[Q] how to know if your phone os rooteded? - Desire General

Just wanna know how one can tell if a phone is rooted or not cos i just performed the unrevoked3 rooting and all went well but would still like to confirm either through the phone's setting or other means.Cheers

just install one of the rooted only apps such as the wifi teather app (assuming you are not on froyo yet) if that works then congrats

Whoopy!!!!It worked, just installed the wifi tether app and wholla!!!!Thanks man.Hope'll still be able to install officiall HTC OTA 2.2 in the future and move apps to SDCard.

not sure about the update. I updated mine manually after debranding. My post is still in the first three pages and I have put a small guide there. Having froyo is better than having root in my opinion. Glad its worked for you though. Get the ad blocker app while you have root!

Just lost root randomly...

So I just noticed that I have lost root on my phone. Im running OMJ's 2.2 rom and have been rooted since I got the phone. I now cannot access and of my apps that require root and this has just happened today. Anyone know how to resolve this or know why this happened?
Try flashing superuser 2.1 I had that problem with the first DC beta. I'm on my phone so I can't upload it at the moment but its in the dev forum somewhere.

I have superuser on my phone and can't find a superuser in the market. My market now shows apps that were blocked previously. Did HTC or sprint force an update on me without consent?

Help a newbie/moron understand

hi all,
first, please go easy on me. This stuff still confuses me, no matter how much I read.
I'm currently running 2.1 with Unrevoked3. The only reason I wanted this was wifi tethering. It works great (is working as I type this).
I was hesitant to use unrevoked Forever because there was no S-On option. I did flash a rooted 2.2 to my phone, but it was buggy, so I went back to my nandroid backup and have been happy with 2.1 now for a while.
With the recent upgrade of ur forever 1.1 allowing s-on I'm thinking of installing it on my phone.
Here's what I want to do - can anyone tell me if it will work?
Install Runrevoked Forever 1.1
Install OTA Froyo update
Be able to still use wifi tethering
Still get good audio from Pandora (and a working camera)
So I'm sure I can do step 1 and step 2 above, but I'm unsure as to if by having UR forever on my phone if that alone will allow me to use wifi tethering. Would I have to do something different to get wifi to work, or would just having UR FOrever on my phone be enough to get superuser permissions and run wifi tethering?
Thanks - sorry I'm so lost in all this.
My understanding of this is that you would not be rooted if you do this however you could still root by installing an unsigned pc36img.
As a heads up there is a rooted version the stock 2.2. this should be exactly liek the stock 2.2 from the ota except that it will be rooted and give you the ability to use wifi tether. I woudl go that route.
As a rule of thumb NEVER take OTA. I am sure with forever you can probably get your root back but then you need a rooted rom to take advantage of it anyway. so jsu creates a bunch of work

Android-wifi-tether on Rooted 2.2?

So I justed rooted my phone and the first thing I wanted to try is the Wireless Tether app. It seems that I'm able to get my laptop connected to the wireless but no internet connection. Looks like I might need the Netfilter-enabled kernel to make this work. If so anyone of you know how to get this enabled or install? I know it will work with a custom ROM but I like the stock Sense ROM and I'm still waiting on the official Fresh 3.2 release. So in the mean time it would be great to get it to work on a stock rooted 2.2 ROM.

Install this and you should be good to go.
You are awesome, that apk did the trick. Uninstall the one I install from the market and install this one worked. Thanks a lot for you help.
Glad to help
Hi, I am Wondering what you mean by Stock Rooted 2.2 Rom. I have one of the First released Evo's. I have done a number of things to it. Right Now I am Running 1.47 with Full root (Unrevoked 4 ever s-off) I have Clock work Recovery. I am trying to get to 2.2. I sounded like I would be able to just revert Recovery and Flash the OTA to 2.2 then install the newest Wireless tether. That didn't work. It appears that super user wasn't working right so I uninstalled super user and Applied the newest version from the market.
I still can't get my phone upgraded. I tried flashing a rooted 2.2 but got stuck in an Endless reboot cycle.
I am just wondering what 2.2 Rom you used. I would like to keep my phone a stock as possible with the exception of being able to run wireless tether and my other root programs (autostarts, root explorer, titanium)
I just can't figure out what I am missing
Thanks,
I'm sure he's talking about the new root method for evo's that had the official 2.2 release installed. Once you go back to 2.1 and root they have you install a rooted version of stock 2.2 build with sense.

