Upgraded from Xda II to Xda IIs end January and initially WLAN worked fine, but no GPRS. Went though process of creating GPRS connection (with O2 Support) and now cannot get IE to connect through WLAN. It always tries GPRS! Has anyone experienced this and/or got a solution?

You will need to give us some more info on your settings.
If its an O2 unit with original firmwware if you back stuff up try a hard reset to get default settings back and ensure GPRS works then add the WLAN.
I live in Caldecote just outside Cambridge if you get really stuck we could meet up and you can try and copy my settings and check your SIM has GPRS enabled using mine that kind of thing.

you might already know this mike and if so at least it may be of help to others.
if your gprs connection is active then it doesn't matter wheather the wireless lan is on or off, internet explorer will always connect to gprs.
switch off gprs by clickiing on (in my case O2) your service providers icon and if "mobile web" is highlighted then click on it to switch it off.
Thanks, but I'd tried that and more. Eventually, as Wayne suggested, I did the dreaded hard reset and restored everything from scratch. I now have WLan working on my home LAN, but as I have such lousy GSM/GPRS coverage here I haven't yet tried to see if the GPRS side is now going to work. That's for tomorrow and where I started in the first place when I found it wasn't working! :?

I had the same problem, and after thorough search I found the solution:
start->settings->connections -> advanced
select networks : both drop-down boxes are set to
"my work network"
This prevents the automatic gprs connections.
If you want gprs you can use the wireless manager
(start->programs->wireless manager)
and there tap the red gprs icon
In other words RTFM....

Firstly, awesome forum! Although I don't post here, this forum has helped me numerous times. This is the first time i could not solve a problem and therefore had to post about. So a big fat thanks to all you guys!
I notice when my email is being updated or my contacts facebook updates, sometimes (most times actually) it connects via Edge even though I'm at home with wifi. Some programs and also browsing uses Edge over wifi at times. Is there any way to make it choose wifi over Edge, if its available, ALL the time?

If you are connected to a wifi network it should always use that over MediaNet. Mine does, at least. If you'll just leave the wifi in the on position in the Comm Manager and have it config'd for your home network it should automatically connect whenever you are at home.

Man, if I turn on my WiFi radio continuously, the battery heads for zero in a hurry! I keep mine off unless I know I'm in range of a network I can use.
Is there any way to prevent your data connection from being lost when a secured Wifi network is within range. I don't understand why the phone gives a secured wifi network preference over your carriers network... effectively preventing any data connection until you turn off wifi.
Just one example of this annoying problem came when I was navigating to a job location and a road was closed. GPS could not reroute me because I was in a residential neighborhood picking up lots of wifi networks. All the them were secured. So... in order to reroute I had to toggle off my wifi so that my phone would go back to connecting through my carrier.
Why do phones do this? Until your device obtains an IP address from the wifi hotspot it should not bypass the carriers data connection. Is there any way around this that doesn't require constantly turning wifi on and off?

Never had this problem.... My GS3 has always ignored secured and unsecured wifi networks unless I specifically request to connect to them. The only thing I can think is that its trying to connect to the same SSID that you're using at home like "netgear" or something. If that's the case, shame on you for not changing your default SSID at home.
If not, what setup are you on? Stock/rom/kernel etc.
My SSID does not match anything out there. It happens all the time. When I go to my kids favorite park my phone tries to connect to a cablevison hotspot. When I open an app like Facebook or tapatalk it just hangs. If I open a web browser I get redirected to one of those sign in pages. As soon as I turn off wifi I go back to 4G and browse as normal.
This happens on every phone I've ever owned including my wife's phone, parents phones and brothers phone. I just figured it was something everyone dealt with.... Was hoping for a work around.

I would like to invite everyone to try if they have the same problem
For me, I have done a lot of testing, and I have found that, with any open WiFi hotspot (ones doesn't require wifi password to connect, with captive login or not), even G4 saved the network, half times it won't autoconnect.
When you go into wifi setting, the network is there, and there is an message below the nextwork saying:
"internet is unavailable, cannot autoconnect"
But if you tab it manually, it will connect and fine. I tested it with multiple hotspots and all have the same problem. I tried all different ways like delete the networks and re-add, nothing works.
Any of you have same problem please confirm below and let us know if you have found a solution, this is yet another ridiculous problem LG4 has and not fixing it, who are they to decide internet is available or not on a wifi hotspot?

