dedicated section it will allow devs to discuss things without being plagued by people saying they're having the same problem or haven't read the instructions properly etc.
TBH, I think that devs will still tend to migrate away from here, or really any forum where they are stuck in a 'box' as part of a bigger 'box'.
I've been setting up an off-site forum for a ROM, and there are certainly advantages to having admin/mod rights that you don't get on shared forums.
One example was that recently a dev I work with went away, and Apps2SD wasn't working on their ROM. I made a hotfix, as per our agreement before he went away, but I had to end up adding the link to my sig in red and hoping people read it... Anyway, if we'd wanted to get it into the first post, we'd have had to PM a mod and waited an age for someone to sort it out.
With admin and mod rights, a small group of us will be able to edit each others' posts and this sort of thing shouldn't happen.
On a very positive note, I've noticed that the level of support from people with servers has been brilliant. There are now 2 mirrors for this ROM's stuff, and we have plenty of space (tens of gigabytes) to host ROMs and files for people. This generosity is really appreciated, but I don't think (IMHO) devs will move from here to another 'shared' forum... The flexibility of having your own site with bugtracker software and MediaWiki is too alluring...
There are also plenty of interesting other things that can be done on a server where there's only one real ROM on it, which would not be possible, or fair on the host, if you had loads of ROMs on the site... (think about CPU and disk usage if you do any interesting scripting )
Hell, I've even got ssh access to one of the servers now, so I can use rsync to upload files via diffs, saving bandwidth. But that wouldn't really be feasible for lots of people, and loading could become an issue if a couple of DEVs released a rom at the same time (think impending 2.1 release and the number of d/ls you'll get an hour after that )
But, I'm gonna vote no, and those are my (personal opinion) reasons. But if you go ahead, I wish you good luck, and feel free to PM me if you need help working with phpBB or other stuff like that (I've done it for a while)...

Well, a read-only forum would sort this, where non-devs can read, but not post. But then it's not a devs forum...
(sorry for double post, but it's on a different sort-of topic)

Lenny, am about to PM you with account details for what I've whipped up on the new villain mirror (forum etc.) Change default password obviously
@topic, TBH, I think load on this server could be immense. That's my main reason for no (since last post was very long, and I really think I should summarise).
I do like the idea - will it turn into ads city though?????
anon, your work on the villain rom is what inspired me to do this.
The villain thread is now almost 750 pages long and i can no longer follow it all as theres just too much to catch up on if ive been away for a couple of days.
A dedicated forum per rom is very possible but... it would mean that users would have to register at lots of different forums if they wanted to try things out.
ill pm you a link to the kind of thing im aiming for. At least having your input means we can make it even better.

No, it wont. Im sure the community will be supportive enough to make sure that dosnt happen.
Just a quick note to everyone. if the majority of developers say no then this wont be going ahead. without the developers there will be no use in the forum.
If anyone wants any points to be clarified or any suggestions please just post it here.
Even without dev support, i still think there would be much value in having a system in which users of a specific ROM can talk to each other. And talk in a structured, easy to navigate way. (i.e. not having everything in one megathread).
So if I wanted to ask a question about a certain ROM I'm using, other users of that ROM would be lurking in that section of the forum, and they could answer my question.
tl;dr it'd be good regardless of dev support
Discard all the "wannabe chef" threads, follow only the ones you have an interest in, and there you go. That would have saved you ~90% of the hassle.

