[Q] Unable to enter ClockworkMod recovery - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have recently rooted my Desire using the GoldCard/Tiny Core Linux CD method and then I installed ROM Manager.
I have used the ROM Manager to flash the ClockworkMod recovery and I can enter the Clockworkmod recovery by using the 'Reboot into recovery' button inside ROM Manager.
However, before trying any new ROMs out I want to make sure I can get into ClockworkMod recovery outside of the ROM Manager but I can't!
When I turn my phone on whilst pressing VolDown I get to the original HTC HBOOT screen. If I then go and select the 'RECOVERY' option I end up at a 'red exclamation mark inside triangle' screen.
Can anyone help me work out what is wrong, please?
TIA

Once you are in the black screen with the red triangle and exclamation mark you have to push volume up and power. Then you should get a blue menu that the second line says something like "flash update.zip". You push volume down to select it and power.
Now you should be loading Clockwork Mod Recovery.

you have not really "flashed" clockwork as a permanent recovery
press vol up + power when at the red triangle screen
then in the standard recovery, choose the option to flash update.zip
[edit] too slow

If you press power and vol up when on the red exclamation mark screen, it should give you a menu.
Press flash update.zip and clockworkmod should load.

Can you not use unrevoked to make it perminant?
Thats what I did when I rooted on Wednesday
Or can only certain phones do this?

Thanks for all the quick replies!
I have got it now - I didn't realise that I wasn't set up for the ClockworkMod recovery permanently.
When I get to the blue menu I also see a message:
"E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command"
Should I be concerned?

Sorry, but was that a 'no' to Lennyuk, post#5 or me, post#6?

sorry, that was a reply to your question, there's no need to be concerned
also @ lenny, yes the desire can flash a permanent recovery (amonra or clockwork) with unrevoked
i have amon ra flashed to the phone, but i can still use clockwork if needed by flashing the update.zip i keep in the root of my sdcard or using rom manager

Thanks, appreciated.

brrillliant post brother........really sorted my problem out........thanks a lot..mmwwaaaahhh....reaaalllly i thought i bricked it but ur a gem...

Hello everyone.
I am very sorry to rise this topic but I have a problem.
My Desire HD is rooted via VisioNARY, I have ROM Manager and latest Clockwork Mod
The problem is I cannot enter the Clockwork mod. The phone stops on a red triangle and an exclamation mark, I press volume up and power, bring up the menu, select update.zip and it says invalid operation and the phone restarts.
Please help.
Thanks
EDIT:
Solved with S-off.
CWM Recovery works fine now.

When trying to load the update.zip it aborts during the verification process saying: "signature verification failed. Installation aborted." (htc aria, s-off, rooted)

[SOLVED] Can't access Custor Recovery Image from HBOOT

I'm having a issue where I can't access ClockworkMod Recovery (or any other recovery, to be fair) when booting in HBOOT and selecting Recovery.
If I boot throught ROM Manager, I can go into CM like everybody else. If I try to go manually, I end up in the stock Recovery with exclamation mark.
The thing is that I made a tutorial to install CM in Desire and shared with some friends and all of them, following the same steps I made, can go into CM just by selecting Recovery in HBOOT.
Installed thru Unrevoked succefully but got the same issue.
I've tried to flash CM again thru ROM Manager several times with no luck. I can only go to CM if I use the option in ROM Manager.
I've searched a lot but I don't think I'm finding the correct key words.
Anyone has any ideas?
This is important because if I have problems with flashing some ROM and can't get into Android and ROM Manager, I won't be able to do anything without a PC.
I'm using Official SenseFroyo 1.0c from Open Desire.

You will have to flash a RUU Rom to restore recovery
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
You have forgotten one simple step.
When you choose recovery and get the red exclamation mark with a triangle, as described, you then need to press the volume down key and power at the same time. You will then have a blue text menu, choose apply update.zip to load CW recovery ( assuming you have CW recovery stored on your SD card root folder, renamed to update.zip )

Do you mean flash a RUU Rom and then flash a Custom Recovery back thru ROM Manager?
If so, is there any explanation why out of about 5 Desires rooted and with custom recovery flashed the same way, only 1 can't go into CM Recovery strait from HBOOT?
I'll try that as a last resource... If I can avoid flashing a 2.1 ROM and then a Froyo ROM back this would be nice.
Anyway, thanks for the quick help.

