Hi guys, sorry for the OT. I have the Desire and a pay-as-you-go SIM from Talkmobile. Problem is, the reception is terrible, in my flat, restaurants, pubs, sometimes even outside. Many times I get the "no service" message.
I just rang Talkmobile to ask if a possible cause was the fact that they don't smartphones (I had talked to them a couple of weeks ago when I first got the Desire), which they confirmed could be the case, yes.
So my question is, what do you guys (and gals) think is the best network to move to? I would mainly need it for texts and internet. International calls would be a definite plus.
Thanks in advance

T-Mobile are the best imo, i get a whole month unlimited internet for £5 and if i top up £10 in a month i get unlimited free texts for the next month, there are also various voice packages you can buy
Thanks for the reply What you mentioned is on a pay-as-you-go card? Or only on contract?

its pay as you go
Great, thanks
There are some cracking sim-only deals going around. They are normally a 30 day rolling contract so you are tied in for just a month at a time but you do get very generous allowances with them.
I am on three and coverage is good as they "piggy-back" the t-mobile and orange networks when three coverage is low. They too offer good packages.
Have a look here:

Thanks Phil, I'll look into 3 as well.
I have vodaphone and the coverage is generally quite good. I am on a monthly rolling contract but i also talk a lot so its £20 a month plus £5 for the internet, it is cheaper for a 12 month sim only but i am thinking of moving once i buy my wife a new mobile. You will probably find that the major networks will suit your needs some of the time depending on what part of the country you are in.

Absolute garbage I'm afraid!
Talkmobile is an MVNO than uses Vodafones network. Anywhere you get Vodafone coverage, you'll get Talkmobile coverage.
Given than Vodafones network is pretty extensive, I'd say the issue is more likely to be the radio on your phone. What baseband version are you using?

Dave

Hi Dave. My baseband's 32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20 (from this weekend's update). Signal reception's slightly better with Froyo than with 2.1, but the difference's marginal.

I find it hard to believe that Vodafones network would be that bad everywhere you go, which leads me to believe it may be a fault on your phone. Have you tried a SIM from a different carrier (not an MVNO) in your phone?

Dave
+1 Vodafone has signal in remote parts of Scotland where everything else fails,,,
No, I haven't had the chance to try another network's SIM unfortunately. It's the obvious test to perform but haven't had the chance.
I'll just order a TMobile free SIM and use it to test.
Just got home with a T-Mobile card and I can confirm I have better signal than I ever did with talkmobile

I have an 8525 using an "old blue sim". I have been having problems connecting with the 3g network. "There is a problem connecting to the GPRS service in the roaming network you are in." I am able to make voice calls on the utms network, but I am unable to make a data connection.
I thought my phone had a problem, but I think it is ok. I have no problems connecting to the Edge signal just 3g. I have flashed my phone reflashed the roms and radio..
Is any one else having this problem?
I did call at&t and ask for help, but they would not even talk to me because they say they are not supporting "old blue" and I need to migrate to a new plan/sim.
This started about a month ago. I am not sure if flashing a rom maybe corrupted the radio?
Does this mean anything. Taken from the Hyper Core thread.
@PaY87
Yup, UMTS is one of the Third Generation (3G) mobile systems. I use Hypercore Kitchen, but I've removed the .rgu files from this rom so it won't be easy to rebuild it.
Anyone with an "old blue" sim still working on the 3g network?

Scott, when I got my 8525 I was told I had to upgrade my sim to a 3G sim. I did and have had no problems since.
Jim
I was told they will not change my sim unless I change plans and migrate over to the new at&t. I have a great plan. I pay about 90.00 a month for two phones 1550 anytime minutes nights/weekends start at 7 and a unlimited mmode data plan on one phone. They had a great promotion at the time and I don't want to lose it.

Unfortunatly for you the only way to change your SIM is to do what you said they said above. I have a friend that works at AT&T and he was tellign me about that not to long ago.
Just another Corporate manuever to capitalize gains within large companies, thats America for you
There are some great deals going on withen AT&T now and I'm sure If you talk to the right people (Store Managers, Customer Service Supervisors) they would set you up with a nice plan. don't upgrade the normal way, make sure you talk to someone and BE AGRESSIVE!!!

