Hello, I am new to this but successfully used unrevoked 3.1 on my evo. From there I installed two roms under clockwork recovery from zip files on my sd card, one worked, the other did not. What I am confused about is that they say unrevoked does not allow NAND write to /system, but yet I was able to flash a custom rom? i thought i had to be nand unlocked to flash a custom rom? Thanks !
should I post this to a different part of the forum or...
If you have a "Question" to which you would like an "Answer" then the "Q&A" section will suffice.
Regarding your question, my answer is to use the "Search" button or read the threads first. - You won't believe how much information I've learned just by reading through a thread with a couple hundreds pages of "good" feedback on root, roms, and what type of root methods to stay away from.
My question wasnt really a general question and is about development so I thought it would be appropriate here. I have read this forum since 07 and this was the only question I wasn't able to find anywhere. No one has spelled out exactly why some roms need nand unlock and others don't as far as I have seen.
I've noticed this too. I'm using baked snack with no issues but can't run damage control.
sent from my htc evo
Certain ROMs will require you to have NAND unlocked others not, this isnt a development question though its a general question about how to root the phone.
What is the difference though ? As in why if one rom can work nand locked why would another not be able to work? I'm trying to understand whats happening here.
more importantly, does anyone know how to nand unlock? Simple root doesn't work on my system after unrevoked..

If i was you i would go back to stock RUU and try Toast root method 1 and 2 for the full root, or if you got the 1.47.651.1 the the SimpleRoot.
And i believe the difference between ROM that need or does not need Nand unlock is that some roms writes in nand and other doesn't.
I've been trying to figure this out as well as I have 1.47.651.1, rooted with unrevoked 3.1, and have been trying to unlock nand with no luck. I'm on a mac so simpleroot won't work for me (even tried it on my work PC, but something is messed up with the /net framework, installed 4, but simpleroot says it can't find it), and when I try toast's method I get "permission denied" errors when trying to use the adb system. So I'm kinda stuck on what to do right now....
Scratch that, found my problem.. Forgot to startup superuser access...
I also rooted with unrevoked 3 and want to get the nand unlocked.
Did you get it to work on your Mac or the PC? I'll continue to search around in the meantime and see what the best method is... I'd rather do it on my Mac, but I can find a PC if I must.
thanks.

Scroll down to install instructions, download the forever zip and then flash in recovery, and you'll be all set.
I'm a noob at Android hacking and wanted to root my evo After a few questions to one of my friends, he pointed me towards unrevoked3. Now am stuckand don't now how to unlock the NAND and its driving me crazy. I want to be able to use roms such as damage control. Please help. Im compleatly lost.
I would ask your friend, don't think many here use unrevoked, we used the complete method from toast.
Also read through the posts in the Dev wiki.
I just rooted and unlocked last night...had a few issues. Should be around most of the evening. Where are you and what did you do?
Last night I used that unrEVOked3.1 software and then moved on to unlocking. You will need to ADB installed to do it the way I did it. This is a component of the Andoroid SDK. (You can find that from the google android site.) It is complicated and I got through it because I am old enough to have actually worked in DOS back when there were dinosaurs.
It's not impossible, there are instructions out there...but it will take effort. Hate to point you away from xda...'cause LOTs of good work here...but I followed the unlockr.com tutorial for unlocking nand.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-unlock-nand-on-the-htc-evo-4g/
There were a couple issues where su couldn't find the sdcard. I even did lists and saw it, but the commands failed at start. Took a mix of unplugging usb and replugging and mounting and just charging....not sure what fixed it...LOL. But I got the commands to run eventually.

You can use Rom Manager app to install CM7. In fact Rom Manager is included in CM7 Rom. Honestly I think Rom Manager was made mostly for CM Roms. Make sure you wipe data, cache and davlik before going to CM from another Rom. I never flash through Rom Manager app and always flash manually from recovery, but a lot of people do flash through Rom Manager. Good Luck.
Also just to clarify(someone correct me if I'm wrong),
I think if you used the unrevoked3 app from this thread Unrevoked to root your EVO that it also nand unlocks it too. The thread doesn't state it, but the app has been updated to work with the latest hboot, so it should work on all Evo's right now. I could be wrong, but I have used the latest Unrevoked to root all of the Evo's that I have rooted and have never had any problems with backups, restores and flashing Rom's.
and i got titanium back up for my apps but not sure how to use it i got idea of hot to use it and how can tell if my nand is unlocked or not

power off your phone then go into bootloader using power+vol. down..if you see s-off at the top the youre unlocked
If you are s-off, but still having problems with some root apps, you need to install busybox. You can do this from the "problems?" button in the bottom right of the overview screen in Titanium Backup. Then choose "get busybox".