not exactly sure what youre referring to but if its about the list of roms then thats what i do, just follow the ones i want... BUT
the threads are very disorganised and the villain rom is now almost 750 pages long....
There is no way to easily look back and see what the bugs are other than looking back over the last 50-60 pages - search dosnt work properly because you could have the same issue mentioned hundreds of times in diffrent contexts.
And its not fair to make all the DEVs update their first post eveytime someone says something isnt working.
A wiki would be ideal for this...
Just my 2c
I stand by my earlier comment on this issue.
We need to stop fragmenting the Hero ROM community rather than fragment it more.
Incase nobody noticed, the Hero ROM community is ALOT smaller than the Dream/Magic community is.
In part because we have to deal with closed-source Sense.
But this doesn't mean that we should move to other forums just because you can't have admin powers here.
Maybe it's a better idea to ask the admins if they can possibly install a modification into vBulletin (the software this forum runs on) so that 1 thread can have multiple authors.
I'm sure there is one around.
Meaning that the person that creates a rom can assign people that can edit the first post.
This solves all the problems you have without fragmenting the community (further).
Or am I wrong?
If you want your own forum just so you can have "power" over the other users then I can garantuee you that the chances of it going well are slim.
Lets work together.
We have 4.01.2011 and I see no evidence nor progress nor real infos nor start...
Lets make some rules for this Thread.
1.
We want facts NO fiction. For discuss and dreaming use this Thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894990
2.
What should be post here:
- infos of progress... Example.
""Today I was able to boot Android instead bada on my S8500""
Minimum post then Pictures here or Video on youtube for instance as evidence
Perfect would be. Alpha/Beta status stuff for trying self... if possible for ALL users.
Best Regards

I think the only way we are going to see and android port is if we start a bounty for the first person to do it, i mean other wise its not worth the monstrous effort it will take.
im agree with you!
Example what I mean... progress and description...
Here S8000:

Now we should do this for S8500 too.

i want android on my wave 8530,very plz
Nah, I have android on Archos 101 - it sucks. I didn't find anything interesting for me in Android and it seems that bada is more stable than google's piece of linux.
bada is not bad, I thinks it's quite good. Ok, there aren't so much apps than for Android or Symbian - but they will come with the time.
bla bla bla , again new/old boring conversation about nothing
I cant find the site!
Some months ago i found a community site calle WaweDroid, there were trying a port, and of course i dreamed to buy and high end device for cheap and using my favorite os like with htc hd2, but now i cant even find the site anymore and there are no updetas about that.
Do someone any idea/news of that?
hello now wavedroid project is hosted in androidport.net

While I do believe that serious people are working on the project (& keeping my fingers crossed too!), the site's owner fails to provide regular updates about anything happening. Actually there is no news on any progress on the site.
I am a member too but I need regular updates about any progress on the port.
Its because the site owner has done nothing but come across as a tool. They should appoint a developer to be in charge of keeping the community in the know
i think the same, and im not agree for asking money for nothing.
im quite dissapointed with the administrators.
i hope that they will stop to asking money or i will resign as moderator there
they have listened to mea nd it seems they will act with common sense...
Sounds like the more serious members on the wavedroid team are making progress.

Information:
It's half a month since I first post on Neopeek that I managed to boot Android Linux kernel on raph800 from NAND. Although after that I had solved some of the basic and important bugs, I'm now really making progress slow.
Some people have made great suggestion that me making all the source open, and I decide to follow it. So here is it.
Plan to support: raph800,raph100.
Likely to be supported: diam types, other raph types.
Whether a phone type is supported depends on the test mechine used by our project members. That is , if you have a phone other than raph800 or raph100 but joined the develop team, then we are happy to add your device to the support list.
Sorry to say that it's nearly impossible to use git over my Internet connection, so I have to host the project on Google, using a svn repository.
Notice:
I'm not a professional Linux kernel developer and it's my first time to participate in a open source project(not to say that I'm even the creator…Orz), so if I make something wrong or inproperly please do feel free to point that out and I'll correct it.
Please none developers don't bother in this…

Exact same as haret/SD card builds, probably worse. Lots of optimization needs to happen for NAND, on RHOD battery life is way worse presently. Just because it's being flashed onto the phone doesn't mean the work is done...

