OK, root, unroot, and updated - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I have my EVO that was Simple Stock Rooted to 1.47, I wanted the Froyo update so I unrooted back with the stock HTC RUU exe 1.47.
So now after going into disk mode all of my apk's I had were still on the SD Card including nand etc. should they have been or? I though not so I did a format of the SD Card. I then updated to 2.2 and loving it so far
Now I guess my question is how to re root..do I use that "odexed" that is out or what? Any help appreciated

Can't root until someone finds a root method. Could take months.

I doubt it'll take months...
But yeah. You screwed yourself. Should have just flashed a rooted 2.2 ROM.

Nah, Im good, not worried about the root, I wander if I even need to be. I really only used like a couple of applications that need root so.. but just wandering,
What is this all about then

HTC OTA Froyo 2.2, *FINAL*, build 3.36.651.6 (Rooted) Odexed

That is what you were supposed to flash instead of unrooting and upgrading. That was your chance of getting Froyo for now.

very confused with a few things, please clarify!

Hey guys, seems i dove into all of this a little too quick and now i find myself quite lost...
my phone is currently rooted, running stock 2.1update1 with the 2.05 radio update installed and Hboot 0.79. i flashed skyraider 2.2 but ended up flashing back to stock.
now unrevoked forever came out and is promising root after the official 2.2 update which is something i would obviously like to have, so here is where im lost.
i want to be 100% able to update to official 2.2 as soon as its released as well as re-root if possible, and im just not sure how to do that. im not sure if my Hboot and radio versions will prevent the official OTA update or not. and if thats the case, what do i need to do to revert back to whatever i need to in order to receive the official OTA?
and should i run unrevoked forever as well to retain the rootability knowing that the official 2.2 update is my main concern?
thanks for anyone who clarifies guys!

Question regarding rumored OTA today

With todays rumored start of the OTA for the Dinc I have a question as to how to go about things. When the leaked 2.2 came out I flashed my radio and updated to the leaked 2.2, had the typical problems everyone else did but instead of going through all of the fixes went back to stock 2.1. So I'm back to firmware 2.1-update1 baseband 1.000.03.04.06. My question is this. Unrevoked posted a tweet last night/early this morning saying to be sure to use Unrevoked Forever before any OTAs. So, at risk of goofing something up what steps do I need to take to be ready for the OTA?
Root using Unrevoked 3.1
Use Unrevoked Forever
Wait for OTA
Sound about right? But if I do those things will I be able to apply the OTA without issue? Or is the general idea to not apply 2.2 until Unrevoked has come out with a modified 2.2 OTA. I'm honestly not too worried about root as I know that Unrevoked will eventually, if not soon after the update, come out with something for rooting 2.2.
Also, if I do these things and return to Stock, S-ON will be there still, can I then take the update normally without issue, then simply wait on Unrevoked to root 2.2? So many things going on, not sure which way to go.
I looked over the forums and didn't see any similar questions being asked, so if I missed something please disregard.
You need to have s-off before you apply the 2.2 OTA update or you will loose Root perm until they figure out a way to reroot. If you have S-off even if you take a OTA that has not been rooted, you can simply flash a new recovery that allows you to install su, and use that to restore yourself to a fully rooted system.
I got this information from http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever I take no credit for it.
The steps you described will enable you to root after the OTA update. Just make sure that you have the latest radio before you update.
Keep in mind that there is currently no way to revert from s-off at the moment so if your goal is to have a 2.2 factory image, just sit tight and wait for the update.

OK, forgive the stupid question. It's early, I didn't sleep, so I NEED to run Unrevoked Forever, period, before the OTA, otherwise I'm at the mercy of someone discovering a root method for 2.2, which may or may not take forever, yea?
Yes that is what I have read that the 2.2 OTA will plug up the current root process just like it did for the EVO.
If you want root, you install unrevoked forever.
If you are worried about being able to revert to stock image for warranty reasons or otherwise, check Berzerker7's post in the development thread to downgrade. According to him you will have stock and VZW techs dont have a way for checking for s-off

OK so here's what I've got so far, and thanks for the help =)
•Run Unrevoked 3.1
•Run Unrevoked Forever
•Reflash back to Stock 2.1
•Apply official OTA
•Apply custom recovery
•Install su
Sound right?
I just found this about the OTA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7728407&postcount=3386
Assuming you are on 2.1 with clockwork and s-off: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7660617&postcount=5

So could I follow the steps I outlined before and be ok?
•Run Unrevoked 3.1
•Run Unrevoked Forever
•Reflash back to Stock 2.1
•Apply official OTA
•Apply custom recovery
•Install su
Yes you should be fine if you do that.