I had Damage Control 3.1.2, updated the radio it worked fine! then i went and updated wimax..and everything went to hell!!
i have tried to switching back and fourth between the different wimax radios, and sometimes it would come back..well i got sick of messing with it so i went back to stock with root! and now i cant seem to get 4g to work!
Under the Menu settings, software Info:
Firmware Version: 2.1-update1
Baseband Version: 1.36.00.04.02

Build Number: 1.17.651.1
Browser Version: WebKit 3.1
PRI Version: 1.34_003
PRL Version: 60669
i just need to know which radio i should re try just to get my 4g back!!!
please help asap
Your title was a little misleading so I canged it accordingly.
I would suggest trying this to get you to 1.47 with all the the correct radio/wimax
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
Test that out -- it worked great for me.
From there, go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743352 and download the 2.2 Rooted Odexed ROM, New radio, and new wimax. Follow the directions and make sure to do a full reboot after flashing each.

trying it now! im trying to avoid going to 2.2 until DamageControl releases their version...but i hope this works!
hey do i need to re root also? because i lost my root
wait, i just red you had to install super user, and its suppose to automatically root/nand/ and do everything? how is this possible
Can you post a little bit more detail as to what issues you are experiencing?
Is your 4G just stuck on scanning?
Is your 4G scanning > connecting to sprint > obtaining IP address > back to scanning > etc etc endless loop.
Have you checked to make sure your wimax mac id is still correct?
What area are you in? Try posting to see if anyone else in your area is experiencing problems. Just worth a try because earlier last week, I went through the trouble of flashing a bunch of different radios, reading through a bunch of fixes only to find out that other people in my area couldn't get 4G to sign on either. So it turned out that it was an issue with Sprint itself. Had to go one week without 4G but now its back on and its faster than before.

super user does not automatically do anything. it simply provides /system access to those applications that require it.
if you applied either the leaked or the official froyo update that was not modified to maintain root access, you are out of luck for the time being.

That was the exact same problem I had on my phone. It turns out that 4G was just down in the area. I even went through the trouble of reflashing my wimax radios. What city are you in right now? I can try to search other forums to see if there are others in your area experiencing the same issues.
What you can do if you are still restless, run ADB and run wimax_mtd, you can either use ADB or you can also download Terminal Emulator from the market.
then type
su
wimax_mtd
Go through it and check to see if your wimax mac address is still correct by verifying it with the address you have underneath the battery.
Next would be to check if your user login info is still correct. It should be [email protected] I believe you can check this in the data settings. Just dial ##data#, you might need your MSL, but I think you can still go into view mode without the MSL. Im not really the best at explaining things in detail if any of this dont make sense, feel free to msg me. I'm fairly new but I do know how it felt to have 4G stop working all of a sudden.
Also I believe if you updated your wimax, your base rom must match for it to work. Such as the wimax from the 1.47 ota, you must be running a 1.47 base rom.
I assumed that you still had root. If you are not rooted, you are out of luck. You will need to root your phone before using the method. If you are on 2.2 without root, you are completely out of luck.
Using the whitslack method will not root/unlock nand for you -- it simply will update your phone to 1.47 with the corresponding radios.

If you ran the first part of Whitslack's method (putting the PC36IMG on your SD card and running it in bootloader) just do the second part (putting the superuser.apk on your SD card and flashing it in custom recovery) and you will have full root again.

and i have read this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7020516&postcount=3826
has anyone had any luck with it?
Guys, I'm lost. I search. I read (my eyes are bleeding), but unfortunatley I don't understand the terms, so it's all greek to me.
I have a stock EVO with 2.1 The only thing I have done is added Unrevoked3 to bring back my ability to use wifi tethering.
I would now like to get to 2.2. I've been saying "NO" to the OTA update because I know nobody has rooted 2.2 yet.
That said, it seems that because I haven't upgraded I can pull root, apply 2.2, keep root and keep wifi tethering.
I'm wondering if someone can provide step by step instructions on how to do this given a stock phone with only unrevoked3 on it so far.
I know - search... I'm so lost though. I want to be as close to stock as possible when I'm finished, and ideally I'd like to be able to go back and apply the stock OTA or HTC update if I want to, even if I lose root.
Can anyone help? Step by step?
Thank you!
If you rooted 2.1, then you can upgrade to 2.2.
There are probably 10 rooted ROMs in this forum now. Pick the one you like and flash it. Just be sure it says it is rooted.
You must be FULLY ROOTED for most roms on here. Unrevoked3 is not a full root.
Look into Simpleroot to get a full NAND unlock and root and then you can boot into the custom recovery and flash as you please.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=706411
Try using this method and flashing a custom rom should give you root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745420
Sounds like I'm hearing 2 things. Do I need to do a full root (BTW, I'm on an old mac, so I can't use simpleroot), or can I do as xHausx says and just install over the unrevoked3 "root"?
Recommendations on the ROM's closest to stock Froyo?
Will I be updating the radio at the same time?
Sorry - newbie
Go with xHausx's method then.
I'm running Baked Snack 1.3, it's a solid ROM. You'll be playing with many roms over the next couple weeks.
Here's a stock rooted 2.2