THANKS!!!!!
You made me look in a Different Direction. I was able to Apply the Sprint OTA update Using Clockwork and before rebooting Apply the 22root.zip people have been using to root on the 2.2 phones to Upgrade (No Data Loss) my phone a completly stock Sprint Software with 2.2 rooted.
Just wanted to say thanks for posting the .apk! I was having the exact same problem as the OP, and this fixed it for me too! I wonder what's different about this apk vs. the one in the market?

It is a rebuild that they are testing for froyo. The one in the market is for eclair.
You can get all the experimental versions and information and updates here http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
As long as i install the file, it works awesome.
Do u install on phone or comp and how do u do it I used unrevoked 3.32 to root but wifi-teather needs netfilter enabled kernel what do I do?

[Q] Is there a Super One Click update ?

I have a Motorola Atrix.
I rooted it with super 1 click.
a few weeks later ATT/Android did a push of an update and my phone was no longer rooted and an app I really need ANDFIRE (firewall) and it was not working properly.
Additiopnally I was not able to root my phone again.
I talked ATT into replacing the phone because this was an important app.
My new phone was also rooted using Super One Click , however I would like to do the Android update.
The reason for wanting to do the update is my VPN started working smoothly.
If I allow this update is there an update to Super 1 Click that I can root my phone with again?
I already have SDK and adb setup to run on the same pc I rooted with before.
There was a lot of talk on the internet about this issue.
I hope there is a fix.
Please be aware I am new at this.
Thank you

Downgraded to 3.5, ready to root, then what :) ,,,,,,

Howdy,
I love my first Fire phone (OTA to v4.6.3, unlocked version). I put Gapps on it, works great, love the form factor and everything.
Then I bought a second one, which came 3.5.1. I figured why not root it? I have rooted a few so I did not wait. I stayed away Kingroot knowing too well how Chinese apps leave backdoor to Beijing. (i am Chinese American, was gonna buy a Moto, but, maybe,,,)
Now I am at this stage, the phone is downgraded to 3.5 per XDA post. I have put the Airplane mode on all the time fearing OTA. I will try to sideload Towelroot to avoid turning Wifi (OTA you know).
My question is, once I root it, how do I prevent future OTAs? Which steps I have to take to disable automatic upgrade forced down by Amazon?
My second question is, once rooted, is there anyways to upgrade it to 4.6.x and keep root, or use a fully functional ROM? Again I would not use any apps from China to flash ROM.
Appreciate any tips, thanks,
OK, here is an update. The moment I turned on Wifi, the auto upgrade started (i remember it would be 4.6.1 as indicated by the process). I had to race to Towelroot the phone. Because the original phone has no file manager app (my oversight), I had to keep Wifi on and register with Amazon and get ES File Explorer from Amazon Appstore. With ES File Exp, I side loaded Super SU, and two root checker apps. Luncky I was able to confirm root before the phone finished downloading upgrade. (turn off Wifi the moment I got ES File Exp).
Now, I need to stop the auto upgrade. Here is a link I have not tried. :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-phone/general/guide-disabling-auto-updates-fire-phone-t2930319
I read somewhere else on xda that I can delete the Device Service Platform in system/apps, but I could not find it.
I would appreciate some advice hereon how to go forward. Which is best way to stop the pending upgrade and eliminate future auto upgrade. Many thanks,
You understand that 4.6.x can be rooted, right?
No need to stay on 3.5.x to root.
Plenty of info aout this on this forum.
lol Yea dude like hack said, you can root up to the latest version. http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-phone/help/installing-root-safestrap-cm11-t3157339/post61862217#post61862217 here's a thread with a guide go wild =)
If you want a later version, you have to root it with KingRoot. I have heard Wondershare works too. But no experience with that or not sure why you would/wouldn't trust it more than Kingroot. And why just not use Supersume to clean Kingroot up afterwards? Those guys are very active on xda and are very trustworthy.