Analog bids Adieu
Yesterday, December 26, 2007, 5:17:26 PM | Joshua Karp
2008 is going to be a sad year for anyone that still remembers the early days of mobile technology. Not only is the TDMA band, currently the massive monkey on AT&T’s back, set to go black, but it looks like the old school analog cellular network will also be put to rest. Analog has remained in use primarily due to its presence in rural areas that have yet to reap the benefits of the "shiny new" digital network. With the seemingly exponential increase in signal penetration by America’s wireless carriers, however, it seems that the analog bands have run their course. Fewer than 1% of phones currently in use are functioning on the analog network, but if you suspect that your handset might be one of them now would be a good time to check. As many as 500,000 GM On-Star-equipped vehicles will also be affected.

Thanks. I never thought of that maybe I will give it a try today. You just went into a store and asked for a replacement sim paid 26 bucks and your 3g has been working with on "old blue" account?
Thanks
Scott
I too have a similar issue.
I am using a 3G sim card and have an 8525 but don't have the data connect plan. Instead since I bought the phone outright I went into the store and added the Media Net unlimited Plan. Worked flawlessly on the 3G network this past year then all of sudden last week I noticed it will only connect at EDGE. Maybe there catching on to this not sure but it seems interesting all of a sudden.
O.k. sorry for the detour back to your subject. I actually had the older sim card like you earlier this year and bought one of of eBay to upgrade. They were about half the price on there as Cingy store. Then just take in to any AT&T store and they can swap your sims, at least it could be done in the past.
Good luck.
I went to two at&t stores today. I asked if I could have a replacement sim. No problem untill they looked at my account. It had "old blue" written all over it. Both stores said that they were unable to give me a new sim. One guy even showed me the computer screen. The only link that worked on the whole page was the UPGRADE button. They could not even change it even if he wanted to. He also said he has not seen an "old blue" account in about 2 years.
According to the salesman if you lose your sim they will not replace it. You will have to sign up for a new plan and contract.
It was a good idea thought it was going to work.
Any other ideas?
Thanks

They had a pile of 3g sims there. The sales guy even showed me on the computer he tried clicking on replacement sim and nothing would happen. He clicked over the whole screen the only link that worked was upgrade. Saw it with my own eyes. The sales guy thought that all of these sims or accounts have been closed for years.
Thanks for the offer.

Word yo, not much you can do with a Blue account. I work at an AT&T authorized retailer, and the only real option is upgrading.
One thing though, before you bite the bullet: I'm pretty sure you don't need a 3G sim to access 3G. Look over on Howard Forums (you might be better off asking this question there), but there are people even with old 32k and 64k sim's working just fine. But that doesn't mean AT&T isn't blocking it. See if you can use someone elses SIM card in the phone to connect to 3g (if it's a newer "Orange" card, make sure you have the correct internet settings).

The 3g service was working fine untill about week or so ago. I travel quite a bit to New York and it happened up there first. When I would get home to Ft.Lauderdale everything was fine up till about week ago. So the "old blue" would get 3g service but I am thinking this is not the case anymore.
The howard forums have a lot of information. I need to get some time and really go through and read their site. Thanks for the info I never been on that forum.
Anyone out there have a old blue sim that is still working on the 3g network?
Scott
According to my friend, it works fine. Do not upgrade unless you have to, and don't give up your grandfathered plan. IIRC, The type of sim does not control connection speed or method, but only access to the network overall.... That being said, if you do loose your old pre-cingular Blue sim, they will not give you a new one without a new plan, so don't loose it.
Further, ATT doesn't (currently) screen for tethering or use of PDA phones with data plans made for phones, so no worries there.
Just to give you a quick up date. I flew in from Boston today. My phone had no problems using 3g in up in Boston.
I guess now ATT has the abilty to turn off the 3G in certain areas for us old customers. I know for sure 3G does not work with my old blue in New York area and Ft.Lauderdale area, but worked fine up in Boston today.
So I am not even sure even if I was given a new "3G" sim that it would allow me access to the 3G network.
The fight continues for me trying to get a new sim without changing my plan.
Scott
I need help please. It's not my service! (TMobile) It's my TP2. The signal is w-e-a-k! I drop calls all the time in my house now. I never used to do that with my s710.
Please, someone...is there something I can change in my settings? can i download something? I need to make this signal stronger. I did not pay all this $$ to have all these dropped calls. Can I change the "radio" or something? I think I read something about that, but I am such a noob. Please, someone guide me!
Thanks
Not sure if this will help as I am in UK.
I have just switched provider and discovered I don't get signal at home so went to Settings, Communications, Phone, Advanced, Band and changed network type from Auto to Gsm.
Don't need the 3G, data connection or whatever as have pc at home and get reasonable signal with phone forced to gsm.
I appreciate the reply, but that will not work for me. I use the data connection daily.
Any other possibilities people? Please. I am so desperate.
Does anyone have a solution ? Would a hard reset help? I don't want to start from scratch.
have you tried switching back from 3G to 2G? because if you get a constant 2G signal then it pretty much sums up that 3G signal is weak in your area.
Thanks. I don't even have 3g in my area right now. So that factor is out of the picture.
Will unfortunately have to wait for HARDSPL and new radio stacks.
There are signal boosters that you can buy off the net, no idea how efficent they are though.
Cheers,
Beasty
lol, Beast, thats exactly what I was going to say, a new radio helps in many cases. At least it did when I had my Dash.
On other news, looks like T-Mo let us down again, at least US buyers. No details were posted on their site concerning the TP2, as I posted earlier that was supposed to happen today. At least not yet. Oh well, only 4 days 'til Wednesday!!!!!!
edit: And @ Beast, or anyone who knows. Does the TP2 have an external antenna port? I use a signal booster, but used to have the external antenna adapter plugged in to my Dash. My next door neighbor is getting the TP2 also but doesn't want to ditch out the $200-$300 for a signal booster. I am going to give him my old setup if the TP2 has an external antenna port.
Thanks for the replies guys. I will wait for the HARDSPL. I will also be asking someone to hold my hand at that time b/c I have never done that process before. I am new to all of this flashing this and that stuff, but willing to learn.
how in the world are all you people getting the Tp2 so early? i assume it is not from T-mobile.
Got mine through Mobile Phones Direct It's available from a number of sources, in fact, including - gasp shock horror - Amazon (link!)
I am having reception problems too. I have a TP2 and a mytouch mytouch gets 3 bars tp2 gets 1 and goes in and out of 3g.
Select tmobile employees got the tp2 about 5 weeks ago ...roughly 5 in each market
so this could be the start of many people's reception problems...i wonder what will be done about it on the HTC end? Tmobile end? SHould be interesting.