Well, I had to backtrace you over to neopeek's forum to understand this post, with absolutely no explanation.
Folks, he downloaded the source from jamesallen426's google code site and put it in a 7z file...
It doesn't appear ready to test dude, I really hope you asked jamesallen426 for permission to do this... I would assume if he was ready to test it, he would announce a release and post it...
Oh com'on, he was just thinking of a good way to rid the world of the d-pad devil device (triple-d)
I honestly didn't think it was exactly ready for "prime time" but I was considering flashing when I had the time...

exactly. as I wrote "i downloaded complete source from google code" I don't write that it is flash ready, and write that maybe someone can make nbh from this source if he have time and required knowledge. If you want to play with this, here now you have source in one file, you don't need to install additional applications to download source from google code. If we want to push this project forward we need original files to play with them, test something and send to jamesallen426 new files.
Helo. Can anyone tell me what device is Raphael 800? Is it regular HTC Touch Pro GSM version or? Will this work on this device? Tnx.

I believe RAPH800 is GSM (I could be wrong) but the idea is, we need others to test this that have no problem with their device ending up as a paper weight. As mentioned earlier: by trying this, no one is liable for you destroying your device. Just need testers who know what they are doing and are willing to accept this.

RAPH800 is CDMA (Sprint and others). The RAPH100 and 110 are GSM.
I have an HTC fuze here I will give to a developer for testing purposes. Contact me, and I will arrange to send it to you. US-based preferred, just for the shipping convenience.
Thanks.

Guys, what is the purpose statement of XDA Developers? I am asking that because I figure that the purpose should be within the lines of providing end users most enjoyable smart phone, technology, gadget experience, keeping the users up-to-date about news and developments in the same arena, etc etc...
I am a Sony Xperia user and, sadly, due to the fact that we live in the United States, we are banned from using some of this end product. This product is Cyanogenmod, that is being developed by an "FXP" team that purposely chose a media sharing website that blocks IPs from the US. I did nothing to be a part of this political debacle but I can't enjoy Cyanogenmod anymore. We are also banned from mirroring this end product, is this something XDA or CM would approve?
Some of you might see me as moaning about the issue but I don't know where to go, how to ask for help because I should not be banned from using Cyanogenmod just because some development team has a political agenda. I would like to hear opinions and advice ...
As I recall, the ONLY rule of CyanogenMod is Don't ask for ETA's, not "don't ask for working download links", not "don't mirror files". We should not be forced to download through any other means than a working link. we should not have to download 3rd party software that we do not want in order to use the product.
What is the official tie between CM and FXP? Right now I am not able to use CM due to FXP, what does CM have to say about it? Do they know that FXP is banning the US users? (Technically, FXP is banning US users by uploading the product on a website that bans US IPs)
That may just be a team producing a version of the CM rom. Have you checked the CM site and see if a version of the rom is there?
If a dev requests that no mirrors should be posted, then they're within their rights to do so, as far as XDA is concerned.
As far as CM is concerned, I have no idea.

No-one's stopping you from getting ahold of the source code compiling it yourself.
But even if you did, the only reason CyanogenMod ROMs are a reality for the 2011 Xperia range is because of the work of the FreeXperia team, so you'd still owe them thanks.

I haven't yet, I browsed around CM forums for different things before, but I will register there and try to find out. From what I understand at the Xperia arc forums, FXP is the team that does serve Xperia series phones with CM work. There are of course different devs that use the CM or Sony ROMs as a base for their own work, but FXP is the one that ports the CM for Xperias, I could be wrong, I will find out.

So technically it would be against XDA rules to post a mirror? I just don't want to cross the line with XDA, and frankly I don't give a hoot what FXP thinks. I have seen so many users just complaining and complaining about not being able to download. I can grab the ROMs whatnot from friends overseas, but I also want to help those who can't. So I would assume a private mirror should not be a violation of XDA rules.

I am not trying to start a debate here or I am trying to be a smartass. I know very well that FXP's work is not the only one I can use with my phones. If I could compile a ROM myself, then I would not have started this thread, so your point is moot. I am just concerned about a ton of users being blocked from using Cyanogenmod, something that doesn't belong to FXP if I understood correctly, for what reason? And I am basically trying to find out how to get around this nonsensical limitation imposed on us without bugging XDA. Anyone would agree that a smart phone user would need XDA in general more than any specific dev team.
If a Dev says not to mirror their work and you do then you will be breaking XDA rules.

