Question about non-organized ROM threads in Desire Android Development - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Why so many threads....I have a suggestion to make some kind of organized threads:
modified 2.2 froyo roms with sense
modified 2.2 froyo roms without sense
and to add 1 question...is ROM MANAGER suitable to load ROM without need of RECOVERY MODE (AMON-RA) and wipe etc ?

I've always used recovery for flashing. It's easy to use and you know what it is doing. I've no idea about Rom Manager.

it has a lot of options....

Can we make some kind of excel file of all
NON SENSE and SENSE 2.2 ROM's?
With differences etc.....
Which ROM's are good with NON SENSE?

Sensless or Stock Android

Hey guys I have been doing quite a bit of searching through the forums and still have a couple questions about custom roms and rooting. Forgive the noobness but the droid incredible is my first android device and I only recently got it.
1. My first question is what is the simplest way (rom + root I assume) to get a stock version of android on my incredible? Also what rom would you recommend (I have seen a pretty big list but know nothing about them)?
2. What is the difference, if any, between a kernel and a rom? Ive seen both words used a lot and have seen kernels that are stock and roms that are as well. Which would I use between the two?
I know these questions may be dumb but I have been searching for a couple days and have gone through hundreds of threads trying to find the definitive answer (there were some benefits though, I use launcher pro and the droid x's keyboard now) any help would be appreciated.
1. You are right in assuming that the quickest (and only) way to get a stock version of Android on your phone is to root your phone and install a custom recovery that will allow you to flash a rom. It is not really possible for me to recommend a rom because rom's are all about personal preference and my preference may be different from yours. That being said, if you are interested in stock Android, check out Cyanogenmod. The biggest thing right now is that for the Incredible, Cyanogenmod is the only true stock Android that is compiled from AOSP (Android Open Source Project) however it is still in its early stages for our device, so it's still buggy. The other roms are modified versions of our stock sense rom, so some of the roms are modified to have the bulkier parts of of the Sense UI removed, but it is still a Sense rom.
2. I'm not going to profess to be extremely in the know about kernels, but a kernel is the go-between for the hardware and the os/applications. If you want to learn more about kernels, you can read the wikipedia page about kernels found here. Basically what you need to know is that the rom is the operating system, so if you wanted to change the OS such as from Sense to Vanilla Android, you would flash a rom. If you wanted to change the way the system runs, such as if you want your processor to be overclocked or undervolted, you would flash a kernel.
Hope this helps.
That answered everything! Thanks for the reply and I will keep checking the forums for stock roms that seem stable!

[ROM]

I am sure most of you haven been clicking like mad on the threads with [ROM] in front of the subject, thinking that this must be the one and only rom for your desire, just to find out that the rom is a copy of a copy of a copy of another rom ?
What I would like is that we could have a thread with the names of "original" roms.
What do you mean by this? All roms are based on either HTC's sense or a stock AOSP build.
this is why all original froyo sense rom are based on the ota update which is not a full rom..it´s only a update....so we have to thanks people like klutsh or paul to make a system dump from the update
with kind regards..Alex
edit: but the roms have differnet mod´s and some have sense and some are google like...So you have to find the one that is the best for you...and there is no best rom...all rom´s here are good...so it´s the personal feeling whats the best for you

Is it ok to change the default htc kernel is sense 2.2?

Im trying to change my kernel in my rooted sense 2.2 htc evo. Is that possible or do i need to change roms for that too?
Sent From Tapatalk.
Also, whats the easiest way to change my default boot animation? The file is called newbootanimation.zip and it has an mp3 file also. Where should i put them?

Please use the search function built into the forum. You will learn best by searching and reading.
If you got the kernel, or are getting the kernel you want to flash from the XDA forum, the developers post information and restrictions that apply to flashing the kernel in the first post of the thread that the kernel is posted in.
There are a few ways to change the boot animation... search the Evo 4G Themes and Apps sub-forum, there are few threads with boot animations and instructions on how to change boot animations available there.
Good luck.
If you are running a sense rom just pick a kernel designed for sense and flash away. If you are running an aosp rom find one for aosp and then flash. Be sure to wipe cache and dalvik before flashing kernels. The Dev. will state if his kernel is for sense or aosp

Click to collapse

[Q] Rom question

I was looking in the ROM wiki and while there is a lot of info there I didn't see what I was looking for and I was hoping I could get an answer from either the devs or the users. There are a lot of rom's floating around. What I wanted to know was of the available froyo based sense rom's which one has the most storage available after flashing? Of the froyo based no-sense rom's which one has the most storage available after flashing?
I know sense based Dark Cocoa III has roughly 165+mb free when flashed and then I use root explorer to remove any other unwanted apps or things I don't use or need. Its easy to do and now I have more free space than used.

Upgrading Sense Myself

Is there a way to take the Rom I'm using and upgrade the sense to 3.0 myself?
Hey,
I am sorry to say this but no, rom building is not an easy thing to do you need the right tools and knowledge to put it together and different versions of sense run completely different and if you just try to change the files within the system they most likely will not be compatible and it will just fc! Best thing to do is just flash a sense 3.0 rom!
Being that it seems to me that you're interested in starting developing Roms why don't you start with this HERE and read thru all the guides and I hope you're on your way.