Ah, no, not that one, sorry, didn't cotton on to your being in the USA - sorry
As to radio reception, anyone else got GPS receive problems at the moment? I've compared reception between the TP2 and my old iPAQ hw6915, and for the first fortnight, the TP2 outperformed the 6915: Now its the other way around - massively - the TP2 cannot seem to hold a lock on GPS, rendering the entire system useless.
Any ideas?

They probably have the UK version, or Telus version, or....etc. I know the UK version will not work in the states. Well, nix that, it will work, but will not get T-Mob's 3G when and if we see 3G. (At least in my area, lol) You can only get the 2G.
On a side note, has anyone seen the T-Mobile version. I think it is ugly compared to the UK version. Da** T-Mobile, always changing things.

Ah, it is not so techy. Tecky? hmm, got to think on the word there. I guess what I am trying to say is it is not a very complicated process. I was very apprehensive to flash my first ROM, but the first went so well, I don't think I could have asked for more. Just follow the guides and it should go smoothly. I flashed many ROM's on my (now gone) Dash. Let me put it in perspective though. I now own (sad to say) a BlackBerry, and with that you have to go through many complicated steps. However, I am getting the TP2, and that is one of the reasons. Flashing ROM's on the HTC device is a lot easier. After the first you will become Old Hand at it.
You should wait for the HardSPL, though, I think that is why mine went so smooth the first time. These guys are geniuses. They will have a solution before long. Listen to them and keep updated. They are willing to help, which is more than I can say for Crackberry dot com. Ooops sorry for the reference there. But you get flamed there for knowing a whole lot of nothing. Here, however, they might flame you, but lead you in the right direction.
Good luck and welcome to the Rhodium/Touch Pro2

Errr, now I don't understand the original signal problem. If there are no 3G coverage then IMHO you'd better switch to 2G (GSM only). It will spare your battery too, I think

I am thinking about getting the touch pro 2, and instead of waiting until AT&T finally releases it, I am thinking about biting the bullet and buying the unbranded unlocked version. My question is will the 3G still work. I have heard that 3G does not work on non-AT&T phones, or is that only if you buy an unlocked TMobile phone? Thanks for any help you can provide.
Search the forum, this has been answered 7,000 times.
Sorry, I did search and came up with thousands of answers and none of them seemed to answer my question specifically.
Ok, here the answer again by 7001 time
Europe original unbranded version will work only in Europe and Asia 3G and not in America networks
Just ordered the Tmo version today but I really like the unlocked version. Do you guys think there is a possibilty that the Euro version has support for AWS and is just not activated! I'm pretty sure this has been asked, but a search brought me no specific results. Why can't Tmobile just leave well enough alone!
7002
no, it won't work with AWS. only the Tmobile version does. EU doesn't work with any North American 3G, etc, etc, etc....
You could purchase the unlocked Australian version; 3G should work here, but that will cost $$$$.

