SD card recognized as "broken"... - Desire General

Hi,
After turning off the phone and replacing the battery yesterday, the SD card is no more recognized and appears as "broken"... When clicking on the notifications, sytem asks to format it.
Works well plugged in my PC with usb adapter and even in recovery.
Has someone already experienced this or knows what I should do...
Would formatting keep the ext3 ?
Using DeFroST 2.5a atm.
Thank you.

HTC Touch HD SD Card Problem

Hi.
in a short time my htc no longer recognizes the memory card, i don't know what to do, I tried to hard-reset but did work. someone can help me.
thanks
I have had the same problem using a sandisk 16GB card, it stops recognising the card. What I did was re format the card & reload my contents, it then works ok but I dont know why this happens. Can anyone help?
Hi,
I had a similar problem, (the micro SD was recognised but after when the card was accessed it seems the driver crashed and the micro SD was not anymore availlable until I eject and insert the card again).
The solution I found was to plug the phone in storage mode and to make a scandisk of the micro SD.
It found some errors and all was corrected.
I hope it could help
I already tried with other cards and it always happens the same, does not recognize the card.
which leads me whatever the problem is not the card but the phone.
Loose contact?
Mine is similar. I tried sticking two layers of adhesive tapes on the back of the card ("MicroSD" label side), it worked for a few days. Since yesterday evening it's dead again, and wouldn't work with even three layers!
I had the same problem but solved as follows.
First connect to PC as ""Disk Drive" (not thru active sync). Than in "My Computer" you will see the card. Than format the card as FAT32 (64 kb).
After that, right click and select "Properties">"Sharing">"Advanced Sharing" and check the "Share this directory" and close clicking on "Ok".
Disconnect the phone and reconnect via "Active Sync" (do not forget to deselect click under "Active Sync" connection type).
I hope it helps.

format Storage Card?
How? It is a micro sd, and I can't find anything that will reformat it, which is supposed to be a likely requirement in getting android running
I suffered a similar problem on my HTC Touch Diamond2 after upgrading from WM 6.1 to 6.5. After much research, a found one article that indicated the problem may be possible due to different chipset configuration for the SD memory card being incompatible with the ROM. It suggested the Japan-made SD card maybe more compatiable with WM compared to the Taiwan made memory card. I switch to a Japan made chip and everything is great

I've got the same problem, however my HTC HD doesn't recognise the memory card at all, neither does my computer.
So how do I format/recover the files? Or is there another fix for this issue?

I use my digital camera for formatting „broken“ SD cards
Cameras just use different memory card detection method, so the card could be formatted
i put it in a old nokia of a friend and the nokia asked if i wanted to format the card to make it usable and i chosed yes and it worked

This solution worked.
I had a little problem with the formatting part the computer giving "Windows cannot complete format" or something similar but I solved the problem apparently.
To solve the problem:
- Right-click on "My computer"
- Click "Manage"
- Under "System Tools" Click on "Device Manager"
- Click the "+" beside Disk Manager
- Right Click on the device (Your HTC)
- Select properties
- Click on the "Policies" tab
- Select the "Optomize for performance" radio button
- Click ok
- Go to "My Computer" select your device
- Right-click "Format"
And that's it.
Hope you find it useful.
Hi there!
I'm getting the above also now I have an Htc Desire and get a symbol at the top left of the microsd symbol with a cog next to it ... booo.
This was after i installed a 16gb microsdhc class 10, as opposed to the 4gb microsdhc card that came with it.
I'm confused with the 'how to' above by tavsiyeci. Can you break it down more for the computer noobs in us? I've tried a few different methods but still no luck
Thanks if possible!
J
None of the above solutions worked for me, I tried several cards and still cannot get any of them to work.
The strange thing is, that after a ROM flash the cards works for a couple of days, then starts to disappear randomly, and at the end disappeares forever (until next flash).
Can you please advice me on another solution, if any?

I did it like this:
- insert card to PC via USB adaptor
- run chkdsk via win or cmd line, write CHKDSK X: (X as your flashcard letter)
- after check is complete, explorer should see card normally, so use "ARDC Data Recovery Tools 1.1" (free)
- Tools-Image backup/restore, Create Image from Disk, select card as image disk source and browse your new image, name it like "backup.img"
- after recovery is complete, use any image tool (I'm using UltraISO) to extract data from image
- format SD card and copy stuff back
Can we have a recommendation for the type of SD card to use?
Because I used an older type and it was terrible, but now that i have used a newer SD card it is doing alright.
I also do not need to do the waiting for SD card modification in the startup.txt

[Q] Working Sound, But No Sound...?

