WMA Tag Issue with 2.2 - Desire General

We know this is a problem since 2.2
The Desire can't read the Artist tag in WMA files. To me this is a big deal.
Converting to MP3 is not an option because:
1. I have over 24,000 files
2. A lot of my files are in WMA lossless format and there is no MP3 equivilant
3. When using the same bandwidth settings (say 192kbp/s), MP3 offers inferior sound quality.
So I have raised a ticket to HTC, sent them a file etc and have not had the following reponse:
Thanks. We have experienced the same issue as you. This has been escalated with HTC. However in the meantime you can get around the problem by converting your music files into MP3 format

So at least the fault is acknowledged so all I can do now is wait

I used mp3 tag to convert the WMA tags to ID3 version 1 and it worked for me. It does it automatically so will soon take care of all your songs.

Thanks for this.
Can't actually see the tag to tag option in the latest downloadable version (even though the instructions talk about it) for some reason.
Having said that, I would rather not downgrade my files metadata if I can avoid it.
Lets see if we get a fix.

I hope we get a fix too but in the mean time ill just have to copy the files I want on my phone and change the tags manually :-S

it doesn't work with wma..
i am using mp3tag v2.46a, then remove tag, add tag, then save
but it still show "unknown artist" in desire music player..

Best music player on the Desire

What is the best music player on the Desire ?
Something that ideally supports mp3, m3u, flac, wmp, wav ogg
Stock supports MP3 and WAV. Flac is supported if you root and install CyanogenMod. I haven't found any player capable of playing M3U, WMP or OGG yet.
I'm pretty sure MortPlayer plays .ogg (brilliant music player BTW) - I could be wrong though...
If installing CyanogenMod allows for flac playback then then pushes me that much closer towards rooting my device - just need the courage as I've heard one or two stories of people bricking their phones. I wouldn't consider myself that much of a noob with these things but I hope someone can come up with a noobs guide to rooting your Desire...
TuneWiki is the best, has more than just music playback!

Ahem... The built-in player supports playing OGG files...
Thanks for the tips. I prefer MortPlayer which can play my files even if they are not perfectly rendered ID3 tags and have no album cover.
One thing that annoys me about most of the newest phone on the market is that it requires you to create a playlist of some sort.
Back in the days when most players would work just by simply playing all the files inside a folder.

Meridian can do that. You can navigate through your sdcard, long press the desired folder and play all (and a few other options)

Not mine it doesn't. Copy and pasted files into a directory and played. Not until a few days later did I set up a few playlists. This was using the stock player but was also playing around with TuneWike and 3 at the same time.

Thats something thats annoyed me too. I just want to play files in my folders, not spend ages making a playlist........ Just downloaded Meridian and its doing what I want. Thanks for the tip off.
I just make sure all the tracks within a folder have the same 'Album' name, that way when you sort by album, they're all grouped correctly.
You can do this in Windows by highlighting all the tracks within a folder, then right click and go to "Properties | Summary | Advanced" and update the 'Album Title' field.
It can be instant, or take a minute or so to update the album name, depending on what type of ID tag it uses.