Now all we need is the OTA.
I am a bit confused. I am urnning radio 2.15 (latest) with SkyRaider 2.5.2 and Clockwork recovery and S-OFF.
How do i go about getting stock radio and stock ROM? Also, can the stock rom be rooted or no when flashing OTA?
Thanks!

Read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=757927 to revert back to the stock radio and stock ROM. As you have S-OFF once you have intalled the OTA then just flash the custom recovery that Unrevoked has supplied http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever and apply SU and then you are rooted again.

Well if HBOOT still runs, they can just power it up and look for it to say S-OFF at the top.
Yup

[Q] Wanting to root my Evo4G but keeping my stock 2.2 Sense ROM?

Basically I'm new to the Android world. Just upgraded to an Evo4G from a good ol' WinMo 6.5 phone. What I want to do is simply root my Evo so I can take advantage of root-only apps, but keep the stock Sprint Froyo ROM with Sense UI.
Thanks a lot in advance. Much appreciated.
Revoked.com it roots ur phone
ur girlfriends evo
unRevoked.com it roots ur phone

Root your phone with unrevoked from unrevoked.com.
Then flash the rom from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=789913
Everything will be exactly the same, except you will have root and access to any program you would like.

to clarify, if you root your phone with unrevoked 3.21, it ONLY gives you root access and sets s-off. this means you still have your stock 2.2 rom.
the link provided above is the new OTA update. while you can install that, it's not necessary.
you should be able to do all the OTA's then unrevoked/forever.
no need to flash any other rom.

[Q] Any reason to upgrade from 2.2 just to root?

Is there any reason for me to update my already rooted 2.2 Evo to the latest just to update? Do I get anything out of it?
If so, where can I get the original PC36IMG.zip to flash? Thanks.
If you're satisfied with the way your device is performing then no, there is absolutely no reason to upgrade. Having said that, if you want to see how newer roms look and perform on your rooted device then yes, you should upgrade from 2.2.

Any idea where or how I would get that original zip file and go from rooted to non-root?

No need to unroot and re root. That is just plain stupid. If you want the features of 2.3 flash a 2.3 based Rom.

I think your question is more around whether the new root method gives you a "better" root than the original, or if it "updates" something. In this situation, no. You're either S-OFF or you're S-ON. If you'd rooted with the old methods and you're S-OFF, there's nothing gained by re-rooting with revolutionary.
Just sleep better at night knowing that if you ever need a replacement, it can be rooted!

+ 1....... Well stated, my friend....
from my EVO 4G
If you're on 2.2 (Froyo) and already rooted, you can simply get a new rom with the latest Gingerbread kernel included and flash it (recommend doing Nandroid and app backups first).
MikG 2.45 is a nice sense-based rom which has is gingerbread (2.3.3) and incorporates the new sense 2.1 and some 3.0 widgets. Very nice, just follow Mik's recommendations for installation (wipe everything but SD card) for first install.

[Q] upgrading from froyo, already s-off but no root

My wife's desire HD which is still running the original stock froyo and stock. about 18m ago I remember making it S-off and super-CID (remove simlock) I unrooted it made a backup. and then removed just the root so my wife didn't inadvertantly mess it up.
It now got problems with battery drain I suspect the programs are conflicting with the old froyo rom. As such I want to upgrade it to ICS.
I can enter the clockworkMod recovery v2.5.1.3.
Can I just install zip through recovery, or do I need to unroot? if so how best to root.
Also the bootloaders for ICS do they get installed with the ROM or do I need to prep it with a pre-install? if so where do I get it from?
I search for any wiki guides but could not find the answers.
thanks

If you are still S-OFF as u say u are, just download the Superuser App from the play store, update binary in the app options and then reboot. You should be rooted then. If you update to GB never flash a froyo RUU again...you will mess the bootloader and that seems to be trendy!! :good:
