Guys, My Desire is a standard Voda unlocked one, unrooted and I have thankfully NOT downloaded the latest bloatware from VF. I'm going to the USA and Canada this weekend and I want to know if:
1. It's possible that I may offered the chance to update to 2.2 when I'm on an overseas network (using wifi)
2. Should I do it if the offer is there - is there any risk of the phone not working with VF when I get back to the UK?
Root your phone using UnrEVOked, and then apply a rooted 2.2 update manually.
Given that the new hboot from the OTA is currently unrootable, it will give you so many more options down the line.
Regards,
Dave
I don't really want to root to be honest. I'd like to try and stay with all the official updates as I don't feel comfortable doing this to my phone in case I screw it up!
Anyone help with the original question?

Hi All
My desire's current software version is 1.15.405.4 but I've read that HTC released a 1.21 version earlier this year. However, when I tell the phone to check for updates it always says it's up to date and a newer version is not available.
Is this right? Thanks for your time in advance.
Greg
What carrier are you on? I know for certain Orange UK haven't released it due to them not adding their crapware branding yet.
I'm on T-mo, I know they released then pulled the 1.21 update and I missed it. Is there any other way of getting it other than de-branding?
Just use the ruu file at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667 If you want the t-mobile version use RUU_Bravo_TMO_UK_1.21.110.4_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.0 6.00.02_2_release_127570_signed.exe
The phone has a virgin logo on startup but it seems to be the stock ROM. The sim card is on t mobile. Does that mean I need the t mobile Rom I guess or the virgin one?
Were these any significant updates in the 1.21 release?
Many thanks.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I'm on 1.21.405.2, had it for months...download and install this:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
Happy days!!
Don't use the virgin one, or you wont be able to root your phone if you want. I would install RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe (like EddyOS suggested) instead.
Awesome. Thanks guys. Anyone know exactly what updates are in 1.21? Just wondering if it's worth waiting for 2.2 instead.
Also do I NEED to root it to install the RUU ROM?
Thanks guys. Greg
No, but if your phone is branded, you need gold card
guys, am just gonna try to take benefit from this thread, instead of making another one up, and i really hate seeing lots of threads with the same topic
ok, i have an unbranded device, so which shipped rom am i supposed to use?
Use RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
if i debrand my uk tmobile desire with a goldcard and a 1.21etc ruu, will it network lock me?
hearing conflicting reports on this.
just going to debrand today if possible, so i can get OTA 2.2. not interested in custom roms or root at all.
I just debranded my T-Mobile Desire with RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.
No problems. Should have backed up my settings and data, because installing the ROM will clear everything, but it's worth it just to get 2.2.
After that froyo showed up when pressing check for updates.
I debranded my phone from orange.
My network got locked. However, I just need to pay 7.99 GBP to buy a code from an Ebayer and I got the phone unlocked in 5 mins.
So i think it is not a problem to debrand.
Are you guys able to upgrade to FroYo now? I'll be debranding and installing a debranded 2.1 when I get home.

Yes. Already installed and using it now! =D
Hi everyone,
as can be seen in the title I got a branded Desire although i bought it as unbranded.
Long story short: I am now undecided what to do and it depends on the following:
So after hours of reading I am still not sure if it is possible and safe to completely remove the branding and have a permanently unbranded desire with official european rom and radio with which I can receive further updates from google/htc OTA at no risk AS IF I HAD BOUGHT AN UNBRANDED ONE. (I am not interested in custom roms etc since I have that with an earlier htc winmo device and ended up with backupping, restoring, flashing every second day and it costs me a lot of time)
The warranty is not so much an issue. But as far as I know I can completely revert the debranding process through nandroid... (?)
I would really appreciate any answers to wether it is possible to turn my desire into a "official/original" unbranded one.
Thx

Yes. Root & apply a stock (rooted) ROM. Problem solved. But if you accept any OTA update, you lose root.
You don't have to root but then you'll not be able to go back unless you can find the ROM that's on your device. Just make a goldcard and flash with a WWE or Europe ROM.
Thx for the answers.
A few more questions came up for both methods though.
in general:
where can i find a pure stock rom? in the wiki there is only a link to a 1.15 one.
for johnstevedoe's method:
loosing root is no problem since i dont need it. as i said i want to use it like a stock one and be able to recieve updates without having to wipe the phone.
i cant remember where but i read that ppl who had branded desires (i think orange) and used the ota update got further problems with their wifi etc. so it seems that there is still provider specific software (or hardware??) in the phone and it is therefore not behaving like a unbranded one. i guess if i dont encounter problems with the 2.2 update i might get some with future updates.
for steve228uk method:
do ihave to leave the gold card in the phone?
do i have to put it in for the ota updates?
and lastly, is there any resource for the original shipped branded roms? the xda wiki only links to one unbranded stock rom.
Thx for ur help
Dizzel
There was shippedroms.com but HTC asked the guy not to release the ROMs. You only need the one update: WWE 1.21 or 1.15 and then OTA up to 2.2 Froyo. You don't have to leave the goldcard in there but it's definitely safer if you shove it in for OTA updates as some people have had issues when they hadn't used it.

so that means that it is not possible to fully debrand with this method in some cases?
do you know anything about the method using unrevoked? is this capable of turning the desire into a unbranded one since it replaces the whole rom and parts of the boot etc. how can there still occur problems with ota when all branded software was replaced?
cheers
I've just bought a brand new desire on an O2 contract, which of course means it was locked to O2 only. I've now unlocked it and am using my Voda SIM card in it which is working perfectly.
However, today I read that Vodaphone relased the 2.2 OTA update, but when I try to check for updates it says my phones software is up to date.
Does this mean I need to put the official Vodaphone ROM on to allow me to update to 2.2? I'm a bit put off about rooting my device though, as I've got the 0.83 bootloader and I'm pretty sure it's a SLCD screen, which I've heard can have a few issues if putting new ROM's onto.
Cheers for any advice,
You are running branded O2 software, so you will not get Vodafone's update. You need to wait for O2 to release an update, or debrand and run stock 2.2.
OK, cheers mate

or debrand, root flash a stock 2.1, unroot and update OTA to 2.2
hope this helps! good Luck!
If I just want to load the stock european froyo image into my Telus Desire, will it be any different from the one that will be released here later this year? I'm not worried about loading the.93 boot loader as I'm not interested in rooting the phone.
Or will I be better off waiting for the official for Telus?
hi, personally i will recommend you wait. my reasons as follows:
1)you're radio may be different.
2)telus might void your warranty as its not a firmware they have released.
just curious if you know what frequencies does you're desire run.
i remember when rogers released their own radio for their version of the G1 and anyone without that radio would have no data connection allowed. (not trying to scare you)
if you cant wait maybe rooting is an option as you can apply different radio's and still keep the the "stock" but rooted version of the official froyo rom
if you're intrested (download)
full article can be found here at Modaco
if you do go down the root method in the end (i know you mentioned you dont want to)
do a back up (nandroid) so you can always revert back to you're telus version and if you want go to their official release when they do that.
