[Q] Stupid noob question - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've finally had it with my Tilt2 bluetooth issues and am going to drop AT&T and pick up Sprint so I can have the EVO. I've read through both the Q&A section as well as the Themes & Apps section ... not entirely, mind you; just scanned. Anyway, I'm seeing a bunch of themes and widgets that are really cool. Is adding them an easy thing to do ... or does it require a little more labor of love (rooting, flashing a new rom, etc. --- all of which I know nothing about)?
Much thanks in advance and apologies if this has already been covered and I just didn't come across the thread.

pretty simple
You just need to do it in this order
ROOT(lots of simple guides)
Flash ROM (most ROMs comes with intructions on how to flash and load wimax and radio)
Custom Kernel (optional but allows you to over/underclock)
Theme(Flash just like the ROM)
Install custom widgets, backgrounds, bootscreens, ect

I am so not literate enough to know what I do or don't like about the stock EVO ROM yet to even ponder flashing a new/different ROM ... hell, I don't even have the phone yet (hopefully going to pick it up tonight) .. lol.
Do I need to ROOT to do add a new theme or some widgets? Or is it as easy as downloading them to my sdcard and installing them?

widgets no unless they only work on a custom rom but themes it depends on what they used to make it.

Thanks. I'm seeing that HTC is going to be coming out with 2.2 later this year. Are there that many bugs with 2.1 .... should I wait until 2.2 is stock/out of the box?

I would def play around with stock at first but if you want themes, better control of battery, performance, and fpscap removed then you would want to look into getting a rom.
2.2 is already out

Is this a trick question? 2.2 is out.

Thanks for the insight.
Hey, another question ..... what's up with google contacts synching with the phone? I use yahoo ... am I out of luck with that and am destined to spend the next couple days reinputting my contacts?

Haven't used it, but yahoo contacts are supposed to be able to sync as well.

I didn't think the 2.2 that was out was the "official" one issued from HTC ... rather the pre-released version so people, like the ones here on xda, could test and tweek it before it got released to the general user population. Does that make sense?

it was released on Monday ota.

yep 2.2 is out and yahoo will work but its not a default install on android since google is android. before you get rid of your old phone see if you can download google sync and sync your phone with a gmail account and then when you get your new phone you will sign in with the gmail and bam your contacts will be there.
Yes android phones during setup require you to have a gmail account.

Well, technically Sense phone's don't require a Google account, though you will need it to use the Market. Definitely recommend importing your contacts and calendars to Google and using it as your default, as its more integrated with Android.

Ugh, converting contacts from Yahoo to Google sucked, only about 1/4 of the contacts actually came over and of those that did they were missing info. It was a lot less painful, and everything came over into Google (notes, addresses, etc.), by saving my contacts from my phone as a csv via AT&T Mobile Contacts and then importing the csv into Google. It was worth the $1.99 I'll get charged from AT&T just so I wouldn't have to retype all 200 contacts info! Not sure if I'm going to keep my gmail account once I get my contacts loaded back onto the EVO ... have had my yahoo account for so long, it could be a pain to convert everyone over to a new email addy.
I'll hopefully be picking up my new EVO tomorrow morning, stopped on my way home from work and they were sold out ..... was told to come back first thing tomorrow morning so that's what I'm gonna do -- it is convenient that I have off work tomorrow .. lol.
Can't wait to play with the EVO!!!!

2.2 is OUT
Developers got a pre-release this past weekend. Then Sprint pushed 2.2 out late on the 2nd or early the 3rd of Aug. Hope this helps!
I say this from reading posts on several BBs.

yea i agree the google sync for contacts is pretty pathetic i do not get why your addresses go to notes. all google has to do is add the same fields on there website and presto. you would think android and google would work in harmony but nopes

Didn't see this mentioned already.....unless I overlooked it.
The 1st thing the Sprint rep will do is update it. If you plan on rooting. DON"T LET THEM!!!! Tell them before they open the box that you don't want it updated. The second you install 2.2, your rooting plans are on hold....till they figure out how to root 2.2. You can install a rooted version of 2.2 after you root it.

