[Q] Desire Rebooting After OTA to 2.2. - Desire General

Hi Guys,
Im new to this forum but was hoping i can get some help, i read all the related articles before submitting my case so here goes.
On 1st August 2010 i got a OTA update from HTC for the HTC Desire Unbranded handset.
I downloaded the update over wifi onto my sd card. Then it asked do you wish to install the update so and so so i said 'install now', it performed some backup operations but it said failed to backup settings and automatically restarted the phone.
I got a green bar on the phone so i assumed this was the update in progress. It got to the end and restarted again and i got another green bar. That got to the end and it finally said on the black white htc screen congratulations you have installed the updated so and so.
The phone started.
I realised my sim card was blown away from this update, lost my apn settings, sim card was totally blown. So i called Orange. Told them to send me a new sim card. Anyway prior to me realising about the network. The phone rebooted almost 50 times god knows what it was doing, and eventually i got so mad i switched it off.
Anyway i got a sim card from orange but this problem is not seem to go away, it keeps restarting on its own and i dont have a clue why?
Here are the apps i have installed:
Advanced Task Manager
Aloqa
APN Backup & Restore (decided to get this after first incidence all my apn settings were blown away)
AppBrain
Apps Installer
Aweson Drop
Better Keyboard
Bollywood Hindi Radio
Call filter
Es File Explorer
Extended Controls
Fring
Goggles
Gtasks
Handcent SMS
London Tube Status
Lookout Security
Wave Secure (uninstalled this thought this was the problem)
MP3 Download
Orange Wednesdays
PicSay Pro
Ringtone Randomiser
Sky News
Toss it
The weather Channel
Zedge
Launcherpro
Mybackup pro
Now i unistalled wavesecure thought it was the problem but im still having the problem. When i start My ATK i see there is almost 30 processes running of allmost all the apps when i have not even started them, before when i had 2.1 this never happened and im confused about this.
To be honest. Ive tried tried no result. I even called HTC support they told me to Hold the volume rocker down and power to go into the boot menu and select clear storage i did this.
I put all my phone back together from backup files and settings as everything was erased. Still the phone is restarting on its own.
Any solutions i can try people any help would be appreciated.

Check on your SD card if the update is ~90MB (not branded).
The OTA my phone pulled was about 50MB, but when I googled the filename and re-downloaded the file on my PC the actual size was 90MB. The phone had downloaded just over half of the OTA and went ahead with the update, only to break just about everything. I guess a warning sign was the backup of my settings had an error, and that the update took ages. The real hint that everything was broken was when the phone didn't ask for my SIM pin, had no wifi and rebooted itself every few minutes.
Ended up wiping the phone and hacking the 1.21 WW full RUU ROM back onto the phone, then updating to the 2.09 OTA downloaded on the PC (via reboot > recovery > update.zip).

Help,
I upgraded my radio on my o2 exec from 1.4.02 to 1.6.0 just now.
using this link- ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Universal/Universal Radio Only Upgrade 1.06.00.rar
The first time it came up with country error code. I did have the sim and SD cards in.
Then I saw a link to an o2 exec version and ran that. All seemed ok when the Universal rebooted and gave me the serial pages.
Now I cant go any futher and soft/hard reset does not work. Also tried siver power button/backlight button/reset and that does not work.
Has it passed on or can I recover it?
John
there is a thread round here somewhere about recovering that, have a search, i cant remember the titlename now, but it was a while ago the fix was discovered
Thanks Carvivor,
I dived in (as is my want) and found some threads which helped.
In the end I managed to do a hard reset and 0.
Then I installed the latest rom 1.13.188 and am now trying the 1.6.0 radio again. (Glutten for punishment)
I will back up the 1Gb SD card at home and see what need installing again. I assume all apps. (iLauncher, pocketbreeze and lots more) even though most apps are installed on the SD. I also assume most apps have reg entries which will now be gone?
I hope at least the config files can be copied back over. Maybe the two apps configs above can be restored after re-installation.
I have also put on Novii remote which is very good and took me over a day to config in WS mode. I hope the configs are on the SD.
I want corporate mode back and I think its 0506?

Lingering EVO issues (SD Card, Camera, etc.)

