[Q] Toro Facebook Integration - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Do most ROMs out now include the native Facebook integration that was missing from the OTA? I understand JB won't until source is out.
I'm currently running LiquidSmooth and want to try something else, but for me Facebook integration is make it or break it for having contacts shared. I use HaxSync for pictures.
I don't see it listed as a feature on many ROMs I've looked at recently. Is this just a given that it's included now (have been out of the game for a few months) or am I really limited to only a couple ROMs with this?
Thanks!

It was my understanding that the reason why the integration broke was because Google changed their API's and required Facebook to recode their app to allow this... or something like that.
I too was on Liquid and now running JB. I don't see a mention of facebook anywhere (I also don't have it installed). I'm pretty sure that when you install facebook now, it will ask to sync your contacts.
Do a Nandroid backup, SuperWipe, and flash V3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=1738018
Check it out, play around, and worse case you can always restore your backup.

If by native facebook integration...
You mean the hack that allowed facebook contacts to sync via Facebook...
AOKP removed this in...Build 34ish.
I don't remember exactly when.
But it's a security risk, supposedly.
And also broke a couple of apps...the names of which are escaping me.
Personally, I didn't mind losing it...as Haxsync always served me well.
The only problem being that Facebook doesn't publicly release the API's to sync phone numbers...so Haxsync can't do that part.

i think picasa was one of the apps that broke.
basically facebook doesnt want to play ball with google's changes, so facebook integration has been broken since gingerbread. the only way it was working is from the custom roms that hack the sync to work. it worked, but kinda poorly.
haxsync works fine for me as well.

It's a shame they don't play along.
Like you said, make a backup and flash away. See what I end up liking and go from there. Thanks!

Facebook for Android (not sense fb) - sync to contacts

so i deleted friendstream and what not so i can't use the fb that's integrated into sense to update my contacts with fb.. is there any way to do this with the facebook for android app from the market? I remember on my moto droid I could, but it doesn't seem like I have that option int he people app on my DInc.. anyone?
bump.... anything? anyone?

you can try socialite, I think it is in the market, if not you can find it in the interwebs, that and htc sense are the only ways I know of to syn FB contacts.
I think that it has to do with the android version of FB available from the market using the INC. I agree that on my motoDroid I had no problems syncing contacts, and I can guarantee there was no sense running on that
There's some sort of bug... Facebook shows up in Accounts & sync when you click Add Account, but when you select it there's an error or two in logcat and you're kicked back a screen.
If you look at the app's permissions, it IS allowed to read/write contact data, as well as sync settings. It just doesn't work at the moment.
Has anyone managed to figure this out? I'm a bit OCD about my contact pictures :-(
im OCD too, which is why thats one area id never want removed, i understand its to cleanup the phone and all but maybe its better to keep things plugged in so that everything can work and then move on removing things systematically from there. I admit im no programmer at all so i dont know where to ever begin but mi just giving a basic train of thought that id follow.
Afaik, you need Friendstream and Facebook for sense to have contacts sync.
I had to install both again, with the obex for each, to get this working on a custom rom.
There are a couple of ways to sync fb contacts to google contacts, but I haven't tried any of them. Use google to find them. After that you can keep the pictures synced with an app called "syncmypix"

You shouldn't need Friendstream to sync contacts (see Moto Droid). The native Twitter app integrated just fine despite Peep being installed. The Facebook app is poorly written so it doesn't sync on the Droid Incredible. This might be because Friendstream is 'supposed' to do it, so native syncing is disabled? Editing build.prop and a few other files is necessary to create a friendly environment... but it'd be easier if Facebook just fixed their apk.
Syncmypix looks like a nice stop-gap for now though

if you just need contact pics from facebook..not updates or profiles linked...use facebook sync. its an app in the market, not affliliated with Facebook, so it works perfectly. used on my stock incredible and now on my 2.2 rom rooted incredible.

I Can't Add Facebook as an Account, Help

When I go into Accounts & Sync in the settings menu and try to add Facebook as an account, it doesn't work. I click to add facebook but it just returns me to the settings and never adds it. It works perfect for Twitter, LinkedIn, and other apps as well. Anyone else having this happen too? I've tried uninstalling and clearing all data, didn't work.

Same here. Don't think its setup for ICS yet
Facebook has not made an app that actually works with Android. Many companies, like HTC, have made apps for that by themselves. Facebook and Google are not on friendly terms when it comes to sharing contacts data, so this might not change anytime soon.
Doesn't that make the People Hub pointless then? All of my "real" friends are on Facebook, not Google+, Twitter, or LinkedIn so it doesn't sync any real info or high def pictures.