Facebook Contact Problems

Well, I know about 95% of the questions at the moment are going to involve the new Froyo OTA question, so if someone can answer this I'd appreciate it lots.
Basically.. I installed the new Facebook app from the Market, and I synced my contacts (maybe it happened before that, I don't really know) but for some reason, it's come up with over 1700 contacts.. All the same people, just with lots saying "com.facebook.auth.login" when I go in to a specific contact.. For example, I've synced most of my contacts with Google aswell, which looks like the image I've uploaded..
But why is there 4x com.facebook.auth.login there? There really shouldn't be 1.. And is there any way to get rid of them?
Dan
i've got the same issue except some contacts just show 1 com.auth.... where as some others have over 8! this is on a desire by the way with the new 2.2 OTA update
I had the exact same problem. It's a conflict between the Facebook for Android and Facebook for HTC Sense apps. Seeing that I could only get rid of the FB for Android, that's what I did and now all my contacts are fine.
Is there any way to ditch the FB for HTC Sense? I don't want it, the Android app is much nicer looking and probably works better, too.

New Gmail app on the market?

Whats up with the new gmail app on the market? After checking the version number I have an olderversion. Why isnt my current version asking me to update? I probably wouldnt have even noticed but I went to my downloads and it showed up as a free app as if I didnt have it. So thats when I started investigating.
Anyway its got me all confused lol. Should I just uninstall my current google app and then just go download that app? I cant see how it would hurt, but Ill wait to see what you smart guys say.
I noticed the same thing today, current version of gmail on my phone is 2.2.1, and the one in the market is 2.3(also did not show up in market as an update, just install). I updated just fine and everything works good. I think the market won't show an app as updatable, unless you install it from the market and since gmail came with the phone, and not from the market the market will just show the option to install.
I don't remember seeing gmail being in the market in the past, this must be another step towards googles much talked about push for making core google apps a part of the market instead of being shipped on the phone. Makes more sense that way anyways.
I remember reading something that mobile gmail would be getting the new priority inbox like the regular gmail site has. Maybe this is the reason for the update
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
the quoted text is handled much better now. I can actually click on a link now that a get from a subscribed thread on xda. I used to have to go back to the first mail in the conversation.
also, i noticed a green bar that drops down after you delete a msg that also lets you undo. it's a pretty sweet update actually.
The gmail update was for some small bug fixes and to add multiple gmail account sync
So do I just installit over the old or uninstall and then install the new one freshly?

Just install the new one over top. Really easy.
The new Gmail app has the buttons at the top scroll down with you, making it easier to star, reply, reply to all, etc. It has some other bug fixes, and there is limited Priority Inbox support, in the form of a new "Important" label, that takes you to your important messages.
Here's a link to the blog post: http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2010/09/updated-gmail-app-in-android-market.html
This update came out yesterday, and is the first time Gmail has been updated in the market. This will be how updates will work from now on, just like the Maps app before it.

[Q] Toro Facebook Integration

Do most ROMs out now include the native Facebook integration that was missing from the OTA? I understand JB won't until source is out.
I'm currently running LiquidSmooth and want to try something else, but for me Facebook integration is make it or break it for having contacts shared. I use HaxSync for pictures.
I don't see it listed as a feature on many ROMs I've looked at recently. Is this just a given that it's included now (have been out of the game for a few months) or am I really limited to only a couple ROMs with this?
Thanks!
It was my understanding that the reason why the integration broke was because Google changed their API's and required Facebook to recode their app to allow this... or something like that.
I too was on Liquid and now running JB. I don't see a mention of facebook anywhere (I also don't have it installed). I'm pretty sure that when you install facebook now, it will ask to sync your contacts.
Do a Nandroid backup, SuperWipe, and flash V3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=1738018
Check it out, play around, and worse case you can always restore your backup.

If by native facebook integration...
You mean the hack that allowed facebook contacts to sync via Facebook...
AOKP removed this in...Build 34ish.
I don't remember exactly when.
But it's a security risk, supposedly.
And also broke a couple of apps...the names of which are escaping me.
Personally, I didn't mind losing it...as Haxsync always served me well.
The only problem being that Facebook doesn't publicly release the API's to sync phone numbers...so Haxsync can't do that part.

i think picasa was one of the apps that broke.
basically facebook doesnt want to play ball with google's changes, so facebook integration has been broken since gingerbread. the only way it was working is from the custom roms that hack the sync to work. it worked, but kinda poorly.
haxsync works fine for me as well.
It's a shame they don't play along.
Like you said, make a backup and flash away. See what I end up liking and go from there. Thanks!

[Q] Updating stock email to 4.4.2.0400??

