i have tried to switching back and fourth between the different wimax radios, and sometimes it would come back..well i got sick of messing with it so i went back to stock with root! and now i cant seem to get 4g to work!

Baseband Version: 1.36.00.04.02
Kernel Version: 2.6.29-ac94cf60 [email protected]#1
Build Number: 1.17.651.1
Browser Version: WebKit 3.1
PRI Version: 1.34_003
PRL Version: 60669
i just need to know which radio i should re try just to get my 4g back!!!
please help asap
Your title was a little misleading so I canged it accordingly.
I would suggest trying this to get you to 1.47 with all the the correct radio/wimax
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
Test that out -- it worked great for me.
From there, go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743352 and download the 2.2 Rooted Odexed ROM, New radio, and new wimax. Follow the directions and make sure to do a full reboot after flashing each.

trying it now! im trying to avoid going to 2.2 until DamageControl releases their version...but i hope this works!
hey do i need to re root also? because i lost my root
wait, i just red you had to install super user, and its suppose to automatically root/nand/ and do everything? how is this possible
Can you post a little bit more detail as to what issues you are experiencing?
Is your 4G just stuck on scanning?
Is your 4G scanning > connecting to sprint > obtaining IP address > back to scanning > etc etc endless loop.
Have you checked to make sure your wimax mac id is still correct?
What area are you in? Try posting to see if anyone else in your area is experiencing problems. Just worth a try because earlier last week, I went through the trouble of flashing a bunch of different radios, reading through a bunch of fixes only to find out that other people in my area couldn't get 4G to sign on either. So it turned out that it was an issue with Sprint itself. Had to go one week without 4G but now its back on and its faster than before.

yes that is the problem i was going through, but at certain times on DamageControl it would start to work if i got lucky and got the right Wimax to work

super user does not automatically do anything. it simply provides /system access to those applications that require it.
if you applied either the leaked or the official froyo update that was not modified to maintain root access, you are out of luck for the time being.

That was the exact same problem I had on my phone. It turns out that 4G was just down in the area. I even went through the trouble of reflashing my wimax radios. What city are you in right now? I can try to search other forums to see if there are others in your area experiencing the same issues.
What you can do if you are still restless, run ADB and run wimax_mtd, you can either use ADB or you can also download Terminal Emulator from the market.
then type
su
wimax_mtd
Go through it and check to see if your wimax mac address is still correct by verifying it with the address you have underneath the battery.
Next would be to check if your user login info is still correct. It should be [email protected] I believe you can check this in the data settings. Just dial ##data#, you might need your MSL, but I think you can still go into view mode without the MSL. Im not really the best at explaining things in detail if any of this dont make sense, feel free to msg me. I'm fairly new but I do know how it felt to have 4G stop working all of a sudden.
Also I believe if you updated your wimax, your base rom must match for it to work. Such as the wimax from the 1.47 ota, you must be running a 1.47 base rom.
I assumed that you still had root. If you are not rooted, you are out of luck. You will need to root your phone before using the method. If you are on 2.2 without root, you are completely out of luck.
Using the whitslack method will not root/unlock nand for you -- it simply will update your phone to 1.47 with the corresponding radios.

If you ran the first part of Whitslack's method (putting the PC36IMG on your SD card and running it in bootloader) just do the second part (putting the superuser.apk on your SD card and flashing it in custom recovery) and you will have full root again.

