Have been having issues with *.wav files as alerts and I think they are 'normally' *.wma files so thought I would give it a go.

Thanks, will have a look at that.

I use Format Factory. It's free and good.

Tried, converted but then for some reason, w7 wouldn't recognise the file.

Spot on, thank you!

For those that transfer music to their device using WMP on the PC via ActiveSync, you can set it to convert not only the format, but bitrate when it syncs songs to the device.

I use Tuneraft and I like the results. You can google it.

Or try this ?

Funnily enough, I was having trouble with wma's
I wanted the quote from the Avatar film, where Jake says 'the sky people have sent us a message', as my new sms alert. I tried several different formats with no success. Then I had a brainstorm. I played the dvd and using 'RiAY recorder' a free program for voice notes etc on my phone, I recorded it and it saves as a wav file. Then I used 'tonality', another free program, to select the file as my new sms message alert.
It works, albeit as a slightly 'low tech' approach

I use zamzar.com to do small file conversions. I use a "junk mail" account to receive the files, though.

Had Rhodium for a month, have a handful of questions

Hi, I came from the Wizard and am still learning my Rhodium, I have a few questions that will probably give me a "shoulda had a V8" moment once I hear the answers, but I will ask anyway...
1- how do I set speed dial?
On my wizard I was able to assign a button to a person and just press and hold.
2- is there any way/program to create a zoom function on the camera?
3- how do I make a tab/shortcut to NOTIFICATIONS?
4- I installed a Facebook app, other than putting it in the start menu or in the programs tab, is there a way I can create a dedicated tab (like people, calendar, messages, settings, etc) to go to Facebook?
5- where the heck do I put tunes I want to use as an alarm sound (not to be confused with ringtones)?
Thanks in advance for your input.
Here's me smacking my forhead...Shoulda had a V8!!

Voted.
I have tried dropping my sounds into the main windows directory, but when I go to set an alarm, it isn't reading my tunes. Perhaps there is a size limit or is it wav specific? I have even tried naming the file alarm-name as I have seen that in windows. I have tried resetting my device...nothing.
Do you have any idea what I may be doing wrong?
Again, thank you.

1. Go to the contact, hit the Menu softkey and "add to speed dial".
2. The zoom bar just below the TP2 screen zooms the camera.

I believe that alarm sounds must be in WAV format, or they won't be recognized.

Thank you, I didnt even know that, I should have RTFM LOL! but thank you!
It took me some time to figure out what the hell the zoom bar was, but now I think I have it.
I will try converting my files to wav format and maybe the alarms will work.
Setting a speed dial contact is next on my list.
Thank you for all the advice so far!!
Now does anyone have any idea if I can make a dedicated tab for Facebook, and also how to make a shortcut or tab for notifications?
Thanks in advance.
I am still trying to make more prominent/easier shortcuts or actual TF3 tabs for Facebook and notifications.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
I do have the Facebook app loaded in the programs tab and in the start menu. What I'd like to do is have an actual TAB...like Home, Weather, Programs...Facebook.

As far as I know those are preset into the 3d software, so its either going to have to be an update or one of the gurus here will have to hack the system.
For alarms, I like to use spoon alarm, it seems to work much much better at finding songs to use as alarms (and its really easy to use). Only thing thats no good is that you can't set multiple alarms like the windows one. Plus every soft reset you will have to reload spoon alarm for it to go off, but you can play music

To get them to show up for notifications and events:
- WAV files go in \Windows.
- MP3 & WMA files can work too, but you have to put them into \Application Data\Sounds
This should be the same for the alarm sounds, but I haven't actually used the alarm on mine yet (had it about 2 weeks).

[Q] Is there a way to get Music to NOT scan directories?

I'm using the default music app. I just want to stop it from scanning and
adding directories from the microSD card that contain audio files that are
not music. (the system noises, content of phone calls, other data
that isn't intended for it to read). These are all in their own directories,
so filtering based on source of content should be fine.
If that's not possibly could someone suggest a music app that does support
where to read from?

you can make a new text file with nothing in it, but without the .txt (or watever) tag, rename it to .nomedia (AND NOTHING ELSE), and place it in the directories you do not want found. i am pretty sure this is the method as i dont have my phone with me
EDIT: confirmed this also works with images that you do not want to show up in your gallery... comes in handy ;D
ahh -- the .filename (so its invisable) and its a flag to the app to ignore that directory.
I follow.
Thanks

I always get folders of images that show up in the gallery app, full of cached map tiles. This should be helpful. Do you know if this works recursively? That is, if I put it in /system, would the app search deeper into /system/app or skip all directories below?
Either way, I really appreciate you mentioning this, I was curious about how the scanning was controlled.

sorry about the late post. i wouldve replied sooner, but my laptop broke down.

but yes, the .nomedia file hides the main and sub directories
maybe clearing the gallary's cache from settings>applications>manage applications>gallery

Confused About Custom Ringtones In Mango

I remember reading that they would allow for ringtone creator apps bein made available with the mango update, but just a few days ago there was news about having to use zune on the pc to make the ringtone and categorize the file as a ringtone then sync it over to the fun
which way will it be will we be able to cut our mp3s on our devices and make them into a ringtone or will we have to use the pc to do so?
why is microsoft so strict on downloading mp3 files from the browser and adding them to the zune library that way or even downloading ringtones through the browser and applying them as a ringtone?