[Q] HTC Music Player doesn't do well with WMA files after Android 2.2 update

Hello everyone,
I have an issue that is driving me CRAZY, and I hope some of you are having the same issue...or at least suggestions for how to fix it. I am running the new Android 2.2 update on my Evo. (It's just the normal, plain software from Sprint/HTC...nothing custom, none of that root stuff...just regular).
I always keep a few gigabytes of music (in WMA format) on my SD card. I noticed that after the update, the HTC Music player would no longer recognize (and sort) the music by Artist or Composer. The only things it could identify about each file were the Title, Album, and Genre. I miss the option of browsing through my music by Artist and/or Composer. This was not a problem with Android 2.1, but it is now. I even tried deleting all the music from my SD card and re-syncing it from my PC...same result. I also tried music from a different PC...same result.
So here's what I discovered this morning: If I convert my WMA files to MP3s, then the music player works just as before!! It recognizes all the ID3 tags within each file. This is a big problem for me. First of all, my music library is nearly 40 GB in size, and I do not want to have to convert EVERYTHING to MP3 before I sync. This is tedious and unnecessary. Secondly, the original specs/documentation of the HTC Evo state that it supports the WMA file format. I made sure of that before purchasing, because it was one of the big factors for me in making the decision to switch to Sprint and the Evo.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to solve this problem? I'm about to call HTC now and complain. Thanks.
Why are you so attached to WMA? IME/IMHO it's not a very good format because the quality of the mp3 format is a little better plus the DRM that gets embeded in the tracks. Every track that I have *ahem* acquired or even recorded myself has time bombed on me at some point. I should be able to play the music I record at any time!
/Rant
Don't take what I said too personally. I'm just pissed off at Microsoft. That said, I do not know what is causing your files not be played back properly as I do not have any to test.
Just a guess but, perhaps the new player in froyo doesn't read id3 tags from wma files correctly.

Well, that wasn't the purpose of this post, but since you asked...
I've been ripping my CDs to my hard drive for about 10 years now. Windows Media Player made it sooo easy to organize my music library. Way back in the day, you could only rip to WAV or different varieties of WMA. To rip to mp3, I would have had to use a different program, or purchase a plug-in for Windows Media Player. Only in the last few versions has Windows Media Player had the "rip to mp3" option built-in for free.
When I originally started my collection, I read about the differences between WMA and mp3. I got the understanding that the two formats essentially offered the same quality and features, but WMA generally used about half the file size for the same bitrate. So I chose WMA and stuck with it all this time.
Even when I buy music from Amazon or iTunes, I've gotten in the habit of converting it to WMA...just for consistency.
I just got off the phone with HTC, who says they haven't heard of this issue before. I was advised to perform a factory reset. But if I can't resolve the issue soon, I'm considering just converting every piece of music I have to mp3. (Sigh). But at nearly 40 GB, and various bitrates, who knows how long that could take!? (Sighing again). I wonder what program could handle that amount of music all at once. And I pray it won't screw up all the ID3 tags and the ratings I've so carefully given.

I have a couple of WMA files on my SD card. They have always been listed under "Unknown Artist" along with a few mp3's.
when I click on unknown artist, the files show up listed under their correct names. When I click on the wma files (both by the same artist), they expand into individual file names.
After updating to 2.2 nothing has changed. Everything works normally. That would suggest HTC's advice may work for you.
On another note, don't you love it when you post a question, and the first response is, "I don't know how to help, but I don't like that kind of file anyway, and neither should you!!!
Hmmm...and your WMA files were never fully recognized? Not even on Android 2.1? Interesting. I guess I'll attempt a hard reset tonight, or maybe tomorrow.

I had the exact same issue and can report that a hard reset had no effect. I'll be looking to convert my library to mp3 as well. Froyo has its quirks.

Here's an idea: Go into a Sprint store with your Mini SD chip and see if they'll put in in another Android phone. See if it exhibits the same issue.
Good idea. I might try that tomorrow.

Funny, my wife is using the rooted stock froyo, first leaked build and all wma look fine with embedded art using HTC player. I am using cyanogen latest nightly and it still can't read wma tags at all. But I do like playing with the new DSP settings--worth the switch. As a workaround I converted the wma to mp4 and they read just fine.
I'm surprised anyone had success with wma on any version of android. For me, on 2.1, wma files wouldn't play (but a few DID, which confounds me to no end). Now on rooted 2.2, I experience the same behavior. Just for fun, I used astro and simply renamed the file type of some wmas to .mp3. Surprisingly, it seemed to work. I thought I was on to something. Then I tries that with some Audioslave songs. No worky. So probably the ones I did 'get to work', were some of the few that for no discernible reason, to me, already worked.
I would like to hear more about this issue, actually.
Its a problem in Froyo with both WMA and AAC encoded files. Reported in Google Code, so please go there, sign in to google, then star the issue so it gets some attention:

So is it just my ignorance or does the stock music player really not play wma files? Any resolution to this?