Rom Manager?
Update for our convo*
Ok just re got rom manager, and flashed Clockwork, so my root is still there
Actually I used whitslacks method and I did retain root. Since his pc136img contains the Dev hboot all I had to do was just as his thread says flash the superuser zip when you are done

now do you guys think i should attempt to go back to DamageControl, and not mess with the radios this time..and it will still work?
If you are running the latest radios and wimax radio I would flash one of the newer 2.2 froyo roms.

iv been trying to figure out how to get the step 2 of the root to work but iv been having nothing but trouble iv tryed doing it in lunix and windows(useing the 1 click methoid) some probloms im having are in adb push mostly it tells me that no such file or directory exists or insignificant permissions. sometimes i get read only file system. iv managed to get around the insignificant permissions and read only file system by puting it into recovery mode but still have the no such file or directory exist. i have usb debuging turned on. im begianing to think it might be my rom seeing as it dosent work in lunix or windows (my rom is Baked Snack rom)
if been searching the web for 2 week for a fix but still can get it to work so if anyone can help it would be awsome
Wait, how did you get Baked Snack as your ROM if you didn't already have a full root? Baked Snack should already BE rooted, and you should have been rooted in order to flash it in the first place.
And either way, to which "step 2" are you referring?
the baked snack rom i have must be older i have'nt changed my rom in a few weeks i didnt even notice untill i tryed to install ubuntu in my phone but the step 2 im refering to is the nand unlocking step
1. Wrong place
2. search
3. Use simple root its much easier (ok bye)
ok sorry this is the only place i could see it fiting. and you could avoid making your self look like and ass by reading my first post iv been searching for 2 week and iv tryed the 3 click root methoid i have the same issue
Well, the point is, this is a question so it goes in Q&A (some people are sticklers). And if it was me, I'd flash a stock RUU and start all over. But I'm OCD like that. I'll reinstall a whole Linux distro if I feel like I got one of the settings wrong.
okay ill try that first and ill post back
and my bad on the wrong area
Did you do the OTA update? That may had made you lose root but I dont think that makes you lose NAND unlock.
Check your your PRI version in Menu/Settings/About Phone/Software Information/PRI Version. If you are 1.34_003 then you should have NAND Unlocked and should only have to root.
This should probably be located in the Q&A's section.
i had the ota update at one point but that was because i flashed one of the stock roms and i just flashed back to a stock rom to see if i could do it form there also when i tred to re root my phone with the 3 click root meathoid i got the same issues and my pri versoin is 1.40_003

If you are running PRI 1.40_003 you are not NAND unlocked. That is why you can not flash a custom rom. It should be 1.34_003 for the Eng HBOOT (NAND unlocked)
Guys, I'm lost. I search. I read (my eyes are bleeding), but unfortunatley I don't understand the terms, so it's all greek to me.
I have a stock EVO with 2.1 The only thing I have done is added Unrevoked3 to bring back my ability to use wifi tethering.
I would now like to get to 2.2. I've been saying "NO" to the OTA update because I know nobody has rooted 2.2 yet.
That said, it seems that because I haven't upgraded I can pull root, apply 2.2, keep root and keep wifi tethering.
I'm wondering if someone can provide step by step instructions on how to do this given a stock phone with only unrevoked3 on it so far.
I know - search... I'm so lost though. I want to be as close to stock as possible when I'm finished, and ideally I'd like to be able to go back and apply the stock OTA or HTC update if I want to, even if I lose root.
Can anyone help? Step by step?
Thank you!
If you rooted 2.1, then you can upgrade to 2.2.
There are probably 10 rooted ROMs in this forum now. Pick the one you like and flash it. Just be sure it says it is rooted.
You must be FULLY ROOTED for most roms on here. Unrevoked3 is not a full root.
Look into Simpleroot to get a full NAND unlock and root and then you can boot into the custom recovery and flash as you please.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=706411
Try using this method and flashing a custom rom should give you root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745420
Sounds like I'm hearing 2 things. Do I need to do a full root (BTW, I'm on an old mac, so I can't use simpleroot), or can I do as xHausx says and just install over the unrevoked3 "root"?
Recommendations on the ROM's closest to stock Froyo?
Will I be updating the radio at the same time?
Sorry - newbie
Go with xHausx's method then.
I'm running Baked Snack 1.3, it's a solid ROM. You'll be playing with many roms over the next couple weeks.
Here's a stock rooted 2.2

Okay, so I am downloading the one Grouse recommended. At the same time I'm doing a backup via rom manager and have done a titanium backup already.
From here is it as easy as transferring the .zip file to my Sd card and then loading it via rom manager???
Again, remember I'm on unrevoked3 and everything else is stock.
Will I have to update any radios, etc?
Thanks so much - what a wonderful resource this site is.

this will not work. you need to have "full" root and be NAND unlocked to flash roms. Unrevoked3 is not full root as stated above. you may however try UnrevokedForever. just find the appropriate thread and follow the instructions if it is compatible with a mac, dont remember right off the top of my head.
Okay, t3project... explain the thread in post #4 here.