This is definitely a confusing one on my part. I have my HTC Tilt2 running Android, and the volume options for it and everything are working perfectly. I can hear music being played out of it and all. Thing is though, I can't change ANY of the ringtone options, notifications, or sms reminder sounds. They are all set on silent, with no other options. I look in the /andboot/media/audio however, and I can very clearly see that all the options for sound are still there. I have tried removing Android off of my SD Card to no avail.
Format your card with the HP tool. I think the partition table gets screwed up on peoples cards, and the Windows format doesn't touch the table. Just a guess.
Well, I formatted my SD Card, and... Surprise surprise, it didn't work :/
Maybe it has something to do with a storage file on the phone, idk...

With the HP tool or how did you format it?
Also, are you using the preFRX02 system image or...?
I used the format tool on the phone because I don't have a way of formatting it without it being in the phone since I lost my SD Card Adapter for it.
And I believe I am using... the ProjectAndroid2.2BLAZN.092810 build with the 10/10 update on it.

That's NOT the way I asked you to format.
I even said I think the partition table is what is getting screwed up, and that the Windows format tool doesn't touch the partition table - the WinMo tool would be the same way.
So you lost your USB cable to your PC as well? That's how I always format/communicate with the SD card...

I tried using the USB cable, but I couldn't get the option to format it. It wouldn't come up under the devices for it. Would it possibly have anything to do with syncing it to the PC? Like changing it from using to ActiveSync to connecting with it using the Disk Drive?

Yea, I always select the "Disk Drive" popup on the phone when I want to format/work with just the card. I don't think it'll work in ActiveSync - you'll be able to see the card, but I don't think you'll be able to format it.

I'll do that the moment I can get the Disk Drive to work. Doesn't seem to be appearing up on my computer with that option selected...
*EDIT* Okay, I got it to recognize it under the Disk Drive, but now it won't format. It doesn't even start loading, it just says "Formatting the device..."
*EDIT2* Got it formatted under Windows and using the HP Tool, reinstalled Froyo 2.2 on there, and still didn't have it working. Went through with the Media Scanner though, and it fixed the problem right up. Thanks arrrghhh

[Q] Dropped my phone - Now stuck in bootscreen

Hello guys,
I woke up too early this morning, and i accidentally knocked my phone off the stairs. It fell about 2 meters, bounced and then fell another meter, bounced and fell another meter and stopped.
Thankfully it was in a silicon case (i think that's what made it bounce) and there are no visible damages.
I picked it up, and it seemed to be working. After a few secs it went into sleep mode and would not wake up.
I removed the battery and rebooted, and i got the HTC screen, then the nexus boot screen and it stays stuck on the nexus boot.
I then entered recovery mode and thought i would try and restore my backup. I get the following message:
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(No such file or directory)
E: Can't mount /sdcard
I took off the SD card, put it my pc and it works just fine.
I got another SD card, copied a rom onto it and tried to reinstall through recovery.
I did a wipe/data factory reset and tried to install the rom.
I got the same message...
Is my Desire toast? It's only six months old...
I was running Defrost6.1 and using psfMod 0.9.7.2 as my recovery.
Any advice would be extremely appreciated.
Thanks
aalex
UPDATE
I did another wipe data / factory reset, and i rebooted.
The rom starts up, without any of my previous settings of course, but I still cannot mount my SD card.
From file manager, it seems that it is being mounted, but no files are listed...
When i try with gallery it reports "SD card unmounted or not present".
Any insights?

Wait till the battery dies. Then insert the SD card and try again to boot it (with usb cable connected to have some battery power) again.

With your SD card in your phone go into settings then storage and unmount SD card. Then format your SD card from your phones menu and it should mount the SD card see if that worked.

Hi ste1164,
Thanks for responding. My problem is that my phone cannot pickup the existence of an SD card.
This is a typical USB-brick. I've had one a few weeks ago. You should look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691639&highlight=usb+brick.
If you're new to this, it can be hard to get it working again. Just let me know if you have any problems. It took me a few hours to get it done
From fastboot via ADB, execute "fastboot oem enableqxdm 0" and then reboot it with "fastboot reboot" command.
See if it works.
If you don't remember how to do the above, just search.

its not a usb brick, thats a software brick.... it sounds to me like you have a corrupt sd card, sd cards are very delecate and this can happen from a sudden impact, try formatting the card in windows explorer, obviously you cannot format your sd-ext using windows so try gparted or ubuntu to format your other partition.