I'm having some lingering issues with my EVO even after running OTA updates. I am running a rooted stock ROM, currently software version 1.32.651.6 (I have not attempted the latest OTA update yet).
In particular are two problems - SD card issues have remained even after the OTA update. This was present even before rooting but after installing the first update (I went to a "full-service" store on opening day and they set it up themselves, assuming everyone would want it - luckily I could still get root). Issues include the Camera application reporting permissions problems randomly when trying to save pictures to the SD card, HTC's music application freaking out and coming to a near freeze trying to crawl the SD card during one of its troublesome spurts, and files disappearing from file explorers. So basically run of the mill, pre-first-OTA sd card problems. But occurring after the update and both before/after rooting.
Second is a problem with the camera itself. When first booting, HTC's included photo/video application will instantly crash after showing the camera icon on the black background. Google Goggles freezes for about 10 seconds then reports it was unable to connect to the camera. After the phone being on for about half an hour, these issues (seemingly) go away until the next reboot.
Last, and least frequent but still troubling, is a problem with the device powering on. At least twice I have been unable to get the device to turn on after powering it off, forcing a pull and replace of the battery to get it working again.
As far as I know, all of these issues could be either hardware or software. Even the power problem - my best guess is that the phone never powers off fully, but is instead locked inside of a deep sleep state and thus can not turn on until a battery pull forces the entire system off.
The questions being - first, are there any known solutions to the above problems? I have found many threads in particular regarding SD card issues, but none that seem to report these problems post-update. The others I have seen little to nothing about.
Second - if there are not known solutions, would it be prudent to return the phone as it may likely be a hardware problem?
Since it seems I'm forced to take the last update if I get a replacement, I may likely have problems getting a full root back. I'd like to avoid that if possible - having root works wonders for doing application development using non-native (unexposed) API's (Which - side note - since I'm developing for 2.1 at the moment, other than hacking for direct access to a Surface, does anyone know of a _fast_ way to do direct blits from native code? glTexImage2d is insanely slow).
Thanks all any help. Again, apologize if any of these are solved and gone problems, but I wasn't able to procure anything myself.
I'd go for the replacement, sounds like a defective unit..
Be sure that the folks here at xda will get root working regardless of OTA.
replace the unit, i'm very particular about my phones, if there is anything wrong with it I replace it.
I too have the SD card issue, I have updated, i have rooted, re-rooted, flashed new rom, different roms (fresh and sd) and it has always given me the sd card issue. Sometimes it wants to be a pain and not work at all, sometimes its good for at least a week or two. I am waiting for a little longer to make sure when I get a replacement its a newer version.
SD card permission errors --- POSSIBLE FIX
I hope/think/believe I fixed this error for those interested, I use my EVO for work and need it to work without a hitch....
Here goes (**Note i am a noob with smartphones with a dangerous amount of IT knowledge - disclaimer for those brave enough to browse around the root files and SD card files; I am not responsible for you bricking your phone, I am only trying to help those in need and putting in my 2 cents_)
Download and open the app ---> Root Explorer (or any other root explorer for that matter) from Android market.
Once Root Explorer is open (look up top/left it will say) Mounted as r/o (means read only) - press the white button to mount it as r/w (read & write)
Press and long hold on the SD card directory (folder) - you will get another window from which you must select the permissions option.
Under top option USER - check all marks -- READ WRITE AND EXECUTE & click OK.
VERY IMPORTANT - Click on the (white button) Mount as r/o to write protect your root files on your phone again.
I just applied this fix about 45 mins ago and seems to be working......updates to come if issues persist or re-surface. (**Note I could not see photos or play music and some apps were also giving me FCs (intermittently) due to permission or write errors to SD card; and now it seems to be working like nothing ever happened.)
What I have ::: stock ROM on EVO supersonic with recent HTC updates applied - standard 8Gig SD card provided with phone / had rooted but put back stock ROM for preference issues.
Hope this info helps some folks...very frustrating issue.
Cheers
SD card permission errors --- POSSIBLE FIX
ONE LAST SIDENOTE COMMENT -
I transfer data to my PC often (running Win 7 32bit_)
It is crucial that you right click on "safely remove hardware" icon on the lower right side (next to date and time) and WAIT until windows tells you
..."It is now safe to remove your hardware" --- I was just taking the plug out when done and it appears as if that could have started or compounded these issues with the SD card.
I too get the could not connect problems at times. And I have lost access to the SD card a few times. Some say its Fring that causes the problem. But after removing it I still have camera issues. I noticed that having the LED Light on while trying to open the camera will cause this problem.
I am running CM6 RC1 so this is to be expected from Release Candidates. Sit tight. It will get fixed.
Well after a full 24 hrs...no issues with the read write error on my EVO SD card, I think that when the phone is removed from PC incorrectly (i.e. pulling USB cable out in mode other than "Charge only" i.e. HTC sync, Disk Drive, Internet sharing - it causes it to "corrupt" the permissions on the SD card - It is still working like a champ and i am waiting impatiently for my EVO Froyo update ... feedback appreciated for those whom tried this fix and had it work....txs
@LF142
Hi there. So I followed all of your instructions above and downloaded Root Explorer. However, every time I change the permissions, they don't save. User, Group and Other is always switched off at root level. Do you think this may mean my SD card is corrupted?
I rooted it with BakedSnack.
I now want to un-root it as I miss taking shots, looking at my shots, listening to my tunes etc.
But I want to keep all my apps. All my texts and everything else. Whats the best way to go about this? I am also a bit of a n00b and I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, but when Froyo releases tomorrow (apparently) do I have to unroot to receive the update?
Thanks