Sorry guys, you were right.
It turns out that dispite having using Unrevoked until it said "done", I though it would install CW directly...
Anyway, I just had to push VolUp + Power properly and managed to go into stock recovery and then flash CW.
Thanks atomfix and gekkonz for your help. I would never figure this out myself...
And that ROM Manager thing pointing out I had CW installed is really misleading, by the way...
Doh, yes vol up not vol down

[Q] Boot into recovery without Vol(+) button?

I got my phone a bit damp while skiing and now the + vol button doesn't work. I would like to keep playing around with Roms however the inability to flash an update.zip to boot into clockwork mod worries me too much.
Is there anyway to get into the standard recovery without holding the + and pushing power? Or possibly hard-flash clockwork mod?
Gas
---Solved, flashed recovery using unREVoked, works well now. Thanks everyone, back continuous unadulterated flashing---
Well, ROM manager can boot into recovery, but obviously that requires a working ROM.
Regards,
Dave
Install ROM Manager from the Marketplace, use the custom clockwork recovery image in my sig (fake flash). You can then install the custom recovery image from the root of your sd card using ROM Manager. To flash ROMs in the future, in ROM Manager, select the 'Install ROM from sd card option'. You can then use the trackpad to navigate through the recovery menu options instead of the Vol key.

Yeah I know I can get there from Clockworkmod, but the rom needs to be working. I'm worried about flashing anything else in case one of the roms is broken.
I've read that unrevoked rooted phones can do it, can I use the unrevoked method even though I'm already rooted with Paul's riskfree?
If you turn on your phone while pressing the "Back"button on the right of the (OJ)optical joystick, your phone boots in "Fastboot"
Then you select "Bootloader" by pressing the powerbutton
If one of your vol buttons still works, you can press it untill you've selected recovery
Et Voila

Use UnrEVOked to permanently flash a recovery image onto your phone.
Regards,
Dave
From terminal
su
reboot recovery
Also works
Where to from here?
I have been reading up on fastboot, in which I should be able to restore a nandroid backup if flashing a rom fails. This doesn't need the recovery console, there is some contingency I guess.
Has anyone used unrevoked on a prerooted device? are the steps the same?
Gas
For instructions for flashing a permanent recovery image (UnrEVOked) are pretty straightforward. Please see the following link for more information:
http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709146
Just make sure you have HTC Sync uninstalled beforehand. To remove UnrEVOked, simply flash your original RUU file, which will also return you to stock and remove root.

[Q] How do I start my Desire hd in recovery mode?

Happy New Year everyone!
As the title says, I'd like to start my phone in recovery mode so I can flash a new ROM on it...being a total noob here, I have no clue on how to do that...any help available please?
Thanks so much
If you have all the pre-requisites (root, s-off and/or radio s-off, clockworkmod recovery installed), you go to recovery either by
a) Enter the ROM Manager app and click "Reboot to Recovery"
b) Reboot the phone while holding the "volume down" button, this will take you to your bootloader. Scroll to highlight "RECOVERY" (with volume buttons) and press the power button to select it.
That's it

Thanks tmh, it looks like I have to "have all the pre-requisites" first then...now how to I do all that...is there any "how to" guide for that?
Quite a few guides if you head on into the Desire HD Android Development forum. There are guides for for rooting, installing eng hboot, radio s-off, custom recovery etc. there. And a nice "glossary" as well, if things like s-off and stuff is jibberish to you, as it was to me when I got my DHD (came from a Hero)
Do note though, that if you updated your DHD with the latest OTA update (firmware 1.72.something), you CAN NOT root it yet, and therefor not install any of the other pre-requisites for installing custom ROM's.
uhmm...I just got it yesterday so I haven't touched any of that stuff yet I guess I need to find out what exactly am I running now and then take it from there...but first of all I have to figre out what "root" means...lol
thanks so much for the quick answers
Then I suggest you start out by reading this thread then, as it explains most of the terms you'll encounter on your way to installing a custom ROM
Don't accept any ota updates either. Otherwise you will become just another user who can't get root.

Ah darn, I got it now: I have to press vol. up and power and I get the menu.
However, I have an error message:
E:Can't open cache/recovery/command
Also, the image (filename: r2-update-modacocustomrom-ace-sense-signed.ZIP) does not appear in the list, only an update.zip. So what do I do?
Thanks again...
PS I wiped the cache folder, made sure its empty through ES Explorer, but the same problem persists....

You can't be on Clockworkmod 2.5.1.3 because the red triange is the stock recovery!
Are you 100% sure you have permanent root and either radio s-off or eng hboot s-off?
If you only have root, and not some form of s-off then rom manager will report you have flashed CWM correctly but the stock recovery will be restored when you reboot.