Greetings all!
Just purchased the tab pro 10.1. It's incredible. My only gripe, which is not a huge issue but enough to drive me crazy that I haven't yet discovered an easy "fix" for it, is that the stock email app--which I really like given that it mirrors the email app on my SG5--is at version 4.1. On my SG5, the email version is 4.4.2.0400. I'm puzzled as to why the tab pro, after all updates are done, hasn't updated to this newest version. Primarily, I want to be able to a) use the stock email app; b) swipe away emails rather than check a box to delete them.
My device is not rooted nor do I plan on rooting. I've done some digging around online but haven't found an easy way to remedy this. I assume I could just install the SG5 stock email app? But I haven't found the apk online, without the need to edit a bunch of other stuff that is beyond my expertise.
Would there be an easy fix for this? Perhaps just an apk of the SG5 email app I can install over top of this (no flashing, etc)?
Many thanks in advance!

Email Client

Regular person here guys. Shouldn't even be on this forum. You guys are way too advanced for me. But i know just enough to be dangerous. And your the only ones that could help me with this.
I need a regular e-mail client. Just like the stock ones on all my LG's (2,3,4,5). And like all my old HTC phones. All the ones in the app store don't cut it for me. Either missing something or just not right. Mine is a business phone and the stock e-mail i get on all my skinned phones seem to be the best (for what i need). they are basic, simple, clean and just work!!! have notifications without downloading some other app to tell when you get a new e-mail. P.S. I use exchange. Don't like G-mail client for my work account. And don't want to mix my g-mail with work account either. I get over 250 per day.
is there anyway to get one of them? can i get a LG apk and use it on the Pixel? or is theirs themed for their skin? Doesn't have to be LG either. the Sammy one was good and Motorola & HTC also. is it possible or not a chance? Again i would need it to be as easy as downloading a APK. I can't do any of the ADB shell(or whatever it's called)
thanks in advance
I have tried almost all the store ones(just saving you time on telling my to use touchdown or something similar). They are all missing some feature or something that the stock ones I usually use have.
Have you tried Aquamail? I've found it to be better than any of the stock email apps.
there are a handful of great 3rd party Exchange email apps you can use. I would Google some of them and try them out to see which suits you best.
Outlook might be good, K9 I have used in the past. I ended up using Gmail and getting used to it for my Pixel.
If not, I found a link to the Samsung email APK here:

I'll tell you this Ant. I don't have my phone yet but co-worker does. I got it for him. So it's basically mine when ever i need to do something on it.
Just loaded Alto and it looks good. Real good!!!! Just like a stock skinned type e-mail client. Waiting to test badge count and everything else. But this is definitely the cleanest client I have seen(yes their boring but that's what I need for work).
No badge count yet but nine took a few hours for everything to start working and to get a count..
thanks!!!!

If your using the Pixel launcher you won't get a badge count with any app. If your using Nova then you need to have Tesla unread installed from the play store and then turn Alto on in the settings.
Nine got it. Worked perfect actually. Every e-mail had a count. He just wants to get rid of it now because it's asking him to pay all of a sudden. Me personally have no problem paying. I just don't love the looks of Nine
Have you tried the Blackberry Hub? It's more than an email client (and the subscription includes more apps), but I've found it a really clean and easy app to use. It fixes my biggest gripe about GMail (i.e. threaded emails when using Gmail accounts).
Try Nine. I was addicted to the stock one as well until I used nine.
TypeApp, formerly known as Blue Mail.
I've tried a couple dozen over the years and this is the one I've liked the best.
Push, themes, tons of customization, free.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.trtf.blue
It might be a little too fancy/customizable for you though?

We just tried that one and not for me. All of these are like the ones I already tried. they all do something but not all thing I need. and please don't take this as an insult. Thanks VERY much for helping
Nine seems to be the closest. I get over 300 e-mails a day so I HAVE to have a badge count. Nine is the only one so far that does it. But even Nine isn't close to the skinned clients.
I just don't get it. Why can skin company's that we make fun of do perfect e-mail but not Google. Yes if i didn't have a job or was still a kid in high school G-mail would be fine. But it sucks for business(especially because of that stupid conversation type threading). But why doesn't Google allow for badge count. Everyone wants that. I've never heard of a person saying they don't. Nor is there a reason to not want it on everything that needs one(Text, e-mail, voicemail). Google is a business. I just can't figure this part out. Wake up google. I can't remember what I used back in my Gnex days(last time i had a pure android phone). but whatever it was i liked it.
i just don't get it!!!!! but i'll adapt and get over it. So far Nine seems to be the most professional.