That's not entirely true. Facebook sync used to work with all Nexus devices but Google themselves pulled the sync due to them not allowing contacts to also be exported to Android devices. From Google:
http://techcrunch.com/2011/02/22/google-android-facebook-contacts/
“We believe it is very important that users are able to control their data. So in the over-the-air update for Nexus S, we have a small change to how Facebook contacts appear on the device. For Nexus S users who downloaded the Facebook app from Android Market, Facebook contacts will no longer appear to be integrated with the Android Contacts app. Since Facebook contacts cannot be exported from the device, the appearance of integration created a false sense of data portability. Facebook contact data will continue to appear within the Facebook app. Like all developers on Android, Facebook is free to use the Android contacts API to truly integrate contacts on the device, which would allow users to have more control over their data. We are removing the special-case handling of Facebook contacts on Nexus S and future lead devices. We continue to believe that reciprocity (the expectation that if information can be imported into a service it should be able to be exported) is an important step toward creating a world of true data liberation — and encourage other websites and app developers to allow users to export their contacts as well.”
They only stopped this feature on the Nexus line of phones and the reason Facebook sync still doesn't work is because Facebook has not made the necessary change yet that Twitter and the like have. Google however doesn't stop other OEMs from allowing Facebook to sync contacts though - I wish they would to light the fire under their ***** so I could get my contact photos back, but what can you do? They hate each other right now.

You could always start spamming Facebook to allow contact export so Google will let them sync again. I doubt they'll do it though.
The fact that any OEM can make this feature work again no matter what Google does kind of sucks when you only buy Nexus phones. I've gotten used to it not being there and I take a random candid picture of everyone I add to my contacts list now which works better in some situations since some of those FB profile pics don't give you any idea who the person actually is.

No they did not. The way Facebook synced before was a hack, they did not use Android contacts API the way others do and the way it is meant to. Google removed the hack.
Facebook does not want to share contact information with Android so that user 'owns' their data. They can always build their app the right way. Zuckerberg & Co just don't want to.

because it is called the People application, not the Facebook application.
Not everyone uses Facebook, as apathetically ubiquitous it may appear to be. Some people use Twitter. Some people use Google+. Either way, the point of it is that it links with multiple social networks. The Facebook application does not work properly with Android 4.0, and even if/when it does it is unlikely that Facebook will be allowed API access to the People application due to the fact that they do not make it simple to get at your contacts data. It's your prerogative if you want to blame Google or Facebook there, but the point I'm making is that the People application obviously has a point, since Facebook isn't the be-all-and-end-all of social networking.
So if i understand this right.
Google wont let facebook info sync. Because facebook wont let it fully sync and be backed up to gmail etc?
And this would mean all your friends facebook info would then be your property and not theirs (facebooks).

Google cannot stop anyone from syncing and using the API, this is open software. Facebook simply does not wish to implement that feature, since all contact data synced is accessible by other applications. The other thing is that Facebook does not wish to share friends email addresses.
It is entirely about Facebook not allowing user to do whatever they want with data shared with them by friends.
Basically, Facebook is afraid that if they allow people to export contact data, it will be very easy for everyone to just move all their friends to a new social network. Since Facebook only has one way of making money it's understandable that they want to make it as hard for us as possible to do that.
From Google's point of view, it's very exploitative of Facebook to expect to get special treatment on Android phones even though they refuse to play ball with Google, hence why their special privilege has now been removed.
Whose ever fault you think this is, it's us consumers who are made to suffer. -.-

Not backed up to GMail but backed up to the phone. If you delete your FB account and I only had you as a FB contact then you would completely disappear from my contact list, or if something happened and FB went down for a few hours or a few days I wouldn't be able to contact anyone who was synced only through FB. Most people only join existing contacts so they only suffer from not having the photo and status updates synced, but not allowing export could be much more problematic. It's not that it's your property, it's information you have access to that you have been given approval by those you have friended to have therefore you could just use what FB gives you and manually enter the contact yourself if you wanted to. Google is basically saying if that's the case you should be given the option to automatically export that entire list to your phone instead of having to manually enter all the information that FB is supplying you with.
This frustrates me also.. ever since they updted my nexus s and removed it. Its the only thing i will miss from htc sense. I know use contapps to sync facebook and its associatd contact photos

[Q] Facebok contacts sync

Hey all;
I just got my Galexy Nexus 2 days ago and love it so far. I just have 1 problem so far. I can not get my Facebook to sync with my contacts. I logged into Facebook and it doesn't even give me the option to set up sync. I also tried to go into accounts and add it in there. It will not add. I have cleared the cache and data from the Facebook ap and tried again and it still will not work.
Just wondering if it is even possible to sync my Facebook to my contacts. I am on Verizon running stock, non-rooted, 4.0.2.
Thanks in advance!

Actually facebook sync does work on some custom roms where the devs have edited some sourcefiles to reactivate it (tutorial on which 2 files need to be edited is somewhere in the forum). However, for Stock Roms, your answer is correct.