App installer not working after root PLEASE HELP!!!

Hello Everyone!
I just rooted using UnRevoked 3.0. I was installing apps on to sd card and suddenly (while installing free spades from Market) the phone just sat there at "Installing spades" and never completed. Even worse now NOTHING installs. Not even the OTA Sprint voice mail upgrade app. What I did notice is that I can't format the SD card, the option button is grayed out. When I try to unmount the card I get this error:
"Sorry! Activity SD & phone storage (in Application Settings) is not responding."
I have the option to FC or wait and if I try and wait, the message just loops. Is there ANYTHING ANYONE can tell me about this. Please, please help!!!!
Try restarting the phone and see if that helps.
restarting doesn't work, re-running Unrevoked doesn't work. I don't know what else to do. Am I just app-less now?
It happens. Sometimes it takes a few hours to go back to normal, at least in my experience. Is it working for you yet?

I encountered a problem similar to this with my Evo. Basically the card stopped working and said I need to format it, but then it wouldn't let me actually format it. I contacted HTC and apparently they had a "bad batch" of the cards and they'll replace it for free, when they have some in stock. My advice would be to contact HTC or Sprint.
Not working yet. But one thing I forgot about is that after I rooted it I also installed "Choose install" from the Market and set the default to the storage card. I wonder if I should try and unroot my phone. I'm stuck there to because if I understand things right I would have to access my sd card to load a new zip file on it in order to unroot. My pc will no longer let me browse my device.

Thanks for the tip. That could be why I can no longer browse the device from my pc. I will give that a shot. Thanks!

You will need access to an SD card to unroot. My advice would be to either buy another one or just borrow a friend's or something. Why do you want to unroot anyways?

I don't really want to, I just thought I would have to do that to try and go back to "stock" or if I'm using the word right, back to the way it was when I got it. I thought it might be my last resort to fixing it. I would still re-root again so I can try and figure out how to get rid of all of sprints bloatware.
Just an update - I bought me a new sd card from buy.com, a 16 gb for about $30. It fixed the problem for a little bit. I started installing my apps, got a good amount of them on there and it happened again! I'm starting to wonder if you just can't install very many apps for this phone or by some odd coincidence I got a 2nd bad storage card????. Weird. I might start a new thread for this but thanks for all you who participated. You rock!
when it's stuck on install can you go to your manage applications option in settings and see if they're all stuck on 'computing' too?
Because this sounds all too familiar.