Okay, so I've updated with no problems. I'm on Froyo now, I retained wifi tether. All is good with the world.
Except Pandora. I get the poor quality and the closing when nav or phone call.
Is there a fix for this yet? Also, now that I'm running a custom ROM I would assume I can't take any updates that google would push out. I can still update apps, but if this problem with Pandora is with the OS am I screwed?
Thanks,

I've found the "fix" even before I tried to install 2.2. The problem is that I don't have a PC to work off of.

Probably with a stock rooted rom but if you want to do other things such as overclock, uncap the fps, custom kernels and whatnot you'll need to be full nand unlocked.
Let me apologize first to all the people who have perhaps answered these questions throughout the 2 threads already I've read through both of them and cannot quite get a handle on a few things.
Q#1 - Before I do this I need a back up to save all my contacts and apps ect... but most of the ones I'm finding say they require root in order to work. Is there an app for the PC that will do this for me or something I can download on or off the Market for the back up I've over looked?
Q#2 - Is Unrevoked 3 + Forever a true unlocked nand that is permanent? Or will I have to go through the steps for unlocking nand? Basically after I perform unrevoked forever will I be able to simply flash cm6 or baked snack by renaming them to recovery.img? Or should I go ahead and go through the simple root method if I'm trying to get full nand unlocked and flash over to another rom?
Q#3 - Now once this is complete will I loose my radio and PRL or PRI or whatever they are(it would be nice to see a quick answer for that as well)? If so and I've used urevoked 3 and forever can I just go through the OTA again and the PRL update to get these back and retain root + nand?
Q#4 - After all is said and done, not having ever rooted a phone before, I'm wondering at this point how exactly to flash over to CM6 or Baked Snack ect....?
and what backup would be best to use here? I think Titanium is a option. Once I have root but should I restore my contacts and apps ect... then run Titanium(or whatever it is I'm looking for) from the 2.1? After that flash over to what Rom I'm wanting and restore again using titanium this time to get all my stuff into the new rom?
1) Yes, you need to back stuff up, your phone will be wiped. Not sure what the best way to back up your apps is, but I think you can re-download paid apps for free using your Google account, since that's how you sign into market. Contacts can be exported to your SD card, but they also sync with your Gmail account. Beyond that, don't know.
2) Yes, it's a full root when they are combined. UF is an S-OFF and NAND unlock.
3) Yes, UF should protect you from losing root in the future.
4) Search the forums. Flashing is as easy as copying the ROM .zip to your SD card and rebooting into recovery. Wipe everything first (which means you'll lose data if you don't back up). Titanium works well, but you may run into problems if you try to back up all your settings and apps and then restore them all - they don't always work right between versions and/or ROMs. Best to re-download whatever you can. This goes along with your first question. Again, search. Lots of info on this.
But it's always recommended that you use the recovery to do a NANDROID backup, so you can go back to where you were before the flash. It's a full image of your current ROM.
I've heard there's issues with CM because it checks for the eng spl to determine if you have full NAND unlocked. Forever does unlock it, its just not the same method as using an engineering build. All other ROMs should work with no issue and there is probably a work around for CM.
I can add a little something to 1
Try downloading an app called mybackup from the market - free trial only works for 30 days, but thats ok. it can back up your apps (although I've never used it for that), but more importantly, it can also backup your call logs, sms, mms, bookmarks, and a bunch of other stuff. No root needed for this either.
as a rule, you should always back up and save your contacts as google contacts. Then you don't need to ever worry about losing them.
You know, as soon as you flash the new PC36IMG in that new rooting guide, you're at the same starting point as toastcfh's method. You can do a full manual root from there as well and not have to worry about Unrevoked at all. Probably a good idea to run UF at the end, though.
quick question how do I save my contacts to google contacts?
Also thank you all for the help. Did someone find a work around for CM6 using the urevoked methods? or can I just do them to ensure I have the root and nand then do the quick root or full root method afterward?
For new contacts, just choose Google under contact type. I think you may have to manually enter existing ones into Google though or import them somehow - and its much easier to do that from a computer.
Don't think there's a fix for cm yet, but I'm pretty sure you can use any of the older root methods when you get back down to 2.1, and those will let you flash cm.