Can't be sdcard, op said tried sdcard in PC and tried different sdcard...same result, must be sdcard reader or something.
You never know, might be a USB brick, just happened before the drop and was brought on by the reset...but I agree probably is hardware fault.
Is it possible to flash stock rom from fastboot without sdcard? Could try warranty repair then...

sorry i didnt notice that, could be a usb brick but like i said thats S/W related and i doubt dropping your phone could cause such an error, +1 suppose the sudden reset could cause the usb brick especially if the device was reading or writing to the sd card when it happened, could also be the sd card reader in the device has been damaged or one of the internal components. can the device read the sim card? if it dosent, could be a usb brick
Just a thought...is the sdcard reader attached by a ribbon? (never seen the inside of my desire, hope I never have to)
I'm sure I've heard of a few desires that can't read sdcard anymore, I reckon it's either attached by ribbon or it's the most delicate part of the phone.
I'm hoping it's a loose ribbon because that's an easy fix, even I could do that.
Hey guys,
Thanks to all of you for responding.
My sim card works just fine. I can make and receive calls, texts, go online via 3g and Wifi, connect through bluetooth. As far as i can tell, my phone does everythind it did before except mount an SD card. Also, the android market keeps crashing, and if i try and download anything from the net i get a prompt saying that i need an sd card to download.
So far I took the SD card and put it in my pc. I formated it, tried again but it didnt work.
I then tried a brand new sd card and that didn't work either.
However, I did not format the old card's ext2 partition, and the new sd doesn't have an ext partition yet.
Would this point to a USB Brick as mentioned above?
Would it be possible for me to flash the stock rom on the device?
Thanks once again, to all of you.

Yes, that should solve your problem. I had the same problem a few weeks ago, but that included a malfunctioning usb, even charging didn't work correctly.
To fix the sd-card, you should run the above command using the tool fastboot, available in the Android sdk. After downloading, cd to the tools folder in the sdk and then run the command while your phone is connected to your pc in fastboot mode. Then it should work again.

Hey koenvbeek,
Thanks for the help. I think i may need a bit more of it
Here is what i did so far:
I used Nephrons guide to download and install ADB.
I then rebooted to bootloader. The phone displays "fastboot" and then when i plug it in it dispalys fastboot-usb
I then went to the ADB tools directory and tried to run the command.
I got a message saying the command cannot be run because adbwinapi.dll is missing from my system, and asking me to reinstall everything...
Clearly i made a mistake somewhere but where?
I don't think you made a mistake
Either the requested file is missing, or it can't be used by your computer. First check if the file is present. If not, google for it.
If it is present, your computer can't use it for some reason. Are you on a 64-bit OS? If you're on Vista/7: did you open the cmd promt as admin?
Yeah, nothing wrong, it's just that the API library is missing.
Download it from the attachment here, and put it in the "tools" folder, then try again.
Edit: As you can see it's in an archive, since dll attachment is not enabled here, so extract the file from it.

I don't think recovery from CWM can help this as it just restores "files" from nandroid where partition is another independent thingy. U did partition the sd card. So re-partitioning should be the solution to it.

yes, my pc can detect my external sd, i tick usb debugging and when i connect my CP to the PC there is a notification in my CP and ill just have to click it to connect, normally it would detect both my internal and external sd, but after using the minitool partition wizard to make partition to my 1.7gb sd, my pc can no longer detect my 1.7gb sd (external because its swapped), and ive tried something, ive update my kies, and connect my phone with usb debugging untick, it detects my phone (GT-i8150 in my computer) with internal and external sd card. but still when im connecting with usb debugging on, only 1 sd card is detected, i guess my pc detects it as bad disk because of the mini tool partition wizard, but i dont know how to revert it, ive already uninstall the mini tool... but it doesnt help

The pc sees the sd for 1-2 seconds and ask to format it, then it s not accessible any more, and the formatting attempts (both from the pop-up message and prompt) results in a "cyclic redundancy check error" and fail..
i dont mind losing the data, i just want to keep using that sd
explained here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72729502&postcount=38933
so, did u fix it anyway/found a guide to use bootit ?
thanks a lot

after uptade to jelly bean when i plug the usb cable dont appear like in ICS for choose to charge or to hard disk.
so how to solve this?
thx regards
did you looked on pc also...? it can also be that you must update htc sync because of the mtb thingy.....second should be look for an sd speed app..and set it to 128 instead of most 2048.....
if that also fail...the data should be gone...maybe a wipe script that also wiped sd card or something like this
go into recovery and mount usb storage

what version of cwm...htc sync updated..?
yes htc sync is updated and the cwm is 5.8.4.0.
thx
so from that side all ok...if you are in a file explorer...and go to sd..you see something...? if yes..try to mount from clockwork...if not work...try to copy the files with adb
Tough luck brother, if all else fails then deal with it. Many, including me, have faced the same. Good luck to you.
When you mount the USB mass storage in recovery you have to stay on that screen or it will auto-unmount. Once you've done that load up Recuva from Piriform and scan for the phones storage on the pc.