I have the same issue (seems to have started after I started using modinstallocation). About one in ten times I'm able to get my sd card apps back after battery pulls and multiple reboots, but not this time. When I go to manage apps, all the SD card apps are 'computing'.

i got mine all back today. I wiped the Dalvic cache from clockwork mod, and everything came back after a reboot about 5 minutes later.

help please applications constantly "computing"

in manage applications all apps are stuck at "computing" and will of stop. It used to be fixed by restoring my phone to an earlier date but now it just doesn't work.
Apps2sd, disk usage, and unmounting the SD card do not work. Force closing.
In the market I cannot install or uninstall apps.
And when I restart ill lose access to the apps on my SD card. But I can access all info using a task manager or taking the card out and accessing it from my pc.
Is my internal memory failing?
I don't know what else to do Ive tried so much.
Restore backup factory reset SD card format etc.
Froyo 2.2 stock rooted.
Any ideas?,I'm desperate.
Thank you.
Wipe completely and try a different ROM like CM6. If you're still getting the same problem, then it's a hardware issue and you're hosed. Run the RUU at that point, and take it in to get a replacement, and hope for the best.
How long do you give it? If you have a lot of apps, it might just take a lot longer than your are expecting, since it has to load the data for everything. I'd recommend just giving it a little more time (unless you already do). Before Froyo, even with just a handful of apps it seriously took around 3 minutes to load that kind of information.
I've given it up to 45 minutes at times, several times after a recovery it would all fully finish computing, then after i install an app or something to that effect it seems it 'breaks' again.
I tried other ROMs and after the first few apps i begin to reinstall it does it again. So i took a break, recovered it and went to bed. This morning it seems to be doing fine and now i'm reading there were market issues with other people last night, could this be connected? Is the market that integrated into the phone that it could cause issues like this?
i'm emailing HTC for some advice because i can't find a specific google/android technical support email address about the issue.
ii'm in the same boat.all my apps are stuck on computing. i cant even unistall, or move apps. the only positive is that i can still run all my apps. but i cant install anything new as it stays stuck on installing and never installs the app. this seems like a problem with froyo.
Mine does this ever since I installed modInstallLocation, and moved a ton of stuff over to the SD card. If I ever have to reboot for some reason, or if I have to use the phone as a USB device, most of the time the apps never recover. Sometimes (rarely) a reboot fixes it, but most of the time I have to pull the battery, pull the card, reboot several times before it will finally get all my apps back. It seems completely random. I can't uninstall or install anything either until everything is back to normal. It happened again last night, and I still haven't gotten it to recover. I let the thing "compute" all night (7 hours) with no luck.
btw, this is my second sd card, so I don't think its bad.
UPDATE: I got them all back! I wiped the Dalvik cache from within Clockwork Mod, and about 4-5 minutes after I rebooted, there they were!!!

[Q] Can No longer connect to any APN

I have a brand new issue that, for the first time, I haven't been able to resolve from existing posts on the forum.
When Cyanogen nightly build 92 first came out I loaded it on my phone and everything had been working flawless. Yesterday I swapped my SD card for a another one, something I do with regularity and have never had trouble. Afterward, the phone wouldn't boot.(black screen) I swapped back and still nothing. I removed the SD card entirely and installed another SIM from my G1. Although, it would not boot into the phone I was finally able to boot into CW, so I reset all caches, reformatted boot, system and data. Reinstalled build 92. About halfway through the reinstall the phone suddenly rebooted. I started over again, wiping cache, reformatting and reinstalling to build 92. (I double checked md5sum just in case the file was corrupt) This time it installed perfectly and I was able to reboot the phone back to what appeared to be normal.
Now everything appears to work fine except for one very serious flaw. I can no longer connect to an APN. I can search networks and see them but when I select one it says cannot register on network. If I connect to WiFi the "WiFi calling feature works fine and all seems normal. I did a little research and was told to check my IMEI. Sure enough it is 111111111111111 which is obviously invalid. I have no idea if the Invalid IMEI is a symptom of another problem or the cause.
Just for grins, I borrowed a friends AT&T Sim to see what would happen.( I recently updated to the gfree .05 for full unlock) There was no difference except of course, AT&T doesn't support T-mobile's WiFi Calling.
So here is where I stand so far:
Original SIM is fried so have a new one
Invalid IMEI but I have my original logged
WiFi Calling allows me to operate the phone normally but I can't go anywhere this way.
I have all of my CW backups and have tried them to no avail.
The swap of my SD Card is normal for me. When I travel I use an encrypted card for all of my data. (A slightly paranoid industry, {Corporate Intelligence} but hey, I get to use calling encryption)
I never store apps on my SD card and always select Internal as my installation location, not that it should cause a problem anyway.
I have been actively using and updating my phones since Jesus Freke started on 1.5 on the G1, so I am not afraid to get creative.
Any suggestion or direction at this point would be greatly appreciated.
