Hi, I have run into a problem using Unrevoked 3.1 on my factory unlocked,
non branded HTC Desire on stock Android 2.1 Update 1 via OTA.
Initially I tried Unrevoked on a Windows & 64 bit machine. I installed
the ADB Drivers, and ran Unrevoked which failed on the reboot with a
"failed to flash..." message. I have tried on XP 32 bit, Windows 7
32bit and finally I downloaded Unbuntu and tried that. Every time I
get the "failed to flash..." message. When the phone goes into
Flashboot, I can select Recovery but there is a pause and after a few
seconds there are 4 error messages which appear briefly on the screen
before it moves back to Flashboot, where I can select Reboot and boot
back into my working non-rooted Android system. The error message is
something like "No Image or Wrong Image! PB999.ZIP, No Image or Wrong
Image! PB999.IMG, No Image or Wrong Image! PB999.NBH etc"
I tried to install the Froyo 2.2 OTA update to see if that fixed the
problem but it also failed with the same failed Recover message. Any
suggestion to fix the problem please?
The error messages you describe are normal.
Unrevoked doesn't work with OTA 2.2. Don't know why it didn't work on OTA 2.1 either.

That's the worst thing you could have done, other than bricking your Desire. Now you're stuck with the 2.2 OTA, until anyone finds a way to root with the new HBOOT (which might never happen).
Just to be clear - I am still on Android 2.1, I just can't root my phone with unrevoked.....
Firmware:
2.1-update1
Build:
1.21.405.2 CL174215 release-keys
HBOOT is version 0.80.0000
If you'd like I can help. Are you on boards.ie by any chance?
Thanks would be great. I am on boards.ie username is darraghn.
The same problem!
Hi, i've got the same problem!
Can you tell me how you've fixed it?
Hi, I'd love to help, but haven't resolved it yet - the phone works and I haven't had time to take abc27 up on his offer to help. If you fix yours I'd love to know the answer.

All of you with the similar problem: UNINSTALL HTC Sync, reboot your machine, and launch unrevoked. It has a compatibility(?) problem with HTC Sync, due to the HTC drivers. It took me 1 hour to find out, when I rooted my unlocked/unbranded Desire with unrevoked. Maybe that's why yours is messing up too. And don't forget to download and install the samsung drivers with the link provided by unrevoked, in the read me, or how-to.
f.
P.S: Once successfully rooted, you can then insall HTC Sync and do what you have to do with it.
Hi baitdude, I managed to fix it yesterday. Solution was to download:
PB99IMG_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed_txt.zip
Rename the file as PB99IMG.zip and put it in the roor folder of the sd card. Switch off the phone and restart by holding down the volume button and power. It will reflah the phone with Android 2.1 and you can then move on from that.
I tried rooting again using unrevoked and got a black screen on startup with the HTC logo and 4 warning triangles in each corner. The only way to recover was to download the official Android 2.1 RUU and reflash the phone. It took 3 attempts before it worked. Then I just gave up on rooting and dowloaded the official HTC Android 2.2 update OTA. It failed twice, each time updating and rebooting to a white screen with the green HTC logo. On the third time I took out the battery and rebooted normally. Finally it worked. I had to reboot it again before the mobile connection and the market worked. All now working normally.
I hope this helps someone.
can't root

I followed unrevoked instructions exactly but got a failed to flash image as well. I have the DINC. Also, how can you uninstall htc synch if it is a system app being that you must be rooted to remove system apps? I've already tried easyroot, universal androot system app remover and all to no avail. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. All I want to do is remove the apps that self start and drain my battery.

be sure to remove only HTC Sync, but leave your HTC drivers installed, those are required in order to recognize the phone (I have first unistalled the drivers also and the Unrevoked app was saying waiting for phone..)
Good luck!

Hi,
Got a notification on my Desire HD (unlocked/unbranded) stating a new update is available. I Downloaded the ~44 MB update, clicked ok to update,
This is what happens:
System Shutdown
Sestarts
HTC green logo comes on..
Android icon with box and arrow appears.. the progress indicator goes upto about 25%,
then : the box changes to a triangle with an exclamation mark...
and then nothing happens..at one attempt for upto 3 hours..
I have to pull the battery out...restart..
I've tried this many times to no joy.
Had Visionary with perm root installed, unistalled it, factory reset the phone, went into recovery mode and deleted dalvik cache... still no joy.
I did, moons ago, used Titanium backup to remove (not freeze) some apps I knew I'd never use... could that be causing the problem?.
Is it possible to revert to a stock rom from HTC... how?..
If not, is there a way to install this upgrade?. I'm not too fussed about Rooting... can wait till someone figures it out for this upgrade..
Thanks.
Riz
Seems like the PermRoot breaks the update.
There are countless other threads saying basically the same.