Okay, so I am downloading the one Grouse recommended. At the same time I'm doing a backup via rom manager and have done a titanium backup already.
From here is it as easy as transferring the .zip file to my Sd card and then loading it via rom manager???
Again, remember I'm on unrevoked3 and everything else is stock.
Will I have to update any radios, etc?
Thanks so much - what a wonderful resource this site is.

this will not work. you need to have "full" root and be NAND unlocked to flash roms. Unrevoked3 is not full root as stated above. you may however try UnrevokedForever. just find the appropriate thread and follow the instructions if it is compatible with a mac, dont remember right off the top of my head.
Okay, t3project... explain the thread in post #4 here.

Okay, so I've updated with no problems. I'm on Froyo now, I retained wifi tether. All is good with the world.
Except Pandora. I get the poor quality and the closing when nav or phone call.
Is there a fix for this yet? Also, now that I'm running a custom ROM I would assume I can't take any updates that google would push out. I can still update apps, but if this problem with Pandora is with the OS am I screwed?
Thanks,

I've found the "fix" even before I tried to install 2.2. The problem is that I don't have a PC to work off of.

Probably with a stock rooted rom but if you want to do other things such as overclock, uncap the fps, custom kernels and whatnot you'll need to be full nand unlocked.
OK so I'm on my 3rd htc evo 4g since its release, 2nd in the last 2 weeks. something keeps happening every i root it. i used the 3step root the first time i rooted, i then proceeded to use the autoroot that's currently out the last time, the phone constantly reboots itself non stop and feels warm to the touch, really warm. does anyone have an idea on what methods i should take to root my phone and what roms to use.
the last 2 times my phone broke down was running on myns 2.2 rsl4 or w/e.
i placed this is devs because it really has alot to do with the dev of this phone, the guy at sprint just gave me my phone back and he said its been fine for 2 days with original software on it...
please move if you feel it needs to be moved.
I'm confused, is your phone already rooted or not? If your phone is overheating and rebooting I'd be willing to bet it's your KERNEL that's causing issues, not your rooting method
Yeah and I'm confused why you would be needing the new phones unless you had a real hardware issue?
first phone was rooted, it went haywire so i took it in, kid there flashed original software, phone was STILL restarting every time i played a game or w/e. he gave me new phone, rooted it, flashed myns through rom manager, restarted alot, tried new kernal, restarted ALOT more, took it, flashed original software and took root away again, new phone, currently just got it 2 hours ago....any set up ideas now?

Why don't you use it for a few days without rooting it - see what you experience? You also didn't mention what HW version and HBoot you had.... there are a lot of factors which could potentially cause something like this...
But I think the first thing you should do is do nothing. Use it without rooting and see what happens.

I resent people that attempt to trade in phones at their mistakes when it's just pure laziness.
I'm glad you're at least asking rather than repeating this process.
1st use Unrevoked3 to root.
Now, you should download a stock ROM to prevent from having to go into the store each time.
I'd recommend actually using this over a stock ROM anyways (it's a modified stock to run better).
And after that just browse through many ROM's, as far as kernel's I'd recommend trying Ziggy's.

I think I see your problem, you need to downgrade your PRI, the PRI is fine if you don't want to use any new kernels, but with custom Kernels you need the lower one. I had a lot of problems until I downgraded.

You don't need to downgrade your hboot, the only reason for that is to get an engineering hboot for fastboot commands and modifications, if your just flashing roms you don't need to do that. Make sure your following unrevoked very carefully, and before flashing any rom make sure you wipe eveyrthing, flash amon ra recovery and the option to wipe all is easy. So wipe all data, flash new rom and wait for reboot, takes a while now on first reboot. Also use your phone for a week to make sure its not hardware related before you root and flash.