I'm assuming that there will be various options, and since Mango and the Dev Tools only just came out, you probably aren't gonna see any custom ringtone apps yet.
Pretty sure the PC option was for those who already had their own set of ringtones that they've made themselves on the PC (or those that know how). Considering Zune is the only way to transfer media from PC to Phone, makes sense that it'd be the way to get your ringtones to your phone as well.

I can tell you what I did. I followed the instructions in the Mango Tips & Tricks thread. First you need to make sure your intended is less than 40 seconds long & less than 1 MB in size. Also, make sure it's a MP3 or WMA. To do this, used a audio editing software. I used AVS Audio Converter6 (Paid for app). Than load it into Zune by putting it in a folder being monitored by Zune for music. You can check in Zune settings which folders are watched & add or remove folders as needed. Now in the Zune software, find the file & right click on it. Click on Edit, than click the Genre field & type in Ringtone. Than just drag it to the WP7 icon at the buttom of Zune. On your WP7 device, go to the ringtones settings & it'll show up at the top of the list under "Custom". It'll be named by filename btw.
I gather this works only for ringtones and not SMS/Email alerts?

I would assume that you just remove them from your Zune media library and resync. I suppose you could also change the Genre from Ringtones to something else as well.
Wait ... you guys can sync your mango device ??? My Zune kind of detect it, but it's not. Then it ask for update but always failed with WMDU error or something like that.

You need to update your Zune software. From the main post detailing how to update, download the version of Zune sw needed for Mango
I am not seeing the custom ringtone. I did exactly as said in the tips and tricks. I used Audacity to cut the mp3 to 39 secs. Its 640 KB in size. Still won't show up in Phone.

thanks for the instructions.
BTW. you can still use RingRing7 to create a ringtone. When you are finished cropping your mp3 you can deploy. The application creates a temp folder in the ringring7 folder with your newly created ringtone. copy or move it to a save place (your ringtone folder). The application will give you an error. you need to copy/move the file before you click OK to the error message (just ignore it).

Annoyingly, yes, the new "custom ringtone" functionality only applies to actual ringtones, not any other alert tone. One of the formal MS support forums for Mango says that they're still looking into custom alert tones.
Since it's really only just a registry key, I'm not really sure why they made this new functionality so limiting. And, of course, none of the registry editors work anymore. <sigh>
Brad.
yea, i was bummed that it was only for the ringer and not sms/alerts. i hope they add that in a later release...
Mango on my Trophy and Zune 4.8XXXXX. This worked flawlessly, took one of the ringtones from my TP2 (one I used for my wife) and put it on my Trophy, flawless.
It's about time I can do a basic task like this on WP7....

It won't show up in Zune on your phone, only under ringtones in settings.
I also could not see MP3 in Zune. When I took the MP3 file and converted it to a WMA and saved it back to the same folder that it came from, I showed up in Zune. I could then drag it down to my WP7 icon and it installed the ringtone and it showed up on the phone in settings / ringtones.
Cant seem to figure out how to find the MP3.

[Q] Import VCard?

I finally rooted my Evo, and I loaded this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1364075 I love it. Only problem I am having is that I had someone send me a vcard contact through SMS / MMS. Message comes in with an attachment, but phone thinks it is a video? How do you import it in as a contact? Always came in simply as a contact on my old stock ROM. Is this a problem with all CM ROMs, or is it just the ICS one I loaded?
Download the attachment from your sms client, browse your sd card via file manager, check MMS for the vcard, move it to the root of the sd card, open the people [contacts] app, press menu, import/export.
Really? All those steps? No way to just click and open/import? Doable, yes, but odd there is not an all-in-one solution.

The 'all in one solution' would be to just to to people, hit menu and click import. I don't know if it'll detect it inside the folder so you need to move it. And you can complete that whole process in 30 seconds or less.
OK but how do I download the vcf attachment? When I click on it, it seems to attempt to play a video file... and after playing the video, there is no vcf file on the SD Card. I tried with the native SMS app and with HandCent. Same result.