You could try installing via bootloader, but your DHD would return to factory settings.
Download This ROM. Rename it to PD98IMG.zip and place on your SD Card.
Turn off your DHD (Disable FastBoot) and power on holding VOL DOWN.
Your DHD will then apply the update itself. With the new update you will not be able to root, HTC have fixed the exploit Visionary+ used. A new method to root will have to be found.
Thanks Andy.
I downloaded the stock firmware from : xdafil_es/DesireHD/RUU/RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.32.405.6_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155891_signed.exe
replace _ after xdafil with a .
Connected the phone to my laptop, dbl clicked on the exe, it flashed the phone back to this stockk firmware...
Phone re-booted re-virginized. the OTA worked then.
Ofcourse, Visionary, Titanium don't work anymore, but, guess its a matter of time!!!
Thank you
thank you for the help, worked here
thanks for the solution!
Hi,
i tried to install the OTA 1.72.405.3 via WIFI, downloaded it and let the installation routine work. Then i got a red triangle with an explanation mark and the installation stopped. I looked up the log file and found the problem.
A month ago i deinstalled Stock.apk via Titanium Backup (exploit remove) using temproot by visionary. So now i can't get the OTA Update on the usual way.
Now i downloaded the update manually from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885996
Is it possible to simply rename it as update.zip, put it on the sd-card and let it run? I don't have root, uninstalled visionary, TB, and the superuser.apk. I don't need s-off or something like that at all, just want to get the phone running.
Do i have to reinstall the stock.apk (how to do that??), do i have to fully flash the phone or can i just let it run with the update.zip on phonecard?
thanks for your help!

did it and workt out well!
a big big thank you
No problem.
well it seems like i was a bit to quick.
made everything like you said in your post, update went through cleanly. turned off phone over night, restarted it this morning and the update was gone. retried it by putting the file in the sd-root-folder (renamed) and started the phone with vol-down and power. Phone was loading and checking image and then gave me the normal bootloader options (fastboot/recovery/....) and then stopped and waited for input.
what do i have to select then to get the update permanently?
Well, i now redownloaded the OTA update and it failed , red triangle and explanation mark. anybody got a suggestion?
Ok,
by starting phone via HBOOT my DHD gets the PD98IMG.zip, loads it, checks it and then directs me into HBOOT Menu. What do i have to do then?
Pushing Recovery tells me there is an error in opening some comand on drive e:
do i have to make a factory reset now?
Funny, yesterday my phone instantly booted with that image.
It does sound very odd. Have you tried running This Official HTC RUU from your computer?
i took the ruu you gave me in an earlier post and put it on the sd-card.
the image is, as i said, loaded and checked and then i get into hboot with the normal options :-( what am i doing wrong?
if i take the exe it will be a full flash, right? all data gone
Yes if you run that .exe from your computer, it will perform the flash process again.
What is your Android Version? Settings > About > Android Version -
Android Version 2.2

Yes that is certainly pre-update. Did your DHD have S-OFF before you attempted any of this?
no
i never turned s-off. just temproot with visionary, deleted stock.apk using titanium and then removed both (TB and Visionary). that's all i did. How can i get the image i downloaded and that is loaded in HBOOT running?
Ok, from what I can gather. The DHD Security (S-ON) has restored your handset back to the way it was. The update should of overwritten S-ON with the new firmware, but it hasn't.
Have you tried running that RUU from your computer?
ähm, no... no possibility... mac user...
Ah, hmm.....
You could attempt through a Virtual Machine, but thats a lot of extra hassle.
What I would suggest is to run through the whole Rooting, S-OFF, SuperCID & Radio S-OFF and attempt the PD98IMG.zip again.
what happens if i let the image load and select factory reset? will he take the image vor reset?
I'm not sure, you could try it.
installed a windows version via bootcamp and tried to run the exe. didn't work first, couldn't connect. then it connected, started bootloader but got a timeout because windows driver update needed to long to get an android 1.0 HTC Bootloader driver. After that, Phone hung, turned it of and now again Error 170, can't connect to phone...
Have you installed HTC Sync in your Windows environment? Or the Android SDK?
Hi people, I have screwed up majorly.
I own a rooted froyo stock HTC Desire and got tired of seeing the update notice on the small OTA updates HTC have made. Since my phone was rooted, I was unable to actually install it normally because it would give me some error and exit as you all know.
When I finally had enough, I downloaded the update and renamed it to update.zip, placed it in the root directory of my SD card and proceeded to install it through Clockworkrecovery. In the beginning it proceeded as normally by installing, but somewhere it screwed up and I was stuck in the infinite reboot thing. The HTC logo would appear and seconds later it would turn off and start over again.
I then tried to boot into clockwork recovery to run the update again, but alas I couldnt. It now says "E:Cant open /cache/recovery/command" now I am stuck in the normal recovery system.
Is there any way out of here? I have tried to download Cyanogenmod and rename to update.zip and install, but file verification fails. I know it was a longshot.
I dont think it's bricked....
"All" you have to do is get an official RUU - put it in fastboot mode and run the RUU
That way u get a unrooted stock rom.
After that u can root again using Unrevoked and get the rooted 2.29.405.5 rom
the one i use is : RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.2_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed.exe

I enter fastboot mode by powering the phone on, holding volume down. Then I connect the phone to my computer and run the .exe?
yup - that should be it...