Thanks - that was an eye opener! Rom Manager reported that current recovery was the one stated, even after reboot, so I assumed all was correct.
I had used Easy Radio Tool 2.2 a couple of times, choosing the first option (Radio S-OFF, Super-CID and SimUnlock (usual)), and it reported success. Then I tried only doing Radio S-OFF and it worked first time around...
Thanks for your input!
krakout I had the same problem as you. I rooted my DHD installed Rom Manager then install Clockworkmod. Next I tried to back up my rom and got an phone with a triangle sign.
Then I went into the recover menu and it was the stock one not Clockworkmod. I solved this issue by flashing Clockworkmod again after using Easy Radio Tool 2.2 and choosing the first option (Radio S-OFF, Super-CID and SimUnlock (usual))

[Q] CM7 stable won't install

I am currently running CM7.0.0-RC2-Slide, and I saw that there was a stable CM7 available, but after following cyanogen's instructions on installing, and after rebooting the phone, I come to a black screen with an image of a phone and a red triangle with a ! in the middle, on the top right of the image.
My technology savvy roommate said I need to flash the newest clockwork recovery with ADB, but i just can't figure anything out.
I just want the new CM7 on my phone and be happy already. I'm half tempted to just revert back to stock and upgrade to 2.2.
Can anyone please help shed some light on my dilemma?
-ET
The red triangle screen is the stock recovery. The instruction at the cyanogen wiki says:
15. Once in the recovery, you will see a device with a triangle. Press Volume Up & the Power button.
16. Use the Volume Down button to highlight Apply update.zip & press the Power button to select this.
17. After a moment, the TMobile myTouch Slide will boot into the ClockworkMod Recovery.
Click to collapse
The update.zip in this case is the ClockworkMod recovery. The link to that file is in the wiki. Once you are in ClockworkMod Recovery you can proceed to wipe and install the update-cm-7.0.0-Slide-signed.zip
P.S: BTW you can't flash a permanent CWM Recovery on this device without being S-OFF. That's why for S-ON devices you always have to get into CWM Recovery from the Stock Recovery.

Sounds like you probably aren't rooted but you also should try using unrevoked 3.22 rather than 3.32. Below is a section from a guide I posted for rooting your inc.(that is if you were unable to flash recovery.img) hope it helps
nschiwy said:
Step 2: Flash Clockwork Recovery to your phone
You now need to download a few more files and place them somewhere that will be easy to find.
Unrevoked 3.22 from Mediafire – NOTE: if this link ever becomes broken, you must use version 3.22, 3.32 will NOT work.
Clockwork 5.0.2.0 from PvilleComp.com – make sure you use clockwork 5.0.2.0 with md5: e8ac35ddc1c37000bb0852d1f380b5bb
Next, run unrevoked 3.22, as an administrator if you can. And click file>Custom Recovery… and select the .img file which is inside the Clockwork 5.0.2.0 .zip that you downloaded, you may need to extract the folder first.
Next you can plug in your phone and select charge only and then go to Settings>Applications>development> and enable debugging.
Unrevoked should now recognize your phone and bring up a warning dialogue. Click ok and Unrevoked will run and flash Clockwork 5.0.2.0 to your phone. Do not touch your phone until you see a terminal-like screen on your phone in all blue text on a black background.
you can navigate clockwork using the scroll button at the bottom of your droid incredible to navigate and center-click for “enter”.

Hi guys,

Which is the working version of CWM? Thanks so much in advance!

Double check that's your version of CWM, which should work. Your symptoms are standard for an older version of CWM on a SLCD screen. To be safe, go into ROM Manager, advanced options, and check erase recovery. Then reflash CWM 5.0.2.0.
Thanks for the suggestion..it didn't work. I flashed older CWMs and AmonRa but I still get the black screen with CWM logo. Thinking of:
- Fastboot erase recovery
- push recovery image
- then reflash CWM through ROM Manager?
Thoughts? Thanks again for the help!
K
Wait, black screen with CWM logo? That means you're in it, but pressed the power button at the main menu. Try pressing the power button once to get out of that when you see the logo.
Yeah..It seems like I can't select the options in the menu though I can toggle through. Its weird...even flashing the other cwm versions does the same thing.
SOLVED: Didn't realize you were supposed to use the trackpad to select..I kept pressing power...(that's how it is done on MoPho). Thanks for your help!