Is this issue only for Hotspots? Or any Wifi device? I ask, because I don't see a problem with my WiFi router at home.

For me it is only for open Wi-FI (no password required to connect), the tend to be public hotspots.

That underlined bit is interesting.
so it seems this only occurs with open networks ie ones that don't require a userid/pass.
otherwise you have no problems connecting when there required login is required and is saved already.
eg. your home wifi ?
some more reading led me to this post.
My G4 doesn't have any problem with the open network at my work. It connects automatically as soon as I drive in the parking lot, if I leave and come back, as soon as I'm in range it re-connects just fine.

You shouldn't want your phone/laptop connecting to any OPEN network automatically that you haven't vetted. This is how scammers skim passwords, etc., by offering 'free' wifi hotspots in busy areas.

Not quite, it happens on open networks that I have connected to before i.e. saved and as you put it vetted.
Connecting to saved networks that are passkey protected works fine.
Yes that's right, for me the network that requires password has no problem to auto connect
And the post you linked for refresh DHCP, I tested and it doesn't solve the problem

To clarify, my situation is for open wifi where the provider redirects you to a webpage where you click "ok" or "accept" to proceed.
The first time I connect, it's fine. But, when my phone tries to auto-connect the next day, it gives the error described. So, I have to manually open up wifi connections, view the list, select the wifi name, and connect.
So it works fine after some manual intervention, but there is a bug I think in how the G4 handles these types of open wifi connections, once they are saved in the phone's history and you try to connect again later. So there is a problem here, but it's somewhat nuanced and easy to miss.

The problem you are referring to is having android auto connect to random networks, which of course should not happen.
Also G4 currently does not connect to open wifi that doesnt require login either. Even it clear have good internet connection, it wont reconnect, which is clearly a bug

see this is where it gets tricky, that post was referring to networks set up by a telco around the city. the ssid is the same its not a random network. This is exactly what you want.
you accepted it when you were in location a, now you are at location b and want to connect. so it should connect automatically ie no different than if you were to return back to location a.
You said home wifi works, so leaving wifi on, walk out of range and then come back in range and it connects automatically. And you expect the same behaviour with an open wifi that you accepted prior.
Way i understood it is that guy is complaining about what you want with open wifi

I went back to re-read the post you pointed out. OP of the thread wants to block all the open wifi hotspots with paywall. It is not because he/she used one paywall network work in location A and doesn't want to use it again in location B. OP never used the paywall network (because it charges) and doesn't want to ever connect to it again, in that case, delete it from the saved network list should solve the problem.
In fact, Op also wants to use non-paywall open wifi, which is same as what I want here with G4. We both have the same need, which is auto re-connect to known, used, and trusted network. Here is exactly G4 cannot do and clearly having a problem. As I said before, even for network that is open, no paywall, and no log in required, G4 simply cannot auto connect, and claim "internet is unavailable", which is false and need to be fixed. Furthermore, even if there is a captive login, G4 should not refuse to auto connect before informing user so. While LG clearly has no problem sending tons of notification for their bloated LG smart notices, right now there is no single notice about WiFi auto connect failure, you will only discover the problem after you open WiFI set up page.

My phone is always connecting to WiFi connections automatically (as they come in range).
I don't want it to. I only want it to automatically connect to the ones which I specify (my home, my office...).
How can I configure to only connect to the networks which I specify?

you know, i don't have that behavior, my phone only connects to networks it remembered.
In the list of available wifi networks the remembered ones are at the bottom. If I hold down and select 'forget network' then they go away.

My list of available wifi shows maybe about 100 or more entries. How can I delete them all?
I have Cricket wireless service. I had initially installed a cricket app for managing wifi and I believe it may have added all of those wifi connections. I wonder if this has somehow messed up my phone. I have since deleted the app, but the problem still persists. :crying:

That clearly is not a realistic option as it would take me a very long time to delete that list. I also don't believe that it will fix the problem. Every time I pass a WiFi network it will just get added to the list again.
Just the other day, I was sitting on a bus and we were driving alongside another bus which offered WiFi to its passengers. My phone automatically tried connecting to the other bus's WiFi.
Does anyone know how to configure this, so that I only automatically connect to the WiFi networks that I specify? This is making using my phone with this version of Cyanogenmod very frustrating.
