What is the best music player on the Desire ?
Something that ideally supports mp3, m3u, flac, wmp, wav ogg
Stock supports MP3 and WAV. Flac is supported if you root and install CyanogenMod. I haven't found any player capable of playing M3U, WMP or OGG yet.
I'm pretty sure MortPlayer plays .ogg (brilliant music player BTW) - I could be wrong though...
If installing CyanogenMod allows for flac playback then then pushes me that much closer towards rooting my device - just need the courage as I've heard one or two stories of people bricking their phones. I wouldn't consider myself that much of a noob with these things but I hope someone can come up with a noobs guide to rooting your Desire...

Ahem... The built-in player supports playing OGG files...
Thanks for the tips. I prefer MortPlayer which can play my files even if they are not perfectly rendered ID3 tags and have no album cover.
One thing that annoys me about most of the newest phone on the market is that it requires you to create a playlist of some sort.
Back in the days when most players would work just by simply playing all the files inside a folder.

Meridian can do that. You can navigate through your sdcard, long press the desired folder and play all (and a few other options)

Not mine it doesn't. Copy and pasted files into a directory and played. Not until a few days later did I set up a few playlists. This was using the stock player but was also playing around with TuneWike and 3 at the same time.

Thats something thats annoyed me too. I just want to play files in my folders, not spend ages making a playlist........ Just downloaded Meridian and its doing what I want. Thanks for the tip off.
I just make sure all the tracks within a folder have the same 'Album' name, that way when you sort by album, they're all grouped correctly.
You can do this in Windows by highlighting all the tracks within a folder, then right click and go to "Properties | Summary | Advanced" and update the 'Album Title' field.
It can be instant, or take a minute or so to update the album name, depending on what type of ID tag it uses.

I downloaded fun game called sniper vs sniper, which i really like. However It seems all my media players including the default one are picking up the ingame sounds as songs =/.
Does anyone know a workaround for this? I would like to keep the ingame sounds just not have the media player recognize them.
what media player are u using? i use Mixzing and it allows u to choose what folders to add musics or media to it from

This does not seem to work with HTCs gallery and media player. Anyone else concur or am I doing something wrong?
Works for me with the stock media player and gallery, I hide my 'Audiobooks' directory that way which has both images and mp3's.
Hey, I have tried looking all over on my phone, searched Google, searched xda, but to no avail; If i missed something, Mod, feel free to share the link and close this thread.
Anyway, here's my problem--After downloading a couple games (assassins creed and a racing game) all of their stupid sound files populate in my music library. Assassins Creed alone has over 1,200...
Is there any way to exclude those folders from the music player library, or put some sort of a filter on if the songs are < 30 seconds? I would prefer to keep using the stock music player if possible, but if there are no ways to fix it i'd be open to hearing about other players that would accomplish what i'm looking for.

I haven't had any need to play music on the Evo yet, but I will for sure be keeping an eye out for another music player....
put a ".nomedia" file in the directories that you don't want it to see

If you're on windows just open up notepad. File save as ".nomedia" with the quotes. that'll make notepad keep the extension and not append .txt to the end of it.

I tried placing this file in my "youmail" folder, but DoubleTwist is still seeing my downloaded voicemails as playable songs. Does this ".nomedia" file only affect the HTC Music Player?

Title says it all really. Whenever I transfer files to my phone using WMP under Win 7 it converts them all to WMA files which is pointless since the track order then becomes alphabetical not as the id3 tag lists it. My version of WMP (can't find a version number since there is no file menu) does not have an option uncheck convert files as necessary like some people say there is under the device name in the sync menu.
Does anyone know how to stop this horrible behaviour and let me keep my media as I want it not how MS want it?
I thought there was a way, at least as far as Win Media 11 goes. I rarely use it so I can't recall it off the top of my head.
The next easiest thing is to stop using Microsoft products to handle audio and music; WMP is bloated and so un-intuitive.
Try Winamp, it's got a little bloat but it's pretty simple and manageable.
itunes does it's job but like most apple products, it's made for right-brained, artistic and people who feel good about things. That's not me.
I use file explorer windows, ctrl +c & ctrl +v

Why do you even use wmp to transfer mp3 to your phone? just make a folder on your sd card has music and mount your sd card to your computer and drap and drop you files.

I tried Winamp, but it lists 2 copies of each track on the phone after syncing. There is ony one on it, but Winamp list 2. Annoying, but not the end of the world!