Just make sure your desire isnt branded, else running the WWE RUU wont work.

Well its not branded, but got another issue.
I only have access to a computer with Windows 7 and got error 170. I have been searching and all the guides to bypass it requires the phone to be turned on and connected to HTC Sync, for above reasons I am not able to do so.
Any ideas?
Edit: Seems like I got it working, used this guide to correct my USB drivers.

So it's working now ? u got your phone back ?
Hello,
I've a Desire were Cyanogen 7 is installed - as I need to return the phone I need to restore the Stock-ROM.
Have downloaded RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe but when I try to install the phone stuck during the 1st reboot (HTC logo on black background appears) and then the RUU aborts (waiting for bootloader.....then error 171).
What have I missed?
Thanks for your help!
Is that the RUU that your phone came with?
No, downloaded from a link here at the forum - got the wrong one?
The thing u have to do is first install htc sync, then connect ur phobe to the pc, when ur phone reboot by installation ur internet should be turned off. Its the driver that creates problem. Works for me perfectly..

I had problems installing from RUUs, I used a zip file. Look in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10417988#post10417988
I got the same problem.
Need to return to stock but for me it won't even recognize the Phone when i plug it in. Which is strange because i can access the files through windows and all, but it says it's not connected in the RUU. :S
I think my "problem" ist ClockWork - it seems that the phone don't get into the bootloader (??) required to flash.
If I disconnect the usb while the HTC logo is shown it switchs to the loader and I can see a line RRU (normaly there are the four lines)
The first part seem to work (check phone, initiate reboot, ....)
SOLVED:
Just killed the RUU while the device showed the HTC logo and restarted the RUU.
Then the update recogniced the bootloader and installed the stock ROM.
what do u mean by killing the RUU?
*g* Windows TaskManager & killed Process
or you colud just run the ruu from fastboot lol its much easier and less likely to brick ur phone than force closing the ruu in the process of searching for the fone
oh....hmmm....
Good point - tried a lot but never tried that....damn
1st you have to flash the ...bootlloader for stock romss ...the same way u did before installing .cm7
u can find it here
alpharev.nl
flash alpharev for stock rom..... and then do a full wipe and install the rom through recovery
u cannot install stock froyo over alpharev cm7
boot.
Yes you can as the RUU replaces the AlphaRev HBOOT with the stock one. I've done it with no issues
Hi!
I have a DHD with the FroYo Stock ROM. The device crashes quite often for a few weeks now, and I decided to upgrade the ROM using the regular HTC Software update in-device function as the device already reminded me of it for some time now.
It downloads the new rom without any problems, asks me to install it, reboots - and stucks at the "HTC" Logo (not already showing the "quite brilliant", just "HTC"). I tried this several times - no changes at all.
I tried to do a factory reset then, first using the "rest" menu in the system settings, then using the bootloader (should be the bootloader, the thing that opens when starting the device while pressing the vol-down button). The same behaviour here - the device reboots and stucks at the HTC Logo. I need to remove the battery - and nothing has changed. Therefore it isn't even possible to reset it any more but in general it's still usable (sending txt messages, calling, using apps).
At last I tried to do a manual ROM Update, and therefore installed Visionary. Unfortunately it crashes when trying to click on "temp root".
Do you have any idea what the problem might be and what I can do (except of sending it back to HTC, it's my only phone).
Thank you in advance!
How did you try to update it? With OTA update? If that's the case then try to update with the appropriate RUU instead.
How do I do that? I updated using the update procedure of the phone itself (Software Info -> Check for Updates).
Search is your friend Here's a link (md5: 74B9CE337AFC58EEB83966A4D9D79990) to the WWE (the generic one) Gingerbread RUU. Download it to your computer, start the HTC Sync application on your computer, connect your phone with the USB cable in HTC Sync mode and run the exe-file you just downloaded.
If your phone is branded or from a region that uses a specific rom you need to download the corresponding RUU for it.
doesn't work either.. might there be a general problem with maybe the boot loader? any other way of resetting the device?
How did it fail?

The RUU exe runs problemless, the progress is shown on the device and I get an confirmation message that the rom has been updated successfully.
The device restarts again and I see the "HTC" logo where it stucks again. After removing the battery and restarting everything is just as before - the updated didn't complete.
Any ideas what the problem might be?
If your bootloader is still stock and all official updates fail, its possible that you have a defect device. The froyo crashes are also an indicator. Do you have warranty for it?
yes, but it's my only device and the delay of sending it to HTC and getting it back after some time would therefore be very annoying...
Is there anything else that I might try?