That's because WMA files are Windows Media Audio files.
I know that. I guess I wish we (google, Microsoft) could all just get along. Oh well, converting to mp3. So much for lossless

Get PowerAMP.
It can play wma, as well as FLAC, wav, and just about everything else. Lossless and lossy
It also has a full Equalizer and many other features. I love it.

Wow. Thanks so much. Works great. I love this forum.
There's a line in the media_profiles.xml at the very end that has wma and wmv disabled. You can find it in /system/etc. Try changing the false to true and see if that works.
I don't use those file formats so I've never had a reason to change it and test to see if it works.

ugh. poweramp doesn't work either. I thought it was, but it was playing an mp3 version of the song I was testing. Didn't realize this until after I purchased the full version.
I'm not rooted (yet) so I can't play with the system files...

Just transfer the files onto your comp and rip them to mp3's. I know this is kinda a pain in the ass but it will solve your prob.

iTunes Match

Has anyone considered using this to standardize their music collection?
I have a bunch of music from all different sources with varying degrees of information attached and mixed sound quality.
I think this would upgrade all of my music to a good quality with proper tags and artwork for $25.
What are your thoughts? Does it work like I think it does?

I had for a half of second considered this for use with my iPad. But I am confused why you are posting this here.? That leads me to believe that it does NOT work like you think it does. Because afaik there is no way to use Apple cloud on your Nexus.
Google Music imo.
I belive jasbur17 is saying he would like to use itunes match to upgrade all his music to 256 bitrate AAC files, convert them back to 320bitrate mp3s and also fix the tags using itunes match.
Then use google music to serve.

Why pay £27 for that when you could probably buy an ID tagger for a fraction of the price and download the music elsewhere since you already own it. Or just rip from CD if they have them

Again I don't think the concept of CLOUD is understood.
Actually, I'm not even speaking of using it as a cloud service.
iTunes Match scans your music then gives you access to all of the upgraded files in the cloud. At that point you could delete all of your local music, download all of the upgraded files to your computer, then send them to your nexus.
At that point you are done with Match. NO need to renew at the end of the year.

Best way to get iTunes Music onto One

I'm looking for the best way to get my music from iTunes locally onto my HTC One.
Preferably, I'd like to remove the remaining DRM on my iTunes music, and let google play music do the rest (the only songs not on play are DRM-protected).
From there I think I'd just download the library and put it on my phone.
But mainly I guess I'm asking how to remove that DRM?
If you are willing to pay $25 for the year, iTunes match will allow you to download your library drm free. That is what I did and then used Google Music to upload to the cloud.

You can make mp3 versions of your songs within iTunes itself then put it on any device you want. That's what I do.
Go to iTunes settings/preferences then "general" then click the button that says "import settings" and select MP3 encoder. Save the settings.
Then right click the songs you want to convert and select "create MP3 version." You can either keep or delete the AAC version. I delete it because I don't want 2 versions of the same song.
I'm pretty sure it removes DRM... because once I do this, I'm able to do anything I want with it. Amazon cloud, google, etc.
Sent from my HTC One.
Easiest way, use a music converter program to convert to DRM free MP3, then upload them to google music. I personally like the program sound taxi to do this, can queue up as many songs as you want, it will convert 8-12 at a time until they whole queue is done.

yeah I'm currently trying to burn my music to an audio CD to remove the DRM and re-ripping them to my library. I already did a quarter of my DRM music that way.
The rest of it is on google music.
But can I just drag the MP3s onto the phone?

Yes you can just put the music on ur phone, I myself prefer to have it on google music... but I have unlimited data so it doesn't matter for me.