Google'll never fix this because they don't want this FB sync feature.
The work around here is using a Custom Rom or installing HaxSync, etc.
+1 for HaxSync!
Its true. Google disabled Facebook Sync on android. Instead they try to shove G+ down your throat. You can install hack sync, or Custom ROMS like AOKP. I have it and it works. But I have disabled facebook Sync because I hate searching my contacts and find 300 contacts with email adresses only.
the ICS contact book doesn't allow us to display only records with phone numbers. I think the emphasis on the people instead of phone contact. As a result, the ICS people app is very difficult to use.
It does, however, just allow you to show your Gmail address book so assuming you have contacts on there with numbers and they're linked to FB it'll just show contacts with numbers
If someone isn't on my Gmail contacts I hide them by only showing Gmail contacts - easy!

It doesn't work because GOOGLE dismantled the old social API. The new API is available in Android 4.0.3. Social stream API in Contacts Provider. IF/when your carrier (Verizon, in my case) certifies the update for release is the problem. LinkedIn and Twitter contacts also will not sync because of this problem. It isn't just Facebook. Overall, this is a problem born out of Google looking to own the contacts sync and rid Android of those crapapps that do a piss poor job of synching. But Facebook will need to update the Android app when Android 4.0.3 is certified and released for a commercially available carrier-certified device. At this point. Out-of-the-box social contact synching is a no go on Android ICS except for Google+. How convenient. Otherwise, you'll need an extra app for that social app.

Technically, the onus is still on Facebook and Twitter to update their existing apps for Android 4.0.2 since there is a social API still included. Something didn't translate right with Android 4.0.2 for the current versions of those apps.

Syncing facebook

So I have only just got around to rooting my GN and curious how easy it is to get Facebook sync working again. After looking around I see lots of custom roms that I can install to make it work but I wanted to keep everything stock. There is some ROMS have added the facebook sync back into the ROM. AOKP has the FaceBook Sync buil into the ROM, so once you install FB it gives you the option to sync contacts.
However, I like HaxSync, yes it is not the "FB" logo, but it syncs higher quality pictures, status updates, and it merges FaceBook and Google contacts, better than the built in sync. Makes it work like Google+ with the updates and like HTC sense with merging contacts.

It's not just Facebook. Twitter and LinkedIn contacts don't sync either (hell, LinkedIn quit working overall). Google needs to officially spit out that 4.0.3 update and the developers of those apps need to code for the new social API that is required to plug into the People app. Read more here: Android 4.0.3 Platform: Social stream API in Contacts Provider.

[Q] Facebook contact sync through Facebook Home app?

Facebook home isn't available on the gnex.
I can sideload the apk (with a bit of tinkering) according to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232198&page=5
A shame it doesn't work for this purpose, though...I've read about haxsync and it's not a problem that it costs a buck, but it just looks unclean, unofficial, etc. I would like to sync between Facebook and Google via at least Facebook if Google is being a douche, not some 3rd party.
I guess the only way this would be resolved officially is if Facebook came out with a People app replacement...which it might yet do, but so far no go.
Thanks!
I have used haxsync for 2 yrs an recommend it, I only got it to sync Facebook contact photos to native phone app contacts originally.
Most likely I will also use either it or this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.contapps.android - looks very decent as a full People+Dialer replacement app

Google is not being a douche here, Android has an open API allowing any app developer to sync stuff with contacts. Facebook just never updated their horribly outdated app to take advantage of this.(the API was released 2 Years ago)
So no it would not require facebook to release a people app but simply to update their existing app.
This is exactly what the third party apps does, and they work fine BTW. Since they run entirely in the background it doesn't matter that they look unofficial, I never see the app itself. So there is no need to use a replacement for the people app.
Never did understand why more didn't follow HTC's contact sync set up. So simple, intuitive and seamless.
Hey, we see you have 4 John Smiths.. under FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, and your main contacts.. shall we merge? Voila, done. And you get to use their FB photo as the default.
Why they wouldn't make contact integration easier is beyond me..

It's simple, just because facebook is large doesn't mean they get preferential treatment(like on ios, where only twitter and facebook is integrated). On android any app can do this(facebook included), but it is required for the app itself to do the sync of the contacts.

But why not allow that as an option at the Android OS level to allow permission is what I don't get. The FB android app also hasn't synced my contacts in forever (to include photo).

Please read my previous post! It is allowed... Any developer can add sync options(this is exactly what the thirdparties like haxsync does). The reason your facebook app sync doesn't work is, that they hacked in a solution that worked on 2.2 and earlier versions of android, but as the official api was introduced, and facebook was breaking the rules, this exploit was removed, and facebook just hasn't updated to use the official api.
read about the official api here: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/providers/contacts-provider.html
What HTC and others does is, that they either hack in the old exploit allowing the facebook app to sync again or they simply write their own app which uses the official api to sync fb contacts and pics.(this is identical to downloading an app like haxsync).
I ended up installing Contacts+ and am quite happy with it...