Thanks for the information. Saved me from buying an unlocked version that won't work on AT&T's 3G. Will just have to wait for AT&T, just hope it isn't that long of a wait.
Would I be able to buy it from AT&T (when available) on a separate, new account, unlock it, pay the termination fee, and use it on my regular AT&T account with little problem? It's cheaper to terminate than buy off contract, most of the time, as long as they don't give me any trouble. Should it work?

Thanks in advance,
I have an unbranded TP2. I didn't want to wait any longer for AT&T to release theirs and I don't like the way they are going with their keyboard layout. I know 3G is important for most folks, but my essential needs is data connection for email and EDGE is doing a pretty damn good job. Maybe if I am waiting in line or something related to that, I may wish I had a faster connection to watch youtube, but for the most part, I have no regrets.

Yes that should work. But, how much is the termination fee? If you are paying $200 less to sign a 2-year contract then I'm sure the termination fee will be at least $200. Otherwise, I can't imagine at&t would make it that easy. Plus I'm sure you will have to pay for the first month of service, you won't get that back.

if you're in tmobile network you can use simple mobile. customer service is pretty bad. bunch of idiots. you need to get a sim card. i got mine from ebay for about $3. just pop in the sim card, load up your account and your good to go. you don't even have to unlock tmobile phone. for att phones, you have to unlock it but 3g will not work. hope this helps
one thing i'm disappointed about this service is you cannot do conference calls. i hope they change this policy.
yellowtail714, I've sent you a PM. Waiting for your reply
Hello,
So I gave Softbank a chance to bring a good international handset but they are just too involved with Apple they dont have much interest in Android. 2012 summer line up is a joke.
So I decided to buy an unlocked HTC One X. Unfortuntely I need to be in Softbank because all my family is in Softbank. Also I'm a little chicken when it comes to changing APNs and all that unofficially and running the risk of paying a lot of money for data.
So I called Softbank and asked them about getting their SIM for my own handset. The rep was constantly saying that they dont recommend it and I should first bring my handset to them to check. I know they will not pass HOX because its micro sim. Softbank does not support micro sim on this service.
And now I'm stuck with two options:
1) Use my existing silver SIM contract (not pre-paid)
2) MNP to BMobile
I want to ask you guys if any of you have just plugged your SIM (after cutting it) to HOX and it worked? I know 3G data will not work but voice and SMS?
Also, if I do not put a APN and just disable 3G data, would the phone work as normal? I do not want 3G as I'm mostly in a wifi area and I carry a WiMax when I go out.
I would appreacite any information on HOX on Softbank.
Thank you.
I gave my sim card the chop-chop and It's working fine inside the HOX. Go for it man, no problems at all as long as you know where to cut.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium

I just got my one x today. It's the international unlocked version. I just cut my sim card and put it in and it works perfectly. Don't worry just cut your sim and if you don't need wifi then disable mobile network, it will save you some battery as well.
Thanks Asavva.
If you dont mind can you give me some more details? As where you bought the phone (i'm going to buy from Expansys), and if you changed the APN settings etc.?
Also did you insert a black iphone sim or a normal silver sim?
Appreciate the information
Thank you Barondebxi.
Have you been having any issues with the phone? Wifi, screen?

No problem man. I've had the phone for 5 hours now ( it came from FedEx this afternoon here in the US), no issues at all. It's a very good looking phone. Wifi works very well, screen is AMAZING! I've already installed 2 updates. My phone was on 1.26, then I installed 1.28 and now 1.29.
Thank you.
I'm evry worried after reading all the issues HOX is said to have: wifi, screen flickering, battery heating, scratches on the screen, etc.
But I just cant make up my mind to go for GS3.. this phone is just too gorgeous..

Well it's funny cause for me, I had the galaxy s 3 preordered since yesterday morning. But they have delays because the supply is short so I bought the one x and got it delivered in 1 day. BUT personally I'm still going to buy the Galaxy S3, itt will be my main phone and this one will be my back up phone. Not to say it isn't as good but I'm more of a Samsung guy I guess. Nevertheless, this HTC one x is a beast! It's reallly the best thing HTC as ever released without a doubt.
Thank you Barondebxi.
I dont have a preference to either, its just that HOX looks better and I like the build than the GS3 plastic frame.
But I'm gonna give it a couple of weeks and see. Its very important that wifi works. Else I have no use from the phone. If the issues seems to persist I might as well go with a GS3.