In the future, it would be advisable to use more diplomatic language then.
Accusing FXP of stopping you from using CM when they're the only reason it exists doesn't give the best impression.

The fact that certain download sites are blocked by the US government is hardly the fault of FXP nor is it a matter that XDA have any control over.
If you want to complain to someone, contact your Senator or Congressperson.
Anyway, this entire thread is now moot as FXP have kindly taken the time to respond to this matter already:

I tried that one and many other proxies as well. I can go all the way to the start link but then ul.to says all servers busy, register for premium... My friend overseas doesn't have this problem.
I jumped in when Shabby's host cut him off after cmupdater appears to have gone crazy and ate up a ton of bandwidth. But overall I was planning on being out of hosting for developers by the end of the year so its rather temporary. There were a couple other offers brought up at the time so those might still be on the table.
I offered to take the 10 bucks someone donated and chip in and get him a domain and 1 year of hosting over at that horrible company 1&1 but it was doing the job before and it will suffice again.
Phantom is busy working on something and isn't giving me any clues so I dunno what to do. Jan 1st I need to redirect cmupdater requests to another server, question is where. Projected usage this month is 3 TB, pretty low demand with an average of about 60 GB a day at the moment.

Well whatever is used needs to have ftp uploading and the abillity for a program to directly access a file with no website, waiting or anything inbetween as cmupdater reads directly from a file on the server. Now Chris said something about people using goo.im for cmupdater but unless someone wants to explain that I cant say hey go use this or that see ya. Needs to work out of the box with no fiddling for the most part.

Dev Host will have a limit of 20GB of file storage. AFH won't.
I'm checking on that now but may have to wait until I get home.

Once again with these hosts can you direct link to a file? cmupdater is going to point to whatever.whatever.com/whatever/api and if the file is not delivered right away then it will not work. Put it to you this way whatever I turn him over to has to work. 1/1/2013 I am going to redirect the links there and if it doesnt work, CM10 nightlies = bye bye until someone figures it out. Any real host works fine, anything that works like a file sharing site might not I cant just shove this into a corner and say sorry about your luck.
I contacted one guy who had a dedicated server as well before see what he says. Shabby is still combating high usage after the fact and well maybe I shouldnt have gotten back in only to have to say bye at the end of the year.
I'm sure folks appreciate you jumping in, if only for a temporary fix. This at least gives a little time to get it figured out.

I was going to carry on a bit longer just for Phantom but the current and predicted load mean increased operating costs in the future and I just don't have it in me. So I had to make the decision to help him on to the next spot. I wish I could carry on.
Don't worry all current builds (11/26 and up) I can redirect to the new server so none of the builds that can see updates now will be left in the dark.
I have used Dreamhost in the past. No complaints for the price but we didn't have much traffic. Very easy to get up and running.

Yeah but unless someone has a dreamhost account to donate. Its a matter of there is no money coming out of his pocket. I don't want to start an account on something and have to deal with closing it out after a year to everyone's disappointment.
Sent inquiry to AFH admin... will let you guys know what the result is.

Will be glad to try and set something up with you. Will email you shortly
Currently have 7 Servers in 5 States with a combined bandwidth of over 800TB of BW allocated each month Sure I can fit ya in somewhere
I sent you a PM RepinSpor. Assuming this will work for you as well I will pass along the small donation that was given to me by one of his supporters. Hopefully the hosting will draw you in a little more support as well.
I'm good irl friends with the devhost owners. I'll see what I can do...

Recieved thanks. Sorry for the delays in responding. Work is a bit hectic today. I will gladly work with you and the others to insure you updater works on our servers and can shoot out the nightlies to everyone
In addition to AFH i also host nightlies and other sites for developers so this shouldn't be a problem
Alright thanks man and no rush. Have a couple weeks before the end of the year