I use WMP because it sorts all my audio files out for me. I have many files that aren't in a very good filing system from years ago and basically I'm too lazy to sort them out into Album/Artist folders (they have proper id3 tags though) to make finding things easier. The newer stuff I have ripped is better, in many ways due to iTunes organising it when I had an iPhone...
Also I have lots of Audio Books and WMP allows me to create Auto Playlists which excludes those files. I bashed iTunes a lot when I *had* to use it, it was bloaty and only recognised my iPhone about 2 in 3 times on Windows, but no it's gone I kinda miss it!
Found a solution/workaround
If I turn on USB debugging, thus disabling MTP mode, WMP will give me the option to not convert files. It's not as convenient as MTP since you have to click connect, but that's a small price to pay I think.
WMP12 (which is what Win7 has) can change the rip settings by pressing the ALT key to reveal the menu and then going to Tools->Options and looking for the Devices tab. Check the properties to see what the settings are here.
Also, if you don't use WMA at all change the settings in the "Rip Music" tab to use a format other than WMA. Don't know if this will help but I generally recommend to people when you don't use the format.
This problem drives me crazy. Why does WMP convert MP3 files? With my Arc S WMP converts only parts of the files. If I change the preferred format in "default-capability.xml" from MP4 to MP3 it works, but not for all files. This is sick.
I don't wanna miss WMP because it converts to 128Kbit/s and saves some space on the SD-Card.

This works for me...
Go to the SYNC menu, YOUR DEVICE, then
the ADVANCED OPTIONS. Click on the QUALITY tab and make sure the MUSIC option
is set to SELECT QUALITY LEVEL AUTOMATICALLY. If you choose any other quality level it will convert to .wma.

damn..how to make it work for videos.
You may try use Avdshare*Video*Converter to Convert MP4 to Windows Media Player more compatilbe video format like convert MP4 to WMV, MP4 to AVI, MP4 to MPG, MP4 to ASF.
Is anyone elses Google Music archiving or collecting their system sounds like ticket, camera click, video record, etc? I found that odd, but not sure if it's just me, or something I did or what. Basically If I'm hitting next next to try and find a song I like, its pulling those system sounds up and plays them. Very odd...considering they are OGG extension.

That is pretty strange, I was under the impression that Google Music would only contain music that you specifically uploaded...maybe you fed it a list of all the music you wanted uploaded and accidentally included a wrong folder?
As for the OGG part, Google Music plays nice with OGG files. I uploaded some ~40GB of OGGs from my laptop when I first signed up for it no problem. It's just a more compressed audio format but Google Music, like most media players that aren't iTunes or Windows media player do.
You may put an .nomedia file in folders you dont wanna show in app...maybe it work.

I bought the Stereoclip yeaterday and I am ''obliged'' to use the HOX to stream music as my cowon J3 BT volume is too low and crappy.
Now to focus on the question here, is there any way to play songs per folder?
I always divide my songs by genre in folders like ''Trance'' ''Rock'' ''80s''...
Ok the HTC music player can play by genre but unfortunetly my mp3s are nothing but well ID3taged + I don't want to put 500 songs in a genre.
So please how can I play by folder?
Any modified htc music app for that purpose?

I would create your own playlists with the Names of the genres you are using.
You can also add sources from DropBox etc this could be a good idea if you want to keep the space on your device free for apps etc.
To do this, goto your music play, click the "Settings" top right corner and click "Add Music source"

I had the same question like you. I Gave up and installed PowerAMP...

Okay, heres three options and I can't think of any other way for you to do it, I hope this is helpful.
1 - Obviously you could use another music player, such as WinAmp.
2 - Sort your music into the folders you want, get a file explorer (I Use ESFileExplorer) go on that, navigate to the folder, long press and then click "Music" that folder will then be loaded by itself into the music, Long winded I know but you can still use the stock app.
3 - Create playlists and just name the playlists by the folder.
2 is probably your best bet !

No worries mate
Tbh never used a third party music player, as in my opinion they are never as loud or clear as the stock. Perhaps that could be sorted if you know what to do with an equaliser, but I don't haha.
Couple of Suggestions that I know are good music players:
DoubleTwist - GirlFriend uses this, its free, very smart and sleek looking, and has many functions. Including the lock screen control you asked for. I'd take a look at this.
Player Pro - Looks very capable but never had an experience with it.
Also
WinAmp - Has been around for long time, before android even existed as it was a PC music player, hense the "Win" for "Windows"
I had a good look at PlayerPro, this could be a brilliant option for you, its got everything you've previously mentioned, playing by folder, lock screen controls. etc etc
Hi mate,
here's what I did on my HTC Desire X. You create a folder with a specific name where you put all your music and then in the Music app on HTC Android, you Search for that folder. It then shows up under Albums and you are able to play only the tracks contained in that Album/folder. For the folder names, they have to be somewhat unique, if you have a lot of music on your phone because otherwise it's gonna getm mixed up.

Since Sense 4+ we can use folders play in the HTC Music app
I just found an easy solution to the problem.
1. Organize all your songs on your phone under folders as you like
2. Connect your phone to a PC
3. Open Windows Media Player
4. Select all songs from one folder (on the phone) and add to Windows Media Player Playlist
5. Rename Playlist according to your preference
6. Save the playlist
7. Copy the playlist from your music folder on your PC and paste it on your phone in the Music folder
8. The playlist will now be available on your stock music player