Hmmm so there isn't anyway to ensure that I can keep root permanently and still flash the CM6? I'm thinking for some reason (not really sure why) that i want to do the OTA again and update my radio and PRL don't really know what they do (think PRL has something to do with data) then flash over the cm6 but this isn't a feasible option it seems. Well I'm back at 2.1 so do I not need to update the radio and PRL? or will baked snack or what ever come with these updates already? still a bit confused about this whole thing but its worked well so far.

Is that not what Unrevoked Forever does? Permanent root?

You have to install unrevoked 3 first. That will give you super user permissions where you can then backup your device.
Easiest is to:
A. Install unrevoked 3
B. Install Rom Manager
C. Use Rom Manager to backup your device
D. Use listables to make a list of your contacts and apps

Yes. Do unrevoked forever, and then do all the HTC updates for PRL and your radios, except don't update to Android 2.2 through HTC obviously.
This is a major difference between unrevoked and simple root. Simple root makes you jump through hoops to update PRL and radios.

1. Unrevoked 3

Simple as it gets

Another good walkthough using unrevoked:

So I've flashed over to Baked Snack or what ever it is and tried to restore all my contacts ect with My Backup but it has totally wiped my 7 "pages" now they are all empty is this something I should be worried about or should I just rebuild them?
Note: I forgot to do a nandroid back up between the 2.1 flash to the Baked Snack.
So have I lost my PRL and my Wimax and Radio? And if I have is this a big deal? Kinda worried about updating them manually seeming as how people are saying they've bricked their phones from it. Will I have to flash back to 2.1 and update again or is this pointless because when I do my factory wipe before flashing the rom does it delete the updated PRL Radio and Wimax?
And I greatly appreciate all of you help here. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
*For my next time through where is Rom Manager? Is this a market or pc app?
i have another question ones you are done with this can you install another rom for ex: omj?
nevermind, i fixed it by uninstalling htc sync and then running unrevoked 3
Well Baked Snack is good and all but it seems to be using up more of my mem then the official froyo. Why is that? I'm thinking I want to change over to Cyanogen (not for the memory use but I'm really not digging sense) but I'm hearing that its not possible with Unrevoked. Could someone give me some advice on how to set it up so I can flash CM6? Can I still go about using the simple root method over the unrevoked? Then flash to CM6? Or will I have to remove the root somehow and then flash the 2.1 then do something? Ohh its all so very confusing for now but I'll get the hang of this soon and stop asking questions.
Someone post a link as to where are the latest radios are please?
Hey xda community,
my friend recently got an evo and he asked me if i can root it for him.
I have a rooted evo too but i have a different version. he got the new 0004 version of the evo while mines is the 0003. i rooted mine using that whole rageagasintthecage method, and idk if i can root his like that.
my question is what is the best way to achieve full root on the new 0004 versions.
I know google could probably answer this but i rather have someone from the community help me out.
The most popular way is via unrevoked. Unless something has changed, it should root all versions.