Either phone you choose you will be happy. But if you're afraid of running into some issues, I think the S3 is a better choice right now. But both are epic phones. Ok I'm going to bed. Take care!
I completely agree, SoftBank's Summer 2012 line-up was not worth waiting for. As of now, I live in Japan, but don't have a Japanese phone and was planning on going with a Galaxy S3 whenever docomo wants to release it... however, I do believe I would like the One X more. Are you certain that if I bought the international version, that it would not work with SoftBank's 3G?
Yes. Softbanks 2012 line up was crap. Just some Sharp phones.
I was originally planning on MNP'ing to Docomo and get a GS3. With the MNP discount it'd been a good deal.
But since my family are on Softbank it'd be cheaper for me to be in SB. Also I'm liking HOX more than GS3. It's one sexy phone. GS3 is more like a slightly modified GN and I'm hating "prebble blue".. what were they thinking!? And I'm not a white phone person.
I\m pretty certain that international unlocked HOX will work on SB, but you will need to have a SIM. SB will not provide you with a SIM for HOX, unless you buy a pre-paid version and use that SIM. I have seen on web that HOX works with SB network, but for 3G data you wil need to find the APN details. The one on the web are for iphone (black sim). I think the APNs are different for silver SIM. I also asked from Expansys and they said HOX works on Softbank, but I cannot guarantee whether they actually know it for a fact. But there is no reason it would not as it supports WCDMA (this will not work on AU though). Let me know if you go for it.

Your first paragraph consists of my exact thoughts and plans, although I have no family here, it seems like my co-workers use either docomo or SoftBank. The only way I'd go with SoftBank however is if 3G on the One X works with their network.
I'm hoping one of my friends still has his SoftBank iPhone microSIM card. If he does, I'm going to ask him to mail it to me, then buy the One X from Amazon and see if it works. According to Wikipedia, SoftBank runs on 1500/2100... the 1500 band that the One X doesn't seem to support. What are your thoughts on that?
Have a look at these links Habbit.

I highly doubt HOX will not work on SB network. I use a Desire from SB now and the radio is the same as HOX. I doubt SB changed the baseband of HTC phones. And if the SB iPhone SIM works on HOX, there is no reason for it not to work on HOX. I doubt the frequencies are different for iPhone (black SIM) and other (real smartphones (silver SIM).
BTW, why would you buy from Amazon (Amazon Japan I suppose)? They are little expensive than Expansys and also Expansys offers extended warranty. I'm not sure the warranty of when you buy from Amazon (because I dont think its directly sold from Amazon Japan). I thought if I buy from Exapansys it'll be easier to deal with warranty and other issues (basically because my Japanese is not good).
Also, as difficult as it is, I;m going to hold off buying HOX for couple of weeks, because of the Wifi issues its been having. I'm gonna wait till Expansys get new stocks and also see how these issues turn up in next few weeks.
Actually I was going to get it from Amazon US (even cheaper than Expansys) and either have my mom ship it to me, or have my co-worker bring it back when he takes a business trip to Colorado. Haha
Are the WiFi issues that widespread?
Yes it is. Particularly with earlier models. Worst, it could be well be a hardware issue.

Interesting... I would really rather have the One X over the Galaxy S3, but that issue could be pretty annoying. How do you discover when Expansys receives new shipments of One X's?
I cut my Softbank silver SIM into Micro.
Enter open.softbank.ne.jp setting in APN.
Get 3G/H, SMS (both sending/receiving), Voice all great.
But I used WiFi most of the time cuz I dont wanna get a huge Data bill from Softbank. Heard so many stories about rumors on the forum.
Still working on MMS setting.

Thank you very much BrianInfo.
Could you please give me some more info regarding the phone.
1) I'm also very worried about getting a huge bill and I want 3G data disabled. So what if I dont put the APN address and leave it blank? Will voice/SMS still work?
2) Can you also share how you bought the phone? and also its HW version number. I'm planning on buying through Expansys but seem there service is not that good.
3) Do you have any wifi issues with the phone?
THank you very much.
How would I go about getting the SoftBank Unlimited Data (Flat-Rate?) plan if I have neither SoftBank service nor a microSIM? Should I have one of my co-workers say they broke their microSIM card or something and ask SoftBank for a replacement for me to use, or should I sign up for a cheap phone and then change my plan after I sign my contract?