Yea pretty sure UNrevoked will do the job.

thanks for the replies peeps, you think this guide is good?
http://htcevorooting.x10.mx/wiki/index.php?title=How_to_root_your_current_EVO_4G_with_Unrevoked3
anyone? is it a good guide?
http://unrevoked.com/#evo
Go there, download the install
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
Go there and install the hboot drivers
Lastly, install htc sync, then uninstall the program. On your phone go into settings > applications > development > check usb debugging.
After you've done that, connect your phone to your pc in charge only, then run the unrevoked reflash package. It'll take about 5 minutes and reboot about 2 times, let it run the full course.
I plan on removing unrevoked so that I can receive the latest update and then re-root. I only use wireless tethering and trying to get OpenVPN. Other than that, I don't use other root capabilities. Is this a bad idea (updating OTA)?
You can just update your rom, flash to a sense rom, update your prl and flash back. I don't recommend accepting the official OTA can you can lose your root.
I have just successfully rooted my evo4g just now. Before I can flash a rom, what are the other things I must do? (nand unlock/radio/pri/prl/etc)??
Thanks,
Hplaya

Well you should be nand unlocked if you used unrevoked. Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485 to get the radio, ect, you can use the combo flash if you like. Just make sure to backup your current rom, then flash,

Definitely do a backup, and then move the backup to your computer for safekeeping. The person before me provided the correct link for the radio upgrades.
After that, you should be set to flash. (Assuming you've picked out a ROM that suites your wants and needs.)

The main page of that website lists more options regarding rooting, backing up, flashing, etc. and I found it to be very helpful when I went through all the steps.
Just use this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
works like a champ for all hardware versions & you'll be rooted in 30 minutes.

See my post on the front page. but unrevoked does give you nand unlock. The earlier versions didn't, which you had to flash the unforever zip to get the nand unlock, but its been merged into the flash.
And after you root, you hold vol+down while turning the phone on, and you go to the bootloader, select recovery. You'll be on clockworkmod recovery, then you just select backup from backup/restore menu.

That's how I rooted!
Thanks TR. I'll try that and see how it goes. I'm ultimately trying to get OpenVPN running and having problems getting the tun.ko file for my build. I don't have linux to compile my own for 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e, so I thought I'd try to update in the interim.
since im rooted and my phone has been backed up now...
is there a way to remove sprints bloatware? or would that only be through flashing?
I'm still a n00b to android flashing so i will be reading your guides...what other advantages can I expect from flashing to a new rom? (speed, battery life, etc)

You can remove the sprint apps by going into titanium backup, And depending on the rom, you will get speed, and kernels help with battery life. Generally, AOSP is faster cuz it doesn't have all the sprint crap in it.
any links to the next process after rooting/nand unlocked is done? I've read about people losing their 4g keys? how do i ensure this wont happen?
kernel/radio/rom flashing? anyone got rom recommendations?
I just got a second hand EVO the guys said he didnt root it but after I set it up the 4g will not turn on and the wifi does not work. Its not searching or giving an authentication error just says unable to start 4g and under wifi it just says error.
Doesn't seem like the same issue most ppl have listed was hoping to get some help fixing this.

So you're currently unrooted at the moment? Have you tried the simple things first? such as a battery pull, and then updating the profile and prl, via menu/settings/system updates. Also, some info on your phone would help figure some things out. What radio version are you on, what software version, pri version, and your bootloader shows S-on or S-off?
If I was in your situation, and just got the phone, I'd run an RUU to completely wipe it and put it back to stock. Find an RUU here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060&highlight=hboot-0.97+ruu : If you don't want to use RUU, you could simply load a PC36IMG to your sd card, boot to the bootloader, and let it update that way. Either way, if it works again after flashing back to stock, great. If not, at least we have a baseline of knowing exactly where you stand, and not wondering what hte previous owner may or may not have done to possibly jack things up.
Well first, I would download the wimax keys checker from the market to double check to make sure they are there, cuz I have seen people lying about stuff like that.

Only thing is u gotta be rooted to use that. Maybe a temp root with z4 and then check the RSA keys.

True, so I would recommend that course of actions, as it can be the quickest answer.
